Anna’s blog[bl?g]

Hello everyone. Welcome to my blog

About me

My name is Anna. I’m from Germany['d???m?n?]. I’m 11 years old. I’m tall and thin[θ?n]. I have long hair. I live with my family in a house close to some mountains. My mum is an Art teacher. My dad is a doctor. I have an elder sister and an elder brother.

About my school and my hobbies(hobby ['h?b?] )

Every day, I go to school by school bus. My favorite ['fev?r?t] subjects ['s?bd?ekt] are Maths [m?θs], Art and Science['sa??ns]. I like my school because the teachers are all very friendly['fren(d)l?]. My dream[dri?m] is to be an engineer [end??'n??].

I like many sports[sp??t]. I’m good at swimming and playing basketball. These are my favorite hobbies.

Dear Anna,

Hi! I saw your blog on the Internet ['?nt?n?t] and I’d like to be your e-friend. My name is Jason. I’m 12 years old. I’m tall. I have short black hair.

I live in a flat [fl?t] in Beijing with my parents. My dad is an engineer and my mother is an English teacher.

My school is far away from our home. I go to school by bus. My favorite subject is Maths. I like my school and I have lots of friends there.

I like flying kites [fla?][ka?t] in my free time[fri?]. My favorite sports are volleyball ['v?l?b??l] and football.

I hope to hear from you soon.

A day at school

By Sam

I am a junior high school ['d?u?n??] student. I love going to school.

My school is close to my home, so I always go to school on foot. Classes start at 8 a.m., and I am seldom['seld?m] late[le?t]. My favorite['fev?r?t] subject ['s?bd?ekt] is Geography[d??'?gr?f?]. I enjoy learning about different places in the world.

In the morning, we usually study Chinese, Maths and English. We have our morning break [bre?k] at 9:50 a.m. When the bell [bel] rings[r??], I run to the playground with my best friends Tom and Jack. We often play games. Break ends at 10:10 a.m. How short it is!

Lunch is from 11:50 a.m. to 12:30p.m. Afternoon classes end at 3:30 p.m. Then Tom, Jack and I take part in the school band [b?nd] practice ['pr?kt?s]. We make great music together[t?'gee?].

I always have a good time at school.

My mother is a junior high school teacher. She teaches English.

My mother gets up at 6 o’clock every day and has breakfast at 6:30 a.m. She always arrives at school at 7:25 a.m. She usually has two lessons in the morning. In the afternoon, she has one lesson. After school, she plays volleyball['v?l?b??l] with her students.

In the evening, she cooks dinner. After dinner, she prepares her lessons[pr?'pe?]. She sometimes helps me with my homework. She usually goes to bed at 11 p.m.

Protect [pr?'tekt] the Earth

The Earth[??θ] is a beautiful place.

There are forests['f?r?st] and rivers, mountains and fields

[fi?ld]. Some places are very hot, and some are very cold.

There are many different plants. Some are large. Some are small. All plants need light and water. There are different animals on Earth too. Some live on the land. Some fly in the sky. Some live under the water.

There are also many people like you and me on Earth. The Earth provides[pr?'va?d] us with air, water and food. It is our home.

Today, there is a lot of pollution pollution [p?'lu??(?)n]. We burn [b??n]things to make energy. This pollutes[p?'lu?t] the air. We put our rubbish['r?b??] into the sea and under the ground. This pollutes the Earth and kills animals and plants.

We must stop doing these things. It is important for us to protect [pr?'tekt] the Earth for our future['fju?t??].

Air

Air has no smell. [smel]

Air has no taste. [te?st]

But when the wind blows, [bl??]

You feel it on your face.

Look at a kite,

Or a plane [ple?n] in the air.

How do they stay[ste?] there?

They ride on air.

How does a balloon[b?'lu?n]

Rise [ra?z] in the air,

And lift people up[l?ft]?

It uses hot air.

We need air to breathe. [bri?e]

We need air to survive. [s?'va?v]

And when we breathe it,

It keeps us alive. [?'la?v]

A long time ago, there were ten suns in the sky. The weather ['wee?] was very hot. Plants could not grow[gr??]. Animals could not live long. There was a man. His name was Houyi. He shot (shoot [?u?t] )nine suns out of the sky. In the end, only one sun remained[r?'me?n] . The weather got cooler. Plants could grow. People were happy.

Unit 4

The four seasons['si?z(?)n]

Spring

In spring, the weather starts to get warm. The wind blows [bl??] gently['d?entl?]. It often rains. Plants start to grow. Everything turns green. It is exciting to take a trip in spring.

Summer

The weather is hot in summer. The sun shines [?a?n] brightly ['braitli]. Many people like to go to the beach [bi?t?] and swim in the sea. It is nice to eat ice cream in the hot weather.

Autumn

In autumn, everything changes. Leaves turn[t??n]brown, red or yellow and start falling from the trees. It is nice to go on a picnic ['p?kn?k] at this time of year because the weather is cool and dry [dra?].

Winter

Winter is often cold and snowy['sn???]. Children love winter because they love to play in the snow. It is interesting to make snowmen. People usually spend time with their relatives ['rel?t?v] during the Spring Festival ['fest?v(?)l].

My favorite season

My favorite season is winter.

Winter is very cold and sometimes snowy. It is interesting to make snowmen in winter.

The Spring Festival is in winter and it is my favorite holiday. I visit my grandparents and eat lots of nice food. It is exciting to get red packets ['p?k?t] during the Spring Festival.

The weather in China

In the north of China, it is very cold and dry in winter. There is sometimes heavy snow. Summer is different. It is sometimes very hot during the day, but it is often cool in the evening. Spring and autumn are the nicest seasons.

The weather in the middle and east of China is quite [kwa?t] different. It is hot and dry in summer and very cold and wet in winter.

In the south of China, winter is usually short and cool. It sometimes rains. In summer, the weather is often hot and wet.

The weather in the south-west of China is very special ['spe?(?)l]. It is comfortable to['k?mf(?)t?b(?)l] live there because summer is cool and winter is warm.

A trip to space

by Jerry

10 October 2053

I’m so happy! Tomorrow I’ll be one of the first students to travel into space. The spaceship['spe?s??p] will leave the Earth at 9 a. m. It’ll take us to the Moon. I can’t wait!

The Moon is around[?'ra?nd] 380,000 kilometers from the Earth, so it’ll take us about four days to get there. There’s no gravity['gr?v?t?] in space, so we’ll be able to float [fl??t] around the spaceship. We’ll have to tie[ta?] ourselves to our beds so that we won’t float away [fl??t] in our sleep! Without gravity, our bodies may get weak [wi?k], so we’ll have to do exercises ['eks?sa?z] every day.

When we arrive, I’m going to walk on the Moon. I’ll have to wear a spacesuit['spe?ssu?t; -sju?t] to help me breathe [bri?e] because there’s no air on the Moon. I’m going to take as many photos as I can, that is, if my camera ['k?m(?)r?] still works up there…

Hotels on the Moon

Do you want to spend your holidays in hotels on the Moon?

At the moment, there are no hotels on the Moon. But all this will change[t?e?n(d)?]. If we can solve[s?lv] some problems, we will be able to build hotels there in the future. The Moon is very cold, so the hotels will have to be warm. They will also need a large amount of air so that people there can breathe[bri?e].

The hotels on the Moon will have rooms with big windows so that you can see the Earth. You will be able to swim in the hotel swimming pool [pu?l] and see all the stars around you. But you should not get too excited[?k'sa?t?d] . A trip to the Moon will cost a lot of money!

Visiting Shanghai

Shanghai is one of the largest cities in the world. If you like sightseeing['sa?tsi???], you will love it!

People’s Square[skwe?]

People’s Square is in the center of Shanghai. It is a large public['p?bl?k] area['e?r??] with green grass, fountains ['fa?nt?n] and birds. If you visit People’s Square, you can also see famous buildings around it, such as the Shanghai Grand [gr?nd] Theater['θi?t?, 'θi:?-] and the Shanghai Museum.

The Bund [b?nd]

The Bund is where old Shanghai meets new Shanghai. If you walk along the Bund, you will see many old buildings. The Pudong New Area, just across the Huangpu River, has many modern buildings. At night, these tall buildings light up the sky in every direction[d?'rek?(?)n; da?-].

Yu Garden

Yu Garden is a traditional [tr?'d??(?)n(?)l] garden. If you enjoy history and natural ['n?t?(?)r(?)l] beauty['bju?t?], you will love this garden. There are many beautiful buildings, bridges[br?d?] and ponds [p?nd]. You can also buy different snacks [sn?k] just outside the garden.

Hong Kong —a wonderful place to visit

If you like shopping, you will love Hong Kong. There are some expensive shops and also some cheap ones. There is something for everyone in Hong Kong.

One of the most interesting places in Hong Kong is Ocean Park ['???(?)n]. You can visit the Lowland['l??l?nd] Gardens to see some animals, or get a bird’s-eye view [vju?] of the whole park by riding in a cable car['ke?b(?)l]. At the Ocean['???(?)n] Theater['θ??t?], you can watch a dolphin['d?lf?n] show.

Visitors from all over the world come to Hong Kong every year and have a wonderful time.

World Heritage['her?t?d?] Sites

There are over 900 World Heritage Sites around the world. They are natural ['n?t?(?)r(?)l] or man-made ['m?n'med] places. We protect[pr?'tekt] these places because they are very special and important to world culture ['k?lt??].

China has the third most heritage sites in the world after Italy['it?li] and Spain[spein]. There are more than 40 sites in China, for example, the Great Wall and West Lake. You can find a list of the sites on the Internet.

Unit 7

The Clubs [kl?b] Fair[fe?]

Linda and Leo are new students at Rosie Bridge School. Last month, they attended [?'tend] the Clubs Fair.

First, Linda and Leo learnt about the Rocket ['r?k?t] Club.

“Our club will teach you how to build rockets. Then you can launch [l??n t?] them into the sky,” a boy said. “Watch!”

He took a rocket and launched it. The rocket disappeared[d?s?'p??] into the sky. Linda and Leo were very surprised.

“Will it go all the way into space?” Linda asked.

“Of course it won’t,” a girl from another club shouted. “Our club is better. Come and join the Solar['s??l?] Power ['pa??] Club.”

“What do you do?” asked Leo.

“We make wonderful machines[m?'?i?n]. They only use solar power. Look!”

She took a toy car [t??]from the table and then used a remote[r?'m??t] control [k?n'tr??l] to drive it all around the playground ['ple?gra?nd].

“It uses power from the Sun,” said Linda. “That’s amazing[?'mez??]!”

Linda and Leo learnt about many clubs. After the fair, they felt very excited

[?k'sa?t?d].

“I want to join [d???n]all the clubs,” said Linda.

“Me too!” said Leo.

A trip [tr?p] to Lucky['l?k?] Island['a?l?nd]

Last Sunday, my friends and I went on an adventure [?d'vent??] with the Hiking ['ha?k??] Club. The night before, I was so excited that I could not sleep! I got up really early on Sunday morning. After breakfast, I packed [p?k] my lunch and left home quickly. I hurried to school ['h?r?] and met other students and Mr. Li, our trip leader. When we were all there, we left for Lucky Island.

The boat ride to Lucky Island was really exciting[?k'sa?t??]! We saw a lot of fish and colorful ['k?l?f?l] birds. When we got to Lucky Island, we went on a long walk and saw some pretty ['pr?t?] flowers. After the hike[ha?k], we were very hungry! We sat on the beach[bi?t?] and ate our lunch. After that, we played games and took pictures. We really enjoyed ourselves. Finally it was time to go home. I cannot wait for my next adventure[?d'vent??] with Mr. Li and the Hiking Club!

Summer camps[k?mp]

Many children in the USA and Canada go to summer camps. Many summer camps take place in the countryside ['k?ntr?sa?d]. Young children usually join day camps. They go back home after spending a few hours at camp. Older children may spend a few nights away from home. They can make new friends and learn useful

['ju?sf?l; -f(?)l] skills[sk?l] at camp.

There are also summer camps in China. Some summer camps are for international students[?nt?'n??(?)n(?)l]. Many of them like to learn about Chinese culture

['k?lt??].

Unit 8

Unusual [?n'ju????l] collections [k?'lek?(?)n]

Sam and Helen’s grandparents ['ɡr?nd,pε?r?nt] collect [k?'lekt] almost everything. There are eight doorbells ['d??bel] on their front door!

“This silver ['s?lv?] doorbell is my favorite ['feiv?rit],” said Helen. She pushed [p??] it and soon Grandpa opened the door.

“Come in, my dear grandson ['gr?n(d)s?n] and granddaughter['gr?nd??t?]!”he said.

“Who started collecting doorbells, Grandpa?” asked Sam.

“Your grandma,” he answered. “She loves doorbells.”

“What do you like collecting, Grandpa?” asked Helen.

“I like collecting newspapers.”

They went inside [?n'sa?d] and saw newspapers everywhere.

“Hello children!” called Grandma. “Let’s have some tea.”

The children followed her into the living room and saw lots of toys[t??] there. There was hardly ['hɑ?dl?] any space [spe?s] for the children to sit down.

“Whose toys are these?” asked Helen.

“They are ours,” said Grandma. “We both like collecting toys.”

“But remember,”said Grandpa, “we have a lot of free time! You have your school work to do, so you shouldn’t spend too much time collecting things!”

My collection[k?'lek?(?)n]

Harry has written about his collection of postcards['p?ustka:d].

I collect postcards. I started the collection two years ago.

Now I have over 100 different postcards. Some show famous places of interest. Some show great works of art. My favorite postcard is from the UK. It has a picture of Big Ben on it.

It is easy to get postcards. Friends send [send] them to each other for holidays or birthdays.

I like collecting postcards. They are beautiful and teach me a lot about different places.

Collecting stamps is educational [ed??'ke???n(?)l]!

Yesterday was Show and Tell Day at Daniel’s school.

Daniel was the first student to speak. He showed his classmates['klɑ?sme?t] an old stamp[st?mp].

“My father gave me this first stamp,” said Daniel. “It has a picture of an old Chinese stone bridge[st??n] [br?d?] on it. This made me more interested in Chinese culture. Soon I started to look for more stamps with interesting pictures.”

“Now I have over 100 stamps,” said Daniel. “I learnt a lot about our country and its great culture from the stamps! Collecting stamps is really educational!”

“That was a great talk. Thank you, Daniel,” said the teacher.

Postcards['p?ustka:d].

We can learn a lot about a place, its history ['h?st(?)r?] and culture['k?lt??] from a postcard and stamp[st?mp] on it.

In 2005, some postcard collectors[k?'lekt?]from different countries started a project['pr?d?ekt]. First, they created(create [kri?'e?t])a website ['w?bsa?t] . Then people from all over the world could join and become members ['memb?]. The members send each other postcards. As a result[r?'z?lt], they make new friends and learn about the culture and history of different countries.

My grandma

My grandma was a short woman with grey[gre?] hair. She was always cheerful

['t???f?l; -f(?)l]. She was a very good cook[k?k]. Her dishes[d??] were probably

['pr?b?bl?] the best in the world! I will never forget the taste[te?st], and the smell[smel] as well.

Grandma took care of my family. She was really kind and patient['pe??(?)nt]. She died two years ago and I miss[m?s] her very much.

——Ben

Alice

Alice is my best friend. She is a tall girl with glasses. She often tells me jokes [d???k] to make me laugh[lɑ?f], but she never makes fun of others.

Alice is a smart [smɑ?t] girl. She is good at Maths[m?θs]. We often study and play table tennis ['ten?s] together. I hope we will always remain[r?'me?n] friends.

Joyce

Mr. Li

Mr. Li is my Maths teacher. He is tall and thin[θ?n]. His classes are always full of fun. He uses lots of games in his teaching['ti?t???].

Mr. Li is strict about[str?kt] our studies, but he always encourages (encourage

[?n'k?r?d?; en-])us and gives us support[s?'p??t]. He often says, "Never give up and you'll be successful[s?k'sesf?l; -f(?)l]."

--Amy

Mother's Day

Mums do a lot of hard work. They cook and clean for us. They also encourage [?n'k?r ?d?; en-]us and give us support[s?'p??t]. Mother's Day is the time for us to say "Thank you" to our mums.

In most countries, people celebrate['sel?bre?t] Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May every year. On this day, people like to buy flowers and make special ['spe?(?)l] Mother's Day cards [kɑ?d] for their mums.

Mother's Day is not only about gifts[g?ft]. We can help our mums do the housework. We can take them to the park or the cinema. Sometimes a simple hug[h?g] or saying "I love you, Mum" is the perfect ['p??f?kt] gift for our mums.

Mother's Day is about love. If you love your mum, why not plan a special Mother’s Day for her?

Unit 2

France[frɑ?ns] is calling

France is in Western ['west(?)n] Europe['j?r?p]. It is a country with many beautiful places.

Paris['p?r?s] is the capital ['k?p?t(?)l] of France. Here you will find many famous places of interest such as the Eiffel Tower. You can go to the Louvre ['lu:v?] Museum if you like art. The most famous street in Paris is the Champs-Elysees. This is the place to go if you want to visit some shops and department stores

[d?'pɑ?tm(?)nt] [st??].

France is very famous for its wine[wa?n]. There are many vineyards ['v?nj?d]in the centre of France and farmers grow grapes[gre?p]to make excellent ['eks(?)l(?)nt] French wine.

The south of France lies on the coast [k??st], and it is famous for its wonderful ['w?nd?f?l; -f(?)l] beaches[bi?t?]. A French town[ta?n] by the sea is the perfect place for

a summer holiday, but if you prefer to [pr?'f??] visit France in winter, you can try skiing ['ski???] on the mountains in the French Alps [?lps].

France has something for everyone, so why not visit France this year?

Last July, I went to Beijing to visit uncle Zhang. He took me to many interesting places such as the Great Wall, the Summer Palace['p?l?s] and the Palace Museum [mju?'z??m]. I learnt a lot about the Ming and the Qing dynasties(dynasty ['da?n?sti]). We also visited the Main [me?n] Stadium['ste?d??m] for the 2008 Olympics. We went shopping on Wangfujing Street. I had a wonderful time in Beijing and I plan to [pl?n] visit it again during the Spring Festival[spr??]['fest?v?l] next year.

Hi Natee,

My name is Mandy. I found your email address[?'dres] on an e-friend website ['websait], and I'd like to be friends with you.

I'm from Beijing, China, and I'm thirteen years old. My mum is a teacher, and my dad is a doctor. My grandparents live in Chengdu. They come to visit us every year, and they always bring[br??] me a lot of delicious[d?'l???s] Sichuan food!

I live far away from my school, so I have to get up early in the morning. I like Maths [m?θs]and English very much, but I don't like Science['sa??ns]. I want to be a teacher in the future, so I'm studying hard at school.

I'm interested in Thai culture ['k?lt??], and I love Thai food. I hope to visit Thailand one day.

I hope we can be friends. Write to me soon and tell me about yourself.

Best wishes,

Mandy

The Leaning (lean [li?n]) Tower['ta??] of Pisa

The Tower of Pisa is one of the most beautiful bell[bel] towers in Italy. It is not only beautiful, but also strange-it leans to one side. Today it is known as "the Leaning Tower of Pisa".

The building of the tower began in 1173. It took nearly ['n??l?] 200 years to complete [k?m'pli?t]. In 1178, when the building got to the third floor, it started to lean. The builders tried to make the tower straight straight [stre?t] again when they built the upper ['?p?] floors[fl??], but failed [fe?l].

Over the years, the tower has continued to (continue [k?n't?nju?])lean further ['f??e?]. Experts ['eksp??t] have done a lot of studies (study) and tried to "rescue"['reskju?] the tower. In 1990, it was closed to the public ['p?bl?k] for safety ['se?ft?] reasons['ri?z(?)n]. After a lot of effort['ef?t], it reopened[ri?'??p(?)n]in 2001. Hopefully['h??pf?l?; -f(?)l?] it will be safe for at least[li?st] the next 300 years.

A blind[bla?nd] man and his “eyes” in a fire

One day, John Dancer and Charlie arrived at a hotel [h??'tel; ??-].

“Good evening, sir,” said the receptionist[r?'sep?(?)n?st]. “You’re welcome to stay [ste?] , but I’m sorry that we don’t allow [?'la?] pets [pet] here.”

“Charlie isn’t a pet,” said John. “He’s my eyes. I’m blind and I can’t go anywhere by myself.”

The receptionist apologized (apologize [?'p?l?d?aiz])and led (lead [li?d])John and Charlie to their room.

John was very tired[ta??d]. He soon fell asleep[?'sli?p]. Some time later, Charlie

started barking[bɑ?k]. John woke up ( wake up [we?k] ) and smelt smoke. A fire! Smoke started to come in from under the door. With Charlie’s help, John put some wet[wet] towels ['ta??l] along the bottom ['b?t?m] of the door. Then he got down on the floor next to Charlie and waited.

Soon he heard the sound of a fire engine['end??n]. A fireman ['fa??m?n] arrived and got him out of the building, but the fireman did not want to take Charlie. John would not go without his “eyes”. Finally['fa?n?l?], the fireman got Charlie out of the building too and they were both safe.

A friendly ['fren(d)l?] dolphin ['d?lfin]

Last month, I went to swim in the sea. I swam really far, past the rocks [r?k] and out to sea. Then I saw something moving (move [mu?v])towards me. It was huge and grey[gre?] , with a large fin. It was a shark[?ɑ?k]! I began to swim back, but the beach[bi?t?] was too far away. The shark started to swim around me.

I was really scared [skε?d]. Suddenly another creature['kri?t??] appeared (appear [?'p??]) next to me in the water. It was a dolphin! It pushed me away from the shark. I sat on its back as it swam towards the beach.

Soon we were near the beach. The shark did not follow us. As soon as I stepped onto (step [step])the beach, the dolphin swam away. I will always remember how this friendly animal saved (save [se?v]) my life.

Trees in our daily['de?l?] lives

Rebecca wants to know more about trees and how they help us. She is interviewing ['?nt?vju?] Dr. Jones about trees.

Rebecca: How do trees help us, Dr. Jones?

Dr. Jones: They help us in many ways. They keep the air cool and clean. They take in harmful ['hɑ?mf?l; -f(?)l] gases (gas [g?s])from the air and produce[pr?'dju?s] oxygen ['?ks?d?(?)n]for us to breathe [bri?e]. They’re major['me?d??] fighters ['fa?t?] against air pollution [p?'lu??(?)n].

Rebecca: I know trees also make our lives more convenient [k?n'vi?n??nt]. Many of the things in our daily lives come from trees. For example, paper and pencils.

Dr. Jones:You are right, Rebecca. In fact, we get a lot more from trees. We get fruit and oil [??l] from them. Tea [ti?] also comes from the leaves of trees. Look around this room. A lot of the furniture['f??n?t??] is made of wood [w?d]. Trees are really important in our daily lives.

Rebecca: I can’t imagine [?'m?d??n] a world without trees.

Dr. Jones: But we cut down[k?t] millions of trees every year. We should stop doing this if we don’t want a world without trees.

The Amazon['?m?zn] rainforest ['ren'f?r?st]

The Amazon rainforest in South America is the largest rainforest in the world. It covers ['k?v?] five and a half million square[skwe?] kilometers ['k?l?,mit?] of the Amazon Basin ['be?s(?)n] and spreads [spred] across nine countries.

The Amazon rainforest is very important because it is home to thousands of animals, birds and insects ['?nsekt] . However, people are destroying[d?'str??] the area by cutting down many of the trees. This is called “deforestation” [,di,f?r?'ste??n]. Many living things ['l?v??]lose [lu?z] their homes because of deforestation[,di,f?r?'ste??n]. As a result, the number of kinds of animals, birds, insects ['?nsekt] and trees in the world is decreasing (decrease [d?'kri?s]).

We must do our best to protect [pr?'tekt] the Amazon rainforest.

Unit 5

Water talks

Dora was in the bathroom['bɑ?θru?m; -r?m]. The tap[t?p] was on.

“Turn that tap off,” said an angry voice,

“You are wasting water(waste [we?st]).”

Dora looked around, but there was no one there.

“Who are you?”

“I’m a drop of water[dr?p]. Do you know where I come from?

“From the tap?” asked Dora.

“A few days ago, I was in a cloud,” said the drop of water. “Then I dropped into a river and ran into a reservoir['rez?vwɑ: (r)]. Then it was time for people to clean me.”“Clean you?” Dora asked.

“Yes. I was dirty ['d??t?]. They cleaned me and added [?d] some chemicals['kem

?k(?)l] to me. Then I travelled through the pipes[pa?p] under the streets and now I’m here.”

Dora asked, “So is this the end of your journey ['d???n?] ?”

“No. People will make me clean again. I’ll go into a river and then into the sea again.”“Again?”

“Yes. My journey starts there. Remember not to waste[we?st] or pollute me. I’m valuable ['v?lj?b(?)l].”

Dora turned tap off and came out of the bathroom.

Facts [f?kt] about water

Here are some interesting facts about water:

About 70% of the human body ['b?d?] is water.

Oceans ['???(?)n] cover['k?v?] about 75% of the Earth, but ocean water is salty ['s?lti].

Therefore ['ee?f??] most of the water in the world is not drinkable['dr??k?bl]. Groundwater ['gra?nd'w?t?] may be drinkable, but it is not easy to find groundwater that is clean and safe to drink.

If water drips[dr?p] from your tap every 10 seconds['sek(?)nd], you will waste about 315 liters ['lit?r] of water a year—enough to fill [f?l] two baths [bɑ?θ]!

Having a bath uses about twice[twa?s] as much water as taking a shower ['?a??] . Having a shower instead of [?n'sted] a bath can save [se?v] up to 400 liters ['lit?r] a week.

Unit 6

Electricity [?'l?k'tr?s?ti] all around

One eveing, Daisy said, “I’m going to buy a packet of['p?k?t] sweets [swi?t]. Does anyone want anything?”

Benny, Daisy’s brother, replied(reply [r?'pla?]), “Can you get me a packet of electricity?”

“Yes, I can,” said Daisy. Then she went out.

Benny laughed, “She can’t buy electricity in packets like 像sweets! She’ll look foolish['fu?l??].”

Mum said, “You mustn’t say that, Benny!”

“What do you know about electricity, Benny?” Dad asked.

“Electricity gives us power['pa??]. It flows[fl??] through wires [wa??]. It’s like water, in a way,” said Benny.

“You’re right! Electricity comes into our flat[fl?t] through thin wires[wa??]. These are connected to [k?'nekt] cables['ke?b(?)l] under the street,” Dad added.

“What are the cables connected to?” a sked Benny.

“They are connected to a power station['ste??(?)n],” answered Dad.

A moment later, Daisy came back.

“May I have my packet of electricity?” Benny asked.

“Here you are!” said Daisy.

“But…these are batteries(battery ['b?t(?)r?])!” said Benny.

“Daisy’s right,” said Dad. “The chemicals['kem?k(?)l]inside batteries produce [pr?'dju?s] electricity.”

Mum said, “Who looks foolish now, Benny?”

Unit1 Great explorations The voyages of Zheng He Zheng He was a famous Chinese explorer. In 1405, he set off from China on the first of seven great voyages. This was nearly a century before Christopher Columbus first set sail on his journey of discovery to America. His travels were so important that they are still studied today. Zheng He was born in Yunnan in 1371. He rose to become a trusted official of the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The emperor ordered Zheng He to visit and explore the lands outside China. His task was to develop relations and set up trade routes with foreign countries. In a few years, he built a great fleet of ships, the biggest in the world at that time. The ships were known as treasure ships. They were big enough to carry 25,000 people as well as very large quantities of goods. From 1405 to 1433, Zheng He went on seven trips and visited South-East Asia, the Middle East and even the east coast of Africa. It seemed that nowhere was too far for him to visit. These voyages allowed China to trade valuable goods like gold, silver and silk. At the end of each voyage, Zheng He returned with many things that were seen in China for the first time, such as a giraffe from Africa. Besides developing trade, the voyages also encouraged the exchange of cultures and technologies. They helped the development of those countries and regions. Zheng He died in 1433 during his last voyage. However, his voyages were such a huge achievement that people still remember him as a pioneer in opening up cultural contacts between different peoples around the world.

EG1:(11长宁)These days, it is ______ for children as young as Sammy to be so good at computers. Many Children use computers at home or at school and some schools even have their own websites. EG2:(13长宁) If you have no mobile phone, no computer, and no Internet with you, what will you do with your free time? Will you go ____80____?
