She is a self-centered woman who regards money the most important thing in her life. Gatsby once said “Her voice is full of money.” Daisy had a daughter, which was viewed just as a doll by Daisy. They are not in good relationship. Daisy lacked responsibility for both her daughter and other people, which can be seen how she react to the accident she had caused. All in all, she is very indifferent, not caring about other but only herself. In order to protect herself, she can sacrifice everyone.

Symbolism ——Character
Fitzgerald used his own life experience to give Gatsby deeper symbolic meanings. Gatsby’s experience was similar with a lot American people in the first part of 20th century. Using the symbolism to write this novel, Fitzgerald expressed his disappointment to The Lost Generation. He was also worried about the decaying traditional values, ideas and the destroying American Dreams.

• Nick was both an insider, who was associated with other characters, observing their motivations and crucially contributing to the development of the plot and an outsider who told the story and portrayed characters from an on looking perspective. • Different from emotional Gatsby, Nick was the voice of Fitzgerald’s rational self. Nick was too much immersed in time and in reality and could only look at the facts as tragic things. • Nick’s affair with Jordan was similar to Gatsby’s. The only difference was Nick was very clear about the reality. However, Gatsby had got into the trap and was unwilling to free himself.
