AAs the MOOC craze continues to explode, anyone interested in taking an online course faces a tricky question: Which course to take? Here are five aspects that you should consider before you start.(1)What is your learning style? Many MOOCs are video-based. Other courses use presentation formats. Some also require participation in group work. If you want to stay motivated during your course, think about how you enjoy learning. Are you a visual learner, preferring to use images to understand a topic? If so, a video-based course will work well for you. If you are a verbal learner who gains new information by speaking and writing, try a text-based course with lots of note-taking. Social learners, meanwhile, will thrive in forum discussions and project-based assessment.(2)Are you ready to become a full-time student?Be realistic about the time that you can commit to your online studies. Participating in an online course can take as much time and commitment as a class-based program. Check the course requirements and make a plan around your current schedule.(3) Does the course really meet your needs?Whether you are interested in a professional qualification or want to take a personal development course like yoga, there is a MOOC for you. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of taking lots of free courses in everything that you ever wanted to learn. Before you start a course, think about the end goal. Is the course aimed at beginners or advanced learners? Why do you need this qualification?(4) Do you need a support group? Some people learn best from seeing how others approach the problem. If you are such as learner, you will need to supplement your online lessons with an in-person support group.(5) What kind of certification will you get?Take time to find out what kind of certification is available upon completion of the course, and how you can prove your learning to others - for example, certificates, transcripts or digital badges.1. What kind of MOOC's does the author recommend to verbal learners?A. A video-based course.B. A text-based course.C. A forum-based discussion.D. A project-based assessment.2. What kind of learners need an in-person support group?A. Learners who prefer individual work.B. Learners who are in great need of a certificate.C. Learners who are too busy to become a full-time student.D. Learners who learn best from observing how others address the problem.3. What is the passage mainly about?A. Picking the right MOOC's for you.B. Deciding your learning style.C. Taking the right course you need.D. Choosing a suitable support group.BOne weekend I went toBuffaloto talk at a writers' conference organized by a group of women writers. The women were serious about their writing skills, and the articles they had written were solid and useful. They asked me to take part in a radio talk show earlier in the week to publicize the conference-they would be with the host in the studio and I would be on a telephone linking from my apartment inNew York. The appointed evening arrived, and my phone rang, and the host came on and greeted me. He said he had three lovely ladies in the studio with him and he was eager to find out what we all thought of the present state of literature and what advice we had for all his listeners who were members of the literati and had literary ambitions themselves. This hearty introduction dropped like a stone among us, and none of the three lovely ladies said anything, which I thought was the proper response. The silence lengthened, and finally I said, “I think we should stop mentioning the words literature and literary and literati. We're here to talk about the skills of writing.” Iknew that the host had been given information about what kind of writers we were and what we wanted to discuss. But he had no other preparation. "Tell me what insights do you have about the literary experience inAmericatoday?” Silence also greeted this question. He didn’t know what to do with that, and he began to mention the names of authors like Ernest Hemingway and Saul Bellow and William Styron, whom we surely regarded as literary giants. We said those writers didn't happen to be our models, and we mentioned people like Lewis Thomas and Joan Didion and Gary Wills, whom he hadn't heard of. We explained that these were writers we admired. “But don't you want to write anything literary?” our host said We were speechless. It was one of the all-time upset radio talk shows.4. The explosion of technology has made teaching outside the traditional classroom possible for teachers and has provided learners with easy access to course materials. Its attractiveness, benefits, and challenges are addressed. In April, 2005, I was approached by a student who was interested in our doctoral program. However, the first question out of her mouth was, “Do you offer any online courses?” Later that day, as I was reading the conference program guide trying for interesting presentations, I noticed many workshops on web-based learning and online education. I later attended two of those workshops and met several professors from different universities who had either taught online courses for quite some time or who were discovering the best practice for teaching online. These experiences helped me realize at least to some extent the degree of growth in online education. My responsibilities for the term included gaining more understanding of online education. Consequently, I made several attempts to enrich my knowledge of distance learning and online teaching. I consulted with my colleagues who were teaching online courses. This helped me recognize the importance of getting materials prepared even before the start of a term. I also learned that online courses may consume more time than regular classroom teaching. And I attended several workshops regarding online education and established a network withthose who were involved in online programs at other universities. I will consider these people as my consultants as I begin to design my own online course. Also, I conducted a brief survey with 15 students and two faculty members who had taken or taught an online course before to understand their experience. Eventually I completed a literature review which gave me the foundation and the background of understanding the need for online education.8. What benefits the development of online education?A. Teachers’ good teaching ability.B. Lack of traditional classrooms.C. Learners’ access to free courses.D. The rapid advance of technology.9. Why did the author take a student for example?A. To show students’ love for the doctoral program.B. To persuade learners of traditional education.C. To explain the growing trend of online education.D. To predict the future of the teaching career.10. What caused the author to know more about online education?A. The appetite for knowledge.B. The professional responsibilities.C. The requirement of research.D. The colleagues’ encouragement.11. What is the author’s attitude to online education?A. Carefree.B. Doubtful.C. Supportive.D. Unwilling.DIn 2002, young Elon Musk tried unsuccessfully to buy Russian rockets to help him send mice to Mars and back. Afterwards, the youngmillionaire decided to build his own rockets.Musk went to Southern California and started hiring people to help bring his dream to life. In a very short time, and despite some failures, his company SpaceX launched Falcon 1, the first successful privately-built liquid fuel rocket, into Earth's orbit in 2008.As the first Falcon rocket began testing, development was already underway for the Falcon 9. This much larger rocket, which uses nine engines to lift heavy payloads(有效载荷)into orbit, is engineered to return to Earth, ready to be reused for another flight. For Musk, space is the final destination. To help people get there, his company Neuralink is developing devices that will link people's brains with computers. A similar device has been developed at the University of Utah. It consists of a chip(芯片)with 256 threads(线程)that is placed between a person's skin and brain. Thethreads attach directly to brain tissue(脑组织).Patients who have the device are able to use only their minds to communicate with one another through computers.Neuralink's chips will have about 1,000 threads. A robot developed by the company will place up to ten chips under a person's skin. The chips will communicate without wires but with a tiny device that will be worn behind the person's ear. That device, in turn, will communicate with computers. The primary market for the technology will be for people that, because of injuries or birth defects, cannot control their hands and arms. With Neuralink^ product, they'll be able to mentally command a computer to type messages for them or carry out other tasks.12. According to this article, what was the first Falcon 1 able to do?A. Launch big satellites.B. Reach distant moons.C. Move around our planet.D. Study the universe.13. What does the article explain about Neuralink's chips?A. How they'll be set up.B. B.7:00am.C.9:30am. D.11:00am.I always wanted to be extraordinarily good at something. Not just as in, “Great job, Jimbo!” No, I wanted to be best-in-class, awe-inspiring, tiptop: a world-famous genius, like Michael Phelps, or Mark Zuckerberg.Unfortunately, my version of reality did not quite line up with this delusional vision. I was a good swimmer, but I peaked at the collegiate State Championships level. My academic record was pretty solid, but I never would have made it into one of those ivy-league schools.Though I rose to above-average status in a couple of areas, the disappointing truth was that I would never amount to anything more than a mid-sized fish in a small pond. God apparently had other plans. What drove me crazy, though, was the superstar talent thrown in my face at every turn. Some folks just seemed to get an unfair intensive dose (剂量) of it. Why couldn’t I be like Bernie Williams, the famed New York Yankees player who also happens to be a world-class jazz guitar virtuoso (艺术大师)?Some say greatness is simply a function of putting in the practice time. Around ten thousand hours, to be precise, according to author Malcolm Gladwell. I don’t question thethe ory of devoting extraordinary efforts to developing one’s expertise, but it seems that raw talent is equally important. You either have it or you don’t.I’ve heard that as people approach middle age, their life satisfaction increases because they begin to accept the gap between the expectations for themselves and the reality. After a few decades of frustration without the desired results, we eventually come to terms with how our lives turned out, even if it falls far short of our idealized youthful expectations.Hope bends, it seems.4.What does the word “delusional” in Para. 2 most probably mean?A.Imaginary. B.Ten thousand hours of practice. C.Raw talent. D.Talent and time.7.Which of the following might be the best title?A.Hope Bends B.Frustrating DecadesC.Practice Works D.Youthful ExpectationsLego is considering a brick (积木) rental plan in an attempt to cut down on plastic waste. The Danish toymaker has promised to make all its bricks from sustainable (可持续的) sources by 2030 and is investing significant resources into finding alternatives.Tim Brooks, vice-president responsible for sustainability, said the company was “totally open” to the idea of a product rental plan but admitted that lost pieces could prod uce a significant problem. “What are the chances of giving them to an eight-year-old child and getting them all back again?” Mr. Brooks added.“There is a lot of technical thinking that needs to be done. We are right at beginning of that.” Mr. Brooks said Lego was exploring several ideas with a view to producing the highest value from products while consuming the least amount of resources. He said many would “probably never see the light of day” and there was no current plan to try out a rental plan.Lego has come under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint among growinginternational alarm about the impact of plastic waste on the environment. It produces 19 billion pieces per year—36, 000 a minute—that are made entirely of plastic while much of the inside packaging is also plastic. So far, the only breakthrough has been the development of a line of bricks made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane. The green trees, plants and flowers were first included in Lego sets late last year but make up only 1%-2% of the total amount of plastic elements produced. Henrik Nielson, a production supervisor (主管) in Lego’s factory, said last year: “We need to learn again how to do this.”Lego reportedly releases around a million tons of carbon dioxide each year, with about 75% coming from raw materials that go into factories. The company has invested more than 100, 000,000 euros and hired 100 people to research non-plastic alternatives. It is aiming to keep all of its packaging out of landfill by 2025.8.Lego is making great efforts to ________.A.promote its brick rental plan B.raise its production efficiency C.explore ways to reduce plastic waste D.develop new products9.According to Mr. Brooks, Lego’s brick rental plan ________.A.is well under way B.has a long way to goC.is totally useless D.goes against Lego’s interest10.The writer tells of Lego’s stress of reducing plastic waste by means of ________. A.figures B.examplesC.comparison D.classification11.What is Lego’s attitude towards developing no n-plastic alternatives?A.Defensive. B.Determined.C.Disapproving. D.Doubtful.I arrived in my Chinese classroom, ready to share my vast knowledge and experience with the 75 students who would be my English Literature class. Having taught in the USA for 17 years, I had no worry at all about my ability to plant in my students enthusiasm for the literature of my mother tongue.I was really shocked when the monitor shouted “Stand up” and the entire class rose as I entered the room, and I was somewhat confused and anxious about how to get them to sit down again, but once that embarrassment was over, I quickly calmed down and launched into what Ithought was a fact-packed lecture, sure to gain their respect-perhaps even their admiration. I went back to my room radiating that rosy glow (光泽) that comes from a sense of significant accomplishment. My students kept journals, however, and as I read them, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by an overwhelming sense of frustration. The first journal said, “Our literatu re teacher didn’t teach us anything today. Perhaps her next lecture will be better.” Heartbroken, I read journal after journal, each expressing a similar theme. Didn’t teach them anything? I sketched the entire philosophical framework of thought AND laid the historical background for all the works we’ll study in class.” I complained, “How can they say I didn't teach them anything?”Determined to clear myself, I dug out all my reference books, adding background material to my next lecture, researching into the sociological setting and even the psychological state of the author. After the second class, I eagerly opened the journals, expecting enthusiastic reviews at last. Again, I was crushed by their continuing comments that I was going too slowly without giving meaningful details.More determined than ever. I dived into sources of criticism, deciding to devote more time to the texts by providing summaries of all the interpretations I could find of each work. This material would give my students ample information for drawing their own conclusions about the work’s meaning, “Our teacher seems confused about the real meaning of the works,” the journals said. “One minute she gives one interpretation;the next minute she gives another. Then she asks for our opinions. We’re the students. She’s the teacher. She should tell us what the works mean.”It was a long semester, and it gradually became clear to me that my ideas about education were purely Western, and that Chinese ideas differed significantly. I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide accurate information as directly and concisely as possible. Americans wanted to interpret and experience. The Chinese wanted to master and memorize.12.How did the writer feel before he began his teaching in China?A.Worried. B.Confident.C.Disappointed. D.Confused.13.What might be the reason why the writer was shocked when the monitor shouted “Stand up”?A.The students intended to scare their new foreign leacher.B.The students refused to stand up before their new foreign teacher.C.The writer was a little shy and felt embarrassed when he entered the classroom.D.The writer didn’t know much about the Chinese classroom and that was totally unexpected. 14.What does the writer mean by saying “determined to clear myself” in Para. 4?A.He wanted to better understand the students’question.B.He wanted to prove his ability in teaching the course.C.He was a little bit angry with the students.D.He was very disappointed with himself.15.Which of the following might the writer agree with?A.Chinese and Western ideas about education are slightly different.B.A teacher’s job is to make stude nts think and have their own opinions.C.Teaching is to provide accurate information directly and clearly.D.Both Americans and the Chinese tend to draw conclusions by themselves.二、完形填空Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. They say with "hip-hop treatment”, many of the words to the hip-hop songs can reach out to people with emotional problems. A team of doctors wrote a report about this in a special medical magazine. The doctors said a lot of hip-hop music speaks of getting over hardships and big difficulties in life. The report on hip-hop and mental health says hip-hop artists use their talents to des cribe their world and be free. There’s often a message of hope in the lyrics. The doctors chose five hip-hop songs for the treatment. One of them is “the Message” by Grandmaster Flash. Another is called “Juicy” by the Notorious BIG. After a while,I trained my eyes to “see” 一 to distinguish between waves hitting rocks and the rolling movement of whales underwater.I spent a lot of time just watching the sea through my binoculars (双筒望眼铁),looking actively for anything that indicated sea life below. My binoculars enabled me to spot the fins (續)of a dolphin against the darkness of the sea,and without a good pair of binoculars I definitely would have missed out on lots of amazing sea life.In addition,I eventually realized that the birds provide us with signals that whales and dolphins maybe in the area. Where there is a group of feeding seabirds such as seagulls or gannets, there is often a whale feeding under them. Gannets are really easy to spot from a distance 一 they drop out of the sky at speeds of up to 100 kph, spearing the surface and sending bursts of water up behind them.If you want to try this activity,it is worth organizing and planning carefully for whale watching. 1 recommend having a notebook and pencil nearby to record details of whatyou’ve seen and the environmental conditions at the time. This is not only a helpful aid in general, but you can also contribute your sightings to research projects such as the Sea Watch Foundation, which are monitoring the distribution of whales and dolphins.Despite the early disappointments I had,I think there is undoubtedly something very special about watching whales. Nothing can compare with the secret thrill and the peacefulness of seeing a wild animal just doing its own thing.24. What did the author learn from the embarrassing moments?A. It was hard to carry out the project.B. The project secretary was very strict.C. Most whales were not afraid of humans.D. Whale-watching was not as easy as expected.25. Which of the following is mentioned in Paragraph 2?A. The features of the author ’s binoculars.B. Binoculars’ importance for whale-watching.C. How the author got a good pair of binoculars.D. How to use binoculars when watching whales.26. The author advised whale watchers to .A. record whale-watching detailsB. be careful when watching whalesC. watch whales from the shore onlyD. seek help from the Sea Watch Foundation27. Previous studies have investigated how concussions lead to changes in this white matter, but a new study led by Dr. Inga K.Koerte of Harvard Medical School in Boston,is one of th e first to look at how even blows to the head that aren’t considered concussions may lead to brain injury. In the study, the researchers compared brain scans of twelve male soccer players from German top-level soccer clubs who had not experienced a concussion,to brain scans of eleven competitive swimmers who had similarly never experienced repetitive brain injury. The research team used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI),which is highly effective at catching white matter changes. The researchers found surprising changes in the white matter. Even though the playershad no concussions, their brains told a different story of damage, including changes to the myelin coating surrounding nerves.“Although our study is small,it is the first to look at soccer players with no symptoms of concussions,” says Koerte. “We think it is an important finding not just for soccer players, but other athletes of other sports too.”“If players are damaging their brains,it is a large public health issue because everyone, even at a young age, hits their head like this,” says Dr. Jeffrey Bazarian,an associate professor of emergency medicine at a university. He was not involved with the study, but has also used DTI to assess mild brain injury in high school football and hockey players.Koerte says more research is needed to get a better idea of how potentially damaging head injury can be at young ages. If it turns out repetitive head blows are harming brain functions,Koerte says regulations like stopping playing after a fixed number of hits may be needed. Or heading shouldn’t be allowed at all until a certain age.The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).28. The researchers found that one in three people felt worse after visiting the site and more dissatisfied with their lives, while people who browsed without contributing were affected the most.“We were surprised by how many people have a negative experience from Facebook with envy leaving them feeling lonely, frustrated or angry,”researcher Hanna Krasnova from the Institute of I nformation Systems at Berlin’s Humboldt University told the reporters. 44From our observations some of these people will then leave Facebook or at least reduce their use of the site,” said Krasnova, adding to supposition that Facebook could be reaching saturation point (饱和点)in some markets.Researchers from Humboldt University and from Darmstadt's Technical University found vacation photos were the biggest cause of anger with more than half of envy incidents triggered by holiday snaps on Facebook. Social interaction was the second most common cause of envy as users could compare how many birthday greetings they received to those of their Facebook friends and how many ** likes” or comments were made on photos and postings. “ Passive following triggers invi dious motions, with users mainly envying happiness of others, the way others spend their vacations and socialize,” the researchers said in the report “Envy on Facebook:A Hidden Threat to Users’ Life Satisfaction?” released on Tuesday.“The spread and co mmonly seen presence of envy on Social Networking Sites is shown to undermine users’ life satisfaction•” They found people aged in their mid-30s were most likely to envy family happiness while women were more likely to envy physical attractiveness. These feelings of envy were found to cause some users to boast (夸大)more about their achievements on the site run by Facebook Inc. to portray (描绘)themselves in a better light.Men were shown to post more self-promotional content on Facebook to let peopleknow about their accomplishments while women stressed their good looks and social lives. The researchers based their findings on two studies involving 600 people with the results to be presented at a conference on information systems in Germany in February. The first study looked at the scale, scope and nature of envy incidents triggered by Facebook and the second at how envy was linked to passive use of Facebook and life satisfaction. The researchers said the participants in both studies were German but they expected the findings to hold internationally as envy is a universal feeling and possibly impact Facebook usage.“From a provider's perspective, our findings signal that users frequently perceive Facebook a stressful environment, which may,in the long run, endanger platform sustainability,” the researchers concluded.32.
