Imagine, the virus has the power to make military systems, giant banks, airports, hospitals and traffic system come to stop! What does a computer virus do? It targets electronic objects that are programmed. The virus spreads through connections between these electronic objects. For virus spreading experts, e-mail is a favorite method of sending their destructive (破坏性的) weapon. But scientists warn that this is not the worst that can happen. There is more. People are also connected through phones. The next virus may actually target mobile phones, especially those that are programmed to do many tasks apart from just communicating. It would then be easy for a virus to infect those programs and create major disorder. For example, these virus may have the power to record your phone conversations and make others hear them. They create problems with your electronic money accounts, or they could create a mountain of telephone bills for calls you never made. And that would be a disaster. A report on this was publishedin the New Scientist recently. One way out would be to have simpler phones with not so many different functions. This would mean there would mean there would be fewer programs for the virus to attack. But mobile phone producers arein a fix. People on longer want an electronic item to perform just one task. They want more and morefunctions added. That would mean more software programs to make the mobile phone perform all those functions. And that means the possibility of more viruses. 36 It can be inferred from the passage that ______. A. computer viruses are not so as destructive as mobile phone viruses B. people should be careful when receiving e-mails C. people find it difficult to use electronic equipment correctly D. having electronic money accounts brings people a lot of convenience 37. Which of the following shows that your mobile phone is infected with a virus? A. You can’t hear the person who answers the phone clearly B. You can’t send e-mails with your mobile phone C. your phone bill increases for unknown reasons D. You can hear other people’s phone conversations 38. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean? A. Mobile phone producers have made no progress. B. Mobile phone producers are proud of their products. C. Mobile phone producers are faced with a difficult situation. D. Mobile phone producers refused to fight against virus. 39. For whom is the passage written?A. Government officialsB. Virus spreading expertsC. Electronic scientistsD. Mobile phone users B When I worked as a waitress in Chicago, US, my coworkers and I would sigh whenever we heard someone with a foreign accent coming into our restaurant. We knew what it meant to serve a non-American: no tip. We would work just as hard as we always did, but we might not get paid. Americans have an unspoken rule about tipping: they give tips to almost everyone who offers them a service of some kind. Americans tip their waiters, barbers and taxi drivers. An appropriate tip is between 15 and 20 percent of the amount charged for the service (But the charge for the tip doesn’t appear on the bill. The customer is expected to add it himself/herself.) Tipping less than this sends a message to your waiters that you think they’ve done a bad job serving you. And to leave no tip at allis simply unacceptable. It’s not that American waiters are greedy. In many countries, waiters are paid a salary for their work. They’ll earn money even if no one comes into the restaurant. This system offers much more safety for waiters than the American version. In the US, waiters know that a night without customers means a night without pay. Some countries include a tip for waiters a “service charge” on the bill itself. Since the tip is included with the other charges, waiters don’t need to worry about people forgetting to tip. But in the US, waiters do not receive a salary, and service charges only appear on bills when there are six or more customers at the table. Since almost all American customers are familiar with the system, they know to add a tip without being told. But visitors to the US may expect waiters to be paid a salary, or think that the tip is included on the bill. So much as we waiters loved hearing stories about other places from our foreign customers, we were always nervous when they got ready to leave the restaurant. We were never sure what to expect. If you order $200 worth of food, which of the following is a proper total payment?A. $200B. $215C. $220D. $230 41. Why don’t some foreigners tip a waiter according to the writer?. A. because they are unfamiliar with the American tip system. B. because they are too mean to give tips to any waiter. C. because they have difficulty communicating with waiters. D. because they are not really easy to become satisfied. 42. What can we learn from the passage? A. The service charge never appear on the bill in the USA. B. Customers are usually expected to tip waiters in the USA. C. Dining out in other countries is much more expensive than in the USA. D. Waiters in other countries earn much more money than those in the USA. 43. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To complain about the difficult life of American waiters. B. To warn other waiters not to serve any foreign customer. C. To call on foreign customers to leave tips for American waiters. D. To tell us something about American waiters’ salary system. C London, Dec.17 (Xinhua) “Drivers on London Underground trains have started reading out sayings from great thinkers like Mahatma Gandhi , Frindrich Engels, and Albert Einstein in a bid to cheer up passengers ,” officials said. D My sisters and I have dreamt of a home in the city, but when the Alcott family found itself in a small house at the South End without a tree in sight, only a back yard to play in, and no money to buy any of the beautiful things before us, we children all opposed it and longed for the country again. Anna soon found little pupils, and walked away each morning to her daily task, pausing at the corner to wave her hand to me in answer to my greet with the duster(抹布). My father went to his office downtown, mother to her helping the poor, the little girls to school, and I, Lousia, was left to keephouse, feeling like an aged sea-gull as I washed dishes and cooked in the basement kitchen where the only thing I could hope for was someone talking with me. Good drill, but very hard, and my only comfort was the evening reunion where all met with such various reports of the day’s adventures, we could not fail to find both amusement and instruction. Father brought interesting and attractive news from the upper world; mother, usually in low spirits because she would give away her clothes with sad tales of suffering from the darker side of life; gentle Anna gave a modest account of her success as a teacher, for even at seventeen her sweet nature won all who knew her, and her patience gained her the support of the most naughty pupil. My reports were usually a mixture of sadness and happiness, and the children poured their small joys and troubles into the family where comfort and mercy were always to be found. We know from this passage that the Alcott family was __________. a happy and united family an extremely poor family a family with lots of serious problems a family that remained in the country Anna was a successful teacher because_________. she had a strong sense of duty B. she was obviously intelligent she knew her subjects well D. she had wonderful character Lousia’s daily responsibility was_____. to help the poor B. to run the house to go downtown D. to feed the seagulls According to the passage, what Lousia enjoyed most is _________. the evening reunion B. moving to the city joining Anna at her school D. telling others her stories 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

What is it? The answer, according to a recent study, is money. We’ve understood that happiness and money go together. However, how much happiness does money bring? How might money bring happiness? To answer these questions, Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and two colleagues asked people how much money they make, how they spent their money and how happy they were. In their sample of 632 Americans, the researchers found that an average of nearly 1% of the monthly budget was spent on what Dunn terms “prosocial spending” that is, gifts for others and donations to charity. Overall spending levels were not related to happiness, but prosocial spending was. A further study was also done among 46 college students. The researchers gave these students an envelope with $5 or $20, and told them to either spend money on themselves or on friends. At the end of the day, students who had given away their money were happier than students who spent it on themselves. The amount of money they received and spent had no effect on their happiness. “We’re not talking about Bill Gates donating millions of dollars to charity; we’re talking about relatively modest amounts of money,” says Dunn. “Everyone could stand to give away a little more than they do.” The sad irony about money, Dunn notes, is that when people come to view it as a route to happiness, they are less likely to give it away. “I think it’s exciting news and a fascinating study,” says Robert Biswas, another psychologist who was not involved in the research. He points out, however, that Dunn’s study design didn’t show how much more money people need to spend to feel happy most. “Does this work for poor people as well as for rich people?” he asks. 56. In the first paragraph, why does the author mention a riddle? A. To stress the importance of money in people’s life. B. To inspire the readers’ interest in the passage. C. To show happiness is more important than money. D. To prove how eagerly people want to be rich. 57. According to passage, it is suggested that prosocial spending ____.A. is a society-friendly actB. is popular with AmericansC. isn’t related to happinessD. needs a big income 58. In Dunn’s opinion, it’s possible and reasonable for average people to ____. A. feel happy by donating some money B. become as rich as Bill Gates C. realize happiness through making money D. view money as an only route to happiness 59. According to the passage, Robert Biswas questions ____. A. the importance of money B. the existence of happiness C. the friendship between the rich and the poor D. the study’s adaptation to different people B No one knows when the first calendar was developed. But it seems possible that it was based on lunar months. When people started farming, the wise men of the tribes became very important, they studied the sky and gathered enough information to be able to predict when the seasons would change, and were able to announce when it was time to plant crops. The divisions of time we use today were developed in ancient Babylonia 4,000 years ago. Babylonian astronomers believed the sun moved around the Earth every 365 days. They divided the trip into 12 equal parts, each with 30 days. Then they divided each day into 24 equal parts, or hours, and divided each hour into 60 minutes, each minute into 60 seconds. Humans have used many devices to measure time; the sundial (日晷) was one of the earliest and simplest. However, the sundial worked well only when the weather was fine, so other ways of measuring the passing of time were invented. One device was the hourglass(沙漏). By the eighteenth century, people had developed mechanical clocks and watches. So we have devices to mark the passing of time, but what timeis it now? Clocks in different parts of the world do not show the same time at the same time, because time on Earth is set by the sun's positions in the sky above us. As international communications and travel grew, it became clear that a way to establish a common time for all parts of the world was needed. In 1884, an international conference divided the world into 24 time zones, each zone represents one hour. The astronomical observatory in Greenwich, England, was chosen as the starting point for the time zones. Twelve zones are west of Greenwich. Twelve are east. The time at Greenwich measured by the sun is considered by astronomers to be Universal Time, also known as Greenwich Mean Time. 60. What does the example of Babylonia astronomers reveal? A It reveals Babylonians’ wisdo that was absent elsewhere. B It reveals the origin of our time measurements. C It reveals the limits of some time measurements. D It reveals the of time measurements.61. The author mentions all of the following ways to measure time EXCEPT _____. A sundial B hourglass C electric clock D mechanical clock62. According to the passage, Greenwich Mean Time _____. A provides a common time for all parts of the world B is calculated from the sun C is the 12th of the 24 time zones D was named after an international conference6. With which of the following statements would the author be most likely to agree? A Time measurements have changed in response to need and technological development. B In ancient Babylonia, 12 was the basic division of time. C The first calendar was developed because the wise men of tribes were intelligent. D Universal Time is so named because it throughout the universe. C Grandma Moses is among the most famous twentieth-century painters of the United States, yet she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said of herself:” I would neversit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could have had a more productive old age. She was born Anna Mary Robertson on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At twelve she left home and was in domestic service until, at twentyeven, she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmekd most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927. Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery(刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands had become too stiff to sew and she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore(杂货店) and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought everything she painted . Three of the pictures exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930’s and her death she produced some 2,000 pictures: detailed and lively portrayals(描绘) of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. “I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it.” she said. 64. According to the passage, Grandma Moses began to paint because she wanted to _____ .A. make herself beautifulB. keep activeC. earn more moneyD. become famous 65. From Grandma Moses’ description of herself in the first paragraph, it can be inferred that she was ______ .A. independentB. prettyC. richD. nervous 66. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Grandma Moses: Her Life and Pictures.B. The Children of Grandma Moses.C. Grandma Moses: Her Best Exhibition.D. Grandma Moses and Other Older D People living on parts of the south coast of England face a serious problem. In 1993, the owners of a large hotel and of several houses discovered, to their horror, that their gardens had disappeared overnight. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliffs on which they had been built. While experts were studying the problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff into the sea. Erosion(侵蚀)of the white cliffs along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be abandoned as the sea has crept farther and farther inland. Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be swallowed up by the hungry sea. Angry owners have called on the Government to build sea defenses to protect their homes. Government surveyors have pointed out that, in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents go farther along the coast, shifting the problem form one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say, until the waves reach an inland area of hard rock which will not be eaten like limestone is. Meanwhile, if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain future, apply to a house agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England, You can get a house for a knockdown price but it may turn out to be a knockdown home. What is the cause of the problem that people living on parts of the south coast of England face? the rising sea level Experts’ lack of knowledge. The washing-away of limestone cliffs. The disappearance of hotels, houses and gardens. 68. The erosion of the white cliffs in the south of England ____. A. will soon become a problem for people living in central England B. has now become a threat to local residents C. can be stopped if proper measures are taken D. is quickly changing the map of England It is not possible to build sea defenses to protect against erosion because ____. AAlong with more than 300 other seniors, I marched into the stadium on the afternoon of May 10. The audience burst into deafening cheers, whistling and clapping. It was as if a Hollywood superstar had walked on stage. And indeed, every single senior that day was a star of the once-in-a-lifetime moment—the commencement.Seated, I waited anxiously for the opening address. As a foreign exchange student, I was not able to receive a diploma. However, I still had the wonderful feeling of being part of things. Like the other graduates, I was dressed in marron cap and gown(方帽长袍).Our principal, Mr. Glover, delivered a short, warm greeting. The US national anthemfollowed and then, hands on chests, a solemn Pledge of Allegiance(对美国的忠孝宣誓).Students who had excelled academically gave farewell speeches. Then came the core (核心) of the commencement. Hundreds of names were announced. Each graduate walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma from the principal. From the different cheers each graduate got, we had the funny sense that it was a kind of competition of who could cheer the loudest. To be honest, the presentation of diplomas got boring. But it wasn’t boring for th ose receiving the diploma: they would treasure the moment the principal placed the sacred brown document in their hands for the rest of their lives.A new page in the book of that person’s life had turned. They were glimpsing theirfutures: futures of challenge, hardship, perhaps loneliness too, which would take all of their courage.56. What’s the article mainly about?A. An American high school’s graduation ceremony.B. The opening ceremony of a sports meeting.C. A presentation of college diplomas.D. A US college’s farewell party.57. Which of the following statements about the author is FALSE?A. She was one of the graduates.B. She was a foreign exchange student.C. She was excited to receive her diploma.D. She felt it great to be at the ceremony.58. The right order of the following events is________.a. Diplomas were presented to graduates.b. Students gave farewell speeches.c. The US national anthem was played.2d. The principal gave a short, warm speech.e. Seniors went into the stadium.A. b-c-a-d-eB. c-d-b-e-aC. d-b-e-a-cD. e-d-c-b-a59. From the text, we can conclude that_______.A. a diploma ensures a good jobB. a diploma guarantees a bright futureC. the commencement symbolizes the beginning of a new stage in lifeD. everyone felt excited at the presentation of the diplomaBAnthony was sad. He was, as he put it, “not very bright” and couldn’t win t he attention of his very wealthy parents, who preferred his “clever” older brother. At age 8, Anthony was sent away to a boarding school in his native England, even though he screamed and pleaded with(恳求)his parents year after year not to send him. “The th ought was it would be good for me,” he recalled. It was not. Anthony did badly in his studies, had few friends and was bullied for five years. “My teachers couldn’t have had a lower opinion of me,” he said. “I wasn’t even smart enough to rebel. The one thing I remember from the very earliest age was the desire to write. When I was 10 years old, I remember asking my parents to get me a typewriter for my birthday because I wanted to be a writer.”Now, at 55, Anthony is one of the world’s most successful children’s book authors. His Alex Rider series has sold more than 5 million copies, and the eighth book featuring the young spy, Crocodile Tears, has come out.The Alex Rider books tell the adventures of 14-year-old Alex Rider, an agent for the British intelligence agency M16.Anthony says he doesn’t try to write for kids; it just comes out that way.“I have a feeling that it has something to do with purity and simplicity. I give as little information as isnecessary to describe the room, the character in the ro om, and get on with the action,” he said. The style has also made Anthony a successful writer of television shows for adults in Britain because, he says, writing books for kids is a lot like writing television for grown-ups: In both cases, it’s all about e ntertaining people with a good story. Now, Anthony couldn’t be happier with his life. Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical care, especially if they lack health insurance. Or they may stay because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alcohol consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may also fear what they might learn about their health, or they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But playing doctor can also be a deadly game.Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Internet for medical answers. Most of them aren't nearly skeptical enough of what they find. A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They shouldn't. Look up “headache”, and the chances of finding reliable and complete information, free from a motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brown Medical School study. Of the l69 websites the researchers rated, only l6 scored as “high quality”. Recen t studies found faulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet. The problem is that most people don't know the safe way to surf the Web. “They use a search engine like Google, get l8 trillion choices and start clicking. But that's risky, because almost anybody can put up a site that looks authoritative(权威的), so it's hard to know whether what you're reading is reasonable or not, ”says Dr. Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.64.
