第一部分必修五Module 5Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2019·江西八校高三联考) There is a very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander, the great Greek king. Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized how his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence. So, he lay helplessly waiting to breathe his last. He called his generals and said, “I will depart from this world soon, I have three wishes, please carry them out without fail.”“My first desire is that,”said Alexander, “My physicians alone must carry my coffin.”After a pause, he continued, “Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn(撒满) with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected.” The king continued, “My third and last wish is that both my hands be kept hanging out of my coffin.” Alexander's favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart. “Oh King, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?”At this Alexander took a deep breath and said, “I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any body. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let people not take life for granted. The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell people that not even a bit of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is just a waste of time to chase wealth. And about my third wish of having my hands hanging out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty-handed into this world and empty-handed I go out of this world.” With these words, the king closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last.语篇解读:本文主要通过亚历山大去世前的三大愿望告诉读者:珍惜生活,财富生不带来,死不带去。

阅读限时练Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·湖北七市联考)Ever feel like scratching yourself when you see others doing it? You’re probably not alone. This practice, which seems to be socially contagious(传染的), could be more than just a sudden urge. This is according to the latest finding from Washington University. The researchers studied mice to see what went on in their brains when they saw other mice scratching. During the experiments, a mouse was placed in front of a computer screen to watch another of its kind scratching. A few moments after watching the video, the live mouse would start scratching. The finding is interesting because earlier studies had shown that mice only show empathy(共鸣) with individuals they know and the mouse on the screen was a stranger for the live mouse. This means that empathy may have nothing to do with the need to scratch. When the researchers analyzed the brain activity of the mice after viewing the video, they recorded increased level of gastrinreleasing peptide(GRP). In the previous research, GRP is found to be responsible for transferring the itch(痒) feeling between the brain and the skin. However, when researchers blocked the GRP’s function, the mice simply stopped scratching in response to seeing other mice scratching. This means that mice have no control over their scratching when seeing peers(同伴) scratching. The mouse doesn’t see another mouse scratching and then thinks it might need to scratch. Instead, its brain begins sending out itch signals using GRP as a messenger. It’s not clear if the exact same pathway exists in humans. But the team believes the study could help throw light on the neural mechanisms(神经机制) behind contagious behaviors in human beings. The next time you scratch in response to someone else doing it, remember it’s really not a choice, nor a psychological response; it’s hardwired into your brain.【解题导语】本文是一篇实验报告。

When I was thirty one, I was in aserious car accident. The doctor told me that they would try to get meto walk “normally”but I would never run again—terrible news forsomeone who views running as the oxygen she breathes. The doctorswere right. For the next nine and a half years, I was unable to run morethan twentyfive feet.In 2006,I began selftraining to take part in a 60mile walk. Three months into preparing, I realized that walking 4-5 hours a day was too long. If only I could jog part of it—that would cost me less time. I started jogging without my knees aching. Slowly, I increased the distance. The doctors were proved wrong—it only took nine and a half years to do so.While practicing, I suffered a loss—a dear friend suddenly died. His work had been to help women to accept themselves and reach their fullest potential. He believed that people should let nothing hold them back from achieving their goals. Soon after his death, a crazy thought entered my mind:what if I could run the LA Marathon?I knew that if I didn’t train to my fullest, the doctors would win. So I trained seven days a week. And I succeeded in crossing the finish lines of many marathons all over the United States to the astonishment of my doctors. They never believed I would achieve that. The aches and pains I experience while training and racing are nothing compared to the suffering people whom I respect must accept.【解题导语】作者酷爱长跑,一场事故几乎使她丧失了跑步的能力,在朋友的鼓励下,经过自己的努力,作者又出现在长跑的运动场上。
