The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the damp cold of Dennis’s Swamp (沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accep ted Jack’s dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.

“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name ? ”

“Are you sure you want to hear it ? It’s a scary story,” warned Jack.

“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you wouldn’t have chosen this place!”

“Ok, but don’t say I didn’t warn you,” said Jack, and he began this tale.

“Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in . In those days, the area looked quite different ---- it was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystal-clear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice.

“ ‘You are clearing too much land, ’ warned one old man. ‘ The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it. ’

“ ‘ Silly fool,’ said Dennis to himself. ‘If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. I’ll become wealthier. He’s just jealous!’”

“Dennis continued to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.”

“What happened ? ” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.

“The land hit back ---- just as the ol d man warned, ” Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared. Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater. His body was never found.”

“What a stupid story, ” laughed Tom. “Plants can’t …” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted(晕倒). The other two boys jumped up with fright, staring at Tom. Suddenly, they burst out laughing. Some green swamp ivy (常春藤) had covered Tom’s face. It was a while before Tom could appreciate the joke.

When international aid is given, steps must be taken to ensure (确保)that the aid reaches the people for whom it is intended. The way to achieve this may not be simple. It is very difficult for a nation to give help directly to people in another nation. The United Nations Organization(UNO) could undertake to direct the distribution of aid. Here however rises the problem of costs. Also tied with this is time. Perhaps the UNO could set up a body of devoted men and women is every country who can speedily distribute aid to victims of floods and earthquakes.

More than the help that one nation can give to another during a disaster, it would be more effective to give other forms of help during normal times. A common proverb says, “Give me a fish and I eat for a day, teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime.” If we follow this w ise saying, it would be right to teach people from less developed nations to take care of themselves. For example, a country could share its technology with another. This could be in simple areas like agriculture or in more complex areas like medical and health care or even in building satellites. Even small country is able to help less developed nations. Sometimes what is take for granted, like the setting up of a water purification plant or the administration of a school, could be useful for countries which are looking about to solve common problems. It does not cost much to share such simple things. Exchange students could be attached for a number of months or years and learn the required craft while on the site. They can then take their knowledge back to their homelands and if necessary come back form time to time to clear doubts or to update themselves. Such aid will be truly helpful and there is no chance of it being temporary or of it falling into the wrong hands.

Many countries run extensive courses in all sorts of skills. It will not cost much to include deserving foreigners in these courses. Besides giving effective help to the countries concerned, there is also the build-up of friendships to consider. Giving direct help by giving materials may be effective in the short run and must continue to be given in the event of emergencies. However, in the long run what is really effective would be the sharing of knowledge.

46. According to the author, how could international aid reach the victims in time ?

A. By solving the cost problems

B. By solving the transportation problems

C. By setting up a body of devoted people in every country.

D. By relying on the direct distribution of the UNO.

47. What does the author try to express in the underlined sentence?

A. Providing food is vital

B. Learning to fish is helpful

C. Teaching skills is essential

D. Looking after others is important.

48. The second paragraph is developed mainly _________.

A. by example

B. by process

C. by comparison

D. by contrast

49. Which aid is likely to fall into the wrong hands ?

A. A medical team.

B. An exchange program.

C. A water plant.

D. Financial support.

50. What can we infer about international aid from the passage ?

A. It is facing difficulties.

B. It is unnecessary during normal times

C. It should be given in the form of materials

D. It has gained support developed countries

C.

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours(绕行路)in life that by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But I as quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.

For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents’ home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do the fastest, shortest easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hates confinement(限制)and have strong opinions about everything.

Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.

But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.

That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They’d get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.

We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons(见识).

We eventually arrived at my parents’doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories

I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.

Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of a journey----and the best part of yourself.

51.Why did the author use to take freeways to her parents’home?

A. It was less time

B. It would be faster and safer

C. Her kids would feel less confined

D. She felt better with other drivers nearby

52.The author stopped regularly on the country roads to ______.

A. relax in the fresh air

B. take a deep breath

A. Freeways are where beauty hides.

B. Getting close to nature adds to the joy of life

C. Enjoying the beauty of nature benefits one’s health

D. One should follow side roads to watch wild animals

54.Why did the author ask the kids to get out of the car on their way back home?

A. To give herself some time to read

B. To order some food for them

C. To play a game with them.

D. To let them cool down

55.What could be the best title for the passage?

A. Charm of the Detour

B. The Road to Bravery

C. Creativity out of Necessity

D. Road trip and Country Life

D.

When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.

For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved(毫不掩饰的).

In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it’s conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.

In adulthood the things that bring deep joy----love, marriage, birth----also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated(复杂的)

My definition for happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more we can enjoy what we hav e, the happier we are. It’s easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even goo health.

I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable le isure time and satisfying work. I don’t think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.

We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we’ve got to have. We’ve so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it’s making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren’t necessarily happier

Happiness isn’t about what happens to us----it’s about how we see what happens to us. It’s the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but enjoying what w e do possess.

56. As people grow older, they ______.

A. feel it harder to experience happiness

B. associate their happiness less with others

C. will take fewer risks in pursuing happiness

D. tend to believe responsibility means happiness

57. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 5 and 6?

A. She cares little about her own health

B. She enjoys the freedom of traveling

C. She is easily pleased by things in daily life

D. She prefers getting pleasure from housework

58. What can b inferred from Paragraph 7?

A. Psychologists think satisfying work is key to happiness

B. Psychologists’opinion is well proved by Grandma’case

C. Grandma often found time for social gatherings

D. Grandma’s happiness came from modest expectations of life

59. People who equal happiness with wealth and success ______.

A. consider pressure something blocking their way

B. stress their right to happiness too much

C. are at a loss to make correct choices

D. are more likely to be happy

60. What can be concluded from the passage?

A. Happiness lies between the positive and the negative

B. Each man is the master of his own fate

C. Success leads to happiness

D. Happy is he who is content

Good afternoon, everyone.

Welcome to our school! High school students are faced with a choice between arts and science. It was not an easy choice for me to make. After careful consideration, though, I decided on science as my main subject of study. The reasons are as follows.

First, science graduates are in greater demand than arts ones in China. Second, the science major can help me achieve my childhood dream of becoming a scientist. Third, my parents wish me to study science at college because they believe I will have a brighter future as a science student. Last but not least, my physics teacher is my role model, whose influence on me had a lot to do with my decision.

It is for these reasons that I finally made my choice.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Guide dogs enjoy their work very much, and they get a lot of satisfaction from a job well done, but there is no room for typical dog fun during the work day. Games, treats and praise distract the dog from helping its handler navigate (指引方向) the course. Even when the handler doesn’t need assistance, a guide dog on the job is trained to ignore distractions and keep still. This is because a guide dog must be able to come to handler’s workplace or be in public places without creating a disturbance(干扰).

When you see a guide dog on the job, it is extremely important that you recognize that it is at work. Petting or talking to the dog spreads its concentration, which weakens the handler’s ability to get around in his or her surroundings. People are very impressed with guide dogs and so we have a natural inclination(倾向)to praise them, but the best thing you can do to help a guide dog is to leave it alone so that it can pay attention to its surroundings and maintain its focus on its handler. Guiding is very complicated, and it requires a dog’s undivided attention.

When a guide dog gets home at the end of the day, however, it will play and soak up praise just like an ordinary pet. Guide dogs make the difference between work and play based on their lead harness(牵狗用的皮带):When the harness is on, they must stay completely focused---- when it comes off, it’s play time. Guide dogs work very hard every day, but they lead extremely happy lives, full of lots of attention and stimulation.

Working as a guide dog requires good physical and mental shape, so guide dogs typically retire just before they enter old age. Retirement is usually at age 8 or 10; but some work for a little longer, and some guide dogs retire earlier if they’re having trouble with the work.

21. What do you think is the typical job of a guide dog?

When we hear of dangerous diseases, cancer and heart disease are often what first come

to mind. Recently, a virus called Ebola has reappeared in Guinea, killing 62 people so far. It leads to high fever, bleeding and so on. Ebola can kill 90% of those infected (感染), especially in underdeveloped societies like those in Africa.

Ebola is named after the Ebola River, where it was first discovered in 1976. There are five different types of the Ebola virus, each named after where they first happened Sudan, Ivory Coast, Reston, Bundibugyo, and aire. The deadliest of the five, aire, was responsible for the 2012 outbreak, and is believed to be attacking Guinea.

Ebola is naturally found in fruit bats, which pass on the virus to other animals by biting or sucking on their blood. Humans who are suffering from the Ebola infection might have touched the bodily fluids (体液) of the infected animals. Once infected, a human becomes a carrier of the deadly virus.

Since we live in an interconnected world, where the situation in one country can affect us all, the effects of Ebola are huge damaging trade relations, affecting foreign visitors, and weakening entire countries. Already the Guinea virus is spreading fast with a few cases spotted in Conakry—the capital city of Guinea, far away from the origin of the virus. It is feared that the disease may have already reached neighboring Liberia and Sierra Leone, too.

Unfortunately, there are no disease-specific treatments for Ebola. Healthcare workers only supply the infected people with water to keep them in good condition. Since there have been many cases of nurses catching the disease from patients, they are forced to wear strict protective clothes, and in some cases, not even allowed to get close to the infected. The fact that there is no cure for the Ebola virus is what makes the outbreak a challenging one to control.

There is an English saying “ Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the

saying very seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to study laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found facts that laughter really can improve people’s health.

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reducing the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produce pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produce pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group which tolerated(忍受) the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce endorphins in the brain. These are natural chemicals which diminish both stress and pain.

There is also some fact to suggest that laughter helps the body’s immune system, that is, the system which fights infection. In an experiment, one group of students watched a funny video while another group of students served as the control group ---- in other words, a group with which to compare the first group. Doctors checked the blood of the students in both groups and found that the people in the group that watch the video had an increase in the activity of their white blood cells, that is, the cells which fight infection.

As a result of these discoveries, some doctors and psychiatrists in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they try to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh.

They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

33. It can be learnt from the passage that laughter can_______.

A. make people feel younger

B. cha nge people’s habits

C. improve peoples health

D. make people love their lives

34. Smiling can produce____.

A. more effects than laughter

B. the same effects as laughter

C. less effects on the human body

D. no effects on the human body

35. The main idea of this passage is that ______.

A. there are several ways of studying the benefits of laughter

B. laughter and physical exercise have the same effects on human body

C. the doctors should learn how to make people laugh

D. tests show that laughter can produce beneficial effects on human body

Think for a moment about the teachers you’ve had at junior or senior high school. Which one did you like best? And why? Were the teachers you liked best also the ones who were the best teachers, in your opinion? __36__And then begin to read further.

Some very common answers to this question are that teachers need to love their students, that they need to have expert knowledge of their subjects and that they should devote themselves completely to their work. All of these ideas are, of course, true to a certain extent.__37__ It’s impossible for anyone to love everyone he knows, and teachers deal with a very large number of students over the years. On the other hand, teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they’re interested in them as people. __38__ A deep knowledge of the subject is especially important.__39__ That’s to say, a teacher needs to be trained in the skills of teaching. These skills include how to control a class. Finally, teachers have to devote a lot of time and energy to their work, of course. However, because they’re also models that their students must follow, it’s important that they should be well-balanced people with interests outside their school work—families, friends, hobbies, etc. __40__

A.They’re perhaps a little too simple.

B.Students ask too much from teachers.

C.Well- qualified teachers should be educated and capable.

D.Consider for a minute the qualities that make a teacher outstanding.

E. A teacher who only lives for work is likely to become narrow-minded.

F.Equally important is the ability to pass that knowledge on to the students effectively.

G.They also pay attention to the development of both their brains and their characters.

Apparently, the traditional way of study students read books and take notes in pen is still the choice by most students. Computers or phones usage is supposed to do harm to eyesight, which is the reason why a small number of students choose. As far as I am concerned, if used properly, all these means of study can benefit us.

It was a Sunday in March and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm,

On approaching them, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. The storm must have driven them 28 the ocean into the bay, in which the 29 water was so badly polluted that nothing could 30 .

Slowly, they let 38 lead them. Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight from the sea, the mum gave us a 39 with her tail and off they swam into the distance.

That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. Nearly four decades later, I still 40 fondly to that golden day at sea.
