It's this lively neighborhood with markets selling fresh breads, dried fruits, and tasty beef and lamb dishes. The narrow alleys are crammed with food stalls and it smells so good!Speaking of food, you have to try roujiamo when you're in Xi'an. It's this delicious flatbread stuffed with shredded meat and spices. So yummy!Another city I adore is Chengdu. It's the capital of Sichuan province which is famous for its incredibly spicy andflavor-packed cuisine. If you love super bold, tongue-tingling flavors, Chengdu is paradise.Chengdu has tons of amazing parks and gardens that make it feel like a lush, green city. My favorite is the Wuhou Memorial Temple with its beautiful ponds and shrines. You can watch people doing tai chi or playing traditional Chinese games like xiangqi (sort of like chess).But maybe the best part of Chengdu is that it's home to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding! This enormous facility lets you see real giant pandas up close as they munch on bamboo, tumble around, and just be totally adorable. The baby pandas are the cutest things ever. If you're lucky, you might even get to hold one!I also really love the city of Hangzhou. It's in a region of China that's famous for its picture-perfect landscapes ofmist-shrouded lakes, willow trees, and pagodas. Hangzhou has been called one of the most beautiful cities in China for centuries!The star attraction is West Lake, a huge freshwater lake surrounded by gardens, temples, and hills. You can spend hours wandering along the lakes trails finding hidden corners and pavilions. At night, the two causeways across the lake light up making everything look magical.One of my best memories is taking a boat tour across the lake to visit some of the little islands. They have tea houses, marble boats, and the most gorgeous flowers everywhere. I also loved seeing performers singing traditional Hangzhou operas on little stages over the water.For a fun day trip, we visited one of the water towns outside Hangzhou called Wuzhen. It has tiny canals crisscrossing the whole village instead of roads. You can take a gondola ride along the canals and see all the old wooden homes, bridges, and shopkeepers going about their day.Wuzhen is known for its indigo-dyed textiles and we even got to try making our own prints using wooden batik stamps. It was harder than I thought but so satisfying! I brought mine home as a souvenir.My absolute favorite city in China just might be Guilin though. It's in the Guangxi region which has the mostjaw-dropping natural scenery of dramatic karst hills jutting up from the ground. Guilin looks like something straight out of a traditional Chinese painting!We took a cruise down the Li River which winds through the incredible hills and valleys. It felt like we were floating through an enchanted landscape. The boat stopped along the way so wecould hike up into caves and explore little villages nestled in the hills. Everywhere you looked was just breathtaking.Another must-do is visiting the Reed Flute Cave, one of the largest and most spectacular caves in the world. It's illuminated with colorful lights that make all the stalagmites, stalactites, and rock formations look like an alien world. There are huge caverns and winding underground rivers. It was like something out of a fantasy novel!While in Guilin, be sure to try dishes like rice noodle soup, luosifen noodles, and op la! which is a sticky peanut snack. You'll find lots of vendors cooking up regional specialties on street stalls and in night markets too.Those are some of my favorite cities to explore in China so far! I always beg my mom to buy me a few because I can't get enough of the flaky crusts and savory fillings!One downside of Beijing is that it's really crowded and there's a lot of traffic. That's why sometimes it's nice to get out of the city and go to places like Chengde. Chengde is a few hours north of Beijing and it has these incredible imperial summer gardens called Bishu Shanzhuang. The gardens are full of palaces, temples, and traditional Chinese buildings surrounded by beautiful lakes and mountains. When the emperors used to live there during summer, they could go boating, hunt, and just relax away from the busy capital.My family spent a few days at Bishu Shanzhuang and we had a blast exploring all the courtyards, towers, and pavilions. We also saw a Chinese opera show performed right on the lake which was so colorful and lively with all the singing, dancing, and acrobatics. At night we got to take a boat ride across the lake and it was magical seeing the lit up gardens reflected in the still water. Chengde was the perfect escape from bustling Beijing.Another one of my favorite cities is Xi'an, which is the capital of Shaanxi province. Xi'an is famous for the incredible Terracotta Warriors. Imagine an underground museum the size of a wholevillage filled with thousands of life-size clay warrior statues buried with the first emperor of China over 2000 years ago! Each warrior statue is unique with different faces, hairstyles, and even different uniforms showing their ranks. It's crazy that they were all buried underground for so long!My mind was totally blown walking through the huge pits uncovering these ancient sculptures one by one. There are still archaeologists carefully digging up more sections bit by bit. We also got to see where they make the replicas and even try sculpting a little terracotta figure ourselves - it's much harder than it looks! Besides the warriors, Xi'an has an awesome Muslim Quarter filled with lively streets, delicious restaurants, and street food vendors. I stuffed myself with fresh naan bread, lamb kebabs, and these sticky sweet cakes.Speaking of good food, let me tell you about Chengdu in Sichuan province. This city is the absolute best if you love spicy food! Sichuan cuisine is famous across China for its bold, tongue-tingling flavors. My favorite Sichuan dish is the classic kung pao chicken. The chicken is cooked with a tongue-numbing sauce made with chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, garlic, and other yummy spices. Just thinking about it is making my mouth water.In Chengdu we went to these amazing hot pot restaurants where you get a big simmering pot of spicy broth right at your table. Then you order all sorts of ingredients like thinly sliced meat, seafood, mushrooms, leafy greens, dumplings, and noodles to cook yourself in the hot pot. It's so fun swishing everything around with your chopsticks and fishing out the different bite-sized morsels to dip in your own customized sauce of garlic, sesame, chili crisp, or whatever you like. I could eat hot pot every single day!When you need a break from all the spicy food in Chengdu, you can head to one of the gorgeous parks or nature areas around the city. We visited a place called Huanglongxi which had these jaw-dropping multicolored pools and waterfalls. The water flows over these gorgeous bright yellow, red, green, and blue rocks creating a million shimmering pools. It felt like we were walking through a trippy fantasy land of rainbow waterfalls!Another amazing place for nature in Chengdu is the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
