Passage 1

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

The traditional pattern of classroom experience at the college level brings the professor and a group of 20 to 30 students together for a 45-to-50 minute class session two or three times a week. The most common method of instruction is the lecture. When lectures are the principle method of instruction in large classes, regular periods may be set side of small group discussion under the leadership of an assistant instructor. In cases where a small class size encourages informality, lectures may be combined with discussion sessions based on assigned readings, required textbooks and the other outside materials.

Accurate, legible notes are invaluable aids to the student who is enrolled in a lecture course. Notes should be taken during lectures, and when the student is reading the texts prior to each session of the course. The key to good note-taking is to be able to listen a lot and to write only as much as needed to record the essence of a point or idea presented by the lecture. Thus, students should make efforts to identify only the main points and ideas being presented and write them down in outline form. They should also try their best to take good notes the first time and not try to recopy notes—or to do so only when clarity and conciseness demand it.

However, many students find the experience of attending university lectures to be a confusing and frustrating experience. The new student sees the other students continuously writing on notebooks and wonders what to write. Very often the student leaves the lecture with notes which do not catch the main points. So most institutions provide courses which assist new students to develop the skills they need to be effective listeners and also note-takers.

Finally they should review their notes for about five minutes on the same day that they take them, and go over them again for about half an hour at least once a week, according to a regular schedule. There is no course syllabus to be memorized; the examinations will be based on the material presented in the lectures and textbooks.

21. Which is the main method of instruction in college according to the passage?

A) Informed talks.

B) Lectures.

C) 40-to-50-minute class sessions.

D) Small group discussions.

22. Where can lectures and discussions be combined together?

A) In a regular class.

B) In a large class.

C) In a small class.

D) In a class where textbooks are read.

23. The word ―invaluable‖ (Line 1, Paragraph 2) probably means _______.

A) worthless

B) valuable

C) necessary

D) useless

24. If students want to take good notes, they should _______.

A) make it not only in the lecture course, but after class

B) try to make it clearly

C) try to recopy notes after class

D) try to listen a lot and write down the main points

25. How will the examination be organized?

A) The students will be provided with some materials in textbooks.

B) The students have to prepare the course syllabus.

C) The students have nothing to prepare but the material in the textbooks and lectures.

D) They have to prepare nothing but the course syllabus.

Passage 2

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

Everybody gets sick. Disease and injury make us suffer throughout our lives until, finally, some attack on the body brings our existence to an end. Fortunately, most of us in modern industrialized societies can take relatively good health for granted most of the time. In fact, we tend to fully realize the importance of good health only when we or those close to us become seriously ill. At such times we keenly appreciate the ancient truth that health is our most precious asset, one for which we might readily give up such rewards as power, wealth, or fame.

Because ill health is universal problem, affecting both the individual and society, the human response to sickness is always socially organized. No society leaves the responsibility for maintaining health and treating ill health entirely to the individual. Each society develops its own concepts of health and sickness and authorizes certain people to decide who is sick and how the sick should be treated. Around this focus there arises, over time, a number of standards, values, groups, statuses, and roles: in other words, an institution. To the sociologist, then, medicine is the institution concerned with the maintenance of health and treatment of disease.

In the simplest pre-industrial societies, medicine is usually an aspect of religion. The social arrangements for dealing with sickness are very elementary, often involving only two roles: the sick and the healer. The latter is typically also the priest, who relies primarily on religious ceremonies, both to identify and to treat disease: for example, bones may be thrown to establish a cause, songs may be used to bring about a cure. In modern industrialized societies, on the other hand, the institution has become highly complicated and specialized, including dozens of roles such as those of brain surgeon, druggist and hospital administrator, linked with various organizations such as nursing homes, insurance companies, and medical schools. Medicine, in fact, has become the subject of intense sociological interest precisely because it is now one of the most pervasive and costly institutions of modern society.

26. Which of the following statements is true according to Paragraph 1?

A) Nowadays most people believe they can have fairly good health.

B) Human life involves a great deal of pain and suffering.

C) Most of us are aware of the full value of health.

D) Ancient people believed that health was more expensive than anything else.

27. The word ―authorize‖ in Paragraph 2 means ―_____________‖.

A) make way for

B) give power to

C) write an order for

D) make it possible for

28. In Paragraph 2, we learn that the sociologist regards medicine as ____________.

A) a system whose purpose is to treat disease and keep people healthy

B) a universal problem that affects every society

C) a social responsibility to treat ill health

D) a science that focuses on the treatment of disease

29. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following is NOT true?

A) In the past, bones might be used to decide why people fell ill.

B) In pre-industrial societies priests sometimes treated patients by singing.

C) Modern medicine is so complicated that sociology no longer has a place in it.

D) There were only two roles in an elementary medical system, the patient and the one who

tried to cure him.

30. The author of this passage is mainly concerned with _______________.

A) sociological aspects in medicine

B) medical treatment of diseases

Questions 31 to 40 are based on the following passage.

A Few Aspects of American Life

Travel

It’s summertime. For many Americans, this is the season to travel. Why? Because school is over and the weather is great. And most of all, they believe they deserve a break. When Americans take a break, they often head for their favorite vacation spot.

Throughout their history, Americans have been people on the move. The early immigrants had to travel to get to the New World. Once they arrived, the settled along the East Coast. But they weren’t content to stay here. Explorers and traders journeyed to the unknown western territories. Later, settlers moved west to develop new areas. As a result of this west movement, Americans eventually occupied the whole continent—from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Even today, Americans seem unable to stay put. Research says that average American moves every five years.

Americans are used to traveling. Some people make long-distance commuting to work daily. Their jobs may even require them to take frequent business trips. Most companies provide an annual vacation for their employees, and people often use that time to travel. Some people just visit friend or relatives in distant states. Some go on low-budget weekend trips and stay in economy motels. Those with more expensive tastes choose luxurious hotels. Camping out in the great outdoors appeals to adventurous types. Some travel in recreational vehicles to camp out in comfort, while oth ers ―rough it‖ by sleeping in tents. Families often plan their trips with the kids in mind. More and more ―family friendly‖ hotels offer special programs for children.

Pet

Americans love pets. Many pet owners treat their pets as a part of the family. You might say Americans treat their pets like they treat their children—sometimes even better.

In America, there are more households with pets than those with children. At least 43 percent of US homes have pets of some sort. Usual creatures, such as monkeys, snakes and even wolves,

find a home with some Americans. More common pets include fish, mice and birds. But the all-time favorites are cats and dogs, even at the White House. Americans sometimes have strong feelings about whether dogs or cats make be tter pets. ―Dog people‖ and ―cat people‖ often enjoy friendly competition.

Many grocery stores in America sell pet foods. Pets can even accompany their owners on vacation. Fancy hotels are beginning to accommodate both man and animal. Animal guests at Four Seasons Hotels can enjoy delicious meals served on fine china and sleep in soft beds.

The average American enjoys having pets around, and for good reason. Researchers have discovered that interacting with animals lowers a person’s blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from robbers and unwelcome visitors. Cats can help rid the home of unwanted mice. Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can provide friendship and love. In many cases, having a pet prepares a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Pets even encourage social relationships: they give their owners an appearance of friendliness, and they provide a good subject of conversation.

Pets are as basic to American culture as hot dogs or apple pie. To Americans, pets are not just property, but a part of the family.

Marriage

―I do.‖ To Americans, these two words carry great meaning. They can even change your life, especially if you say them at your own wedding. Making wedding promises is like signing a contract. Now Ameri cans don’t really think marriage is a business deal. But marriage is a serious business.

It all begins with engagement. Traditionally, a young man asks the father of his sweetheart for permission to marry her. If the father agrees, the man later proposes to her. Often he tries to surprise her by asking her to marry him in a romantic way.

Sometimes the couple just decides together that the time is right to get married. They may be engaged for weeks, months or even years. As the big approaches, bridal showers and bachelor’s parties provide many gifts. Today many couples also receive counseling during engagement. This prepares them for the challenges of married life.

At last it’s time for the wedding. Although most weddings follow long-held traditio ns, there’s still room for individualism. For example, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some people get married outdoors. A few even have the ceremony while skydiving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends. They choose their own style of colors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things rarely change. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears ―something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue‖. The groom wears a formal suit. Relatives and close friends participate in the ceremony.

As the ceremony begins, the groom stands with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their promises. Traditionally, they promise to love each other ―for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health‖. But sometimes the couple composes their own promises. They give each other a gold ring as a symbol of their marriage promise. Finally the minister announces the big moment: ―I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!‖

Could you please tell me where is the bookstore ?

;15(选用by the way 的占多数)。 很多同学写成prefer(未考虑第三人称单数); pay(句意不懂); quiet(副词不会使用); suitable(与proper的使用不分); decided(词性选择不对)。
