(Answer:AF)

例如:horrible、nice、pleasant、impoverished、terrible、dying。

Question 1It is truly paradoxical that the Amazon, the lushestof all rainforests, is rooted in the most _____ of allsoils.A. acidic
Question 2Cynics believe that people who _____ compli-ments do so in order to be praised twice.A. conjure up (想像出,用咒语召唤)B. covet (垂涎,妄想)C. deflect (偏离,转折,放弃)D. grasp (抓住,领会)E. shrug off (蔑视,摆脱)F. understand (理解,推理)(Answer: C E)解题思路:Cynics(犬儒学派:古代希腊哲学学派,其成员认为美德是惟一的善的东西,自制是惟一获得美德的方法)作为特征词提示我们句子里面存在反义对立,因为犬儒主义者对事情的看法和常人不同。
Question 3A restaurant's menu is generally reflected in itsdecor; however despite this restaurant's _____ appear-ance it is pedestrian in the menu it offers.A. elegant (雅致的)B. tawdry (华而不实的)C. modern (现代的)D. traditional (传统的)E. conventional (传统的)F. chic (别致的)(Answer: A F)解题思路:由特征词however引导反义转折,两句话的意思应该相反,但实际上仅从后半句也是可以解题的。
New Oriental English ・13Question 4International financial issues are typically _____ by theUnited States media because they are too technical to makesnappy headlines and too inaccessible to people who lack abackground in economics.A. neglected (被忽视)B. slighted (被忽视)C. overrated (被高估)D. hidden (被隐藏)E. criticized (被批判)F. repudiated (被批判)(Answer: A B)解题思路:这是由特征词because引导的同义因果关系题目。
由too...to...
Question 5While in many ways their personalities could nothave been more different — she was ebullient where hewas glum, relaxed where he was awkward, garrulouswhere he was _______ — they were surprisingly wellsuited.A. solicitous (挂念期望的)B. munificent (宽宏慷慨的)C. irresolute (犹豫不决的)D. laconic (言简意赅的)E. fastidious (挑剔苛求的)F. taciturn (沉默寡言的)(Answer: D F)解题思路:While引导反义转折,后半句说的是他和她是well suited的状态,因此前半句应该是不和谐也就是different的情况,这种不和谐实际上出现了三个并列描述,因此从前两个描述中可以确定她是积极活跃的状态,并且对应的他是消极沉默的状态。
