5. 强制性公示语（Mandatory Public Signs）
强制性公示语要求公众必须采取或者不能采取某种行 为，语言应用直白、强硬，毫无商量余地，多用祈使 句，起警示、强制作用；违反者往往受到一定的处罚 或者制裁，这类公示语旨在约束公众行为、维护社会 正常秩序与公众安全方面起作用。比如禁止摆卖 （Vendors Prohibited）、严禁超车（Overtaking Prohibited）、禁扔废弃物（No Littering）等。

一、公示语的定义
公示语是指在公共场所展示的文字，具有特 殊的交际功能，以及提供信息和完成指令的作 用。具体而言，路标、广告、商品说明书、旅 游指南、社会宣传、告示等都是公示语。
二、公示语的特点
1）从功能考虑，公示语主要具有指示、提 示、指令和劝导的特点； 2）从风格考虑，公示语主要具有简洁、规 约和显目的特点；
4、劝导性公示语： 1）芳草萋萋，何忍踏之 Keep off the grass 2）请爱护花木 Keep off the grass 3）请爱护绿色生命 Keep off the grass 4）请勿折花木 Please don’t pick the flowers 5）生命呼吁绿色，人类需要蓝天 Please protect the environment. 6）山林防火 人人有责 Fire Hazard Area 7）带走杂物 Please do not litter. / No littering

原译：Soft Seat，Hard Seat
火车的“软席、硬席”属于中国特色，英美的火 车通常无此区分。国内许多车站，如，上海站的译 法是“Soft Seat”和“Hard Seat”，但这样的译法会让 许多外国旅客吃惊，搞不清车上的座位到底有多 “软”，到底有多“硬”。在“易懂”原则的指导 下，我们试将“软席、硬席”翻译成“Cushioned Seat”和“Ordinary Seat”。“cushioned seat”是指有垫 子的座位，当然就是“软”席；“ordinary seat”则是 普通的、没有垫子的座位，自然就是“硬”席了。 这样的译法也许有不忠实之嫌，但却能让英语者看 懂，能起到指示作用。

3.The translation principles 公示语汉英翻译的原则
在公示语功能特色和语言风格的基础上， 刘法公（2008）以纽马克的文本分类作为理 论依据，试提出公示语汉英翻译三原则：统 一（consistency）、简洁（conciseness）和 易懂（comprehensibility）。这三个翻译标 准基本上能反映公示语独特的社会功能和语 言特征，能满足公示语汉英翻译标准问题的 特殊需要。
