It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week. Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking(追求) material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours’work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and down-shifting is one of them.Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who down-shifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny(保姆). Most evenings, Daniel wouldn't get home until eight or nine o'clock, and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm here,”says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It's taken some getting used to, but it's been worth it. We have to think twice now, about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it's made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.”Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I'm not really a country girl, but I suppose I'm gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children..”41. This passage is most likely to be found in ______.A. a travel guideB. a story bookC. a technical reportD. a geography magazineCIt is natural for young people, at times, to blame their parents for most of the misunderstandings between them. They have always complained that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems, and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationships. I think it is true that parents often look down upon their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt, when young. For example, young people like doing things without careful consideration: it is one of their ways of showing that they can accept a challenge. Older people worry more easily: most of them plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected. So my advice to you is this: when you want to borrow the family car or get your mother to mend something for you, you will have better success if you can possibly ask in advance.Young people often annoy their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles,in entertainers and music. This is not the main reason. They feel cut off from the adult world. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music and entertainers, or vocabulary, clothes and hairstyles annoy their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are better, at least in a small way, and they are leaders in style and taste.Sometimes you don’t obey because you do not want your parents to accept what you do. If they did accept, it looks as if you are tricking your own age group. But in that case, you are supposing that you are the underdog: you can’t win but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough, after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents’control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself. If you plan to control your life, co-operation can be part of the plan. You can impress others, especially parents, with your sense of responsibility, so that they will give you the right to do what you want to do.48. The underlined word “underdog”in the 5th paragraph refers to a person who _______.A. keeps dogs as petsB. seems less likely to succeedC. 1ikes to cheat his own age groupD. looks down upon others around himDDr. Sylvia Earle wants you to stop eating fish. It’s not because fish are endangered, though wild fish stocks in many oceans are very low. It's not because they're bad for you, though fish in many areas are exposed to poisonous things in the water. It's because they're smart. “Fish are sensitive. They have personalities,”says the marine biologist(海洋生物学家). For Earle, eating a fish would be like eating a dog or a cat. “I would never eat anyone I know personally.”There's a lot more to fish than meets the eye: they talk to each other, they like to be touched, and they have behavior that can seem very human. They can remember things and learn from experience. Earle and a growing number of animal rights activists see these as strong arguments against eating fish altogether. The activists also point out that fish feel pain and fish suffer horribly on their way from the sea to the supermarket. “While it may seem obvious that fish are able to feel pain, like every other animal, some people think of fish as swimming vegetables,”says Dr. Lynne Sneddon. “Really, it's kind of a moral(道德的) question. Is the enjoyment you get from fishing (or eating fish) more important than the pain of the fish?”Fishermen and fried fish lovers are doubtful. “I've never seen a smart fish,”says Marie Swaringen as she finishes off a plate of fish at a Seattle seafood restaurant. “If they were very smart, they wouldn't get caught.”“For years, everyone's been telling us to eat fish because it's so good for us,”says another diner. “Now I've got to feel guilty while I'm eating my fish? What are they going to think of next? Don't eat salad because cucumbers have feelings?"52. Dr. Sylvia Earle discourage people from eating fish because _______.A. there are not that many wild fish in the oceanB. fish actually are sensitive and have personalitiesC. some ocean fish contain poisonous substancesD. fish are like dogs or cats that people know personally53. We can infer from the passage that _______.A. all people don't agree with the idea to stop eating fishB. people will be persuaded not to eat fish in the futureC. stopping eating fish will lead to people's not eating vegetablesD. we shouldn't care too much about the feeling of fish54.
