But it's not that unrealistic, with th e development of China’s high-speed railway system. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia , and finally Eastern Europe.China is planning to extend(延长) its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore. If China’s plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could rush from London t o Beijing within two days. The new system would stillfollow China’s high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 34 6 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes. China’s bullet train(高速列车), the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has th e World’s fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours.Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as saf et y and maintenance(保养) of railway tracks. So, it’s important to pay attention to ever y detail. But the key issue is really money. China is already sp ending hundreds of billions of yuan on longer railway construc tionChina prefers thatthe other countries provide natural resources rather than finan cial investment. Resources from those countries could flood in to China to support development. It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will certai nly create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on, not to mention the better communication am ong those countries. For China, such a project would not only connect it with the re st of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far w est. We predict that in the coming decades, millions of people will move to the western parts, where the land is empty and re sources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west. And they’ll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.8. According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is.A. financial problemsB. safety of the systemC. technical issuesD. m aintenance of railway tracks9. China and the countries involved will get much-needed resourcesB. China and the countries involved will benefit from the proje ct in various waysC. China will develop its railway system and communication with othe r countriesD. the foreign countries involved will develop their railway tran sportation, business and tourism11. Which of the following might be the best title for the passa ge?A. International Railway NetworkB. High-speed Bullet TrainsC. Big Railway DreamsD.New Railway StandardsDI heard many parents complaining that their teenage childrenare rebelling(叛逆). I suggested they recall their own teenage years. At that a ge they would like to be growing away from parents. They pre ferred to stand on their own two feet. But take a good look at t he present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the sa me way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Inste ad of going out fighting bravely on their own, most of them are clutching (紧握) at one another’s hands for reassurance. They declare they want to dress as they like. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up gathering around listening to the sa me record. Their reason for thinking or acting in a similar way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their coco on (蚕茧) into a larger cocoon. It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up a gainst the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Indu stry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days ever y teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenage r should have and be. And many of today’s parents have com e to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All th is create a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical musicinstead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks wh en everyone else is collecting records. You may have some th oughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmat es. Well, go for it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Fin ally his leg would have to be amputated (截) below the knee (膝盖).Such a setback(挫折) could have easily ended the career of a less tough(坚强) person, but Ruggiero, who has been dancing since he w as five, now puts the experience into his performance. It seemed like the world turned upside down; just last w eek my grandmother had passed away. I felt like I couldn’t get my feet on solid ground. That’s when my sister, Ella, came down the stairs with her lon g brown hair freshly washed. She sat next to me and smiled. In his eagerne ss to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down i n large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had.Several thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut d own its trees to build warships(战舰), with which to gain itself an empire(帝国). It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil becam e hard and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country f ound itself faced by floods and starvation.Even if a government realizes the importance of a plentiful su pply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade the villager to see t his. The villager wants wood to cook his food with, and he can earn money by making charcoal(木炭) or selling wood to the townsman. He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after trees. So unless the gover nment has a good system of control, or can educate the peopl e, the forests will slowly disappear. This does not only mean that the villagers? sons and grandso ns have fewer trees. The results are even more serious. For where there are trees their roots break the soil up—allowing the rain to sink in and also hold the soil, thus preventi ng it being washed away easily, but where there are no trees, the soil becomes hard and poor. The rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, causing floods and carrying a way with it the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but a worthless desert.12. What is the most important function of trees?A. Providing fuel.B. Offering shade.C. Preventing natural disasters.D. Providing wood.13. What eventually happened to the empire in paragraph 3?A. Its people died of hunger.B. It fell to pieces.C. It became a giant empire.D. It built many ships with wood.14. It is implied in the passage that the villagers .A. want a plentiful supply of treesB. want firewood badlyC. just want to get moneyD. don’t realize the importance of trees15. What is the passage mainly concerned with?A. The benefits of trees.B. Trees and soil protection.C. The various uses of trees.D. Different attitudes toward trees.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AWith exams just around the corner, now is a good time to explore some of UCL’slesser-known study spaces and get down to some revision. Here are some good choices for you.UCL Senate House HubUCL Senate House Hub opened in 2015 and provides 144 study spaces. What’s more, you can check how many spaces are available online before you head to the hub! Located on the third floor of the South Block of Senate House, the center has room for individual and group study in traditional library spaces, as well as casual armchairs and bar-style desks.UCL Eastman Dental LibraryThe newly refurbished(翻新的) UCL Eastman Dental Library is located halfway along Gray’s Inn Road and is open from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am–8:00 pm. The library has 72 study spaces, and many IT facilities are available. The library also has a study room for meetings and a computer room with an interactive whiteboard.UCL Language & Speech Science LibraryUCL Language & Speech Science Library (LaSS) has disabled access and has recently been refurbished to add extra study spaces. With only 49 spaces, LaSS is smaller than most other UCL Libraries and tends to fill up relatively quickly, so get there early to avoid disappointment.Senate House LibraryThis one may be cheating as the Senate House Library is not technically a UCL library. However, all UCL students and staff can register for free membership online. With millions of books and journals, Senate House Library offers some places a little less used by UCL students but perfect for getting down to some hard work.1. LaSS may be the smallest one among the four libraries.BKathy Fletcher and David Simpson have a son named Santi. He had a friend who sometimes went to school hungry. So Santi invited him to occasionally eat and sleep at his house. That friend had a friend and that friend had a friend, and now when you go to dinner at Kathy and David’s house on Thursda y night there might be 15 to 20 teenagers gathering around the table, and later there will be groups of them crashing in the basement or in the few small bedrooms upstairs. The kids who show up at Kathy and David’s have suffered the pains of modern poverty: homelessness, hunger, abuse. And yet by some miracle, hostile soil has produced beautiful flowers. Kids come from around the city. Spicy chicken and black rice are served. Cellphones are banned. The kids who call Kathy and David “Momma” and “Dad,” are p olite and clear the dishes. Birthdays and graduations are celebrated. Songs are performed. Each meal we go around the table and everybody has to say something nobody else knows about them. Each meal the kids show their promise to care for one another. The adults in this community give the kids the chance to present their gifts. “At my first dinner, Edd read a poem that I first thought was from Langston Hughes, but it turned out to be his own. Kesari has a voice that somehow appeared from New Orleans jazz from the 1920s. Madeline and Thalya practice friendship as if it were the highest art form.”“They give us a gift —complete intolerance of social distance. When I first met Edd, I held out my hand to shake his. He looked at it and said, ‘We hug here,’ and we’ve been hugging since.”Bill Milliken, a veteran youth activist, is often asked which programs turn around kids’ lives. “I still haven’t seen one program change one kid’s life,” he says. “What changes people is relationships. Somebody is willing to walk through the shadow of the valley of adolescence with them.” Souls are not saved in packs. Love is the necessary force.5. Why do kids come to Kathy and David’s house on Thursdays?A. To help the homeless at first hand.B. To experience the feeling of home.C. To learn about the modern poverty.D. To plant beautiful flowers in poor soil.6. Why isn’t the use of cell phones allowed at Thursday dinners?A. Kids need to tell stories about themselves.B. Kids are expected to care more for each other.C. Kids have to do house chores around the home.D. Kids prepare songs for birthdays and graduations.7. What gift did the writer get at a Thursday dinner?A. The practice of the art form.B. The pleasure of enjoying jazz.C. The chance to listen to poems.D. The zero distance between souls.8. What does Bill mean in his words?A. Love is the power to change a kid’s life.B. Money is needed to start programs for kids.C. A program can change a group of kid’s lives.D. Kids change their relationships in a program.CDo you like eating processed meat? If you do, think twice now if you want to eat such meat for the sake of your health. Why? It’s because eating processed meat can cause cancer, World Health Organization (WHO) experts said last Monday.Processed meat is the meat that has been preserved by salting, smoking, drying or canning. Experts from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France studied 800 patients. The experts connected processed meat, such as hot dogs and bacon, with at least three kinds of cancer. A person who eats 50 grams of processed meat per day—about two pieces of bacon—increases his or her risk of bowel(肠) cancer by 18 percent. The IARC has included processed meat in its Group 1 list, for which there is “enough evidence” of connection with cancer. Tobacco is also on the Group 1 list.WHO experts also say red meat, including beef, lamb and pork, is “probably” carcinogenic (致癌的) to humans. Dr. Kurt Strait is with the IARC. He said in a statement that the risk of cancer increases with the amount of meat a person eats. Health experts in some countries advised against eating large amounts of red and processed meat. But those suggestions had been centered on the increased risk of heart disease and obesity. However, meat industry groups protest the result of the WHO study. They say that meat is part of a balanced diet. They also say the causes of cancer are broad, and include environment and lifestyle factors. The WHO report cites the Global Burden of Disease project, which shows that diets high in processed meat lead to 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide.9. It can be inferred that the items on the Group 1 list of the IARC ________.A. are all processed foodsB. aren’t often eaten by peopleC. can be the most dangerous to humansD. can greatly increase the risk of cancer10. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites from the soil.Kenton Lee, an American man invented The Shoe That Grows. He exp lains, “It grows in three places: the front, on the side and on the back. It can last up to five years. The bottom is rubber like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather. ”Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya. “I just remember a little girl who wore a pair of small shoes. The shoes were so small that she had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I just remember thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?”However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality. Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise.A pair of shoes, he says, gives more than protection. It gives a child self-worth and more chances to succeed. “Because it's a small thing that really does make a big difference to keep them healthy and happy and having more chances to succeed. ”Kenton Lee adds that his goal is to help get The Shoe That Grows to as many children as he can around the world.12. There are two separate areas in Santiago. There is an area for the very rich people and there is a part for the poor people. I come from the poor side of the city. In the early 1900s, the drivers were the same people who invented and built the first passenger cars. For example, Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, sometimes raced his cars. In 1906, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was founded by Carl Fisher. On August 19, 1909, the first car race took place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Twelve thousand were in attendance. In 1911, the first Indianapolis 500 was held there with 40 racers. Finishing in 6 hours and 42 minutes, first-place winner Ray Harroun clocked in at what seemed back in those days an unbelievably high average speed of 74.59 mph!Over the years, as technology improved, these cars became lighter and faster. There are two kinds of open-wheel racecars, IndyCars and Formula One. IndyCars are almost exactly identical(完全相同的) to each other, so the race is a test of driving skills around a street, or race course, mostly in the U.S.; Formula One cars are customized(定做的) and raced on road courses around the world. Unlike the kind of car your family drives, neither IndyCars or F1 cars have doors, and their wheels are on the outside of the car’s body.In 1936, Louis Meyer asked for a bottle of buttermilk after he became the first three-time Indy 500 winner, which led to the tradition of winners drinking a bottle of milk on Victory Lane(车道).The Indy 500 has grown into one of the most anticipated(期待的) international racing events of the year, with hundreds of thousands of fans flooding into the stands each May. Scientists say she probably died of lung disease when she was in her 40s---about 2,000 years ago---in Egypt. They even have a model of her skull(头骨). Based on that, an artist was sure how she may have looked when she was alive. And yet, the mummy’s coffin has never been opened. Instead, scientists used a machine called a CT scanner(扫描仪) to look inside.CT scanners were developed to help doctors examine patients. But the machines turned out to be perfect for studying mummies, too.“A hundred years ago, scientists would usually open mummies’ coffins. This did a great deal of harm to those mummies,” say AMNH president Ellen V. Futter. “We just don’t do that anymore. We can do so much better. By using CT scanners, scientists can know about an ancient person’s diet from some of a mummy’s hair. Pieces of bone can show who was related to whom.”Some mummies in Peru were buried with a skull hanging from their neck. Scientists thought these mummies wore the skull of an enemy. But DNA evidence showed that the mummies were buriedwith the skull of an ancestor(祖先).The 19 mummies in the show are from Egypt and Peru. They had completely different reasons for mummifying the dead. The ancient Egyptians believed that mummification allowed an ancestor to live on in the next world. The people who prepared the Gilded Lady thought she would continue to see, hear, and smell. In ancient Peru, people practiced mummification to stay connected with their ancestors. Some families kept mummies in their home.Futter calls the mummies in the show “messengers from another time.” With the help of technology, scientists will continue to uncover mummies’ secrets so we can understand it.32.What did scientists find about the Gilded Lady?A.She was a great artist.B.She died a natural death.C.She lived in ancient Egypt.D.She had an amazingly long life.33.What do Futter’s words suggest?A.Pieces of bone show a person’s diet.B.CT scanners do great harm to mummies.C.Mummies usually wore the skull of an enemy.D.Technology plays an important role in mummy studies.34.Why did the ancient Peruvians make mummies?A.To do traditional medical research.B.To keep close ties with their relatives.C.To help their families live a better life.D.To let their ancestors live in another world.35.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?A.The technology.B.Their message.C.Their family.D.The show.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
