高考英语二轮复习外刊阅读理解训练:老干妈等辣椒酱是怎样成为世界时尚美食的?

高考英语外刊阅读理解训练——老干妈等辣椒酱是怎样成为世界时尚美食的?——改编自World in a dishSome like it hot The rise of chilli crisp is a case study in how foods become fadsDuring lockdowns, some people found joy in cooking intricate meals that were previously impossible to make due to the rush of ordinary life. However, others found making three meals a day tedious, especially if they were cooking for small children. Enter condiments –a simple way to satisfy both groups. Condiments offered enthusiasts a chance to make dips and drizzles typically found at local delis and provided weary cooks with an easy way to add flavor to mundane meals, such as cheese toasties. Chilli crisp, a sauce made from garlic, shallots, fermented black beans, sesame seeds, and chili pepper oil, became increasingly popular during the pandemic because it satisfies humans' love of crispy and spicy foods. In China, chilli crisp has been a beloved condiment for centuries. The most famous brand is Lao Gan Ma, created by Tao Huabi in the southwestern province of Guizhou. Tao started selling noodles coated with the sauce in 1989 and now produces 13 million bottles of the condiment every day. During the pandemic, chilli crisp's popularity spread globally as people began cooking more at home and sharing theircreations on social media.Kevan Vetter of McCormick’s Flavour Forecast notes that tastemakers previously learned about new food trends by visiting restaurants and interviewing chefs, but during lockdowns, they turned to social media to see what home cooks and professional chefs were making. Along with banana bread, chilli crisp was one of the top trending foods during the pandemic, and its popularity has not waned.Despite its popularity, the question remains whether amateurs will continue making chilli crisp or turn to mass-produced alternatives. People rarely bother making ketchup because the commercial versions meet their taste preferences, so Tao Huabi might argue that her company's commercial option is just as authentic. With the growing East Asian population in America and Britain, and numerous new brands of chilli crisp emerging, it is likely to become a pantry staple, much like salsa once seemed exotic but is now commonly found in households.【重点词汇】1. lockdowns ['lɒkdaʊnz] n. 平凡的, 世俗的16. cheese [tʃiːz] n. 奶酪17. toasties ['təʊstis] n. 烤面包片,夹馅烤制而成的小饼干或小烤面包; adj. 烤得脆的18. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.Ive seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself (懒散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. “I dont know what to do with him these days,” she said. “Hes forgotten all the manners we taught him.”He hasnt forgotten them. He s just decided that he s not going to use them. She confessed (坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, “I dont like your dress; its ugly.” One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. 高考英语阅读强化训练附答案讲解
高考英语阅读强化训练附答案讲解Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have experienced an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help themkeep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock 家畜 to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Manycomputer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for pig producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In thefuture, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required totake computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended onhorse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being.Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make shocking changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will findthat many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear 修剪 sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be doneby robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when theyare finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The completechange of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.48. According to the passage, computers can not help farmers decide_______.A. how much money they can earn from their productsB. whether to plant a certain kind of cropC. what livestock to raiseD. when to sell their products49. Which of the following statements is true?A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.B. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.C. Both computers and robots have been in use on today’s farms.D. Students at agricultural colleges needn’t take their normal agricultural courses.50.What is the best title for the whole passage?A. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. However, some people are obviously more willing to take risks than others.Biologists appear to have discovered a physical reason that explains why some people are risk-takers. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, a chemical that spreads signals between nerve cells. It is linked to the brains reward system and is the chemical that makes us feel good, and scientists believe it to be linked to risk-taking. Our nerve cells have dopamine receptors(接收器) which control the amount of dopamine that each cell receives. But not all receptors may be active. When a person has few active receptors to control the amount of dopamine that is received, a cell can become flooded resulting in an extreme feeling of happiness.Researchers at Vanderbilt University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine asked 34 men and women to complete a questionnaire about their risk taking to assess whether they seek new opportunities or are cautious in life. The results of the research were consistent with similar studies carried out with rats, and had the same outcome. It concluded that people who are risk-takers have fewer dopamine receptors than people who are not. This suggests that the rush of pleasure a risk taker receives when a cell becomes flooded with dopamine can become addictive for some people. They therefore pursue new and exciting activities in order to try to repeat this feeling, and as a result their concern for risk becomes considerably reduced.Dopamine gives us a biological reason for risk-taking, but scientists believe there may be psychological reasons too. Sensation-seeking is a personality characteristic that describes the desire to find activities that bring us pleasure. In 1964, psychologist Marvin Zuckerman created the sensation-seeking scale. His 40-item questionnaire, still used today, was given to people who were active in seeking new activities, and to peoplewho were more satisfied with a quiet life. While risk-taking is not a characteristic in itself, it is very much associated with sensation-seeking, as a high sensation-seeker does not evaluate risk in the same way that a low sensation-seeker does. A desire to achieve pleasure means that there is a greater willingness to take more risks. There are both biological and psychological explanations as to why some people may choose to take more risks than others. However, none of these explanations are definitive.1. They are sort of an oral history. ”Tokuda has also been invited to various events in his home state to showcase traditional Chinese culture, including the dragon dance and lion dance, which he also learnt at the martial arts school. Made by ANA Holing, Inc. , it looks like a vacuum cleaner with an iPad attached. But the screen displays the daughter's face as they chat, and its wheels let her walk slowly about the house as though she's really there."Virtual travel" is nothing new, of course. Storytellers, travel writers and artists have been stimulating the senses of armchair tourists for centuries. It's only in recent decades that frequent, safe travel has become available to the non-wealthy.Yet even as the world's middle classes climb out of the armchair and into economy-class seats, there are signs of a post-travel society appearing. Concerns about the environment make people lose interest in carbon-intensive (碳排放量很高的) airlines. And the aging of societies is both slowing down the growth of physical travel and creating demand for alternative ways to experience the world. For the travel industry, virtual reality offers a tantalizing (诱人的) response to these trends.Of course, far-out (前卫的) technologies encourage profits. ANA doesn't plan to start selling Avatars until next year. By one estimate, the global market for this kind of technology will be worth only about 300 million by 2023. By contrast, ANA'straditional travel business brought in more than 19 billion last year. But although the business case for virtual vacations is still weak, the market for technologies that bridge physical distances between families and coworkers seems likely to only expand. ANA's robots may not replace its airplanes any time soon, but they'll almost certainly be a part of travel's high-tech future.1. What purpose does the first paragraph serve in the passage?A.
