What makes the world become smaller and smaller? Some inventions. It began in the 11th century, but it has developed greatly in the last century. Let’s take a look at the five top inventions. Movable Type(活字印刷): By using Movable Type, books could be printed cheaply and easily. Bi Sheng invented Movable Type in China in the 11th century.

Telephone: The inventor Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call in 1876. “Mr. Watson, come here. I want you.” he said to his assistant over the phone line. And with those famous words, the world was about to get much smaller.

Airplane: The Wright brothers made the first powered flight in 1903. Air travel has made the faraway places suddenly become a lot closer.

Satellites(卫星): The Soviet Union sent up the world’s first satellite in 1957. This began the Space Age. Satellites have helped scientists study the earth. Much of our knowledge of the world has come from the information recorded by satellites.

Internet: When the Internet was created in 1969, only a few people knew about it. But more than 650 million people in the world use it now. The Internet has made information about anything easy to get.

The Secret of Success

1. Your best chance of success is by doing what you really want to do. Ask yourself, “If money were not so important, what kind of work would I do for free?” Then j ust do what you like to do.

2 Think about what you are going to do. You have to start somewhere and it may be quite a real beginning. Whether you are beginning in business or you’re dreaming to be a star, you have to start at the bottom.

3. Great ambition(目标)is necessary. An English student called Richard Brason opened a student magazine when he was only 16 years old. But he didn’t stop there. He also opened a record

business with many shops, and now his company has planes, trains and cars.

4. The only people who succeed without hard work are lottery(彩票)winners. You need a “can do” attitude(态度)and you must work step by step, which will help you get what you really want. You are on the right way to win the success.

5. If you always say someone is successful, it doesn’t mean anything to you. Learn from those who have already succeeded in something, especially where they do the same as you want to do.

B. Start small

C. Follow the leaders

D. Find the work you love

E. Be prepared to work hard

Thumbs Down to Texting 屈指发短信

Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family?

Text messaging or “texting”, is becoming very popular. But, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems with our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause swelling(肿胀)in our thumbs(拇指). Our thumbs were not made for pushing small buttons(按钮), over and over. Scientists call his problem RSI(重复性紧张劳损). We spoke to a doctor called Harriet Wilson, who treats many sick people with RSI. She says we need to see how much time we are spending in typing text messages. If we are spending more than 10-15 minutes at once, we could have problems in the future.

As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller with buttons closer together. Texting with a smaller phone is worse than using a larger phone with bigger buttons. Using a computer keyboard and playing video games can cause the same problem. So more and more people could find themselves with RSI. Among them, most are university students and teenagers, as they do not know the risks of spending so much time using computers, video games and mobile phones. If we don’t do something about this, too many young people could grow up in terrible pain.

1. What is becoming very popular now?

2. Does the word “once” mean “one time” in the second passage?

3. What kind of people are easier to have the problem of RSI?

4. What can also cause RSI except testing?

5. Which is easier to cause the problem of RSI, using smaller mobile phones or larger ones?

Most people can think of a sport they would love to see in Olympics. But they often don’t realize how hard it is to add a sport to the Olympics. A sport needs to be well-organized and popular before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will consider it. An international federation must govern(控制)the sport by making rules and making sure athletes meet Olympic standards

(标准). What’s more, men from at least 75 counties and women from at leas t 40 must play the sport.

However, even meeting those conditions isn’t enough. The IOC always tries to keep the number of athletes at about 40,000 for each Olympic. Since most modern Olympics already included so many athletes, introducing a new sport often means cutting other events.

The country that hosts the games is allowed to suggest what new sports should be included. While new sports are added to the Olympics, most of them will simply become events in another sports meeting. In Beijing, open water swi mming will become part of swimming, while women’s steeplechase(障碍赛)will be added to athletics.

根据文章内容,完成下列任务:

1. How can a sport be added to the Olympics? 从短文中找出三个条件。

2. 根据文章内容,选择适当的词语完成句子。

and will become new sports in the 2008 Olympics.

In today’s world many people seem to be hungry for money. Money does have its most useful effect on the poor. But even if a person has already got plenty of money, .

If money were everything, all millionaires would have real love, true friendship, good health and a long life. However, this is not always correct.

Since the beginning of time no three words have ever invited more pleasure than “I love you”. But can love be bought? I’m afraid not. Love means to give, not to take. To every person, health and a long life are probably the best things. Well, can health and a long life be bought with money? The answer is “No”.

Of all the longest living people in the world, few of them are millionaires. True friendship can’t be bought, either. In a word, where money is dreamed too much, it can cause brothers to quarrel, marriage to end, lovers to hate, and strangers to fight. No matter how much money you have, it is still not enough to make a happy person if you have no one to laugh with, no one to cry for.

New rulers and behavior standards(行为规范)for middle school students came out in March.

①Who are the most excellent students? Middle school uses a new way to decide them. The best students won’t only have high marks. They will also be kids who don’t dye(染)their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules.

Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else’s work on an exam? Don’t do it again. That’s

not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don’t tell your parents you have done your homework.

Do more at school. ②Good students love animals and care for others. April is Bird-Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone.

Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you discover Earth someday. Don’t look down on new ideas. Everyone’s ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.

③Use the Internet carefully. Try not to look at Web pages that are bad for you. You can use the Web for homework. Can’t you find good Web site s for children? Parents are the closest people to you in the world. They love you just because you are you. And they would do anything for you.

Like a lot of middle sc hool students, Zhang Yu has a problem. She and her parents don’t get on well. “I really want to be my daddy’s little girl. But it feels like he just doesn’t understand. He talks at me and doesn’t listen.”said Zhang, a junior 3 student in Taiyuan, Shanxi.

Do you and your parents also have problems?

Well, why don’t you all take a walk and have a talk on Saturday? It’s the International Day of Families. On May 15, people around the world give thanks for good things about their families

and work on family problems.

A study last year showed that 1,500 Beijing families had the same problem as Zhang’s family: The children, 12 to 15 years old, didn’t like talking with their parents much. They weren’t happy at home. Of course, lots of kids feel that way. But you and your parents will be much happier if you can be friends. Here are some ways to have a good talk with them:

Find a good time to talk, for example, when you’re eating dinner, going out for a walk or watching TV.

Tell them something you’re interested in, or a sk them about theirn they were young. They love to talk about it.

Listen to them carefully and look them in the eye.

Be honest. Your parents will trust you more. And a trusting family is a happy family.

Now I’d like to say something about Larr y. Well, Larry is an inventor. His job is to invent new things. He works when he’s got an idea. His workroom is in his house, so he can work whenever he wants to. Sometimes he works seven days a week; sometimes he doesn’t work for days. Larry usually gets up at about 5 o’clock. He makes some tea, and starts work at 6. He drinks tea all day, but usually he doesn’t eat anything until the evening. First, Larry cleans his workroom and turns on the answerphone because he can’t talk to people when he’s got an ide a. Then he starts to work. He usually has a rest after two or three hours, but he doesn’t leave the workroom. He does something different to help him relax. Sometimes he does some exercises, and at other times, he listens to music. He usually stops work at about 9 o’clock in the evening. He thinks about his work most of the time, even when he’s out. Some of the apps provide the latest information about areas hit by the virus, while others collect data on infected persons. The Chinese government is working with two of the country’s largest technology companies to keep track of the disease. The two, Alibaba Group and Tencent Holdings, created color-based systems that record the health of individuals and identify carriers of the coronavirus. In February, Alipay, a payment app operated by Alibaba, released a system that uses colored QR Codes to show the health of people in the city of Hangzhou. A QR code is a sign a smartphone can read with its camera. Once the sign is recognized, the phone takes the user directly to an internet link with information about a subject. After completing the questionnaire, users receive a mobile phone message. It includes a color-based QR Code that relates to the health situation they described. Users with a red code are told to quarantine themselves for 14 days and continue reporting their condition by using Alibaba’s DingTalk messaging app. Users with a yellow code are told to stay in quarantine for 7 days, while those with a green code can travel freely. Chinese state media said the Alibaba system would be deployed at train stations, along major roads and other travel checkpoints. They added that the system is also being used in some neighborhoods. People are asked to show QR Codes when entering their apartment buildings. Customers are asked to do the same before entering the local supermarket. Alipay said it was working with the government to expand the system nationwide. Tencent, which operates China’s popular messaging app WeChat, reported the launch of a similar QR Code-based tracking system. Tencent developed the system with help from China’s National Development and Reform Council, which is currently in use in the southern city of Shenzhen. Officials said they expected it to be deployed to other parts of Guangdong province soon. Even before the latest systems were announced, many Chinese were already using mapping and travel apps in an effort to avoid areas with coronavirus infections. One of the apps, developed by WeChat, uses official reports to identify places in the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou where coronavirus cases have been confirmed.
