Nanyang Technological University offers a four year degree for Digital Animation, Digital Filmmaking, Interactive Media, and Visual Communication. NTU also offers undergraduate scholarships and even reaches out to international exchange students as well as local exchange students. Be sure to look into their tuition information and financial assistance opportunities.

99. Frameboxx. Mumbai, India.

This school’s curriculum hasn’t kept up with the evolving entertainment industry as much as other schools on this list, but its degree programs still offer tried and tested courses in 3D animating, VFX, video editing, and compositing. One of its best perks is that it offers animation and visual effects programs that run from one month to over a year, so that you can customize your education to meet your needs.

98. Hongik University. Seoul, South Korea.

Known as most students by its “Hongdae” nickname, Hongik has a variety of options for students interested in the game or film industry. Their School of Games focuses on just the game industry software but also has students dabble in programming, which many students don’t wish to learn. If that’s you, then you should instead browse their College of Design & Arts which

offers many degree specialties. For those more interested in the film industry, it also offers a Graduate School of Film & Digital Media.

97. Games Academy. Berlin and Frankfurt, Germany.

This school started in 2000 with the goal of being one of Germany’s first accredited colleges for game design degrees. They currently offer Game Art & Animation and Film Art & Animation, and its site has a PDF download for more details on each. Tuition for those two programs are €795 per month but their school also offers degrees in game design, game production, and game programming. Make sure you read their application rules before applying though!

96. Dun Laoghaire College of Art, Design and Technology. South County Dublin, Ireland.

I’ll be honest: this school’s BA (Honours) in Animation program is not for the student who wants a very focused degree. Instead, this school offers an array of education spread across several subjects and can prepare graduates enough for a career in any visual arts career path without having a clear cut mastery of any single branch. Because of that, this four year program is only €1,000 a year.

95. Camera Obscura School of Art. Tel Aviv, Israel.

The school itself was founded in 1978, but the animation department was formed in 1992 and was the first of its kind in the country! It has a four year animation program and spans traditional animation methods as well as today’s best software including Photoshop, Flash, Premiere, Maya, and A fter Effects. Fourth year students will be required to make an animated film so start planning now!

94. Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Jerusalem, Israel.

Its Screen-Based Arts Department helps students learn both film and animation procedures and you can look through pages and pages of course overviews for the classes that you can expect to take there. While they offer plenty of 3D animation classes, they do not have a focus on the game industry, but maybe your 3D animated short film could get added to their pages of award winners since 2006!

93. Nayzak Animation School. Cairo, Egypt

Many of Egypt’s animation schools have disbanded in recent years, and in their place sprung up Nayzak. This is a newer animation school and because of that it doesn’t have a large staff ye t, but their courses are very straightforward. They have a single 2D degree, a single 3D degree, and several small specialization courses that they also offer students. Curriculum for all programs span topics including drawing, animating, concepts of character design, lighting, and other elements of design.

92. SAE Institute Vienna. Vienna, Austria.

The SAE chain of schools began with a sin gle “School of Audio Engineering” in Australia that gained popularity quickly and expanded to various technology-based degrees before spreading to locations throughout dozens of countries around the world. SAE Vienna (SAE Wien) opened in 1987, but I’m

con vinced it hasn’t expanded and updated their curriculum as much as the other SAE Institutes have over the past decades. Its Digital Film & Animation degree looks like it only offers barebones crash courses on how to 3D animate in a single semester, and its Game Arts & 3D Animation degree looks comparable to many 3D animation programs from a decade ago. However, it is a two year degree program so that is a nice perk for potential students. Keep reading to see better SAE Institutes higher on this list.

91. 9Zeros. Barcelona, Spain.

With a name like that for a school, you know it’s got to be bold and hip with the times, right? It’s been open for over ten years and unlike many of the schools on this list it even offers classes and training in traditional 2D animation. It also covers 3D animation, stop motion animation, storyboarding, and every other class you’ll need to help start your animation c areer.

90. Babelsberg Film School. Berlin, Germany.

They offer a degree for Digital Film Design - Animation / VFX (BA) through the Media Design Hochschule tha t runs seven semesters and costs €849 monthly after an enrollment fee of €450. After teaching the fundamentals and theory of animation, anatomy, body language, and matte painting, their courses then branch out to 3D animation, project management, advanced animations, VFX supervising, post production, and other VFX focuses.

89. University of South Australia. Adelaide, Australia.

Just because you’re not an amazing artist doesn’t mean you can’t bec ome one. Likewise, just because you’re not great with computers doesn’t mean you can’t overcome your hurdles. For those of you in Australia who want to take your first steps into the exciting world of 3D graphics and animation, this is a good school to get your feet wet. Look through the animation-related programs and see which course is the right fit for you in terms of difficulty and financial burden. Artists already versed in 3D art software will likely want a more challenging curriculum but for beginners this is a great starting place.

88. Victoria University. Melbourne, Australia.

Do you live in Australia? If so, then good news: your country is filled with animation degree programs! Out of all the programs available in this country, the quickest is probably this school’s half year Certificate IV in Interactive Digital Media. It’s offered both on campus and as online courses, and you’ll take classes on 2D and 3D computer graphics that will teach you the software that’s needed to work in the animation, VFX, and game industries.

87. Central TAFE. Australia campus locations in Perth, East Perth, Leederville, Mt. Lawley, and Nedlands.

The “Central Institute of Technology” has animation relevant degrees for both its Creative Arts programs and its IT and Interactive programs. Each of those pages list its main courses and short course certification programs. If you’re unsure if 3D animation is something you want to spend the rest of your life doing –or if you’re sure it is but need extra computer or drawing courses to improve your skills – then its short courses are there to turn your weaknesses into your strengths!

86. Ballyfermot College of Further Education. Dublin, Ireland

This school offers the following three degree programs: Animation Drawing Studies (one year), Higher National Diploma In Classical And Computer Animation (two year), and BA (Hons) Visual Media in Animation / Game Design (two year). Each has their own courses, entry requirements, portfolio guidelines, and certifications, so choose wisely!

85. Centro Experimental de Animacion at Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Córdoba, Argentina.

The Experimental Animation Center is the film and TV education department of UNC with a focus on academics in all forms of art. UNC just celebrated its 400th anniversary (wow!) and the main UNC Facebook page has a healthy following and amount of activity, but it’s the CEA Facebook page that really shows what you can expect if you enroll there. Paintings, light tables for 2D animation, clay stop motion projects, a sound recording studio, and a wall full of happy artists smiling.

84. SAE Institute Singapore. Southern Singapore.

Established in Australia in 1976, it has since branched out to over 50 schools spanning several countries. SAE Singapore was the first location to open in Asia, and it offers not just standard degrees, but also short courses and accelerated degree programs. Its programs span subjects such as Audio Engineering, Digital Film Production, Animation, and Game Programming. Animation students can expect to learn 3D modelling, character rigging, motion capture, Web design, texture art processes, 3D scenery,

storyboarding, and additional classes to prepare students for business and team environments.

83. ?kola kompjuterske grafike. Belgrade, Serbia.

In English it’s known as “Deform CG Studio” and it special izes in 3D modeling, 3D animation, visual effects, and post-production rendering. Its curriculum involves the following: 3D modeling and rendering, 3D character animation, texturing for video games, digital sculpting, simulations, fluid visual effects, compositing, and post-production interactive 3D video production.

82. National Institute of Design. Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Bengaluru, India.

These three institutes in India offer two animation degrees: a four year Animation Film Design graduate diploma, and a two and a half year Animation Film Design postgraduate diploma. Classes stick to predominantly 2D animation which is why some of its graduates have gone on to work at Nickelodeon. The courses only have fifteen seats open for each class, so be sure to reach out quickly if you’re considering this school!

81. SAE Institute Belgrade. Belgrade, Serbia.

Aspiring 3D artists in or near Serbia will be thrilled to learn that SAE Belgrade has an extensive BA/BSc (Hons) Interactive Animation program that teaches students the ins and outs of 3D modeling and animating over two years of three semesters each year. Bucharest in Romania. They offer a similar program that’s more game animation oriented and is just a one year program.

80. Southampton Solent University. Southampton, United Kingdom.

These are the programs in this school that aspiring animators should consider: MA Special Effects full-time starting at ￡8,500 per year, and for full-time starting at ￡9,000 per year you could also attend BA (Hons) Special Effects, BA (Hons) Animation, BA (Hons) Computer Generated Imagery, BA (Hons) Digital Animation, or BA (Hons) Computer and Video Games. If you’re an international student then you should look into the many services they offer, such as special English-based courses!

79. Griffith University. South Bank, Australia.

This school was founded in 1971 and eventually grew to incorporate a variety of animation-based curriculum. You can browse all of Griffith’s animation programs and decide which is best for you. Their courses span 2D, 3D, film, and games related animation degrees. Griffith University has campuses all over Australia, but the majority of the animation related programs are at the South Bank locations.

in touch with the 139 teachers on staff that help train its students. In addition, this school also offers several partnerships that can be valuable if you want to relocate, transfer course credits, or get help looking for a job or internship as graduation approaches.

77. University of Technology Sydney. Sydney and Kuring-gai,

Australia.

This school has a three year full-time Bachelors of Design in Animation, a three year full-time (also offered as six year part-time) Bachelor of Science in Games Development, and a five year full-time Bachelor of Design in Animation Bachelor of Arts in International Studies. Each of those pages has more details on tuition fees for domestic and international students as well as a list of scholarships that students in those programs are eligible for!

76. Yoobee School of Design. Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington, New Zealand.

Formerly known as NatColl Design Technology, Yoobee has a full-time Diploma of Animation and Digital Video that spans 35 or 41 weeks and is Level 5 NZQA Approved. Usually 3D animation degrees focus just on the visuals, but this school also trains its students heavily in audio post-production tasks such as recording voiceovers, editing music and voice tracks, and even creating soundtracks! Please note that while domestic students have a $6,697 tuition fee, international students will be charged $18,375.

75. SAE Institute Cape Town. Cape Town, South Africa.

This is the first SAE Institute that has been opened in Africa, and locals seeking an animation degree are in luck! Its Animation & VFX curriculum began in 2008 when the college began, and it does look a little light compared to many of the other animation schools on this list, but the core classes are definitely all there. Some of the student project renders are already impressive and indicate plenty of graduates will have what it takes to get a job in the industry. My guess is that the curriculum will change and expand quite a bit over the next few semesters so do some extra research before committing!

74. Nackademin. Stockholm, Sweden

Live in Sweden and want a six month crash course to learn everything you need to know about the visual effects industry? Great! Nackademin has exactly what you need for 75,000 kr. If that’s within your educational budget then you should read more about their Digital VFX Production program.

73. Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam. Rotterdam, Netherlands.

You can tell when a college is updated with its animation technology when its homepage is even animated! This school offers a variety of courses spread across specialties such as Graphic Design, Interactive Media, and AV & Internship. I t’s good to see schools focused on internships, and its inclusion of the newer Autodesk drawing software is promising. Potential students interested in 3ds Max can find more information about its courses and workshops here.

72. University of Portsmouth. Portsmouth, England.

This school’s BA (Hons) Animation program is a three year degree. Domestic students pay ￡9,000 each year in tuition while international students pay ￡11,600 annually. The first year covers the fundamentals of art and animation while the second year focuses on the more advanced 2D animation techniques. Then in the third and final year they introduce students to 3D animations. This is a school for someone who knows they want to be proficient in 2D animation but still isn’t sure if they want to follow a career in 3D animation.

71. Deakin University Australia. Australia campuses at Melbourne Burwood, Geelong Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront, and Warrnambool.

Deakin splits its courses into two focuses: Animation Bachelors and Animation and Motion Capture Bachelors. Degrees in both areas train students in areas such as in 2D, 3D, CGA, stop-motion animation, character rigging, motion capture, and digital production workflows so that they can go on to get jobs in the games industry, in film and television, in media departments across most industries, and as independent practitioners.

70. Australian National University. Canberra, Australia.

ANU offers six different programs for aspiring animation students to choose from. Five are graduate degrees and range from half a year to two years in length, whereas their Bachelor of Visual Arts is an undergraduate degree that’s three years full-time for $25,984 for international students. Before making up your mind be sure to also browse their grants page for possible financial opportunities.

69. Raffles College of Design and Commerce. North Sydney, Australia.

The Raffles Digital Media education program spans Animation, Games Design, Multimedia Design, and New Media and Digital Film. Each of those degree paths are six semesters over three years full-time, but the first thing you should know is that all bachelor degrees offered by Raffles College of Design and Commerce include a compulsory internship component which connects our programs to the industry. Fantastic!

68. Digital Hollywood University. Tokyo, Japan.

Digital Hollywood University (DHU) is a four year university where students can study in the areas of anime, game, computer graphics, film, Web design, and graphic design. 67. SAE Institute Dubai. Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Similar campuses in the Middle East: SAE Qatar, SAE Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and SAE Amman in Jordan.

For those seeking semi-animation related off-shoot degrees, SAE Dubai offers specialties in film and motion graphics/compositing, but its video game degree is strictly programming oriented, which is actually a nice bonus. That’s because they completely stripped the 3D animation from the game degree to let students decide which side of the game industry they choose to

dive into. Those who pick the game degree can use it to get other programming related jobs, whereas the animators can more easily seek a career in any 3D animation industry and not be limited to game related software and abilities. Another perk is that – being in the affluent area of Dubai – the campus looks pretty darn new and impressive. However, please note that the animation program is an Honors setup, and that some students who apply will be rejected after consideration.

66. Universidad Veritas. San José, Costa Rica.

Since its name equates to the “university of truth”, what’s the truth behind its Digital Animation degree? The best way to show the truth is by showing off its graduates’ art galleries to prove its great value. Its curriculum has all the drawing and design classes that are needed to improve artists, and eleven semesters take students through nine main animation class gauntlets. This small country’s small school packs quit e the big punch!

65. SAE Institute Berlin. Other campuses in Germany: SAE Berlin, SAE Bochum, SAE Cologne (SAE K?ln), SAE Frankfurt, SAE Hamburg, SAE Leipzig, SAE Munich, (SAE München), and SAE Stuttgart.

While Germany’s SAE Institutes offer robust programs for Digital Film & VFX and Game Art & 3D Animation, they do not at this time offer programs for 2D animation or non-gaming related 3D animation. The game program would still teach students many of the key software packages needed for any form of 3D animation, but would also involve a lot of classes not desired for strictly 3D animators in the growing animated film industry. As for the VFX degree, it would help, but would focus more on scenery and special effects than actual character animation.

64. Swinburne University of Technology. Hawthorn, Australia.

Swinburne has a full-time three year degree for both Bachelor of Film and Television (Animation) as well as Bachelor of Design (Digital Media Design). They also have a one year full-time Diploma of Digital and Interactive Games program that can be taken after completing the Certificate IV in Digital and Interactive Games program. Potential students should read more information about their tuition fees.

63. SAE Institute Chennai. Other campuses in India: SAE Bangalore, and SAE Mumbai.

Residents of India looking to break into the animation industry will be glad to know their country offers three different SAE Institute campuses. All three of the SAE India campuses offer a 12 month Animation & VFX degree. Boasting more of a VFX focus than some of its SAE locations elsewhere in Asia, these campuses open students up to a wider array of career options after graduation. 62. SAE Institute Amsterdam. Amsterdam, Netherlands.

This SAE branch opened its doors in 1991 and has grown its animation program considerably well in the past few decades. Want to learn 3D animation to specialize in VFX in movies? No problem; its Digital Film Making course has what you need. Just want to dive right into the 3D animation and learn as much as possible in 24 weeks and then start looking for jobs? Their 3D Animation short course is perfect for that. Do you instead want to get involved with the game industry through animation or other artistic skills?

This school specializes in that category and has lengthy and challenging options for you in its Interactive Animation programs. Not enough? Then check out the SAE Rotterdam school that’s not too far away!

61. La Poudrière. Valence, France.

This premiere graduate school is for artists who already know the basics and aspire to learn the most advanced 2D animation techniques in the industry. With a focus in animation film directing, it tasks students to work with teams on larger projects. The training is a two year full-time degree. The minimum age requirement is 22 years but the annual tuition is only €1,000!

60. Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Vancouver, Canada.

This school has a few different paths to pursue in its Animation Major program. The most relevant are its courses for Animation and Computer Graphics. Instead of a set schedule of classes that you need to take each year it provides a large pool of courses for you to choose a few from and customize your learning experience to your career needs. 59. Ontario College of Art and Design. Toronto, Canada.

Known by its students and faculty as “OCAD University” this school is a little weird compared to the rest on this list. Do you want to learn 3D modeling and 3D animating but DON’T want to break into the film or game industry or any

prevailing entertainment industry? Do you dislike how 3D art is used more as a technical solution tool than as an actual artistic tool for expression? If you enjoy edgy or abstract art and want to learn 3D art to explore those and other forms of public artistic expression, then this school seems like the right shade of quirky for you. You can still use its classes to pursue more traditional 3D industries, but expect some of your classmates to be pursuing very unique paths of art!

58. LaSalle College International Vancouver. Vancouver, Canada.

A lot of schools on this list break their programs down into very specialized and focused trainings, which is usually a good thing. But what if you want to learn a wide range of 2D and 3D animation software and techniques? If that describes you then LaSalle’s 2D/3D Animation program might be ideal for you! Be warned that it’s still oriented with game design in mind so if you’re just looking for skills in animation it might not be what you’re looking for. 57. The Digital Film School. India.

2D animators, please step aside. This school is not for you, a nd it’s not even for many 3D animators, either. This school is all about the VFX industry, and if you want to be involved from the 3D side of the film industry’s special effects, then you want to consider this school. Classes take place in a 30,000 square foot post-production facility and offer students as close to a real world experience as you can find in a VFX college. Courses range from three to nine months.

56. Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication. London, United Kingdom.

The main three year full-time courses to consider are Animation BA (Hons) and Motion Graphics BA (Hons), and these cost ￡8,750 per year for domestic students or ￡10,500 per year for international students. However, they also offer one and two year programs in MA Moving Image, MA Visual Effects, MA Games Design, and MA Animation Futures. Be warned though: that last degree does involve some programming classes! All of those MA classes are about ￡8,500 for domestic students and international fees vary greatly.

55. LISAA L'Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués. Campus locations: Paris, Rennes, Nantes, and Strasbourg, France. Also New Delhi, India.

The “Higher Institute of Applied Arts (LISAA)” began in Paris in 1986 and has managed to not only stay afloat in one of the most competitive animation school centers of the world, but it even thrived and expanded to new locations in France and even one in India to meet growing demands of the booming VFX industry in India. They offer courses for artists pursuing 2D animation, 3D animation, and elements of video game design.

54. University of West England. Bristol, United Kingdom.

While the school has been open since 1970, it gained its university status in 1992. Its lengthy years are matched by its large attendance sizes: it has over 25,000 students and more than 3,000 teachers on staff! For its BA(Hons)

animation program you can either attend full-time for three years or

part-time for six years, and the tuitions vary depending on which path you prefer. Courses span both 2D and 3D animation topics, though its focus is heavier on storytelling and narratives than most animation schools.

53. SAE Institute Milano. Milano, Italy.

SAE Milano (Mailand) offers a 3D Certificate program that students can decide to complete in one year working full-time (four lessons a week during the day) or over two years (two lessons each week during the evening). Courses covered will include advanced Maya modeling, digital sculpting with Mudbox, Maya meshes, rigging and animating rigs in Maya, deformers, theories of linear and non-linear animation for the character creations, rendering, and compositing. The course then ends with a final animation project completed by a team of students! Oh, did I mention your tuition gets you a free Macbook Pro 13’ laptop from the school? Awesome!

52. Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. Dundee, Scotland.

As part of the University of Dundee, this well-known art school in the United Kingdom off ers a three year “BDes (Hons) Animation” degree that embraces both 2D and 3D animation. Students have access to their Autodesk 3D Maya labs, an animation studio, rostrum camera, and even a green screen visual effects studio! Whereas many colleges on this list focus heavily on 3D arts, this school doesn’t look like it skimps on meeting the needs of its 2D animation students!

51. University of Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.

Options! Lots of options! This school offers a wide range of animation degree options to meet your exact demands. The MA Animation degree delves into

2D and 3D animation full-time for one year or part-time for two years. Want to pry deeper into 3D animation? Then you should consider their BA (Hons) 3D Digital Animation and Modeling three year program. Don’t want to stray into the film industry? The BA (Hons) 3D Games Art & Design is a three year program for th ose who want to dive into the game industry’s animations. Want to stick to 2D animations? No problem; they also offer a three year BA (Hons) 2D Animation and Character for Digital Media!

50. SAE Institute Athens. Athens, Greece.

This school offers an immense amount of educational material packed into its 18 month 3D & Interactive Animation degree program. Courses include the normal fundamental classes that would you expect, such as drawing, anatomy, modeling, animating, environments, video editing, lighting, storyboarding, and compositing, but it also includes courses you don’t always see in 3D animation curriculum lists, such as audio editing, acting for animators, narratives in character development, character clay modeling, stop-motion animation, scripting, and an entire class based on using green screens. SAE Athens provides a computer workstation for each student in the classroom and the demand for classes apparently outweighs the number of seats each semester, so be warned that enrollment is limited and you might be put on a waiting list! If you’re stuck on a waiting list though, it also has a Game Production and Digital Film Making program for you to consider.

49. School Georges Méliès. Chateau Georges Méliès, France.

This school was previously named “EESA - Ecole Europenne Superieur

d'Animat ion” (European Graduate School of Animation) before it changed its name to honor a famous filmmaker in 2010. Not too odd. But did you know it also runs an annual contest to decide which 25 students get to take its prestigious course? Pretty odd. Better yet: the school was founded in a French castle! Whoa! Very odd, but awesome! You can read through its 3D animation course and tuition details but please note that in 2014 and 2015 it plans on phasing in additional courses!

48. SAE Institute Zürich. Zürich, Switzerland.

This college is comparable to the SAE Vienna campus in Austria in courses, but looks like it has animation programs that are more advanced. For those wanting to specialize in film and 3D visual effects, it offers the Digital Film and Animation Degree Program. Not only does it have a 3D Production program that’s strictly focused on 3D modeling and animation, but it also has a Game Art & 3D Animation Degree Program.

47. SAE Institute Jakarta. Jakarta, Indonesia.

This SAE Institute was opened in 2011 and it shows; the building is very spacious and nice looking and offers two great Interactive Animation programs. The Diploma of Screen Animation is a two year program that’s taught in both Indonesian and English and covers 2D and 3D topics and software. The BA/BSc Honors in Interactive Animation is a one year program that gives students better understandings of the 3D software packages, but be warned: it’s only taught in English currently.
