Generalizations
We often make generalizations to describe characteristics of a group of people or things, rather than stating facts about them. When we make generalizations, we frequently use a number of different expressions to sound less direct or forceful, as well as to suggest that we’re aware of the risks of over-generalization, and are open to other people’s ideas.
Choose the statements are valid generalizations about homes in China.

Valid or faulty generalizations
Now rewrite the faulty generalizations so that they are valid.
3 It’s absolutely impossible to get a 100 per cent load to buy a home. The general rule is a minimum down payment of 20-30 per cent of the cost. There are also limits to the amount you can borrow depending on what you are buying and how much you have saved in a Housing Fund Bank account. 6 The older housing stock is in most cases inferior. 7 Prices continue to rise.
Remember: Valid generalizations are based on facts, logic, examples, and faulty generalizations are not supported by facts, or are too general. We can often identify faulty generalizations by words such as everyone, everything , all, no one , none, always , or never .

Making generalizations about home
Answer the questions about homes in China. Make generalizations.
1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of renting or buying accommodation? Property prices are rising so it is usually a good thing to buy a flat if you can afford to. If you don’t have enough money and don’t mind moving a lot, rented housing is a better choice. 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of old and new homes? Old homes can look attractive, but they tend to lack modern facilities. New homes can be expensive and not everyone likes high-rise living, but the materials are better and there are usually fewer maintenance problems. More

Generalizations
Some of the expressions we use to make generalizations:
1. to begin a sentence As a general rule, many young people in England hope … to buy their own home … Generally speaking, older houses are preferable to new ones … But in general, a family only does so on the arrival of the younger generation. Broadly speaking, there are two reasons for this. In most cases, these are houses on two floors with a garden.

Making generalizations about home
Answer the questions about homes in China. Make generalizations.
3 What are the advantages and disadvantages of elderly people living with the rest of the family? Typically it is economically sensible for an old person to live with younger relatives. Elderly people can help with the housework and are good with children, and the young can take care of the elderly parents as well. But as Chinese homes are generally not very large, living so close together may often result in disagreements. 4 What is “council housing” like? Broadly speaking, council housing is high-rise. The apartments are small, but affordable.

Sample
With China’s large population and the growth of its cities in recent years, housing is in great demand and there has been a huge building boom. Broadly speaking, the older housing stock has been demolished as it was not of a good quality and needed to be replaced by high-rise buildings which can accommodate more people. A high percentage of urban residents own their own flat. This is typically the case with a married couple with a child.
