Therefore, although Moussambani could barely swim, he became the only person to turn up to join the team and was given a ticket straight to the Olympic Games. His only training was eight months of practice in a 20m hotel pool. After jumping off the block he set a quick pace early on but quickly grew tired, struggling to finish the race without drowning. Calligraphy is a special category (范畴) in China’s world of fine arts. Through the centuries Chinese characters have changed constantly and are mainly divided into five categories today: the seal script (zhuan shu), official script (li shu), regular script (kai shu), running script (xing shu) and cursive script (cao shu).Calligraphy involves a great deal of theory and requires many skills. Among the most outstanding calligraphers in ancient China were Wang Xizhi, Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, and Liu Gongquan, who are known for pioneering their own styles. In writing calligraphy, one will need a brush, paper, an ink stick and an ink stone, commonly referred to as the “Four Treasures of the Study”. There are different types of brushes. White goat hair, black rabbit hair and yellow weasel hair brushes are the main ones. According to their function, brushes are classified into three groups: hard, soft and medium. Brush sticks are usually made of bamboo, wood, or porcelain (瓷器); ivory or jade sticks are rare and precious. The ink stick is a unique pigment (颜料)used for Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy. The most famous ink stick is hui mo(Anhui ink stick), made from pines that grow on Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province. Clean water is needed to grind the ink stick. Press the ink stick hard and rub it lightly, slowly and evenly against the ink slab to make thick, liquid ink. While paper comes in many varieties, Xuan paper, produced in Xuanzhou (today’s Anhui Province), is considered the best for Chinese calligraphy. The paper is soft and fine textured, suitable for conveying the artistic expression of both Chinese calligraphy and painting. With a good tensile (张力) strength and moth-proof (防蛀虫) quality, the paper can be preserved for a long time.Ink stones or ink slabs (平板) have been classified into three categories: Duan, She and Tao. Features common to all three are hardness and fineness. Although the stone is hard and fine, it is not dry or slippery. Using a hard and smooth stone, liquid ink can be produced easily by rubbing the ink stick against the stone.By handling the brush and ink skillfully and carefully, the artist can produce an infinite variety of calligraphic styles and forms.1. How many varieties of Chinese calligraphy are mainly there today?A. One.B. Three.C. Five.D. Six.2. What is NOT probably necessary when writing calligraphy?A. A brush.B. Paper.C. Ink stick.D. Wood3. However, debate surrounds these artifacts and whether or not countries should return these pieces of culture if they were stolen or forcefully taken during colonization(殖民时期).By the 18th and 19th centuries, European countries such as Britain, France, and the Netherlands had colonized many African and Asian countries. During their rule, they seized artifacts and brought them to their own countries, where they are now on show in museums.Over the years, European museums have been asked to give back the artifacts. In 2009, Egypt demanded that France return five pieces of a wall painting from the tomb of Tekati. In 2012, Nigeria asked for the return of thirty-two cultural items from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 2017, the Government of Benin in West Africa tried to reach an agreement with the British Museum to return their Benin Bronzes. The debate regarding this issue took a turn in 2018 when under President Emmanuel Macron, a report was released that directed that all heritage objects brought to French museums be returned. With the official release of this report, museums all across Europe began reconsidering their previous policies(政策) on colonial treasures. In France, twenty-seven artifacts had been identified for return, but only one has been returned. Then, on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, France’s National Assembly officially passed a bill promising the return of these heritage artifacts, but didn’t arrange a certain date. Those who suggest returning these objects to their homes argue that with technology enabling online museum tours, returning these artifacts to their homeland does not takeaway the opportunity to learn about them. Furthermore, the country owning the objects will receive a significant part of their heritage back, and these artifacts will be given a chance to be truly appreciated in homeland. Those against the return hold the view that culture is a shared treasure and the artifacts are in fact “cultural ambassadors (大使)” that promote understanding. They believe that while stealing them was wrong, history is full of “good” and “bad” actors. Moreover, they feel that keeping the cultural objects in the current museums has kept millions of artifacts safe from damage.5. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A. Requests for the return of cultural objects.B. Discussion about stolen artifacts’ protection.C. Debate on whether to give back the stolen artifacts.D. Demands for the museums’ ownership of the artifacts.6. Why did the museums reconsider their policies?A. French president promised to well protect the artifacts in the museum.B. French government agreed to send the artifacts back to their homeland.C. European countries officially agreed to give back the colonial treasures.D. President Emmanuel Macron demanded European museums return the artifacts.7. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?A. It is impossible for France to keep its promise.B. French government is confident about its policy.C. The stolen treasures can’t be back to their homeland soon.D. Artifacts are more appreciated in France than in other countries.8. People who consider the artifacts as “cultural ambassadors” may agree that __________.A. mistakes in history need correcting in timeB. artifacts will be better protected in homelandC. heritage objects belong to all the human beingsD. online museum tours will be popular in the future三、七选五The jobs of the future have not yet been invented.9 By helping them develop classic skills that will serve them well no matter what the future holds.CuriosityYour children need to be deeply curious.10 Ask kids, “What ingredients(配料)can we add to make these pancakes even better next time?” and then try them out. Ingredients make the pancakes better? What could we try next time?CreativityTrue creativity is the ability to take something existing and create something new.11 There are a dozen different things you can do with them. Experimenting with materials to create something new can go a long way in helping them develop their creativity.Personal skillsUnderstanding how others feel can be a challenge for kids. We know what’s going on inside our own head, but what about others? Being able to read people helps kid from misreading a situation and jumping to false conclusions.12 “Why do you think she's crying?” “Can you tell how that man is feeling by looking at his face?” “If someone were to do that to you, how would you feel?”Self Expression13 There are many ways to express thoughts and ideas―music, acting, drawing, building, photography. Speakers at recent TED events have shared simple and inexpensive solutions that can solve everyday problems.FUEL BRIQUETTES (燃料砖)In the developing world, smoke from indoor cooking kills more than 2 million children each year. In fact, it’s the number one cause of death of children under five. Amy Smith, founder of D-Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), discovered a way to make a safe cooking fuel. The material she uses is also free and plentiful: farm waste.Smith invented a low-cost device that turns farm waste into fuel briquettes. These briquettes produce smoke that is less dangerous than the smoke from other fuel. They also burn hotter andlast longer. Farmers can make these briquettes from readily available waste. This invention has an economic benefit, too. Farmers can buy the device for $2 and sell briquettes they don’t use. Smith estimates (估算) that this can increase a farmer’s income by $500 a month.DISASTER SHELTERSOver 31 million people worldwide lose their homes everyyear due to natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. After these disasters, many people live in terrible conditions—intents or in large stadiums with no privacy. Graphic designerMichael McDaniel invented inexpensive and temporary housingfor people in these situations.Called the Reaction Ex, these shelters are small, one-roomhouses that comfortably hold up to four people. They’re madefrom a plastic that is strong, recyclabl e, and super light. In fact, they’re so light that they can be lifted by hand and are very portable as well. McDaniel hopes that his invention will provide an affordable solution to help people rebuild their lives after a natural disaster.1. My learning disability made my school days very challenging from an early age. I went to a special school where I got plenty of extra help. Still, I suffered the rest of my school days in public schools. My life improved remarkably when I discovered art. The art world gave me a chance to express myself without words. I went to a workshop and gradually got good at making things with clay (黏土). Here I learned my first important lesson: disabled as I was in language, I could still be smart and well express myself with clay. And my confidence came along.I got my next lesson from rock climbing. It was a fun thing but I was scared from the start. I soon noticed it wasn’t a talent thing; it was practice. So I did it more. After about five years of climbing, I found myself in Yosemite Valley on a big wall. I learned that if you fall in love with something and do it all the time, you will get better at it.Later I decided to apply my previous experience to learning how to read and write. Every day I practiced reading and writing, which I used to avoid as much as possible. After two hard years, I was literate (有读写能力的).Having gone through the long process with art, rock climbing, and reading and writing, now I’ve got to a point in my life where I know I am smart enough to dive into an area that is totally unknown, hard, but interesting.4. The terrible accident causes a sudden sharp pain to people around the world, “What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore.”But the good news is that there is at least one way of seeing them, namely via a video game called Assassin’s Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre Dame as it was before the fire. In addition, with VR technology, which is already quite mature, one can even look around the undamaged Notre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital technology could help to better protect architectural cultural heritage (建筑文化遗产).The idea of digitizing ancient buildings, making digital models of them so their data can be saved, dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning the ancient buildings with lasers, building 3D models with hundreds of images, as well as measuring(测量) everything precisely, engineers can make a copy as “same” as the real one.As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital replica or digital copy has great practical value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics(文物) without touching them, which helps protect them. The virtual tour of Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics more famous by spreading awareness about them via the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hannover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting it in the following years. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics. Even if the original ones are damaged one day, people can still know what they were like and can build a replica if desired.Time is the biggest problem to architectural heritage. Maybe we will have better technologiesin the future, but the digital technology offers a practical way to preserve architectural cultural heritage at the moment.1. What can we see about Notre Dame in the video game?A. The big fire.B. Its original look.C. The damaged parts.D. Its wooden shape.2. What will engineers do to create a digital replica of the ancient buildings?A. Improve the technology needed.B. Build 3D models of full size.C. Scan the photos of the buildings.D. Measure all the parts precisely.3. How does the author prove the digital copy has great practical value?A. By comparison.B. By listing data.C. By giving examples.D. By classification.4. What is the best title of the passage?A. The Damage of Notre DameB. The Value of Digital ReplicaC. VR Technology Helps Repair the Cultural RelicsD. Digital Technology Helps Protect Ancient Buildings二、阅读D篇At the heart of psychology is understanding behavior, and understanding behavior has much to do with understanding the brain. Neuroscientists (神经系统科学家) have become more efficient at mapping the brain and have gained more understanding of how the brain develops and works. Truly, differences in behavior as we age and between genders, are most likely explained by the physical state of and changes in our brains.Around the age of 12, it is believed that the areas of the brain that are used most will be strengthened and cells in the brain that are not used tend to die. What you do with your brain in your teen years probably decides how your brain will work for the rest of your life. If a teen spends endless hours watching TV, the neural connections that help the brain process TV are what will be strengthened. It is clear, therefore, that how young people spend their time is of great importance.Surprisingly, and different from earlier beliefs, the brain is still developing even in the early twenties. Areas of the brain that are related to emotion, decision making, reasoning, and problem solving are still not fully developed. This may go some way toward explaining why car accident rates in young people are significantly higher than those among older people. Young people don’t have the necessary skills to make complex judgments while driving. There are also differences in the way brains develop when it comes to gender. It appears that girls are ready to process more challenging information earlier than boys, with the area of the brain responsible for this activity peaking at the age of 14 to 16 in boys, a full two years later than girls. In addition, studies have shown that girls andboys process language input in different parts of their brains. Girls typically tend to do better than boys in language, which means that they have more brain matter responsible for language skills. This kind of research raises important questions about how boys and girls should be taught in school to maximize (使最大化) their learning. For example, the idea of single-sex education should perhaps be taken into consideration. Experts say that we would do well to revisit the timing of the subjects taught in school, as some parts of the brain develop before others. Additionally, what we understand about the teenage brain should perhaps be taken into consideration when laws are being made with regard to the minimum (最低的) driving age.5. According to the passage, young people are more likely to have car accidentsbecause _______.A. they fail to realize the importance of skillsB. they don’t have the necessary skills in drivingC. certain areas in their brains are not fully developedD. their brains tend to be influenced by their emotions6. What can we learn from the passage?A. Earlier beliefs show the brain is still developing in the early twenties.B. Girls are better at language because they are devoted to language learning.C. How people spend their time when they’re teenagers affects their future life.D. Gender makes no difference when it comes to the physical state of the brain.7. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.A. single-sex education may benefit teenagersB. the time when school starts should be put offC. lawmakers will lower the minimum driving ageD. the number of subjects in school might be changed8. Which would be the best title for this passage?A. Age and the BrainB. Genders and the BrainC. Mapping the BrainD.
