AI recently visited a friend in the hospice(晚期病人收容所) unit at one of our local hospitals. As I was talking with Bill, a gentleman walked into the room. The gentleman leaned over the bed to embrace Bill crying and so did Bill. Later I knew that they hadn't spoken in over 25 years for an argument over a piece of property(财产).I left the hospice unit thinking, there's something wrong when we can't forgive. Life is short and it's difficult to make up for all the time that has been lost. This experience caused me to consider the power of forgiveness and the need for it in our lives. Sure when someone says something or does something to cause us harm, it hurts. But we need to move beyond the hurt, to healing, which comes from forgiveness.I'd like to think of forgiveness as the brave choice we make to clearour lives resentment, bitterness, anger, hatred and revenge. We need to ask ourselves, “Do I want to waste precious time and energy carrying around these nasty feelings?”Often forgiveness is not for the other person; it is for us — to let it go and begin again.Forgiveness brings healing,_freedom, and peace back into our lives. It opens our eyes to see what happened. It calls on us to pull down the walls, stop the silent treatment and put an end to the cold war. Use today as an opportunity to open the cold door that has been closed too long. Forgive. Let it go. Put it behind you and see how much better you will feel.Give it a try. It works. Don't make it too late.1.The two men cried when they embraced in the hospital because __________.A.the gentleman at last found BillB.they were moved by their storyC.Bill was badly ill and they regretted the cold war between themD.there is something wrong with them2.What does the writer want to tell us?A.A story that happened in the hospital.B.A friend of his named Bill.C.The need of forgiveness.D.His own feeling about the two men.3.Which of the words best explain the underlined word “healing”?A.Anger. B.Disappointment.C.Hatred. D.Health.4.When you forgive the person who hurt you, __________.A.you can cure the hurt, and feel comfortableB.you can get rid of the terrible feeling, such as anger, hatred and bitternessC.You can get healing, freedom and peace backD.The first three answers are all right答案与解析:1.解析:细节理解题。

Most people need seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Less than that can interfere with mental (智力的)and physical (身体的)abilities. However; a study recently done by researchers shows that sleep disorders are not recognized enough by the general public and the medical community. The study examined why we need sleep, the effects of sleep loss and other sleep disorders. The final report says that too few researchers are studying sleep disorders; too few health care workers are trained to identify and treat the problem. Every year; American businesses lose more than one thousand million dollars because of tired workers. Some empbyees are too tired to report for work. They have accidents or are less productive at work. Other costs include increased visits to doctors. The study found that twenty percent of injuries caused by serious car accidents are linked to sleepy drivers. Other studies have linked poor sleep to an increased risk of health problems like severe sleeplessness, heart disease, depression and unhealthy amounts of body fat. For teens, sleep shortage affects their ability to pay attention in class. Research shows that 20% of high school students fall asleep in class, and have poorer grades because of lack of sleep. Researchers involved in the study are suggesting a number of steps to help prevent sleep disorders including a campaign to inform the public about the problem, increased education and training among health care workers. 单元质量检测(三)(时间:100分钟满分:120分)Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
ALocated in the center of Netherlands,Utrecht is the capital city of the smallest province in the country. It's essentially a smaller and friendlier version of Amsterdam, with canals, shops and street cafes.Walk through history“Watch out for the bikes,”said our guide on the morning's walking tour.Utrecht bikes are old, and they weave among pedestrians with skill, sometimes seeming to miss you only by a hair. The high point of the walk is the 14th-century Dom Tower, standing at 367ft. Its presence ensures that you can never get lost in the city.Utrecht's main canal, the Oudegracht, is very pretty. It is lined with wharfs (码头), which have been turned into businesses, restaurants and so on.The Dom TowerYou can see Amsterdam if you climb the 456 steps of the Dom Tower. And if your legs give_out before the top, at least try to reach the astonishing bell tower. The bells, which are centuries old, are so big that they can only be rung once a year to prevent the tower from being damaged.A different set of bells provide the daily ding-dongs.A woman plays these bells like a piano once a week. The museum under the tower, Dom Under, shows the Roman foundation of the city, which dates back to 47 AD.It is a brilliant exhibition, making you feel like an archaeological (考古学的) dig.Eating and shoppingThe best place to eat is the atmospheric Graaf Floris. It's an old-fashioned coffee shop where the menu is simple but hearty.Shopping in Utrecht is fun. There are familiar clothing chains, such as Mango and Zara, but the real pleasure lies in the unusual little boutiques (精品店) selling curious art, board games and antiques. The hotelsI wasn't very impressed with the post-modern Court Hotel situated in the former Utrecht Courthouse — although its location is perfect and the bar is nice. But the Mother Goose Hotel with its industrial cutting-edge interiors (室内设计) is highly recommended.1.What may make you feel like walking through history?A.Utrecht bikes.B.The Dom Tower.C.The Oudegracht.D.The Wharfs.2.The underlined part “give out” probably means“________”.A.get hurt B.build upC.get tired D.break out3.Where might the author live if he visits Utrecht?A.Mother Goose Hotel.B.Court Hotel.C.Graaf Floris.D.Utrecht Courthouse.BKatrina Walker, 28 years old, likes to paint and read.Walker might also have Huntington's disease, a disease that her mom has, giving her a 50 percent chance of having the Huntington's gene.Walker could take a test to find out if she has the gene, but she hasn't yet.Walker admits sometimes the possibility of having Huntington's disease makes her anxious and sad, but for the most part, she doesn't think about it, and doesn't want to know if she has it. “If I have it, there's nothing I or anyone else can do at this point,”Walker said.“There is no cure for it or anything right now that even controls the disease well.Knowing isn't going to prevent me from having it.”Knowing that her life expectancy may be cut by 20 to 30 years is bound to cause some urgency. But getting tested can affect how someone lives their life. That was the conclusion of a study, which showed that individuals at risk of Huntington's disease who didn't get tested lived as if they didn't have the disease, and those who tested positive were more likely to get divorced, retire, report major financial changes and change their recreational (娱乐的) activities. For Walker, she's optimistic about her chances. If she has Huntington's disease, she's not worried about passing it on, since she doesn't plan on having kids. The time of her diagnosis won't affect how the disease progresses.Although she admits she would feel more pressure to live her life to the fullest if she were tested positive for Huntington's disease, she's currently living her life as if she won't die in the next couple of decades by this disease.“Right now, I feel like my future is wide open and if I got tested and found out I have Huntington's disease.I'd feel like, well, there's my future and there's my fate,”Walker said.“Right now I have more time and freedom.”4.Walker might have Huntington's disease because ________.A.she likes to paint and readB.her mother has the diseaseC.she refuses to take a testD.she often feels anxious and sad5.It can be learned from the passage that ________.A.knowing earlier about the disease will help to cure itB.there is no cure for the disease at presentC.there is no way to test if one has the diseaseD.the disease has no effect on one's life expectancy6.Which of the following may be the reason for Walker not taking a test of the disease?A.She didn't want to affect her later life.B.She was afraid of being cut 20 to 30 years.C.She didn't want to get divorced with her husband.D.She can't afford the money to take the test.7.What can be the best title for the passage?A.Health ignorance may be goodB.Huntington's disease, no cure, no testC.How to prevent Huntington's diseaseD.Never take a test of Huntington's diseaseCDogs are called man's best friends, and owners who don't play with their dogs find their pets suffer behavior problems such as anxiety and aggression, according to a survey.Dogs show symptoms such as “complaining and jumping up, as well as pulling on the lead and not coming when called”, the study of 4,000 dog owners said. And scientists are beginning to agree that play is the key to a dog's happiness. The research, carried out by Emily Blackwell of Bristol University, showed just one in five owners played with their dogs six times a day, while half played twice or three times a day with their pets and 10 percent played just once. The study found that there was “a growing acceptance” that the “frequency of play for dogs is a really good indicator of their quality of li fe”. There is a clear association in the results. Owners report more potential behavior problems in dogs that play less. The survey, which will be broadcast on the Channel 4 program Dogs: TheirSecretLi v es, also shows that a dog's favorite game is “fetch”, according to 43 percent of owners. Governor Jerry Brown announced last week that Californians must reduce their water use by 25 percent because of lack of rainfall and snow. This is California's fourth year of below-average rainfall since 2012. The lack of rain and snow has created extreme drought conditions across the state. Some of the state's water comes from northern California. It moves through waterways to the farm-rich Central Valley and water-hungry cities in the south. Farms use 80 percent of the state's water to produce much of the nation's fruit, vegetables and nuts.In general, farmers are not required to follow the new water restrictions. But many growers have already faced cuts to the amount of water they can take from public water supplies. They now pump groundwater for crops, and eventually will face more limitations on using it.The expert of California thinks the public wants even stronger measures to control water use.Our recent survey asked the question, “Do you think the local and state government is doing enough about the drought?” And we saw the majority say, “No.”Some of the new measures are already in place. Restaurants will face fines if they offer water to people who have not asked for it. Gilberto Cetina owns a restaurant in Los Angeles. He says the restrictions will save more than just drinking water.“When you are giving the water or, if you use glasses, you should use water to wash the glasses,”Cetina says.Experts say there is no single solution to the state's water shortage. But they say education, better planning and stronger measures can help the state deal with its present drought.12.What's the main reason for the drought in California?A.The hot weather.B.The overuse of water.C.The lack of rainfall and snow.D.The lack of waterways.13.The underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 re fers to ________.A.the state's waterB.the water restrictionC.the state of CaliforniaD.the drought condition14.Farmers are not required to follow the water restrictions probably because ________.A.they used to use too much water on their farmsB.their crops can't grow well without waterC.they have already cut down the use of waterD.there is enough groundwater in California15.According to Gilberto Cetina, the measure taken in restaurants will ________.A.help restaurants save water as well as moneyB.make the restaurants lose many customersC.force the restaurants owners to pay more finesD.have an obvious effect on saving waterⅡ.任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

BWalking down the narrow streets of the Kumartuli neighborhood, one is sure to come across sculptors working hard in small, sometimes shabby, workshops.Kumartuli is in Kolkata, India.Once known as Calcutta, the city is the capital of West Bengal, a state in eastern India. It is also home to a community of more than 400 artisans who are continuing one of India's ancient traditions. The word Kumar means “to sculpt”, and tuli means “place”. The potters (陶工) of Kumartuli spend the entire year sculpting models of Hindu gods for various religious festivals. The techniques used to create these idols (神像) have been passed down from generation to generation and are fiercelyprotected family secrets. Bytradition, the craft was taught to brothers and sons. Today, some women are sculptors, too.The best time to visit Kumartuli is between March and late August. That is when artisans are sculpting idols of Durga, a Hindu goddess, and her children for Durga Puja, a major Hindu festival celebrated for 10 days each year, typically in late September.“Each complete figure takes almost three months to make,” explains potter Naresh Chandra Pal.“The seniormost sculptor in the family then performs Chokkhu Daan, which means gifting eyesight.”A potter paints the idol's eyes, which, according to popular belief, symbolizes breathing life into it.Most idols are more than 10 feet tall.“Idolmaking forms a large part of India's slowlydying artistic and cultural heritage (遗产),” says Haru Pal, a Kumartuli artisan.“This makes the tradition even more important.”Despite their talents, most of these artisans remain largely unknown in India. Families live in crowded apartments by their workshops.“The younger generation is unwilling to make idolmaking their profession,” says Ramesh Pal.“We are neither appreciated enough nor given a proper income.”The government has promised to build modern housing and repair the workshops in Kumartuli. A community art studio is also planned.“However,” Ramesh says,“the government has yet to carry out these promises.”语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。
