Every animal sleeps, but the reason for this has remained foggy. When lab rats are not allowed to sleep, they die within amonth. ①

One idea is that sleep helps us strengthen new memories.

②We know that, while awake, fresh memories are recorded by reinforeing (加强) connections between brain cells, but the memory processes that take place while we sleep have been unclear.

Support is growing for a theory that sleep evolved so that connections between neurons (神经元) in the brain can be weakened overnight, making room for fresh memories to from the next day. ③

Now we have the most direct evidence yet that he is right.

④The synapses in the mice taken at the end of a period of sleep were 18 percent smaller than those taken before sleep, showing that the connections between neurons weaken while sleeping.

If Tononi's theory is right,it would explain why, when we miss a night's,we find it harder the nextday to concentrate and learn new information-our brains may have smaller room for new experences.

Their research also suggests how we may build lasting memories over time even though the synapscs become thinner. The team discovered that some synapses seem to be protected and stayed the same size. ⑤"You keep what matters,”Tononi says.

A. We should also try to sleep well the night before.

B. It’s as if the brain is preserving its most important memories.

C. Similarly, when people go for a few days without sleeping, they get sick.

G. Tononi’s team measured the size of these connections, or synaps es, in the brains of 12 mice.

The man-on-the-street interview is an interview in which a reporter hits the streets with a cameraman to interview people on the sport. ①But with these tips, your first man-on-the-street interview experience can be easy.

● When your boss or professor sends you out to do man-on-the-street interviews for a story, think about the topic and develop a list of about ten general questions relating to it. For example, if your topic is about environmental problems in America, you might ask, “Why do you think environmental protection is important in America?” ②

●Hit the streets with confidence.③Say, “Excuse me, I work for XYZ News, and I was wondering if you could sha re your opinion about this topic.” This is a quick way to get people to warm up to you.Move on to the next person if someone tells you she is not interesteDon’t get discouraged.

●④Each interview that you get on the street shouldn’t be longer than ten minutes. As soon as you get the answer you need, move on to the next person. Make sure that as you go from interview to interview, you are getting a variety of answers. If everyone is giving you the same answer, you won’t be able to use it. A safe number of interviews to conduct is about six to ten.⑤

Lots of people find it hard to get up in the morning ,and put the blame on the alarm clock. In fact, the key to easy morning wake-up lies in resting your body clock. ①

Here is how to make one.

●②In order to make a change, you need to decide why it's important. Do you want to get up in time to have breakfast with your family, get

in some exercise, or just be better prepared for your day? Once you are clear about your reason, tell your family or roommates about the change you want to make.

●Rethink mornings. Now that you know why you want to wake up, consider re-arranging your morning activities. If you want time to have breakfast with your family, save some time the night before by setting out clothes, shoes, and bags. ③That’s a q uarter-hour more you could be sleeping if you bought a coffee maker with a timer.

4、 You must have written your research paper, your personal essay, your book review-----whatever your school class requires. You think you have provided good information in the needed number of words.①

But is it really done? Many teachers and professional writers believe that writing is revision. ②Revision of writing is a necessary skill for students. The classroom is a good place to practice patience, concentration and listening. There are rewards with spending time with your thoughts and really taking time to compose your ideas in an orderly and reasonable way. You should put away your paper after you have written a first version, or draft. Wait several hours, maybe overnight, before working on it more. ③Not only are you refreshed, but you’re looking at things through different eyes. That’s what revision literally means—to see again through different eyes.

Following a four-step process may help you with your paper. The first step in the process is invention. It includes forming many questions about your subject. It is called “question-storming”. ④Then comes the revision period. Take your time to read what you’ve written, to think about it, and maybe to re-shape it based on what you see now, as a kind of new person looking at it with a reader’s eyeglasses rather than a writer’s. The fourth step is called “publication”.⑤In a sense, anytime you turn it over to another person, that’s publication.Probably, the process takes away some of the tension of writing. And worry about the quality of your writing often disappears when you share that writing.

A. Perfect writing is not possible.

B. In the second step, you draft and compose a paper.

C. And you feel good because your work is finished.

D. This is just like returning to a job after a vacation.

E. This does not mean your writing is professional publication.

F. What is most important is getting your thoughts and ideas on paper.

G. In other words, writing well means making needed changes and rewriting.

As a high school coach, I did all I could to help my boys win their games. I ___1___ as hard for victory as they did. A dramatic incident, however, following a game in which I officiated as a referee, ___2___ my perspective on victories and defeats. I was refereeing a league championship basketball game in New Rochelle, New York, between New Rochelle and Yonkers High. New Rochelle was coached by Dan O'Brien, Yonkers by Les Beck. The gym was crowded to capacity, and the volume of noise made it impossible to hear. The game was well played and closely contested. Yonkers was leading by one point as I glanced at the clock and ___3___ there were but 30 seconds left to play. Yonkers, in possession of the ball, passed off —shot —missed. New Rochelle recovered —pushed the ball up court —shot. The ball rolled tantalizingly around the rim and off. The fans shrieked. New Rochelle, the home team, ___4___ the ball, and tapped it in for what looked like victory. The tumult was deafening. I glanced at the clock and saw that the game was over. I hadn't heard the final buzzer because of the noise. I ___5___ with the other official, but he could not help me. Still seeking help in this bedlam, I ___6___ the timekeeper, a young man of 17 or so. He said, "Mr. Covino, the buzzer went off as the ball rolled off the rim, before the final tap-in was made." I was in the unenviable position of having to tell Coach O'Brien the sad news. "Dan," I said, "time ran out before the final basket was ___7___ in. Yonkers won the game." His face clouded over. The young timekeeper came up. He said, "I'm sorry, Dad. The time ran out before the final basket." Suddenly, like the sun coming out from ___8___ a cloud, Coach O'Brien's face lit up. He said, "That's okay, Joe. You did what you had to do. I'm proud of you." Turning to me, he said, "Al, I want you to meet my son, Joe." The two of them then walked off the court together, the coach's arm ___9___ his son's shoulder. B In Britain, the old Road Traffic Act restricted speeds to 2 m.p.h. (miles per hour) in towns and 4 m.p.h. in the country. Later Parliament increased the speed limit to 14 m.p.h. But by 1903 the development of the car industry had made it necessary to raise the limit to 20 m.p.h. By 1930, however, the law was so widely ignored that speeding restrictions were done away with altogether. For five years motorists were free to drive at whatever speeds they likes. Then in 1935 the Road Traffic Act imposed a 30 m.p.h. speed limit in built-up areas, along with the introduction of driving tests and pedestrian crossing. Speeding is now the most common motoring offence in Britain. Offences for speeding fall into three classes: exceeding the limit on a restricted road, exceeding on any road the limit for the vehicle you are driving, and exceeding the 70 m.p.h. limit on any road. A restricted road is one where the street lamps are 200 yards apart, or more. The main controversy (争论) surrounding speeding laws is the extent of their safety value. The Ministry of Transport maintains that speed limits reduce accidents. It claims that when the 30 m.p.h. limit was introduced in 1935 there was a fall of 15 percent in fatal accidents. Likewise, when the 40 m.p.h. speed limit was imposed on a number of roads in London in the late fifties, there was a 28 percent reduction in serious accidents. There were also fewer casualties (伤亡) in the year after the 70 m.p.h. motorway limit was imposed in 1966. In America, however, it is thought that the reduced accident figures are due rather to the increase in traffic density. This is why it has even been suggested that the present speed limits should be done away with completely, or that a guide should be given to inexperienced drivers and the speed limits made advisory, as is done in parts of the USA. ( no more than ten words) 1. What measures were adopted in 1935 in addition to the speeding restrictions? Driving tests and pedestrian crossings 2. Speeding is a motoring offence a driver commits when he _drive too fast/exceeds the speed limits____. 3. What is the opinion of British authorities concerning speeding laws? Speed limits reduce accidents. 4. What reason do Americans give for the reduction in traffic accidents? The increase in traffic density.

[剖析]考查副词。修饰动词应用副词形式。应填officially。 全国Ⅱ]Then, handle the most important tasks first so you'll feel a [典例2][2016· real sense of __62__ (achieve). [剖析]考查名词。介词of后应用名词作宾语。故填achievement。 特别提醒:1.括号中所给词为形容词或副词时,也有可能是考查其比较等级。 [典例1]The__68__(hard) you try to beat him,the more likely you will get hit.He controls you! [剖析]分析句子结构以及根据句意可知,此处为“the+比较级...,the+比较级...”结构,表示“越……,就越……”,故答案为harder。 2.括号中所给词为名词时,有可能不是考查词性转换,而是考查单复数。 [典例2]...for most of us the __69__(change) are gradual and require a lot of effort and work, like cleaning up a polluted river.

七选五强化训练 李仕才 (一) Do you know how to deal with failure at school? Four steps will help you get the most out of each failure and more on. 1 When you feel bad after failing, talk with your parents or good friends, or any other adult. Then decide to take the duty to improve yourself. Read the teachers’comments on your test carefully. Ask yourself what you were trying to do and why you failed. 2 Maybe you didn’t have all the information you needed; maybe you made a mistake or a poor decision. If so, give yourself a pat on the back. Fewer people ever get something right the first time they try it, and often it takes them many times. 3 Sometimes the failure isn’t because of something you did or didn’t do; it is someone else’s fault. But don’t spend time blaming them; instead, move on toward your goals. 4 . Review the situation to see what your choices are. There is a different between making a decision and giving up. Deciding to follow a better way is one thing; simply walking away means you really have failed. Keep trying again. Successful people are different because they choose their next steps instead of just reacting to feelings. If a goal still important to you, figure out what to do and go after it again. 5 . A. No pains, no gains.
