Unit 1享受幽默——是什么使人开怀?[1]The joy of laughing at a funny story is universal, probably as old as language itself. But, what is it that makes a story or a joke funny?1 听了一个有趣的故事会发笑、很开心,古今中外都一样。
那么,到底是什么东西会使一个故事或笑话让人感到滑稽可笑的呢?[2] As one who has enjoyed humor since I first recognized it, I've made an attempt to explain and discuss humor with students in such diverse cultures as Latin America and China. I've done some serious thinking about funny stories. It has been a labor of love!2 我是第一次辨识出幽默便喜欢上它的人,因此我曾试图跟学生议论和探讨幽默。
[3]Why is it that several students in a class will fall out of their chairs laughing after I tella joke while the rest of the students look as if I've just read the weather report?[N]Obviously some people are more sensitive to humor than others. And, we recognize that some people tell jokes very well while others struggle to say something funny. We've all heard people say, "I like jokes, but I can't tell one well, and I can never remember them." Some people have a better sense of humor than others just as some people have more musical talent, mathematical talent, etc. than others. A truly funny person has a joke for every occasion, and when one is told, that triggers an entire string of jokes from that person's memory bank. A humorless person is not likely to be the most popular person in a group. It is reasonable to say that the truly humorous individual is not only well liked, but is often the focus of attention in any gathering.3 为什么听我讲完一个笑话后,班上有些学生会笑得前仰后合,而其他学生看上去就像刚听我读了天气预报一样呢?

Unit 1TextTwo college-age boys, unaware that making money usually involves hard work, are tempted by an advertisement that promises them an easy way to earn a lot of money. The boys soon learn that if something seems to good to be true, it probably is.BIG BUCKS THE EASY W AYJohn G. Hubbell"You ought to look into this," I suggested to our two college-age sons. "It might be a way to avoid the indignity of having to ask for money all the time." I handed them some magazines in a plastic bag someone bad hung on our doorknob. A message printed on the bag offered leisurely, lucrative work ("Big Bucks the Easy Way!") of delivering more such bags."I don't mind the indignity," the older one answered."I can live with it," his brother agreed."But it pains me," I said,"to find that you both have been panhandling so long that it no longer embarrasses you."The boys said they would look into the magazine-delivery thing. Pleased, I left town on a business trip. By midnight I was comfortably settled in a hotel room far from home. The phone rang. It was my wife. She wanted to know how my day had gone."Great!" I enthused. "How was your day?" I inquired."Super!" She snapped. "Just super! And it's only getting started. Another truck just pulled up out front.""Another truck?""The third one this evening. The first delivered four thousand Montgomery Wards. The second brought four thousand Sears, Roebucks. I don't know what this one has, but I'm sure it will be four thousand of something. Since you are responsible, I thought you might like to know what's happening. What I was being blamed for, it turned out, was a newspaper strike which made it necessary to hand-deliver the advertising inserts that normally are included with the Sunday paper. The company had promised our boys $600 for delivering these inserts to 4,000 houses by Sunday morning."Piece of cake!" our older college son had shouted." Six hundred bucks!" His brother had echoed, "And we can do the job in two hours!""Both the Sears and Ward ads are four newspaper-size pages," my wife informed me. "There are thirty-two thousand pages of advertising on our porch. Even as we speak, two big guys are carrying armloads of paper up the walk. What do we do about all this?""Just tell the boys to get busy," I instructed. "They're college men. They'll do what they have to do."At noon the following day I returned to the hotel and found an urgent message to telephone my wife. Her voice was unnaturally high and quavering. There had been several more truckloads of ad inserts. "They're for department stores, dime stores, drugstores, grocery stores, auto stores and so on. Some are whole magazine sections. We have hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of pages of advertising here! They are crammed wall-to-wall all through the house in stacks taller than your oldest son. There's only enough room for people to walk in, take one each of the eleveninserts, roll them together, slip a rubber band around them and slide them into a plastic bag. We have enough plastic bags to supply every takeout restaurant in America!" Her voice kept rising, as if working its way out of the range of the human ear. "All this must be delivered by seven o'clock Sunday morning.""Well, you had better get those guys banding and sliding as fast as they can, and I'll talk to you later. Got a lunch date. When I returned, there was another urgent call from my wife."Did you have a nice lunch?" she asked sweetly. I had had a marvelous steak, but knew better by now than to say so."Awful," I reported. "Some sort of sour fish. Eel, I think.""Good. Your college sons have hired their younger brothers and sisters and a couple of neighborhood children to help for five dollars each. Assembly lines have been set up. In the language of diplomacy, there is 'movement.'""That's encouraging.""No, it's not," she corrected. "It's very discouraging. They're been as it for hours. Plastic bags have been filled and piled to the ceiling, but all this hasn't made a dent, not a dent, in the situation! It's almost as if the inserts keep reproducing themselves!""Another thing," she continued. "Your college sons must learn that one does not get the best out of employees by threatening them with bodily harm.Obtaining an audience with son NO. 1, I snarled, "I'll kill you if threaten one of those kids again! Idiot! You should be offering a bonus of a dollar every hour to the worker who fills the most bags."But that would cut into our profit," he suggested."There won't be any profit unless those kids enable you to make all the deliveries on time. If they don't, you two will have to remove all that paper by yourselves. And there will be no eating or sleeping until it is removed."There was a short, thoughtful silence. Then he said, "Dad, you have just worked a profound change in my personality.""Do it!""Yes, sir!"By the following evening, there was much for my wife to report. The bonus program had worked until someone demanded to see the color of cash. Then some activist on the work force claimed that the workers had no business settling for $5 and a few competitive bonuses while the bossed collected hundreds of dollars each. The organizer had declared that all the workers were entitled to $5 per hour! They would not work another minute until the bosses agreed. The strike lasted less than two hours. In mediation, the parties agreed on $2 per hour. Gradually, the huge stacks began to shrink. As it turned out, the job was completed three hours before Sunday's 7 a.m. deadline. By the time I arrived home, the boys had already settled their accounts: $150 in labor costs, $40 for gasoline, and a like amountfor gifts—boxes of candy for saintly neighbors who had volunteered station wagons and help in delivery and dozen roses for their mother. This left them with $185 each — about two-thirds the minimum wage for the 91 hours they worked. Still, it was "enough", as one of them put it, to enable them to "avoid indignity" for quite a while. All went well for some weeks. Then one Saturday morning my attention was drawn to the odd goings-on of our two youngest sons. They kept carrying carton after carton from various corners of the house out the front door to curbside. I assumed their mother had enlisted them to remove junk for a trash pickup. Then I overheard them discussing finances."Geez, we're going to make a lot of money!""We're going to be rich!"Investigation revealed that they were offering " for sale or rent" our entire library."No! No!" I cried. "You can't sell our books!""Geez, Dad, we thought you were done with them!""You're never 'done' with books," I tried to explain."Sure you are. You read them, and you're done with them. That's it. Then you might as well make a little money from them. We wanted to avoid the indignity of having to ask you for……"

Unit 4: Flight 93: What I Never Know(第93次航班:我所无法理解的事)Introductory RemarksSince Sept. 11, 2001, the story of the passengers who fought their hijackers on United Airlines Flight 93 has become a model account of good thwarting evil. No one will ever know exactly what happened on that plane. But the last-minute calls made by some of the passengers give us a more complete account of the struggle of these everyday people. Here is one of the stories of courage and heroism.United Airlines Flight 93United Airlines Flight 93 was a Boeing 757 –222 flight that regularly flew from Newark International airport to San Francisco International airport, continuing on to Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan, on a different aircraft. On September 11, 2001, the aircraft on the flight was one of the four planes hijacked as part of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It was the only one of the four planes that did not reach its intended target, instead crashing into the field in south Pennsylvania. It is believed that the pilot, flight attendants and some of the passengers fought back. The crash might have resulted from the hijackers either deliberately crashing the aircraft or losing control of it as they fought with the passengers. 1.A hen has to lay eggs, a cow has to give milk, and a canary has to sing. But a dog makes his living by giving you nothing but love.E.g., When I was five, my father bought a little yellow-haired pup for fifty cents. He was the light and joy of my childhood. Every afternoon about four-thirty, he would sit in the front yard with his beautiful eyes staring steadfastly at the path, and as soon as he heard my voice or saw me swinging my dinner pail through the buck brush, he was off like a shot, racing breathlessly up the hill to greet me with leaps of joy and barks of sheer ecstasy.2. You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you. But I know and you know people who blunder through life trying to wigwag other people into becoming interested in them.3. If we merely try to impress people and get people interested in us, we will never have many true, sincere friends. Friends, real friends, are not made that way.4. It is the individual who is not interested in his fellow men who has the greatest difficulties in life and provides the greatest injury to others. It is from among such individuals that all human failures spring.E.g., The editor could pick up any one of the dozens of stories that drifted across his desk every day and after reading a few paragraphy he could feel whether or not the author liked people. The same things you preacher would tell you, but remember, you have to be interested in people if you want to be a successful writer of stories. If it is true of writing fiction, you can be sure it is true of dealing with people face-to-face.5. It is the individual who is not interested in his fellow men who has the greatest difficulties in life and provides the greatest injury to others. It is from amongsuch individuals that all human failures spring.E.g., He told me that every time he went on stage he said to himself:"I am grateful because these people come to see me, they make it possible for me to make my living in a very agreeable way. I'm going to give them the very best I possibly can."6. Having a sustained interest in other people let George Dyke create a new life for himself at a time when most people consider their productive years over and it also was one of the secrets of Theodore Roosevelt’s astonishing popularity.E.g., George became know to the country music fans in the eastern part of the United States as “Uncle George. Theodore Roosevelt told James E. Amos’ wife the bobwhite enthusiastically and treated his subordinates sincerely.7.I never forgot that to be genuinely interested in other people is a mostimportant quality for a sales-person to possess - for any person for that matter.E.g., Alice brought a piece to him on a plate, and he went over to the office eating it as he went and greeting gardeners and laborers as he passed...Whenever I went into this store I would always talk to the soda clerk and sales clerk for a few minutes before talking to the owner to obtain his order.8. One can win the attention and time and cooperation of even the most sought-after people by becoming genuinely interest in them.E.g., Years ago I conducted a course in fiction writing at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. In order to invite some distinguished and busy authors to come to Brooklyn and give us the benefit of their experiences,we wrote them. Each of these letters was signed by about a hundred and fifty students. And we enclosed a list of questions for them to answer about themselves and theirmethods of work. They liked that. By using this method, many prominent men to come to talk to the students of my courses in public speaking.9.If we want to make friends, let's put ourselves out to do things for other people---things that require time, energy, unselfishness and thoughtfulness.E.g., When the Duke of Windsor was Prince of Wales, he was scheduled to tour South America, and before he started out on that tour he spent months studying Spanish so that he could make public talks in the language of the country; and the South Americans love him for it.10. If we want to make friends, let’s greet people with animation and enthusiasm. E.g., Many companies train their telephone operators to greet all callers in a tone of voice that radiates interest and enthusiasm. The caller feels the company is concerned about them. Let’s remember that when we answer the telephone tomorrow.11. Showing a genuine interest in others not only wins friends for you, but may develop in its customers a loyalty to your company.E.g., In an issue of the publication of the National Bank of North America of New York was published a letter from Madeline Rosedale, a depositor, in which Madeline expressed his appreciation of the bank’s staff because of the staff’s enthusiasm and greeting.Charles R. Walters, of one of the large bank in New York City ,was assigned to prepare a confidential report on a certain corporation. He succeeded in getting every bit of information he wanted by giving the president stamps which the president’s son want to get and talking about stamps and the president’s son.C. M. Knaphle, Jr., of Philadelphia had tried for years to sell fuel to a large chain–store organization. He succeeded in getting an order by talking about the advantages of the spread of the chain stores withan executive of the large chain–store organization.12. For a long time ago, a hundred years before Christ was born a famous old Roman poet, Publilius Syrus, remarked;”We are interested in others when they are interested in us.”13. A show of interest, as with every other principle of human relations, must be sincere. It must pay off not only for the person showing the interest, but for the person receiving the attention. It is a two-way street-both parties benefit.E.g., Martin Ginsberg, who took our Course in Long Island New York, reported how the special interest a nurse took in him profoundly affected his life. It was Thanksgiving Day and he was ten years old. He was in a welfare ward of a city hospital and was scheduled to undergo major orthopedic surgery the next day. As the day went on, he became overwhelmed with the feeling of loneliness, despair and fear.A young student nurse heard his sobbing and came over to him. She talked to him and tried to calm his fears. Even though she was scheduled to go off duty at 4 P.M., she stayed on her own time until almost 11 P.M., She played games with him, talked to him and stayed with him until he finally fell asleep. He said, ”Many thanksgivings have come and gone since I was ten, but one never passes without me remembering that particular one and my feelings of frustration, fear, loneliness and the warmth and tenderness of the stranger that somehow made it all bearable.”14. If you want to others to like you, if you want to develop real friendships, if you want to help others at the same time as you help yourself, keep this principle in mind:Become genuinely interested in other people.。
