The Sahara is huge — the largest desert on the earth. It covers about 3.5 million square miles of North Africa. That is about as big as the whole United States, but some scientists think that the Sahara will have shrunk by the year 3000.

Can someone explore the Sahara without going there? Yes. In fact, some of the most exciting discoveries about the Sahara have been made using “explorers” high in the sky. Thanks to these sky-high explorers, we know more about the history of this amazing desert.

The satellites send down images or pictures of the earth. Some are taken using the SIR-A radar system. It can make images that show what is under the ground below the sand. These images have shown geologists that, in ancient times, there were lakes, mountains, and valleys where the Sahara is now.

The Sahara was not always a forbidding desert. Long ago, dinosaurs and giant crocodiles lived there. After the dinosaurs became extinct, giraffes, elephants, hippos and other animals lived in the Sahara. So did people. They were shepherds (牧羊人) and hunters who had small villages and farmed the land. There were forests and grasslands where the desert is now.

Then, about 6,000 years ago, the climate began to change. Within a few centuries, the Sahara became the desert. Why? Scientists think that conditions in the atmosphere changed, so that the Sahara became warmer and drier. As the climate changed, fewer and fewer plants could grow there, and the people had to move to places where there was more water.

Satellite images help us make other discoveries about the Sahara. With these pictures, archaeologists can find where ancient people had their settlements. Paleontologists — scientists who study fossils to learn about prehistoric life — use satellite images to help them find the best places to search for clues to life millions of years ago.

56. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. The World’s Largest Desert

B. Exploring the Sahara with Satellites

C. The SIR-A Radar System

D. What Is the Sahara like?

57. How do the experts learn about t he Sahara’s past?

A. By studying the formation of the sand there.

B. By looking at the desert from space.

C. By studying the images sent back from space.

D. By examining the fossils of animals.

58. From the passage we can learn that ________.

A. the dinosaurs died out because it was too hot

B. it rained a lot in the Sahara a long time ago

C. few plants grew in the Sahara a long time ago

D. the Sahara was full of life a long time ago

Recently, sailors on the nuclear submarine that sank in the Baltic Sea were isolated from rescue workers, because their radio set was damaged. Luckily their radio operators knew the Morse code and were able to communicate by making sounds on the sides of the vessel.

There are many explanations for what the words stand for: Save Our Souls; Save Our Ship; Send Our Succor ... The meaning of all three is the same — it is a plea for help by someone in distress. That’s exactly what SOS is.

SOS is a coded signal for help that continues to be used by ships, planes and stranded (束手无策的) people around the world even more than 160 years after it was invented by the American Samuel Morse. The Morse code, as it came to be called, is used to send messages by telegraph or wireless.

SOS is the easiest code to transmit and recognize. The code consists of three dots, three dashes and three dots. One can tap it on the telegraph or signal it with a torch or even a flag.

Before the invention of the code, long-distance communication consisted of lamp signals from hilltops, smoke signals and shouted messages. In 1787, M Lammond, a Frenchman invented the first electric line that could send messages over a distance by means of electricity. Morse developed the first successful telegraph instrument in 1837.

Called a transmitter, it converts a message into electric signals. In 1838, Morse also developed a code that consisted of dots and dashes representing letters and numbers. These symbols were easy to send over the telegraph line. The dots and dashes would travel through the wire and were picked up by a receiving set.

The electric signals would move a metal point to print the dots and dashes on a paper tape. The code can be used to read these dots and dashes and translate the message.

Because of its simplicity, the Morse code continues to be used even as mobile wireless telephones are replacing telegraph transmission.

59. People trapped in a ship could use the following ways EXCEPT ________ to ask for help.

A. sending out radio signals

B. making sound signals

C. making smoke signals

D. sending out light signals

60. What does the word “it” refer to in Paragraph 6?

A. The telegraphic line.

B. The Morse code.

C. The electric signal.

D. The telegraph instrument.

61. What is the passage mainly about?

A. What SOS means and how it was invented.

B. The inventor of the first electric line — M Lammond.

C. The nuclear submarine that sank in the Baltic Sea.

D. The great contribution of Morse made to the telegraph instrument.

There are several parts of the world where people live longer than in other parts. Many of the things people do in those places probably sound familiar. People there are active throughout their lives. They eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, but little meat. They don’t get fat. They put a premium (非同寻常的价值) on family, friends and religion to give them emotional support. And, as other researchers have reported, people who drink a glass or two of red wine a day tend to live longer than non-drinkers. Along the way, one researcher says he has also found some surprises. It appears, for instance, that high altitudes are good for people. Thinner air actually lowers one’s blood pressure, and more exposure to the sun means more vitamin D. People who eat nuts seem to live two or three years more than average —although, as the researcher said, “is that because the nuts are good for you, or because you’re not eating potato chips?”

There are probably many factors people cannot control; people’s genes clearly play a significant role in their long lifespans (寿命), but the researcher is nonetheless (尽管如此)trying to communicate his findings to schoolchildren, in the belief that healthy lifestyles, adopted early, give benefits for a long time.

With the help from the University of Minnesota, the National Geographic Society and the Allianz life-insurance company, he has developed a computer program that estimates, based on lifestyle and behavior, how long a person is likely to live, and suggests how they can improve their odds. Anyone who is interested in this can check out the so-called “Vitality Compass”.

“People who just concentrate on diet and exercise are missing three-quarters of the picture,”he said. “There’s a whole a la carte menu (分类菜单) that will help you live longer and better.”

67. According to the passage, the researcher thinks that ___.

A. a person whose parents have had long lives can’t die at an early age

B. good lifestyles can help people increase their lifespans

C. exercising every day is the best way to live longer

D. eating green food is the only way to keep healthy

68. What is the function of the computer program created by the researcher?

A. To find out whether a person is healthy.

B. To find out the gene of a person.

C. To analyze a person’s character.

D. To predict a person’s lifespan.

69. The author wrote the passage in order to tell us that ___.

A. it is hard to control one’s lifestyle

B. it is easy to make oneself live longer

C. it is possible to increase one’s lifes pan

D. one can discover how long one will live

70. From the last paragraph we learn that ______.

A. there are lots of factors that can affect one’s lifespan

B. a person who pays attention to diet and exercise is sure to have a long life

C. food has the de cisive influence on one’s lifespan

D. a person’s lifespan can be controlled orderly

SONY Corporation announced the development of a small biped (两足的) entertainment robot “SDR-4X”that can adapt its performance to its environment and situations found in the house. The company hopes to further develop the possibility for a biped-walking robot. Richer communication with people can be realized by using a variety of sensor systems, performance control software based on memory and learning, and a flexible biped-walking mechanism.

While improving the output performance of the small machine that drives each joint, a newly developed “Real-time Integrated Ada ptive Control System” controls a total of 38 joints in the robot’s body in real time, based on information from various sensors g athered in real time. More advanced movements are realized by enabling biped walk on the irregular surface plus posture retention (保持力) control under external (外部的) pressure. In addition, stable and flexible walk can be achieved by the real time production of walking patterns such as pace and rotation (旋转) angle in accordance with various situations. Using two CCD color cameras for image recognition, the SDR-4X can find the distance between itself and an object by using two cameras. These cameras allow the robot to range between itself and the object to automatically produce a route in order to make its way around the object.

Besides, the SDR-4X can recognize an individual by observing the front facial image captured by a color camera. The robot can also observe the direction of a sound source and recognizes an individual speaking by using 7 microphones located inside its head. By using wireless LAN communication functions, the robot can synchronize(同时发生) data processing with an externally connected PC, which enables continuous speech recognition in many different languages.

Information on people and the location of an object obtained through image recognition technology is used as short and long term memory information. Based on this information, the SDR-4X can realize more complicated communication and movements. By inputting music and lyric data into the robot, it can sing and the composition of emotional, dynamic singing through voice synthesis can be realized to improve the robot’s entertainment quality.

71. Besides the ability to move freely, the “SDR-4X” also can ______.

A. communicate with human beings

B. race like human beings

C. distinguish different colors

D. take people’s pictures

72. According to the second paragraph, we can know that _______.

A. the “SDR-4X” is rather expensive

B. the “SDR-4X” can walk faster than human beings

C. the technologies used for the “SDR-4X” are more advanced than before

D. the “SDR-4X” can act the same way as a human being

73. How does the “SDR-4X” recognize different people?

A. By controlling a total of 38 joints in its body.

B. By using two CCD color cameras for image recognition.

C. By using wireless LAN communication functions.

D. By recognizing a person’s facial image or speaking voice.

74. What should humans do first in order to make the robot sing a song?

A. Develop a Real-time Integrated Adaptive Control System.

B. Use wireless LAN communication functions.

C. Enter information about music and lyric data into the robot.

D. Install an image recognition technology into the robot.

75. Where does the passage probably come from?

A. A newspaper.

B. A guidebook.

C. A detective fiction.

D. A storybook.

When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
