How to Hold a Cat?
Zhang Siqi #15
Since my childhood, I have kept 4 cats successively and all four of them were warm and fluffy. And of course each of them left me some scars and vaccines to deal with. But my intimacy with my pets in those days determined that holding a cat is definitely not an idea that scares me. Instead, I find it soothing and cozy to cuddle cats and dogs. According to the result of my survey, however, 7 out of 13 people in this room are not fans of cats, mostly because you are afraid of getting scratches as a souvenir. So today I’m here to introduce you to scratch-free methods of holding different kinds of cats - regular cats, kittens and fat cats respectively.
To start with, to cuddle a cat, well, you need to have a cat. The main preventive measure of holding cats is to avoid strange cats, especially when the health state of those is unsettling. Just a heads-up - once you unfortunately get scratched, rinse the wound with water, iodine or alcohol for disinfection, and seek for timely injection of rabies vaccine. If symptoms such as fever and swollen lymph nodes appear, make sure you go to hospital for treatment. World Health Organization states that there are tens of thousands of people dying of rabies or other cat-related diseases every year, so if I were
you I would not take this lightly. 【Also, keep it in mind that with some proper
caution, infection is avoidable. All you need to do is follow three steps: Close up, fetch and prop.】
First of all,get near the cat. Notice that we’d better get close up to the cat from not the front but the rear or one side. Straight coming closer face to face can easily let the cat identify you as aggressive. Then one hand goes for the head. This is not only preparing for the next holding move, but also, head is one of the few body parts on cats that are suitable for petting. All the cats love being petted as long as you know just the right trick—patience. Take your time to know the likes and dislikes of your cats and take your time petting them in a
way they appreciate. Meanwhile, the other hand gently goes for the bottom of your cat.
Now, if your target is a cat of regular size, the normal way to hold it is to sneak one of your hands to its armpit and grab its forelegs to raise them up. And then it is when the other lurking hand comes in and props the thighs on it. Unless the cat feels a little bit under the weather, now you already have one cat huddling in your arms.
If it is a kitten that you’re about to cuddle, directly reaching out to its armpits may injure its chest and abdomen. The movement we need to imitate is the one that a mommy cat does to kittens when she carries kittens along with her. She holds kittens’ neck in her mouth and travel s around. Since kittens don’t weigh much, injuries to kittens are needless to be concerned about. Then make use of your other hand as before, support the kitten by its bottom. Please pay extra attention to its tail and make sure you’re not pinning it.
If you are interested in faaaaat cats, so fat that you need panorama to take a picture of them, neither armpits nor neck is the appropriate part to start with. Technically, due to the grease, fat cats have more slippery armpits than regular ones and the fur of their neck is apparently not enough to pull up their weight. Now we’ve got to grab the armpits first like what we d id to regular cats. Swirl the cat to a horizontal position. And cuddle it like a machine gun.
Close up, fetch and prop. See? These are all pretty easy, aren’t they? Cats are animals with feelings, so please don’t hurt them. As long as cats feel safe and comfortable, whatever kind of cats they are, regular cats, kittens or fat cats, they are all tame and not aggressive. So next time when you try to hold a cat, now you know just the right way to do it. Close up, fetch and prop. Hold it right and hold it gently.
