Analysis of the Popularity of the Vampire Films or TV Series——Taking the Vampire Diari
一一一一一一一中外文学文化研究本栏目责任编辑：王力Vampire is not a fresh word in the modern times.But recently the vampire films and the vampire TV series are quite popular in the globe.From the film “Twilight ”to TV series “True Blood ”and “Vampire Diaries ”,all these vampires have quite a number of cra⁃zy fans.Why is the vampire so popular nowadays?In other words,why are there so many people like this kind of films or TV series?According to the questionnaire that I made in Baidu,there are so many reasons why they like watching the vampire films and TV se⁃ries.Someone said that he liked vampires because of its immortali⁃ty characteristic which human beings can ’t possess.Someone said that he liked vampires because they reflected various aspects of contemporary life,such as sexuality,power,alienation,illness,andloneliness.As for me,I will use Jackie Stacey ’[1]three discourses-‘escapism ’,‘identification ’and ‘consumerism ’to analyze the reason of the popularity of the vampire films or TV series [90].The term ‘escapism ’is most often used pejoratively,applied to popular culture in order to condemn it as trivial and unworthy of critical or academic engagement.The obvious meaning of ‘escapism ’involves an ‘escape,especially from reality ’.Implying totally un⁃critical viewers,it is used to disparage film and TV fictions as irre⁃sponsible mass forms-as opposed to the ‘seriousness ’of art or documentaries.Escapism often equals ‘genre ’entertainment forms,and within them,in a very gendered move,the musical and romance.[2]This is taken for granted,even though the more ‘male genres ’of the war film of courtroom drama (higher stratus because signifying a connection to ‘public ’issues)equally provide an enter⁃taining escape from the everyday,and stage their conflicts via equally polarized melodramatic oppositions and scenarios of confes⁃sion.[148]In the perspective of ‘escapism ’,the first reason why people like to watch the vampire films is that the audience could enjoy thefantasy escape when vampires consume the human to sustain the in⁃human through the bite.This kind of escape can make people feel relaxed and happy in the rapidly developed society.Based on the industrial civilization,material civilization in the context of the modern western world is like a double-edged sword.On the one hand,it accelerates the development of the material civilization;on the other hand,it almost destroys the traditional civilization.People are alienated by the material civilization,so they feel tired and wor⁃ried.All of them are under the control of the material world and the people ’s life is meaningless.Therefore,the value of the anti-mate⁃rial civilization is established and it is gradually rooted in the peo⁃ple ’s minds as ideology.How to release the indignation in the mate⁃rial-oriented society?Watch the horrific movies.Because the obvi⁃ous function of the horrific movies,especially the vampire movies,is to bring the peak experience to the audience.As we know,vam⁃pires were usually reported as bloated in appearance,and ruddy,purplish,or dark in color;these characteristics were often attribut⁃ed to the recent drinking of blood.Indeed,blood was often seen seeping from the mouth and nose when one was seen in its shroud or coffin and its left eye was often open.Vampires possess the su⁃perpower and also they have the feelings and thoughts like human beings.So they can release the unconscious desire instead of hu⁃man beings.To some degree,vampires make the audiences under⁃stand the things that are not understood in reality and make the au⁃diences get certain inner needs.Thus,on the one hand,human be⁃ings could release their depressed desire in the modern society;on the other hand,human beings could transform the terror and pain into visual or bodily pleasure.Furthermore,the immortality of the vampires can also be seen as an important reason for their populari⁃ty in a time when the fear of ultimately,painful,and slow death is prevalent in Western society.Vampires are invulnerable to death收稿日期：2017-01-05修回日期：2017-01-15作者简介：李茜（1987—），女，四川绵阳人，讲师，硕士研究生，主要研究方向为英语国家社会与文化。
