They advised building more old people’s service stations in the ne ighborhood. They also gave suggestions about how governments, neighborhoods and hospitals can work together to make this happen. An old people’s service station is different from a nursing home. It offers things like daytime care, cooking, cleaning and friendship to old people who live in their own homes. The students surveyed more than 1,100 people, about 90 percent of them said they would prefer using the stations’ services to moving into a nursing home. However, there are not enough of these stations, and many are not run very well. The six students came up with a solution after reading more than 60 surveys, interviewing 108 people and visiting 25 different organizations. If you’ve ever felt a big earthquake or seen one on television, you know that it has the power to shake the ground and move large buildings. When a great earthquake happens under the ocean floor, the earthquake’s large energy is transferred (转移) to the water above it, creating a series of water waves called a tsunami (海啸). The word comes from the Japanese words tsu (harbor)and nami (wave).Normal ocean waves have an average wavelength (波长)of about 100 meters and an average height of about 2 meters, while a tsunami can have a wavelength of 193 kilometers or more. Travelling at up to about 800 kilometers per hour in the deep ocean, a tsunami might be at a height of as little as 0. 9 meters, which makes it almost impossible to be noticed, even for a ship in the area.As a tsunami approaches (靠近)a coastline, things begin to change greatly. As it approaches shallow(浅的)waters, the wave speed drops below about 80 kilometers per hour. The wavelength also decreases much, but amplitude—the height of the wave from the lowest to the highest point—increases greatly, leading to the huge wall of water along coastlines, which causes great damage to coastal areas.About 80% of tsunamis happen in the Pacific Ocean. Tsunamis cannot be prevented, but areas that experience tsunamis regularly have developed tsunami warning systems to give as much advance warning as possible to people who live along the coastline. For example, there are tsunami warning signs and warning sirens (警报器)atop nearby hills along Japanese coastlines. And many coastal communities there have built tsunami walls, floodgates and others to stop or change the direction of water from incoming tsunamis.36. What do we know about the tsunami in paragraph 1?A.The word tsunami comes from the Chinese words.B.It happens before the earthquake under the ocean floor.C.It is a series of water waves on the ocean.D.The tsunami is the same as the earthquake.37. According to the passage, tsunamis are hard to find mainly because of _________.A.their low sound B.their fast speedC.their low height D.their short wavelength38. What does the underlined word “decreases” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A.changes B.reduces C.develops D.produces39. The last paragraph is mainly about _________.A.how to study tsunamis B.where tsunamis always happenC.what tsunami warning systems include D.how to reduce damages caused bytsunamis40. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.An earthquake is sure to cause a tsunami.B.The greater amplitude causes the huge water wall.C.About 80 percent of tsunamis happen in Japan.D.Tsunamis can be stopped by warning systems.Where did you go yesterday? Did you hear music at any of those places? There is a good chance that you did. Today most stores and restaurants play music. You might even hear music in 41 office or on a farm.Scientists believe that music influences the way people behave 42 (deep). According to some scientists, the sound of western classical music 43 (make)people feel richer. When a restaurant plays classical music, people spend more money 44 food and drinks. However, when the restaurant plays modern music, people spend less money. With no background music, people spend even less.It 45 (believe)that loud, fast music makes people eat faster. People actually chew their food 46 (fast)when the music gets faster. Some restaurants play fast music during 47 (they)busy hours. This gets people to eat faster and leave quickly. In this way, restaurants can make more money. Some scientists think that music makes you think and learn better. They say that music helps 48 (student)to be more energetic. It is true that people learn better when they feel 49 (relax). And listening to music can help you relax.Next time you hear music somewhere, be careful, because it may 50 (change)the way you behave.E-waste is fast becoming a serious problem around the world. This report will examine this problem and provide some possible ways to solve it.51 It is often cheaper to buy new products than to repair old ones. Also, through clever advertising, companies always encourage people to change their old TVs, mobile phones and computers for the latest models. E-waste is created when we throw away old ones. In the EU alone, about 8,700,000 tons of e-waste is produced each year. Sadly, just over 1,000,000 tons is recycled.Burying e-waste or burning it cause serious problems for the environment. 52 These things can then get into the ground or pollute the air when they are burnt.53 However, their plans are not always managed properly. Sometimes electronics are just sent to poor countries such as Ghana and Nigeria. Here they are often burnt in public areas, which is very bad for people’s health. Setting up recycling centers is a good way to solve this problem. E-cycling centers could recycle the parts that can be reused and deal with the rest properly.54 This means that producers must take back old products. They should then make sure old products are properly recycled or reused. As for us, we should try to cut down on e-waste. 55 And don’t buy a product just to have the latest model.E-waste is a serious problem in the modern world. Both producers and users must take actions and try to keep it to the smallest amount.61. 在你的学校生活、家庭生活、社会活动及兴趣爱好等方面,一定有让你引以为豪的事情。

Mom encouraged. For the next few minutes, Pepper opened each of her Christmas presents. While she did, she reminded us of the joy of being together. Our family felt as a whole—not because we were in the same room or city, but because our love brought us together.Pepper passed away after Christmas. Her peaceful passing made us tearful. Her passing was also a celebration of life, because she gave my family so much love and laughter.I still treasure (珍惜) Pepper’s final Christmas gift. She taught me that no matter where we each spend the holidays, the smallest act of sincere giving can unite our family through our love. For me, that knowledge is the longest-lasting gift of all.1. You Who Came From The Star and The Heirs(继承者们) have been subjects of hot online discussions throughout Asia. The two TV programs have several common elements(元素): a tall, handsome, and rich hero who loves a woman and always protects her, and an equally handsome man madly in love with the same woman. Both programs represent the purity of love.Perhaps that’s the secret of their success; perhaps people still love Cinderella-type(灰姑娘型的) stories. However, Chinese TV screens are full of poorly made soap operas(肥皂剧).Most of the Chinese TV dramas either describe the War against Japanese or blindly copy foreign programs. There are too many TV series on time travel or fights in the palace of Qing Dynasty (清朝1644-1911).These, in short, do harm to Chinese TV productions.Hopefully, the success of South Korean TV programs will encourage Chinese TV drama makers to think of new ideas and give up their bad practice of copying foreign productions in order to attract more viewers at home, and possibly abroad.1. So does the way you dance to certain kinds of music. These findings come from two different research projects. They used surveys to find out what kinds of personalities people had. Then researchers looked at either how personality types matched with people’s favorite kinds of music or how people danced.Dr. Adrian North and his team from a Scotland university had the personality study that also looked at peo ple’s taste in music. They surveyed over 36,000 people from six different countries. Dr. North and his team first asked people questions to find out if they were outgoing, creative, hard-working or confident among many other personality types. He also asked them to rate how much they like different kinds of music. It turns out that people who like the same kind of music seem to have similar personalities. And this is true even if the people are from different countries. For example, people who like jazz are usually confident and creative but are often not outgoing. People who like rock music are not hard-working and not confident, but they are creative. People who like country are hard-working but not outgoing. These findings didn’t match everyone exactly, but in general, people’s personality types and taste in music matched surprisingly well.Dr. Geoffrey Luck from a Finland university studied the connection between personality and how people danced. Like Dr. North, Dr. Luck also used a survey to determine(判定)the personality types of 900 people. Then he asked 60 people with strong personality types to dance to different kinds of music. While they danced, Dr. Luck recorded them on video. He then used a computer program to analyze the way people moved their bodies.Dr. Luck found outgoing people move around a lot while dancing. Hard-working people tend to move around a lot as well, but they also use their hands more. People with easy-going personalities tend to dance from side to side and move arou nd more smoothly. Shy or nervous people don’t move smoothly and they move from one foot to another. The next time you dance, watch the people around you and ask them what kind of music they like, you can learn a lot about them.21. What did Dr. Northstudy?A .Music preferenceandpersonality.B .Old and young people’s taste in music.C .The music ofsixcountries.D .Surveys of music lovers from past research. 22.According to Dr. North’s research, what is usually TRUE of people who like rock music?
