Text 1

①Of all the changes that have taken place in English-language newspapers during the past quarter-century, perhaps the most far-reaching has been the inexorable decline in the scope and seriousness of their arts coverage.

①It is difficult to the point of impossibility for the average reader under the age of forty to imagine a time when

high-quality arts criticism could be found in most big-city newspapers. ②Yet a considerable number of the most significant collections of criticism published in the 20th century consisted in large part of newspaper reviews. ③To read such books today is to marvel at the fact that their learned contents were once deemed suitable for publication in general-circulation dailies.考点分析①to the point of "到...

21. It is indicated in Paragraphs 1 and 2 that

A arts criticism has disappeared from big-city newspapers.

B English-language newspapers used to carry more arts reviews.

C high-quality newspapers retain a large body of readers.

D young readers doubt the suitability of criticism on dailies.

①? We are even farther removed from the unfocused newspaper reviews published in England between the turn of the 20th century and the eve of World War 2,at a time when newsprint was dirt-cheap and stylish arts criticism was considered an ornament to the publications in which it appeared. ②In those far-off days, it was taken for granted that the critics of major papers would write in detail and at length about the events they covered. ③Theirs was a serious business. and even those reviews who wore their learning lightly, like George Bernard Shaw and Ernest Newman, could be trusted to know what they were about. ④These men believed in journalism as a calling, and were proud to be published in the daily press. ⑤So few authors have brains enough or literary gift enough to keep their own end up in ournalism,Newman wrote, "that I am tempted to define "journalism" as "a term of contempt applied by writers who are not read to writers who are".

Even farther removed from 表明作者的惋惜之情。

22. Newspaper reviews in England before World War 2 were characterized by

A free themes.

B casual style.

C elaborate layout.

D radical viewpoints.

正确选项解析 A unfocused的英文解释:not concentrated at one point or upon one objective, free的英文解释是unrestricted,所以unfocused = free ,属于同义替换。

B 请看《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》字典对casual 的解释:(a)made or done without much care or thought; offhand 不经意的; 随便的; 马虎的; 临时的(b) (derog 贬) showing little concern; nonchalant; irresponsible 漠不关心的; 无动於衷的; 不负责任的(c) not methodical or thorough; not serious 无条理的; 不彻底的; 不认真的.这几个意思都是和②in detail and at length"详细的"③serious"严肃的"④calling"对做某项工作的强烈欲望或责任感" proud"骄傲"相矛盾的。

D radical

23. Which of the following would shaw and Newman most probably agree on?

A It is writers' duty to fulfill journalistic goals.

B It is contemptible for writers to be journalists.

C Writers are likely to be tempted into journalism.

D Not all writers are capable of journalistic writing.

Few= not all ,have brains enough or literary gift enough =capable of

①Unfortunately,these critics are virtually forgotten. ②Neville Cardus, who wrote for the Manchester Guardian from 1917 until shortly before his death in 1975, is now known solely as a writer of essays on the game of cricket.

③During his lifetime, though, he was also one of England's foremost classical-music critics, and a stylist so

widely admired that his Autobiography (1947) became a best-seller. ④He was knighted in 1967, the first music critic to be so honored. ⑤Yet only one of his books is now in print, and his vast body of writings on music is unknown save to specialists.

①Is there any chance that Cardus's criticism will enjoy a revival? ②The prospect seems remote.③Journalistic tastes had changed long before his death, and postmodern readers have little use for the richly uphostered Vicwardian prose in which he specialized. ④Moreover,the amateur tradition in music criticism has been in headlong retreat.

24. What can be learned about Cardus according to the last two paragraphs?

A His music criticism may not appeal to readers today.

B His reputation as a music critic has long been in dispute.

C His style caters largely to modern specialists.

D His writings fail to follow the amateur tradition.

注意have little use for=

not appeal to

25. What would be the best title for the text?

A Newspapers of the Good Old Days

B The Lost Horizon in Newspapers

C Mournful Decline of Journalism

D Prominent Critics in Memory

?Over the past decade, thousands of patents have seen granted for what are called business methods. received

one for its “one

One inventor patented a technique for lying a box.

-property lawyers abuzz the . court of Appeals for the federal

Now the nation’s top patent court appears completely

the case is known, is a “very big deal”, says Dennis’D Crouch of the University of Missouri School of law. It the potential to eliminate an entire class of patents.”

26. Business-method patents have recently aroused concern because of

[A] their limited value to business

[B] their connection with asset allocation

[C] the possible restriction on their granting

[D] the controversy over authorization

possible= potential ,eliminate= restriction [A] 无中生有[B] 用第一段的一

27. Which of the following is true of the Bilski case?

[A] Its ruling complies with the court decisions

[B] It involves a very big business transaction

[C] It has been dismissed by the Federal Circuit

[D] It may change the legal practices in the .

[B] 是从原文“ a “very big deal””

Curbs on business-method claims would be a dramatic about-face, because it was the federal circuit itself that

introduced such patents with is 1998 decision in the so-called state Street Bank case, approving a patent on a way

of pooling mutual-fund assets. That ruling produced an explosion in business-method patent filings, initially by

emerging internet companies trying to stake out exclusive pinhts to specific types of online transactions. Later,

move established companies raced to add such patents to their files, if only as a defensive move against rivals that

might bent them to the punch. In 2005, IBM noted in a court filing that it had been issued more than 300

business-method patents despite the fact that it questioned the legal basis for granting them. Similarly, some Wall

Street investment films armed themselves with patents for financial products, even as they took positions in court

-face” (Line 1,Para 3) most probably means

cases opposing t h e . The word “about

[A] loss of good will

[B] increase of hostility

[C] change of attitude

[D] enhancement of disnity

The Bilski case involves a claimed patent on a method for hedging risk in the energy market.? The Federal circuit

typical

issued an unusual order stating that the case would be heard by all 12 of the court’s judges, rather than a

panel of three and that one issue it wants to evaluate is weather it should “reconsider” its state street Bank ruli

Bank ruling”

n the wake of a series of recent decisions by the supreme Count that has

The Federal Circuit’s action comes i

narrowed the scope of protections for patent holders. Last April, for example the justices signaled that too many

patents were being upheld for “inventions” that are obvious. The judges on the Federal circuit are “reactin anti_patent trend at the supreme court”, says Harole , a partend attorney and professor at aeorge Washington

University Law the wake of= after .

(esteem).

[B] too many =often

unnecessarily.?

29. We learn from the last two paragraphs that business-method patents

[A] are immune to legal challenges

[B] are often unnecessarily issued

[C] lower the esteem for patent holders

[D] increase the incidence of risks

30. Which of the following would be the subject of the text?

[A] A looming threat to business-method patents

[B] Protection for business-method patent holders

[C] A legal case regarding business-method patents

[D] A prevailing trend against business-method patents

选择[A] 。

最后一段明确提出reacting to the anti-patent trend at the supreme court .

Text 3

?①In his book The Tipping Point, Malcolm Aladuell argues that “social epidemics” are driven in large part by the actions of a tiny minority of special individuals, often called influentials, who are unusually informed,

ideas actually persuasive, or well connected. ②The idea is intuitively compelling, but it doesn’t explain how spread.

31. By citing the book The Tipping Point, the author intends to __________.

[A]analyze the consequences of social epidemics

[B]discuss influentials’ function in spreading ideas

[C]exemplify people’s intuitive response to social epidemics

[D]describe the essential characteristics of influentials.

①The supposed importance of influentials derives from a plausible-sounding but largely untested theory called the “two-step flow of communication”: Information flows from the media to the influentials and from them to everyone else. ②Marketers have embraced the two-step flow because it suggests that if they can just find and influence the influentials, those select people will do most of the work for them. ③The theory also seems to

explain the sudden and unexpected popularity of certain looks, brands, or neighborhoods. ④In many such cases, a cursory search for causes finds that some small group of people was wearing, promoting, or developing whatever it

is before anyone else paid attention. ⑤Anecdotal evidence of this kind fits nicely with the idea that only certain

special people can drive trends.

请看supposed在《牛津高阶英语词典》的英文解释[only before noun] used to show that you

think that a claim, statement or way of describing sb/sth is not true or correct, although it is generally believed to

be。

③中的seems ④中的cursory search(草率的搜索) ⑤中的Anecdotal evidence(传闻的证据)这几个词组

-step flow theory” __________.

32. The author suggests that the “two

[A]serves as a solution to marketing problems

[B]has helped explain certain prevalent trends

[C]has won support from influentials

[D]requires solid evidence for its validity

①In their recent work, however, some researchers have come up with the finding that influentials have far less

impact on social epidemics than is generally supposed. ②In fact, they don’t seem to be required of all.

③The

he exception of a few

researchers’ argument stems from a simple observation about social influence, with t

celebrities like Oprah Winfrey — whose outsize presence is primarily a function of media, not interpersonal,

④Yet influence —even the most influential members of a population simply don’t interact with that many others. it is precisely these noncelebrity influentials who, according to the two-step-flow theory, are supposed to drive

social epidemics by influencing their friends and colleagues directly. ⑤For a social epidemic to occur, however,

each person so affected, must then influence his or her own acquaintances, who must in turn influence theirs, and

so on; ⑥and just how many others pay attention to each of these people has little to do with the initial influential.

⑦If people in the network just two degrees removed from the initial influential prove resistant, for example, the

ct many people.

cascade of change won’t propagate very far or affe

?

interaction.

33. What the researchers have observed recently shows that __________.

[A] the power of influence goes with social interactions.

[B] interpersonal links can be enhanced through the media.

[C] influentials have more channels to reach the public.

[D] most celebrities enjoy wide media attention.

正确选项解析[A] 由⑤可知, a social epidemic to occur= the power of influence, his or her own

acquaintances=social interaction 可以明确的同义替换。goes with? 与…相伴而生。

[C] channel(渠道)无中生有[D]“大多数名

underlined phrase “these people” in paragraph 4 refers to the ones who __________.

[A] stay outside the network of social influence

[B] have little contact with the source of influence

[C] are influenced and then influence others

[D] are influenced by the initial influential

与initial influential(= the

⑥说的是“how many others pay attention to each of these people”

与initial influential(= the source of influence)接触不

source of influence)无关,而[B]偷换为“these people”

多。

①Building on the basic truth about interpersonal influence, the researchers studied the dynamics of social

contagion by conducting thousands of computer simulations of populations, manipulating a number of variables

relating to people’s ability to influence others and their tendency to be influenced.

35. What is the essential element in the dynamics of social influence?

[A]The eagerness to be accepted

[B]The impulse to influence others

[C]The readiness to be influenced

[D]The inclination to rely on others

[C] The readiness to be influenced由本段最后一句可知社会影响的动力要素是:人们影响别人

干扰选项分析[B] 错在impulse(突如其来的念头)

[A]错在accept

[D]错在rely on

?If people in the network just two degrees removed from the initial influential prove resistant, for example the casecade of change won’t propagate very far or affect many people.

Text 4

示例:not the price managers and regulators would like them to fetch.)?

①Bankers have been blaming themselves for their troubles in public. ②Behind the scenes, they have been taking aim at someone else: the accounting standard-setters. ③Their rules, moan the banks, have forced them to report enormous losses, and it's just not fair. ④These rules say they must value some assets at the price a third party would pay, not the price managers and regulators would like them to fetch.

These rules say they must value some assets at the price a third party would pay, not”not

36. Bankers complained that they were forced to __________.

[A] follow unfavorable asset evaluation rules

[B] collect payments from third parties

[C] cooperate with the price managers

[D] reevaluate some of their assets.

正确选项解析[A] 36题complain= moan ,not fair(③) = unfavorable , value some assets(④)= asset evaluation 所以本题属于根正苗红的同义替换。

错误一:原文④说:“These rules say they must value some assets at the

。。,not the price managers and regulators would like them to fetch”照managers的期待的价格评估”,所以这与cooperate(合作)相反。

错误二:原文中没有提到price manager 这个概念,④managers and regulators would like them to fetch.

[D] reevaluate(重新评估)无中生有。

①Unfortunately, banks' lobbying now seems to be working. ②The details may be unknowable, but the independence of standard-setters, essential to the proper functioning of capital markets, is being compromised. ③And, unless banks carry toxic assets at prices that attract buyers, reviving the banking system will be difficult.

standard-setters。

①After a bruising encounter with Congress, America's Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) rushed

through rule changes. ②These gave banks more freedom to use models to value illiquid assets and more

flexibility in recognizing losses on long-term assets in their income statement. ③Bob Herz, the FASB's chairman, cried out against those who "question our motives." ④Yet bank shares rose and the changes enhance what one lobby group politely calls "the use of judgment by management."

rushed through 只需要认识through,表示“通过”。

These gave banks mor e freedom to… value …assets and more

“即银行在评估资产上有了更多的flexibility… in their income statement.

出37[A].本句只需看懂the changes …enhance the

use of judgment by management.“

37. According to the author , the rule changes of the FASB may result in __________.

[A] the diminishing role of management

[B] the revival of the banking system

[C] the banks' long-term asset losses

[D] the weakening of its independence

所以37题题干问的“the rule changes of the FASB”

所以这里的compromise= weaken,根正苗红的同义替换。

①European ministers instantly demanded that the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) do likewise.

②The IASB says it does not want to act without overall planning, but the pressure to fold when it completes it reconstruction of rules later this year is strong. ③Charlie McCreevy, a European commissioner, warned the IASB

that it did "not live in a political vacuum" but "in the real word" and that Europe could yet develop different rules.

__________.

38. According to Paragraph 4, McCreevy objects to the IASB’s attempt to

[A] keep away from political influences.

[B] evade the pressure from their peers.

[C] act on their own in rule-setting.

[D] take gradual measures in reform.

这三句话的中心是:IASB想自己独立的制定规则(act on their own in rule-setting),而欧洲部长(包括McCreevy)又想命令其按自己意愿行为。

但是与[C]相比,[C]更加符干扰选项分析[A]是强干扰项,貌似是对“not in a political vacuum”

①It was banks that were on the wrong planet, with accounts that vastly overvalued assets. ②Today they argue that market prices overstate losses, because they largely reflect the temporary illiquidity of markets, not the likely extent of bad debts. ③The truth will not be known for years. ④But bank's shares trade below their book value, suggesting that investors are skeptical. ⑤And dead markets partly reflect the paralysis of banks which will not sell assets for fear of booking losses, yet are reluctant to buy all those supposed bargains.

①强调句必考(it was …that…)+ 段首常考+因果常考(with)。注意with在字典中有一个解释是:because of (sth); on account of (sth) 因为或由於(某事物)。

39. The author thinks the banks were “on the wrong planet” in that they __________.

[A] misinterpreted market price indicators

[B] exaggerated the real value of their assets

[C] neglected the likely existence of bad debts.

[D] denied booking losses in their sale of assets.

可以发现本题只需认识overvalue(高估)和exaggerate(夸大),解题是非常简单的。

①To get the system working again, losses must be recognized and dealt with. ②America's new plan to buy up toxic assets will not work unless banks mark assets to levels which buyers find attractive. ③Successful markets require independent and even combative standard-setters. ④The FASB and IASB have been exactly that, cleaning up rules on stock options and pensions, for example, against hostility from special interests. ⑤But by giving in to critics now they are inviting pressure to make more concessions.

注意本句combative不认识没关系,因为 A and B 结构中,一般认为A=B,二者看懂一个即可。

author’s attitude towards standard

-setters is one of __________.

[A] satisfaction.

[B] skepticism.

[C] objectiveness

[D] sympathy

干扰选项分析[A] satisfaction 的英文解释:feeling of contentment felt when one has or achieves what one needs or desires。

The relationship between formal education and economic growth in poor countries is widely misunderstood by economists and politicians alike. Progress in both area is undoubtedly necessary for the social, political and intellectual development of these and all other societies; however, the conventional view that education should be one of the very highest priorities for promoting rapid economic development in poor countries is wrong. We are fortunate that it is, because building new educational systems there and putting enough people through them to improve economic performance would require two or three generations. 31. The author holds that the importance of education in poor countries______. [A] is subject to groundless doubts [B] has fallen victim of bias [C] is conventional downgraded [D] has been overestimated 解析:首先依据题干关键词the importance of education in poor countries定位到第一句The relationship between formal education and economic growth in poor countries is widely misunderstood,但是仔细研读后发现贫穷国家中正规教育与经济发展之间的关系为经济学家及政治家们普遍误解。 继续定位到第三句however, the conventional view that education should be one of the very highest priorities for promoting rapid economic development in poor countries is wrong.

Text1 Habits are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly, setting our brains on auto-pilot and relaxing into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine. “Not ch In but habit rules the unreflecting herd,” William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. the ever-changing 21st century, even the word “habit” carries a negative connotation. So it seems antithetical to talk about habits in the same context as creativity and innovation. But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel synaptic paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks. But don’t bother trying to kil off old habits; once those ruts of procedure are worn into the hippocampus, they there to stay. Instead, the new habits we deliberately ingrain into ourselves create parallel pathways that can bypass those old roads. “The first thing needed for innovation is a fascination with wonder,” says D Markova, author of “The Open Mind” and an executive change consultant for Professional Thinking Partners. “But we are taught instead to ‘decide,’ just as decide is to kill off president calls himself ‘the Decider.’” She adds, however, that “to all possibilities but one. 考研英语阅读理解模拟试题及答案(三) Passage 11 Dream is a story that a personwatchesor even takes part in during sleep. Dream events are imaginary, but they are related to real experiences and needs in the dreamer's life. They seem real while they are taking place. Some dreams are pleasant, others are annoying, and still others are frightening. Everyone dreams, but some persons never recall dreaming. Others remember only a little about a dream they had just before awakening and nothing about earlier dreams. No one recalls all his dreams. Dreams involve little logical thought. In most dreams, the dreamer cannot control what happens to him. The story may be confusing, and things happen that would not happen in real life. People see in most dreams, but they may also hear, smell, touch, and taste in their dreams. Most dreams occur in color. but persons who have been blind since birth do not see at all in dreams. Dreams are a product of the sleeper's mind. They

1994 Passage 5

1994 Passage 5 Discoveries in science and technology are thought by "untaught minds" to come in blinding flashes or as the result of dramatic accidents. Sir Alexander Fleming did not, as legend would have it, look at the mold on a piece of cheese and get the idea for penicillin there and then. He experimented with antibacterial substances for nine years before he made his discovery. Inventions and innovations almost always come out of laborious trial and error. Innovation is like soccer; even the best players miss the goal and have their shots blocked much more frequently than they score. The point is that the players who score most are the ones who take the most shots at the goal — and so it goes with innovation in any field of activity. The prime difference between innovators and others is one of approach. Everybody gets ideas, but innovators work consciously on theirs, and they follow them through until they prove practicable or otherwise. What ordinary people see as fanciful abstractions, professional innovators see as solid possibilities. "Creative thinking may mean simply the realization that there's no particular virtue in doing things the way they have always been done," wrote Rudolph Flesch, a language authority. This accounts for our reaction to seemingly simple innovations like plastic garbage bags and suitcases on wheels that make life more convenient: "How come nobody thought of that before?" The creative approach begins with the proposition that nothing is as it appears. Innovators will not accept that there is only one way to do anything. Faced with getting from A to B, the average person will automatically set out on the best-known and apparently simplest route. The innovator will search for alternate courses, which may prove easier in the long run and are bound to be more interesting and challenging even if they lead to dead ends. Highly creative individuals really do march to a different drummer. 67. What does the author probably mean by "untaught mind" in the first paragraph? [A] A person ignorant of the hard work involved in experimentation. [B] A citizen of a society that restricts personal creativity. [C] A person who has had no education. [D] An individual who often comes up with new ideas by accident. 68. According to the author, what distinguishes innovators from non-innovators? [A] The variety of ideas they have. [B] The intelligence they possess. [C] The way they deal with problems. [D] The way they present their findings. 69. The author quotes Rudolph Flesch in Paragraph 3 because ________. [A] Rudolph Flesch is the best-known expert in the study of human creativity [B] the quotation strengthens the assertion that creative individuals look for new ways of doing things [C] the reader is familiar with Rudolph Flesch's point of view [D] the quotation adds a new idea to the information previously presented

Section II R eading Comprehension Each of the two passages below is followed by five questions. For each question there are four answers. Read the passages carefully and choose the best answer to each of the questions. Put your choice in the brackets on the left. (10 points) Text 1 ①In May 1989, space shuttle “Atlantis” released in outer space the space probe “Megallan,” which is now on her 15-month and one-billion-kilometer flight to Venus. ②A new phase in space exploration has begun. ①The planet Venus is only slightly smaller than Earth; it is the only other object in the solar system, in fact, that even comes close to earth’s size. ②Venus has a similar density, so it is probably made of approximately the same stuff, and it has an atmosphere, complete with clouds. ③It is also the closest planet to earth, and thus the most similar in distance from the sun. ④In short, Venus seems to justify its long-held nickname of “earth’s twin.” ①The surface temperature of Venus reaches some 900F. ②Added to that is an atmospheric pressure about 90 times Earth’s: High overhead in the carbon dioxide (CO2) that passes for air is a layer of clouds, perhaps 10 to 20 miles thick, whose little drops consist mostly of sulfuric acid (H2SO4). ③Water is all but nonexistent. ①Born with so many fundamental similarities to earth, how did Venus get to be so radically different: It is not just an academic matter. ②For all its extremes, Venus is a valuable laboratory for researchers studying the weather and climate of earth. ③It has no earth’s oceans, so the heat transport and other mechanisms are greatly simplified. ④In addition, the planet Venus takes 243 earth-days to turn once on its axis, so incoming heat from the sun is added and distributed at a more leisurely, observable pace. 材料,东西 8.passes for被当成9.sulfuric a. 1. Consumers should celebrate that; the firms’losses are their gains. But there is a catch. Comparisonsites, whether for insurance or something else, introduce a new layer of costs, including their own splashy advertising campaigns. In theory, competition in the market for comparison sites ought to keep those costs down. But in a recentpaper, David Ronayne of Warwick University argues that consumers often lose outfrom comparison sites. They earn a commission for each shopper who uses them to buy insurance. That referral cost is incorporated into the price the consumer ends up paying. If the increased costs outweigh the saving the comparison enables, consumers end up worse off. 1. Why consumers often lose out from the comparison sites? (A) The referral cost will be increasedby splashy advertising campaigns. (B) Consumers may not earn the commissionwhen buying the insurance. (C) The new layer of costs may increasethe price of insurance. (D) The insurance company may spend moreon comparison sites. 1. Why consumers often lose out from the comparison sites? (A) The referral cost will be increased by splashy advertising campaigns. referral cost和splashy advertising campaigns之间是没有关系的(看译文你就知道了) (B) Consumers may not earn the commission when buying the insurance. (C) The new layer of costs may increase the price of insurance. Comparison sites, whether for insurance or something else, introduce a new layer of costs. C!!!) (D) The insurance company may spend more on comparison sites. That referral cost is incorporated into the price the consumer ends up paying. Comparison sites, whether for insurance or something else, introduce a new layer of costs.
