世界上每个人的指紋都不相同。
虽然唇纹、眼晴里的虹膜视网膜也人人不同，但指纹识别是生物识别技术中最常用最方便的一种。
指纹识别技术其实分警用和民用两大类，思路是很不同的。
派出所里给犯罪嫌疑人录指紋，不但要十个指头都录，而且都要旋转180度，因为犯罪现场找的指纹往往只是残缺不全的小片，所以指纹算法上用残缺指纹在指纹库里找嫌疑人，往往会找到很多个“可能是”的结果，需要专家一一比对排除。
民用指纹则不然，录指纹只录一个或两个平面指故用于身份识别，有的时候也要求完整无缺的平面指纹，算法比对只有“是”或“不是”两种结果。
但民用指纹库也可以为刑侦破案服务，比如广州市外来人口指纹库就为抓通缉犯作了不少贡献，有的还是在广州隐藏了几年的重案犯呢，改了名字改了相貌却改不了指紋。
指纹识别技术最核心的是算法，通过分析指纹的全局特征或局部特征，如脊、谷和终点、分叉点或分歧点，就可以从特征值中非常可靠地确认一个人的身份。
指纹虽然从出生到老不变，但小时候的成长发育会使指纹变长，中年发福会使指紋变宽，所以指紋算法是一种高难度的技术。
目前我国已经有了自主知识产权的指紋算法，在处理指紋变形等方面处于世界领先水平，美国一家公司前不久还花了十万美元购买了该算法的使用权呢。
指纹识別的另一关键技术是指紋图像采集技术。
以前基本上用光学技术，即用一个光源从棱镜反射在一个取像头的手指上，光线照亮指纹从而采集到指纹。
现在越来越多采用的是电容方式的半导体技术，按压到采集头上的手指的脊和谷，在手指表皮和芯皮之间产生不同的电容，芯片通过测量空间中的不同电容场得到完整的指纹。
第二种方式也叫“活体指纹”，采集时你把手指头涂黑了也一样可以取到清晰的
指纹，但只能手和身体连着才有生物电流，否则就无法采集到。
前不久西安天气很冷.某单位装了这样的指紋系统做考勤，有个女员工骑单车上班，结果指纹仪不认她那";水冷的小手"，后来用温水洗了洗手再来，指纹仪就认得她了，別人都笑她被冻得不是“活体”了。
这种采集技术的设备比光学方式小了几十倍，甚至可以做进你的手机里，使用很方便。
现代人身上现金少了，因为信用卡得到了广泛应用。
