ALoulan, an ancient city in the Lop Nur, was first “discovered” by Swedish explorer Sven Hedin in 1900. The finding of Loulan brought about new and unexpected fame for the ancient history of the Central Asia and thus began the exploration of the Taklamakan Desert. The City of Loulan is known both in China and throughout the world as the Middle Kingdom's “Pompeii” in the desert and one of the cradles of the civilization. It wasn't hard to imagine how excited Sven Hedin must have been when he was awarded the Victoria Medal by the Royal Geography Association. From that point forward, the mysterious covering of Loulan was gradually lowered and was no more a silent unknown hero but became an immediate worldwide sensation(引起轰动的事). Adventurers from America, Britain, Japan and Sweden, including Huntington, Stein, Otani Kozui and Bergman set foot here for several times. In the 1930s, Chinese archaeologist Huang Wenbi came here for the first time and made a survey of this area, which was found even then in terrible conditions due to uncontrolled digging with many wonderful cultural historic relics takenaway to distant foreign lands. In 1979, a group of tombs called Sun Tombs, known for their unique and attractive burial forms, were unearthed in the Gumugou Graveyard, the public graveyard of the Lop Nur citizens in the Bronze Age. In early 1980s, in the Tiebanhe River Delta area of the lower reaches of the Peafowl River in Lop Nur, a female mummy dating back some 3,800 years was unearthed and was considered by the Japanese as the “Loulan Beauty”. This set off a wave of current exploration of theSilk Road. The archaeological unearthing being currently conducted in the Xiaohe(Small River) Graveyard is now the focus of the world's most important academic event. The Xiaohe Graveyard, 175km west of the City of Loulan, is located in the lower reaches of the Peafowl River in the Lop Nur. When the Graveyard was found, it is said that there were some 1,000 coffins. It is large in scale with sand dunes(沙丘) as high as eight metres, on which about 140 wooden stakes(树桩) in various shapes were closely arranged. These burial customs are, to say the least, unusual...with the unearthed relicsdated back to China's most ancient days.21.Which of following statements shows the correct position of the City of Loulan?A.It lies in the Tiebanhe River Delta.B.It lies in the lower reaches of the Peafowl River.C.It lies south of the Gumugou Graveyard.D.It lies 175 km east of the Xiaohe Graveyard.22.Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the word “Pompeii”?A.A city as world famous as the Middle Kingdom's “Pompeii”.B.A buried city in the desert of great historical value.C.A buried city to be unearthed like the Italian city “Pompeii”.D.A city visited by many archaeologists all over the world like “Pompeii”.23.From the passage, it can be inferred that ________.A.it was a Chinese archaeologist that first discovered the City of Loulan B.it is of the greatest importance and value to be unearthing the Xiaohe Graveyard C.foreign adventurers did much damage to the exploration and relics of the City of Loulan D.one after another important discovery about Loulan was made, causing worldwide sensationBYou put a great deal of effort into reaching the college of your choice. It's time to get started. But what's next? Beginning college can be an exciting but awkward time. Follow these tips to adjust to your new life rapidly and make the most of your college experience.●To save time and money, use the college's bus system. Taking the bus to school is quick, easy and free in most college towns. You won't have to locate or afford a place to park, either. It's also a goodway to be environmentally aware.●Save pennies on books by waiting until class starts. You might not even need all of the recommended books. New textbooks cost an arm and a leg. Try buying used textbooks—it's a sure fair way to save money and serves the purpose as well.●Do never look at college life as an endless series of parties and social activities. But there is a whole lot more to college if you're serious about graduating. Having a good college experience is allabout balancing work and fun.●Be aware that your living environment can largely affect your academic success. If the dorm doesn't suit you, consider living at home with your family or renting your own apartment. The best location for your studies isn't always your dorm. Find a quiet area, like the library, to do your work.Alternatively, buy some headphones that block out noise.●Be mindful of your diet. Make healthy food choices and watch what you eat. Avoid foods that are processed or high in sugar. The “freshman 15”is real. Many college students gain at least 15pounds during their freshmen year.●While electives(选修课) can be helpful when figuring out your major, you shouldn't entirely rely on them. Clubs and other organizations exist around. Get involved. Make sure, though, that you still have time to study. Having_too_much_on_your_plate can hurt your grades.24.Which of the following ideas can be financially wise?A.Driving your own car.B.Buying used books.C.Renting an apartment.D.Attending activities.25.In the text, freshmen are repeatedly warned against ________.A.academic failures B.physical problemsC.traffic accidents D.social activities26.The “freshman 15”tells the fact that some freshmen ________.A.attend limited activities on campusB.have little regular physical exerciseC.focus less on their academic workD.take relaxed attitudes to their diets27.The underlined phrase “Having too much on your plate”probably refers to ________.A.using too much money for mealsB.eating too many unhealthy foodsC.taking part in too many afterclass activitiesD.taking an elective that has too many studentsCA huge cloud of dust rose and an overpass disappeared. This was the scene in Zhuzhou, HunanProvince on May 17.Nine people were killed and 16 injured.Things were similar last year in the Sichuan earthquake. Thousands of people were buried in the ruins and lost their lives. What if we could have warned them?People are always racking_their_brains to find a way of preventing buildings' collapse. Better materials and technology help, but they are not a solution.Just like humans, a building has its own life cycle from “birth” to “death”. If we know when a building is going to collapse, we can repair it in advance or get out of it before it falls. Now, scientists at the University of Illinois have developed a material that turns red before it breaks. The invention could be used in things like climbing ropes or bridge supports. The research was led by Nancy Sottos, a professor at the university's Beckman Institute, andDouglas Davis, a graduate research assistant. The secret behind the colorchanging material is a type of molecule (分子). A molecule is a group of atoms held together by chemical bonds. Imagine you and your friends standing in a circle, holding hands. Each person stands for one atom, your hands represent the bonds, and the entire circle represents a molecule. If one person lets go of his or her hands, the molecule changes color. The research team put the molecule into a soft material. When the researchers stretched the material, it turned bright red for a few seconds before it broke into two pieces. When they repeatedly stretched and relaxed the material, without breaking it, it only turned a little red.The major problem is that light can get rid of the red color. When the team shone bright light on the molecule, the broken bond was fixed, and the color disappeared. If the bright light keeps the red color from appearing, the material's warning system will be useless. Scientists still have a lot of work to do before the color-changing molecules can be used outside thelab.28.What does the passage mainly introduce?A. The collapse of an overpass in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province.B. The Sichuan earthquake.C. A material that turns red before it breaks.D. A way of preventing building from collapsing.29.The underlined words “racking their brains”in the third paragraph mean ________.A. suffering a lotB. collecting beyond imaginationC. losing a lotD. thinking very hard30.Which of the following is a WRONG statement?A. Thousands of people died from the collapse of buildings in the Sichuan earthquake because theyhadn't been warned.B. There is no building that will never collapse.C. A new material has been applied to buildings to warn people of collapse.D. A color-changing material can turn red before it breaks.31.What can we infer from the passage?A. The color-changing molecules are certain to be used outside the lab.B. There will be no collapse with the help of the color-changing material.C. There is a long way to go before the material can be applied.D. The problem caused by bright light will be solved by scientists.DMonitoring the mood of a pet dog could be used as an early warning sign that an elderly owner isstruggling to cope, a new report has claimed.Researchers placed movement sensors(探测器) on dogs to track their behaviour and identified 17 distinct activities, including chewing, barking, sitting and digging. This allowed them to map the normal behaviour of a healthy, happy dog, which means any changes can be monitored and couldindicate an issue with their owner.Nils Hammerla, part of the team from Newcastle University, said, “Humans and dogs have lived together in close relationships for thousands of years, which has led to strong emotional and socialmutual bonds.”“A dog's physical and emotional dependence on their owner means that their well-being is likely to reflect that of their owner. Any changes such as the dog being walked less often, perhaps not being fed regularly, or simply demonstrating “unhappy” behaviour could be an early indicator for families that an older relative needs help. This is the first system of its kind which allows us to remotelymonitor a dog's behaviour i n its natural setting.”The team of academics, who presented their findings at the 2013 UbiComp conference in Zurich, created a hitech, waterproof(防水的) dog collar for the study.Dr Cas Ladha, who led the study, said:“A lot of our research is focused on developing intelligent systems that can help older people to live independently for longer. But developing a system that reassures family and carers that an older relative is well without intruding on (侵犯) the individual's privacy is difficult. This is just the first step but the idea behind this research is that it would allow us to support peop le without the need for cameras.”A range of dogs was used for the study, as the team needed to map distinct behaviours that correlatedbetween different breeds.32.From the text, we know that Nils Hammerla________.A.led the study and identified 17 activities of dogsB.thinks some activities of dogs can reflect senior owners' healthC.studied the relationship between humans and animalsD.developed a hitech, waterproof dog collar33.The underlined word “reassures”in Paragraph 7 probably means________.A.protect B.comfortC.warn D.recognize34.Which of the following is an advantage of the intelligent system mentioned in the text?A.It can indicate that people aren't well.B.It can identify different activities of dogs.C.It monitors an elderly owner without disturbing his privacy.D.It lets people see the dog's behavior clearly.35.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?A.Dogs' mood can be an indicator of owners' healthB.Strong bonds between dogs and their senior ownersC.Signs that your older relative needs helpD.A special way of taking care of the old第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Liz PayneBThe freezing Northeast hasn‟t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter, so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota, Florida, my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”. I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C(维生素C), thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air, I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness. Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets(at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon) filled the weekend, but the best part- particularly to my taste, dulled by months of cold- weather root vegetables- was a 7 a.m. adventure to the Sarasota farmers‟ market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call. The market, which was founded in 1979, sets up its tents every Saturday from 7:00 am to 1 p.m, rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets. Baskets of perfect red strawberries, the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck; and most of all, the tomatoes: amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.Disappointed by many a broken, vine-ripened(蔓上成熟的) promise, I‟ve refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they‟re unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in, with uncertainty, on one particular table at the Brown‟s Grove Farm‟s stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal- and at that moment, I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn‟t be experiencing again for months.Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight, my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown‟s Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty, a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where- luckily for me- I was planning to have dinner that very night. Without even seeing the menu, I knew I‟d be ordering every tomato on it.24. What did the author think of her winter life in New York?A. Exciting.B. Boring.C. Relaxing.D. Annoying.25. What made the author‟s getting up late early worthwhile?A. Having a swim.B. Breathing in fresh air.C. Walking in the morning sun.D. Visiting a local farmer‟s market.26. What can we learn about tomatoes sold in New York in winter?A. They are soft.B. They look nice.C. They taste great.D. They are juicy.27. What was the author going to that evening?A. Go to a farm.B. Check into a hotel.C. Eat in a restaurant.D. Buy fresh vegatables.CSalvador Dali (1904-1989) was one of the most popular of modern artists. The Pompidou Centre in Paris is showing its respect and admiration for the artist and his powerful personality with an exhibition bringing together over 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings and more. Among the works and masterworks on exhibition the visitor will find the best pieces, most importantly The Persistence of Memory. There is also L’Enigme sans Fin from 1938, works on paper, objects, and projects for stage and screen and selected parts from television programmes reflecting the artist‟s showman qualities. The visitor will enter the World of Dali through an egg and is met with the beginning, the world of birth. The exhibition follows a path of time and subject with the visitor exiting through the brain. The exhibition shows how Dali draws the viewer between two infinities (无限). “From the infinity small to the infinity large, contraction and expansion coming in and out of focus: amazing Flemish accuracy and the showy Baroque of old painting that he used in his museum-theatre in Figueras,” explains the Pompidou Centre. The fine selection of the major works was done in close collaboration (合作)with the Museo Nacional Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain, and with contributions from other institutions like theSalvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg.28. Which of the following best describe Dali according to Paragraph 1?A. Optimistic.B. ProductiveC. Generous.D. Traditional.29. What is Dali‟s The Persistence of Memory considered to be?A. By popularity.B. By importance.C. By size and shape.D. By time and subject.31. What does the word “contributions” in the last paragraph refer to?A. Artworks.B. Projects.C. Donations.D. This evening, as on every Thursday night, psychologist Maud Lehanne is leading two of France‟s favorite pastimes, coffee drinking and the “talking cure”. Here they are learning to get in touch with their true feelings. It isn‟t always easy. They customers-some thirty Parisians who pay just under $2 (plus drinks) per session-care quick to intellectualize (高谈阔论),slow to open up and connect. “You are forbidden to say …one feels,‟ or …people think‟,”Lehane told them. “Say …I think,‟…Think me‟.”A café society where no intellectualizing is allowed? It couldn‟t seem more un-French. But Lehanne‟s psychology caféis about more than knowing oneself: It‟s trying to help the city‟s troubled neighborhood cafes. Over the years, Parisian cafes have fallen victim to changes in the French lifestyle-longer working hours, a fast food boom and a younger generation‟s desire to spend more time at home. They showed video recording of taekwondo matches to 42 experienced referees. One fighter wore blue and the other wore red. They then showed them the same recordings but digitally manipulated the clothing to exchange the colors. 73 “If one competitor is strong and the other is weak, it won’t change the outcome of the fight,” said Norbert Hagemann, who led the study. “74 ”In 2004 scientists at Durham University also looked at how color influenced sporting competitiveness. Practically everything humans know, think, value, feel, and do is learned through taking part in a sociocultural system. 72 Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of Midnapore in India, the director of a children’s home was told by local villagers that there were “ghost”in the forest. Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and the other about six years old, appeared to have been living a pack of wolves in the forest. 73 In his diary, the director describes his first view of Kamala (as the older child was named) and Amala ( the name given to the younger child):Kamala was a terrible-looking being, the head, a big ball of something covering the shoulders. 74 Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple if minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. “Buy Super Clean Toothpaste.”“Drink Good Wet Root Beer.”“Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of “You Need It! Buy It Now!”The beginning if the rude is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you’ve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed: new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it’s fun to try to figure if out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right, the left or the hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down.Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you’ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops. The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there’s a kind of expectation and excitement. The seat of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you’ve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the armrests even with your hands behind your head. The end comes just at no more ways to sit.辽宁测试题Building Your Business, Building Your PeopleWhat an exciting thing to do—developing a successful business! AMy color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit.I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day late, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I hadto pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.1. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?A. He got an older model than he had expected.B. He couldn’t return it when it was broken.C. He could have bought it at a lower price.D. He failed to find any movie shows on it.2.Which of the following can best re place the phrase”signed off”in Paragraph 1?A. ended all their programsB. provided fewer channelsC. changed to commercialsD. showed all-night movies3. How did the author finally get his TV set working again?A. By shaking and hitting it.B. By turning it on and off.C. By switching channels.D. By having it repaired.4. How does the another sound when telling the story ?A. CuriousB. AnxiousC. CautiousD.HumorousBYour house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious (难为情)when they’re in poorly lit places-and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough w indow light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.Don’t forget the clock-or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里)per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes, And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishes, Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one ,total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 perc ent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.5. The text is especially helpful for those who care about_______.A. their home comfortsB. their body shapeC. house buyingD. healthy diets6. A home environment in blue can help people_________.A. digest food betterB. reduce food intakeC. burn more caloriesD. regain their appetites7. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?A. Eat quickly.B. Play fast music.C. Use smaller spoons.D. Turn down the lights.8. What can be a suitable title for the test?A. Is Your House Making You Fat?B. Ways of Serving DinnerC. Effects of Self-ConsciousnessD. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?CMore student than ever before are taking a gap-year (间隔年)before going to university. It used to be called the “year off” between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated (起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year. This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher educationinstitutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by University and College Admissions Service(UCAS).That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible,” he said. But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students(NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student had ship – young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to £15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree.NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacation periods,”he said.9. What do we learn about the gap year from the text?A. It is flexible in length.B. It is a time for relaxation.C. It is increasingly popular.D. It is required by universities.10. 2.

AOne afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son's school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my 11-year-old had stomach pains, retching (干呕) into a bowl. Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before. What caused so much pain? Sports day. Sports day might be necessary at a highly competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day causes no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is a nightmare (噩梦). Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents,it can prove a disaster. Why do we put our children through this annual suffering? Some may say competition is character building;or it's taking part, not winning, that's important;or that it is a tradition of school life. I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting—and were fun to watch. More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone's eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less competitive event. Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.21.What can we learn about the author's son from Paragraph 1?A.He talked with some mothers. B.He comforted his classmates.C.He had difficulty in sleeping. D.He suffered from stomachache.22.Sports day is still an annual event in this school probably because __________.A.this is an independent school B.it is a tradition of the schoolC.it helps children lose weight D.children enjoy watching sports23.What does the author think about team games?A.They should include more stressful races.B.They are acceptable to different children.C.They should be abandoned at primary schools.D.They are less fun for those who love running.24.What is the author's attitude towards sports day?A.Critical. B.Neutral.C.Positive. D.Ambiguous.BMOOCs, short f or “massive open online courses,” mark an important, possibly revolutionary, development in education. These courses are on line, free of charge, and open to anyone in the world who has a laptop and an Internet connection. Moreover, they are mainly offered by great universities like Stanford, Berkeley, Harvard and Columbia. The courses are arranged according to how difficult they are, enabling students to progress from beginners to the advanced. The courses cover not only a broad range of science subjects such as math and computer science, but also courses in social sciences and humanities. Though MOOCs are not offered for credit and degree, many students enroll(加入) in the courses for real skills or knowledge which they can put to some practical use.The format(形式) seems better than the traditional school class. The average quality of the lecturers is much higher. Besides, students can learn back and forward—that is, they can go at their own learning speed, which they can't do in a live lecture. And, more importantly, they don't have to travel anywhere to attend an online lecture. There is a problem of asking questions of the lecturer in a class of ten thousand students, but some MOOCs have solved it by allowing students to post questions on line for a vote, and only the most popular questions are put to the lecturer. In a knowledge age, lifelong learning is not confined to a traditional classroom. Students taking MOOCS are usually very clever, have work experience, and in many cases, have already developed a set of practical skills. Moreover, they also offer unique international perspectives(远景) that would be the envy of any school classroom.25.Which of the following statements is NOT true about MOOCs?A.The word “MOOCs” is short for “massive open online campuses”.B.Anyone who has a computer and an Internet connection can take MOOCs.C.MOOCs are usually offered by first-class universities in the world.D.MOOCs may be a breakthrough in the development of education.26.MOOCs seem to have an advantage over traditional school classes in that ________.A.there is a problem of asking questions in traditional classesB.students enrolling in MOOCs can get credit and degree easilyC.students can learn at their own study paceD.students can travel to many places when taking MOOCs27.The meaning of the underlined word “confined” means ________.A.extended B.developedC.limited D.advancedCPassenger pigeons (旅鸽)once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks (群)so large that they darkened the sky for hours. It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.Sadly the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were most abundant, people believed there was an everlasting supply and killed them by the thousands. Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans' need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again. In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on September 1, 1914.28. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons________.A. were the biggest bird in the worldB. lived mainly in the south of AmericaC. did great harm to the natural environmentD. were the largest bird population in the US29. The underlined word “undoing” probably refers to the pigeons'________.A. escapeB. ruinC. liberationD. evolution30. What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons?A. To seek pleasure.B. To save other birds.C. To make money.D. To protect crops.31. What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan?A. It was ignored by the public.B. It was declared too late.C. It was unfair.D. It was strict.DWhen different species of birds flock(聚集) together, their flight formations are determined by social dynamics both between and within species.New research from the Universities of Cambridge and Exeter reveals for the first time that, contrary to current models used to explain the movement of flocks, the differences between bird species and social relationships between individuals play a critical role in determining the dynamics of mixed-species flocks. The unified(群集) behaviour of bird flocks has puzzled scientists for hundreds of years. One naturalist from the turn of the century even suggested telepathy(心灵感应) may be involved. There have since been more logical explanations, including mathematical models that show that repeated interactions among individuals following simple rules can generate coordinated(协同的) group movements. However, these models usually rely on the assumption that individuals within groups are identical and interact independently, which may not reflect reality.Jolle Jolles, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge's Department of Zoology and author of the paper, said:“Spectacular collective behaviour can be found in a large range of animal species, and we now know that often these complex coordinated group movements may be the result of individuals following simple rules. However, rarely are the individual characteristics and social relationships within them taken into account. Our research highlights that these striking displays of group behaviour are much more complex.”By analysing high-resolution photographs of mixed flocks of rooks and jackdaws(both from the corvid family), the researchers found that rather than individuals interacting in a consistent fashion throughout the flock, interactions depended on social dynamics between the different species as well as relationships within a species. The researchers discovered that birds prefer to fly close to members of their own species, and that the larger and more dominant rooks take the lead by flying near the front of flocks. Additionally, the lifelong, monogamous(一妻一夫制的) pair bonds that are characteristic of both species seem to be reflected in flight, as birds often fly particularly close to a single, same species partner.Dr Alex Thornton, principal investigator of the Cambridge Jackdaw Project, now at the University of Exeter and author of the paper, said “Together, our findings demonstrate that to understand the structure of groups, such as bird flocks,we need to consider the characteristics and relationships of the individuals within them.”32. The underlined word “generate” means ________.A.set down B.take awayC.bring about D.give up33.According to Jolle Jolles, what are seldom considered about coordinated group movement?A.Individual characteristics and social relationship between them.B.Repeated interactions among individuals and social dynamics.C.Telepathy and social relationship between them.D.The structure of groups and the varieties of species.34.Birds may prefer to fly the closest to ________.A.the largest one B.the most dynamic oneC.the lifelong partner D.the friendly partner35.What is the main idea of the passage?A.How birds interact in simple rules.B.How birds of different feathers flock together.C.Why birds show preference to flocking.D.Why birds display the characteristics.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

AMy color television has given me nothing but a headache.I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit.I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model,I realized this a day late, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid,The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night,Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it,I had to change to another channel and then change it back.Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise ,I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away.At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether .My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now,but I keep expecting more trouble.21.Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?A.He got an older model than he had expected.B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken.C.He could have bought it at a lower price.D.He failed to find any movie shows on it.22.Which of the following can best replace the phrase”signed off”in Paragraph 1?A.ended all their programsB.provided fewer channelsC.changed to commercialsD.showed all-night movies23.How did the author finally get his TV set working again?A.By shaking and hitting it.B.By turning it on and off.C.By switching channels.D.By having it repaired.24. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights . Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating , for people are often less self-conscious(难为情)when they’re in poorly lit places-and so more likely to eat lots of food . Warm colors like yellow make tood appear more appetizing , while cold colors make us feel less hungry . So when it’s time to repaint , go blue.Don’t forget the clock-or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes, And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down , turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishs, Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat.
