At home, his dad never listened to music, and one of his boarding school teachers labelled him tonedeaf. But last month he started to play the harmonica (口琴) on the streets of Bradford. People clapped, danced and threw coins into his case for the local food bank. Horam caught himself thinking, “How, at the age of 79, do I come to be playing music to people on the streets?”The question preoccupied him, because, some years ago at a family gathering, Gavin, his eldest son, said,“You know what, Dad? It can't be coincidental. We must have got our musical abilities from you.” Horam has three sons and they cover a range of instruments. He was surprised. “There can't be music in me, because I c an't play!” he said.Eight years ago, Horam, a retired civil servant, was on his way back from a tripwith his family. He discovered a talent for improvisation (即兴表演), responding to a note within a millisecond without batting an eyelid. “I don't play by ear. I play by heart.” Actually, Horam says, “My harmonica plays me—how I feel, what I am, and what I've been.”Music has enriched life with frien dship and made Horam feel“part of something much bigger”than himself. “At a time when the circle of life might be shrinking, mine is expanding,” he says. “Maybe we never know completely who we are or what we can do.”4.Why did Horam play the harmonica on the streets of Bradford?A.To recall the good old days.B.To beg food from passersby.C.To realize his childhood dream.D.To collect money for charity.5.What is Gavin's attitude to his father's musical ability?A.Positive. But four bridges are particularly unusual: each 26foot structure was fashioned from concrete by a giant robotic printer. They are part of a revolution (大变革) that is seeing 3D printers move from the tabletop to the construction lot.3D construction printers work a lot like homeoffice ones, except instead of ink they spit out concrete. Nozzles (喷嘴) run back and forth on rails, with computers controlling the time and speed, so that a layer of concrete is laid down where needed. By the time the slowmoving nozzle reaches the end of its path, the layer has usually hardened just enough to lay down another on top of the first, building up, layerbylayer, a homesized wall. With a precise pattern of deposit, the nozzle can leave space for windows, doors, and other design and structural elements. It takes about 24 hours of printing to build a 500squarefoot singlefloor home. “The printing process can complete the structure and finish the inner and outer surfaces at the same time,”says Jason Ballard, cofounder and CEO of ICON, an Austin, Texas company. “That normally takes 20 people representing five or six different trades to work several days.”3D construction printers are also less wasteful. A typical home construction site generates about four tons of waste. Because the concrete used in conventional construction is applied uniformly, regardless of whether it's needed for structural support in a particular area or not, about half of the concrete is wasted. 3D printers, however, can vary the thickness of a structure with great precision, using concrete only where it is really needed. So far, printing buildings has been a modest, lowcost affair. For instance, ICON printed a house in Austin, Texas, intended for families, at a cost of $10,000, and has a contract to print a total of six. Then it plans to take a printer down to Latin America to build 50 lowcost homes there.12.Why does the author discuss the nozzle in Paragraph 2?A.To analyze why the nozzle is so important.B.To confirm 3D construction printers are slow.C.To explain how 3D construction printers work.D.To argue the precision of the nozzle needs improving.13.What does Jason Ballard say about 3D construction printers?A.They are highly efficient.B.They are a little complex.C.They increase the building cost.D.They will replace builders one day.14.How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed?A.By making a contrast.B.By giving examples.C.By describing a process.D.By analyzing causes.15.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Printed Bridges Become a Fashion in the NetherlandsB.3D Printing Technology Is Key to Housing ProblemsC.Your House Is Going to Be Greener in the FutureD.Your Next House May Come Out of a 3D Printer第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

For some reason, words with silent letters have always bothered me.For example, consider these words: know, design, island, school, wrist, naughty, and salmon. All of these words have at least one letter that is not typically pronounced, and these words are just a very small part of words with silent letters in them. Some words are even worse, consider this word: colonel. Not only are some letters not pronounced, but letters that are not even there are pronounced.Even foreign languages, especially French, are guilty of this needless complexity and confusion.I know there must be some main historical reasons why the words are spelled and pronounced the way they are, but that does not mean bad traditions must continue to survive.Especially if they are no longer logical.Unfortunately, there is very little that anyone can do for it, because there’s no group of people who can change or have the right to change the English language for everyone. However, the only thing we can do is make changes in the way we talk and write in hopes that it catches on.For example, I pronounce the letter “l” in salmon on purpose to make people annoyed and to sound more different or complicated.I even pronounce colonel the correct or French way.I can only hope these two minor changes to the English language make sense to you, and you will help to keep up these minor changes forever in your everyday life.67.We can learn from the passage ________.A.colonel is pronouncedB.salmon is pronouncedC.all the words with silent letters come from FrenchD.linguists will solve the problem of dumb letters68.Which of the following is the main reason for silent letters?A.French language. B.Historical reasons.C.Some linguists D.Bad traditions.69.The underlined phrase “catches on” probably means “________”.A.becomes popular B.gets acrossC.follows the fashions D.doesn’t fall behind70.Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A.Troubles in everyday life B.Traps in English wordsC.Words with silent letters D.Necessary changes of languages第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)依照短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
北京市高考英语二轮复习专题精讲 第8讲 阅读理解1(上)

第8讲阅读理解经典精讲(上)题一:Sometimes,the simplest ideas are the best. For example,to absorb heat from the sun to heat water, you need large, flat, black surfaces. One way to do that is to build those surfaces specially, on the roofs of buildings. But why go to all that trouble when cities are full of black surfaces already, in the form of asphalt (柏油) roads?Ten years ago, this thought came into the mind of Arian de Bondt, a Dutch engineer. He finally persuaded his boss to follow it up. The result is that their building is now heated in winter and cooled in summer by a system that relies on the surface of the road outside. The heat collector is a system of connected water pipes. Most of them run from one side of the street to the other, just under the asphalt road. Some, however, dive deep into the ground. When the street surface gets hot in summer, water pumped through the pipes picks up this heat and takes it underground through one of the diving pipes. At a depth of 100 meters lies a natural aquifer (蓄水层) into which several heat exchangers (交换器) have been built. The hot water from the street runs through these exchangers, warming the groundwater, before returning to the surface through another pipe. The aquifer is thus used as a heat store. In winter, the working system is changed slightly. Water is pumped through the heat exchangers to pick up the heat stored during summer. This water goes into the building and is used to warm the place up. After performing that task, it is pumped under the asphalt and its remaining heat keeps the road free of snow and ice.1. Which of the following is true according to the first two paragraphs?A. Arian de Bondt got his idea from his boss.B. Large, flat, black surfaces need to be built in cities.C. The Dutch engineer’s system has been widely used.D. Heat can also be collected from asphalt roads.2. For what purpose are the diving pipes used?A. To absorb heat from the sun.B. To store heat for future use.C. To turn solar energy into heat energy.D. To carry heat down below the surface.3. From the last paragraph we can learn that________.A. some pipes have to be rearranged in winterB. the system can do more than warming up the buildingC. the exchangers will pick up heat from the street surfaceD. less heat may be collected in winter than in summer4. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?A. What we shall do if the system goes wrong.B. What we shall do if there are no asphalt roads.C. How the system cools the building in summer.D. How the system collects heat in spring and autumn.题二:Have you ever noticed the color of the water in a river or stream after a heavy rainfall? What do you think caused this change in color? It is soil that has been washed into the river from the riverbank or from the nearby fields. Components of SoilSoil is made up of a number of layers (层) , each having its own distinctive color and texture. The upper layer is known as the litter. It acts like a blanket, limiting temperature changes and reducing water loss. The topsoil layer is made up of small particles of rock mixed with rotten plant and animal matter called humus (腐殖质), which is black and gives the topsoil its dark color. This layer is usually rich in nutrients, oxygen, and water. Below the topsoil is the subsoil, a layer that contains more stones mixed with only small amounts of organic matter. This layer is lighter in color because of the lack of humus. Beneath the soil lies a layer of bedrock. Soil forms from the bottom up. Over time bedrock is attacked by rain, wind, frost, and snow. It is gradually broken down into smaller particles in a process called weathering. Plants begin to grow, and rotten materials enrich the topsoil. Most of the soil in Eastern Canada ,for example ,was formed from weathered rock that was exposed when the ice disappeared 12,000 years ago.Water Beneath the SoilSurface water collects and flows above the ground in lakes ,ponds, and rivers. Once in the soil or rock, it is called groundwater. Gravity pulls groundwater through the soil in a process called percolation(渗透). Eventually the water reaches a layer called the water table. Under this is bedrock through which water cannot percolate. As water percolates downward, it dissolves organic matter and minerals from the soil and carries them to deeper layers. This causes a serious problem because plants require these nutrients for growth.Soil pHSoil can be acidic, neutral, or basic. The pH of the soil is determined by the nature of the rock from which it was formed, and by the nature of the plants that grow and rot in it.The acidity of rain and snow can lower the pH of the groundwater that enters the soil. By burning fossil fuels such as coal ,oil and gasoline, humans have been contributing to higher levels of acidity in many soils. When fossil fuels are burned, gases are released into the air and then fall back to earth as acid rain. Acid soil increases the problem of carrying nutrients to lower soil levels. As nutrients are removed, soil is less fertile. Plants grow more slowly in acidic soil, and also become easily attacked by diseases.1. The layer of soil that provides necessary nutrients for plant growth is called________.A. litterB. TopsoilC. humusD. subsoil2. According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?A. Soil forms from weathered rock on the earth surface.B. The deeper layer of soil is darker in color than the surface soil.C. Air pollution is partially responsible for acid soil.D. Groundwater tends to carry away nutrients for plant growth.3. We can infer from the passage that the water table lies________.A. between the topsoil layer and the subsoil layerB. in the subsoil layer above bedrockC. between the subsoil layer and bedrockD. in the bedrock layer beneath the subsoil4. The underlined word “dissolve” is used to express the idea that organic matter and minerals from soil are________.A. rushed away into the riverB. cleaned and purified by waterC. destroyed and carried away by waterD. mixed with water and become part of it第8讲阅读理解经典精讲(上)主讲教师:李俊和北京四中英语教研组长题一:语篇解读:文章介绍了怎样依靠外面的柏油马路表面在冬天给楼房供暖,在夏天给楼房降温。

Uncertainty is all around us, never more so than today. Whether it concerns your health or relationships, much of what lies ahead in life remains uncertain. We’re all different in how much uncertainty we can tolerate in life. Some people seem to enjoy taking risks and living unpredictable lives, while others find the randomness of life deeply annoying. But all of us have a limit. If you feel controlled by uncertainty and worry, it’s important to know that you’re not alone; many of us are in the same boat.To cope with all this uncertainty, many of us use worrying as a tool for trying to predict the future and avoid unpleasant surprises. Worrying can make it seem like you have some control over uncertain circumstances. You may also believe that it will help you find a solution to your problems or prepare you for the worst. Unfortunately, long-term worrying just robs you of enjoyment in the present and weakens your energy. But there are healthier ways to cope with uncertainty.Identify your uncertainty trigger (诱发因素). A lot of uncertainty tends to be self-generated. However, some can be generated by external sources, such as reading media stories that focus on bad news, or simply communicating with anxious friends. By recognizing your triggers, you can take action to avoid or reduce your exposure to them.Shift your attention. Focus on solvable worries, taking action on those aspects of a problem that you can control, or simply go back to what you were doing. When the feelings of uncertainty return, refocus your mind on the present moment and your own breathing.1.How are people different in tolerating uncertainty in life?2.Why do many people use worrying as a tool to deal with uncertainty?3.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.▶ Knowing the triggers of your uncertainty, you can learn to expose yourself to them.4.What are you most uncertain about right now? How will you deal with it?
