Mending wall

And spills the upper boulders in the sun; And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
And set the wall between us once again. We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each. And some are loaves and some so nearly balls We have to use a spell to make them balance: 'Stay where you are until our backs are turned!„ We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall, That wants it down.” I could say “Elves”to him, But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather He said it for himself. I see him there Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
Imply his neighbor is a old –fashioned, conservative man.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me, Not of woods only and the shade of trees. He will not go behind his father's saying,
Thanks for your attention!
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, ―Good fences make good neighbors.‖
The speaker fails to convince his neighbor.
The wall is a sign of civilization which can keep the savage out. But the wall may be a barrier between the people. It makes the people miss the chance to communicate with each other. In this aspect, the wall is unnecessary. Something there is that doesn't love a wall, which will break the wall. Because this wall is against people‟s satisfaction, even again the nature. So the power tendency will destroy it sooner or later.
Oh, just another kind of outdoor game, One on a side. It comes to little more: There where it is we do not need the wall: He is all pine and I am apple orchard. My apple trees will never get across And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him. He The only says, “Good fences good apple trees are personified, asmake the speaker neighbors.” claims that they will never wander across and eat

But at spring mending-time we find them there.

I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;

The poet shows great concern for nature, human society and spirit, which is a synecdoche of the relationships between man and nature, man and society, man and self; which is futher an alarm for human beings in ecological dilemma. Frost is mending a wall, what’s more, he is mending the gaps in modern man’s psyche.

Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder If I could put a notion in his head: Isn't it Where there are cows? But here there are no cows. Before I built a wall I'd ask to know What I was walling in or walling out, And to whom I was like to give offense.

The work of hunters is another thing:猎人的行为则是另一番景象:I have come after them and made repair我要紧随其后修补不停的忙,Where they have left not one stone on a stone, But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,而是把兔子赶出让它们难躲藏,To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,惹得猎狗叫汪汪。

Appreciation of Frost’s Poetry
(from Mountain Interval )
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both. And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
(from North of Boston)
Something there is that doesn't love a wall That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it, And spills the upper boulders in the sun; And makes gaps even two can pass abreast. The work of hunters is another thing: 绅士们行猎时又是另一番糟蹋: I have come after them and made repair Where they have left not one stone on a stone, But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls We have to use a spell to make them balance: 需要一点魔术才能把它们放稳当: "Stay where you are until our backs are turned!“ “老实呆在那里,等我们转过身再落下!” We wear our fingers rough with handling them. 我们搬弄石头.把手指都磨粗了。 Oh, just another kind of out-door game, 啊!这不过又是一种户外游戏, One on a side. It comes to little more: 一个人站在一边。此外没有多少用处: There where it is we do not need the wall: 在墙那地方,我们根本不需要墙: He is all pine and I am apple orchard. 他那边全是松树,我这边是苹果园。

While living in England with his family, Frost was
exceptionally homesick for the farm in New Hampshire where he had lived with his wife from 1900 to 1909. Despite the eventual failure of the farm, Frost associated his time in New Hampshire with a peaceful, rural sensibility that he instilled in the majority of his subsequent poems. “Mending Wall” is autobiographical on an even more specific level: a French-Canadian named Napoleon Guay had been Frost’s neighbor in New Hampshire, and the two had often walked along their property line and repaired the wall that separated their land.
