Since the 15th century, the water spirit Mami Wata has taken many forms and names. She appears in different cultures throughout Africa, the Caribbean and the America. She is a very popular subject for artists.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C., currently h as a show that honors Mami Wata’s many faces. The exhibit shows how cultural influences and spirituality(灵性) change and grow throughout history. One of the first works in this exhibit was made in the 1950s by the Ovimbundu people of Angola. This expressive wooden sculpture is of a woman with a lower body like a fish. The woman raises her left hand as though she wants to tell you something.

Hawaii’s g overnor has announced plans to create an extensive electric-car-charging network by xx, in an effort to rid the islands of high-priced oil. The plan, announced today by governor Linda Lingle, calls for a public-private partnership with Better Place, a pany that develops basic equipment to support electric vehicles. The Silicon Valley start-up, which made a similar deal with cities in California’s San Francisco Bay Area last month, plans to install between 70,000 to 100,000 charging ports throughout Hawaii’s four largest islands.

Much of the electricity used to charge the vehicles is expected to e from renewable energy sources, according to Better Place CEO Shai Agassi. “Hawaii, with its ready access to renewable energy resources like solar, wind, wave and geothermal (地热), is the ideal location to serve as a blue print for the rest of the U.S. in terms of reducing our dependence on foreign oil,” said Mr. Agassi in a press conference. “Hawaii has made the promise to break its dependence on foreign oil, and is leading the way in coping with the most important economic and energy issues facing us today.”

Hawaii spends $7 billion on oil imports annually. The Wall Street Journal explains the scale of this burden: Hawaiians pay high electricity prices because costly oil is burned to produce power. The price of electricity ranges from 24.9 cents per kilowatt hour on Oahu to 38.5 cents on Hawaii, the big island, pared with an average of 8.9 cents in the continental U.S. Such high prices should encourage the development of renewable energy.

The island state is well-suited to electric vehicles, as drivers rarely travel more than 100 miles at a time, reducing the need for stations where exhausted batteries are exchanged for fresh ones. The New York Times notes that Better Place hopes to get started in such island economies that have high energy costs and short trips, and then subsequently bee more affordable as the charging networks are scaled up.

No One Dares to Help

On a recent Sunday, I was buying groceries in a supermarket when I heard the sound of a car accident. It was close but not very close, so I continued shopping.

As I took a right turn on Munadhama Street, I saw a man lying on the ground in a small pool of blood. He wasn't dead.

The idea of stopping to help or to take him to a hospital crossed my mind, but I didn't dare. Cars passed without stopping. Pedestrians and shop owners kept doing what they were doing, pretending nothing had happened.

I was still looking at the wounded man and blaming myself for not stopping to help. Other shoppers peered at him from a distance, sorrowful and sympathetic, but did nothing.

I went on to another grocery store, staying for about five minutes while shopping for tomatoes, onions and other vegetables. During that time, the man managed to sit up and wave to passing cars.

No one stopped. No one did anything. No one lifted a finger.

In order to protect the environment, 1,000 new white bikes in all have been added to Holland’s largest National Park De Hoge Veluwe and they are parked at any of the three entrances to the park for visitors.

From the passage we know that the writer witnessed a car accident and found no one wanted to help the injured driver, feeling helpless and guilty. As a result, the driver died on the road.

I was greatly shocked by the people’s reaction to this accident. People present there had different attitudes towards it, but they refused to lift a finger even when the injured driver sat up to wave to passing cars. If I had happened to be present at the scene, I would have e to his help and sent him to the nearest hospital or called for help by dialing the telephone number of an emergency center. We might have saved the driver’s life had we helped him without delay.

This accident reminded me of the other day when a woman was seen knocked down by a passing car and one of her legs was bleeding. Just at that time, I called a passer-by for help.
