Celebrated on the day following the full moon, this year 's festival happens to be on March 19th.As with most Indian festivals, this one also has many different folk stories. Most of them center around the success of good over evil. The most popular one is about a king, who hates his son Prahlada for loving the creator of the Universe —Lord Vishnu. When every attempt to stop him fails, his sister, Holika believed to beimmune(免疫的) to fire, joins in the effort by inviting the young boy to sit with her inside a huge fire. Helped by the power of Lord Vishnu, Prahlada escapes safely, while the evil Holika is burned to death. To remember this event, huge outdoor fires are lit in the night before Holi in order to clean the air of evil spirits and to celebrate the death of the evil. So what 'sso great about this day? On this day, everybody is fair game, no matter how old or how young. At about midday, the splashing comes to an end and people living close to oceans or rivers usually take a bath in the water to clean themselves before going home to a delicious home-made big dinner and awell-deserved short sleep, following this full day of fun and activities.64. For many years we lived next door to each other, and she spent as much time in my garden as she did her own. After the flowers became plentiful each summer, she would cut colorful bouquets(花束)to enjoy inside the house—both hers and mine. I would often come home from work and find a beautiful arrangement(布置) of fresh flowers on my coffee table.Shortly before Christmas one year, a local flower shop offered a bouquet-a-month special. It seemed to be a great way to thank her for all of the flowers she had given me through the years. After the holidays, in early January, I drove her to the flower shop to pick up her first month's bouquet. the small fresh colorful bouquet would hardly fill a small vase.I was so embarrassed(尴尬的).However, after we returned home, she began to arrange the flowers she had received. “Mom, I'm sorry, ”I told her.“I can't believe how skimpy that bouquet is.”She looked at me and smiled.“It’s okay,” she said “It allows me to better enjoy the beauty of each one.”Mom's words helped me to realize something bigger and more important—when we have too many good things, we often fail to enjoy the beauty of each one. Thanks, Mom, for helping me understand that less is sometimes more.1.According to paragraph 1, which of the following is TRUE?A. What should I do?Abraham, NebraskaThere are many ways to come up with ideas, one of which is to write down a list of your experiences, as well as things from your imagination. When you want to write, look in the notebook for ideas.Books for writers often have good suggestions, too. One we like is Spilling Ink: A Yong Writer’s Handbook by Anne Mazer and E llen Potter. Perhaps your library has it.My classmates keep asking about a new movie I’ve seen. But I don’t want to spoil it for them. What should I do?Corinne (by e-mail)You could ask your classmates whether they are sure they want to know and if they insist, go ahead and tell them. No matter what a person’s ability is at the beginning, it’s likely that everyone will leave camp with improved skills.Sharing a common interest may make conversations easier. Smile, be friendly, and have a sense of humor. Before long, you may find that you’ve made some good friends.Someone invited me to a birthday party. When I got there, kids were doing stuff I’m not interested in, like watching scary movies. I told them my mom would pick me up, so I just left. This purpose of the text is to _____.A. give adviceB. tell storiesC. find friendsD. share interestsDWe can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?" "When I got that great job, did Jim, as a friend, really feel good about it? Or did he envy(嫉妒) my luck?" "And was Paul friendly just because I had a car?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it is too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends, or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meanings. And if we do not really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. If someone tells you, "You're a lucky dog!" Is he really on your side? If he says, "You're a lucky guy!", that is being friendly. But what about "a lucky dog?" There is a bit of envy in those words. Maybe h e doesn’t see it himself. But the word “dog” puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck."Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for" is another phrase that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem. But covered under this phrase is the thought that your problem is not important at all. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date(约会) for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Is what he says shown by the tone(语调) of voice? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save your another mistake.12. According to the author, the reason why we misunderstand our friends is that _____.A. we tend to believe what they sayB. we tend to doubt what our friends sayC. people usually say one thing but mean anotherD. people usually don’t express themselves clearly13. AOne of the major problems in our economy(经济)is inflation(通货膨胀), a situation in which prices are going up faster than salary(工资). Thus, a person has to work more hours to pay for the same thing. For example, let’s say that this year a loaf of bread costs $1.00 and average salary in the United Sates is $10.00 per hour. That means a person could earn enough money to buy a loaf of bread in one-tenth of an hour, or six minutes. Then, halfway through the year, the price of the bread goes up to $1.25, while salary stay the same. That means that a person now has to work one-eighth of an hour—seven and a half minutes to buy the same loaf of bread. Now let’s say that at the end of the year, salary go up to $11.00 per hour, but the price of bread goes up to $1.50. Now a person has to work more than one-seventh of an hour—over eight minutes—to buy loaves of bread, employees will have less money left over to buy other things, Inflation means that the same money buys fewer things and everybody’s standard of living goes down, even if salaries are going up.Some kinds of inflation are worse than others. Moderate inflation does not distort (祖曲)relative prices or incomes seriously. Galloping inflation happens rapidly, say at a rate of 100percent or more within a year. And then there’s hyperinflation—inflation so serious that people try to get rid of their currency(货币)before prices rise further and make the money worthless. Times of hyperinflation are usually characterized by social and political disorder.1. The passage mainly wants to .A. list major economicB. discuss something about inflationC. explain why bread prices increaseD. state the types of inflation2. Why is “ a loaf of bread” repeatedly mentioned?A. To express dissatisfaction with the price of breadB. To show the effect of price changesC. To compare bread with other foodsD. Workers might lose their jobs if they show dissatisfactionC. People will save money rather than spend it.D. People must work longer to buy the same things4. Which of the following belongs to the type of moderate inflation?A. People try to get rid of their currencyB. Inflation occurs at a rate of 100percent in a yearC. Incomes and relative prices rise slightlyD. There is social and political disorderBLet’s Go Bug Hunting More OftenKids spell love T-I-M-EOne fall afternoon I rushed home from the university where I taught. I then hurriedly cleaned the entry-way because a group of respectable ladies were coming by to pick up some good used clothing for a worthwhile cause; and then later a graduate student would be at our house to work on a very important thesis(论题)—one that I was certain would help a lot with research. As I paused to catch a breath, I heard Christi talking with a friend on the telephone. Her words went something like this: “ Mom is cleaning house—some ladies we don’t even know are coming by to pick up some old worn-out clothes… and a college student is coming out to work on a thesis… no, I don’t know what a thesis is… I just know Mom isn’t doing anything important… and she won’t go bug(小虫)hunting with me.”Before Christi and hung up the phone, I had put on my jeans and old tennis shoes, persuaded Del to do likewise, pinn ed a note to the door telling the graduate student I ’d be back soon, and set out the box of used clothing on the front porch(门廊)with a note on it that Del, Christi and I had gone bug hunting.5.
