Much has been said and written about the declining numbers of and disappointing lack of diversity among American college students majoring in engineering. Among the factors cited to explain this phenomenon are the lack of exposure of high school students to the very idea of engineering and the fact that many have insufficient mathematics and science background to gain entrance to engineering school, even if they do identify the profession as a
possible career.
This is unfortunate, for the ideas of engineering should be integrated into the curricula not only of high schools but also of middle and primary schools. Our children are being done a disservice by not being exposed properly throughout their education to engineering
activities identified as such. After all, even pre-school children have the prerequisites in their play for appreciating exactly what engineering is: design. Indeed, design is everywhere around them throughout their school day, even in their before-school and after-school activities.
It needs only be pointed out to them that they are designing something, and therefore being engineers of sorts, in virtually everything that they do.

I classify (分类) them according to how well I know them and how well they know me.The first type of friend is just an acquaintance (熟人). This means that you only know their name. Y ou might not even remember what they look like if you go away for a short vacation. Y on don‘t miss them when they are elsewhere. It is also this type of friend who gives you the most amount of aggravation (恼怒). Since most of the time you are placed in a position where you have to act friendly. Y ou would not normally tell an acquaintance when he or she is doing something that makes you feel angry, such as tapping the fingers on a table or shouting loudly. I call them ―pest friends‖.The second kind of friend is a ―guest friend‖. They are just social partners. Y ou meet them at a certain location and at the end of the meeting you go your separate way and they go theirs. Y ou don‘t talk too often with this sort of friend, and you don‘t share each other‘s secrets. Lastly, we have ―best friends‖. This sort of friend is there when you need them. They know you as a person and they are there through thick and thin. Best friends are the ones that you can lean and depend on no matter what happens. If you need a listening ear, they will be the one to lend support.Friends come in all different shapes and sizes. Every friend has an impact on our life…1. What is this passage mainly about?A. They lead by example and never lose their smile. They change lives. Eileen Madden is one of them. Her students must think she was born with an eraser and a piece of chalk in her hand.―It‘s a joy to get up early every morning to be the first one here,‖ says the 55-year-old Holy Ghost School third grade teacher. Madden arrives shortly after 6 a. m. to prepare her classroom and work on the school breakfast program.―My family all went to St. Teresa‘s School,‖ she says. ―I always said, ‗One day, I‘m going to come back and get one of those big desks.‘‖With a watchful eye always on the lookout for ―one of those big desks‖, Madden returned to St. Teresa after graduating from college and taught second grade at the Olneyville neighborhood elementary school until it was burnt in a fire in 1990 and had to be closed. Madden then went to Holy Ghost School where she started as a second-grade teacher and then moved up one grade level.―I take care of setting up and serving breakfast,‖she says. ―In winter it is still dark when I arrive here.‖Madden praises Holy Ghost School Principal Carol Soltys and the school‘s workers for their continued support. ―It‘s a family,‖ she says. Her class is small this year with 15 students, including some from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Haiti, Guatemala, Nigeria and Ghana. The New Zealander seemed very puzzled at my answer. With a half smile, she asked, ―Really? Do they live in the same room?‖―Oh, no. They live in different rooms but in the same building.‖ I reacted quickly.Later I got to know the word ―dormitory‖. In AE it means one building while it means one room in British English (BE).The New Zealander misunderstood me because she spoke New Zealander English (NE), which, as we know, is much related to BE.Nowadays, not a few English learners, who try to catch up with the fashion, choose to speak AE.Y et, the problem is that they cannot speak pure AE, but half AE and half BE instead.I think it necessary to keep one style in order to avoid misunderstanding.1. Which of the following is RIGHT?A. AE and BE are two different languages.B. There are some differences between AE and BE.C. New Zealanders speak BE.D. New Zealanders cannot understand Americans.2. What I said to the New Zealander is _____.A. really pure AEB. really pure BEC. half AE and half BED. not English at all3. According to the passage, _____.A. few people speak AEB. more people speak BEC. BE is becoming fashionableD. AE is becoming fashionable4. The writer wrote the passage in order to _____.A. tell us a funny storyB. warn us not to make mistakesC. tell us the differences between AE and BED. encourage us to speak one style of EnglishBHow to say hello in Japanese depends on when you say it. This is very much like different greetings used in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture, it also depends on whether you are on the phone or meeting somebody or whether you are close to the person you are greeting. We don‘t get formal with our close friends. We seldom greet them with ―Good morning‖ or ―Good evening‖. A―Hi‖is enough.Although the most popular and most well-known translation for ―Hello‖is still ―Konnichiwa‖. it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese. Perhaps it is not the most suitable word for it. Actually, the correct greeting in English for ―Konnichiwa‖ is ―Good day‖ or ―Good noon‖. and I am sure you wouldn‘t like greeting people with a ―Good day‖ at any time, and neither do Japanese like saying ―Konnichiwa‖when they want to say ―Hello‖.So what to do? Let‘s do it the way the Japanese do. Use ―Ohaiyo Gozaimasu‖ for ―Good morning‖. ―Konnichi wa‖ when it‘s noon and ―Konbanwa‖ to greet somebody in the afternoon. Things differ when you are on the phone. Just say ―Moshi, Moshi‖, which is actually similar to saying ―Hello‖ over the phone, because one hardly ever uses ―Good morning‖ or ―Good afternoon‖ or ―Good evening‖ right after picking up the phone. It is invariably the sweet old ―Hello‖.Next time, I‘11 tell something about my life in Japan.5. What is the best title for this passage?A. How to say hello in JapaneseB. How to greet close friends in JapaneseC. How to greet people in JapaneseD. Some differences between English and Japanese6. Japanese people greet each other by saying ―_____‖ in the afternoon.A. Moshi, MoshiB. KonnichiwaC. Ohaiyo GozaimasuD. Konbanwa7. In the writer‘s opinion, _____.A. Japanese culture is similar to American cultureB. Japanese people don‘t like using ―Konnichiwa‖ as a greeting for the whole dayC. people don‘t need to be polite to their close friendsD. Japanese people are very friendly to each other8. What does the underlined word ―invariably‖ in the third paragraph mean?。

高三英语高中英语人教新课标版试题答案及解析

高三英语高中英语人教新课标版试题答案及解析1. The manager put forward a suggestion ____ we should have an assistant. There is too much work to do.A.whether B.thatC.which D.what【答案】B【解析】句意:经理提出一个建议,我们应该有个助手。

连接同位语从句的连词主要有that, if, whether,和疑问词(what how where when ...)。

The suggestion is that we should have an assistant.2. He made a promise anyone set him free he would make him very rich.A.that B.ifC.what D.that if【答案】D【解析】考查同位语从句和条件状语从句。
