（四）（14分） 植物会说话 丹尼尔•查莫维茨 ①五角菟丝子作为一种蔓生植物，因不含叶绿素，需要寄生在其他植物中吸取其营养方可生存。它幼苗的颈尖以小圆圈的方式探测周围环境，寻找它所偏好的植物，就像我们蒙住眼睛时用手试探周围环境，或是深夜在厨房找灯的开关时的样子。实验人员不论将番茄放于什么地方，菟丝子的藤始终朝着番茄方向生长。为了证实菟丝子能够嗅出番茄所在位置这个猜想，孔苏埃洛•德莫拉埃斯将它和番茄分别放入一个密闭的盒子里，两盒之间用管子相连保证空气对流，结果它总是朝着管子方向生长。又在棉签上涂上番茄提取液，它还真中了圈套，朝着涂有提取液的棉签生长。此后，她拿成分非常相似的番茄和小麦的提取液做实验，尽管二者都含有一种挥发性化合物β_月桂烯，但因番茄还释放出两种能吸引菟丝子的挥发性物质，而小麦不含这两种挥发性物质，且还会释放一种令菟丝子讨厌的气体，菟丝子当然向着番茄方向生长。 ②1983年，戴维•罗德斯发现，一棵柳树被天幕毛毛虫啃噬过，临近柳树的叶子变得不受毛毛虫欢迎，是因为后者的叶子中含有不合毛毛虫口味的酚类和单宁化合物，而那些较远的健康柳树却不含这些化合物。受损柳树和临近健康柳树之间，没有共同的根，树枝间也没有相互接触。被啃噬的柳树是通过空气向临近健康柳树发出了一种信息素信号，即通过化学信号对它们说：“当心！保护好自己！”接着，杰克•舒尔茨以杨树和唐枫幼苗为对象进行实验，支持了罗德斯的观点。 ③“植物之间可以相互交流”！罗德斯的这一发现，颠覆了我们以往对植物的认识。然而这些报道大多缺乏正确对照，或结果被夸大，往往受到其他科学家的驳斥。在过去的10多年里，大量植物通过气味进行交流的现象已被反复证实。但问题是，植物真的能彼此交流（有意识地发出预警）吗？是否健康植物只是“偷听”到了临近受损植物的自言自语（而非受损植物有意告知它们）？马丁•海尔提出了疑问并展开深入研究。他知道，利马豆植株被甲虫侵扰时会有两种反应：被啃噬的叶片会向空气中释放一些挥发性化学物质；而花则会产生花蜜，吸引以甲虫为食的节肢动物。——那它为什么会释放这些化学物质呢？ ④他从三棵利马豆植株中选取了4张叶片做实验：从被啃啮过的同一植株上选择了2张叶片——第1张被甲虫啃啮过，第2张没有；第3张为临近的、未被啃啮过的健康植株；第4张为被隔离的、未被啃啮过的健康植株。通过气相高端分析技术鉴定，第1、2、3张叶片周围空气中都含有挥发性物质；第4张叶片周围则没有。这说明受损植株临近的健康植株不易遭受到虫害侵扰，却没有得出他们想要的结果。 ⑤海尔调整了实验设计来检测他的假设。将两株植物放在一起，但用塑料袋将被啃啮过的叶片封闭24小时。然后按照上一个实验的方法选择4张叶片进行检测，结果发生了变化。被啃啮过的叶片仍然释放化学物质，但同一植株的同一根藤以及邻近藤上的其他叶片却与对照叶片相似——它们周围空气中没有这些化学物质。解下密封袋，用小风扇将袋中的气体向两个方向吹：一是向这根利马豆藤上方的临近叶片，二是朝着远离利马豆的空气中。结果发现，接触到袋中气体的植株叶片自己也开始释放同样的气体，且植株还会分泌花蜜。那些没有接触到气体的叶片和植株则与以前一样。 ⑥几十次实验结果一致，秘密揭开了：被啃啮过的叶片释放气体，是为了保护植株自身的其他叶片不受攻击。即当一张叶片受到昆虫或细菌的侵害时，会释放出气味，警告同一植株上的其他叶片保护自己，抵御将临的侵袭。就像中国长城上的烽火台，守卫者们用点燃烽火的方式传递信号，警告其他守卫塔有敌人来袭了。临近植株则以嗅觉方式“偷听”受损植株自身叶片间的“嗅觉对话”，便做出反应以保护自己免受伤害。当然，利马豆这种气味信号只能传播一两米远，但这一发现为人类保护树木和作物提供了崭新的思路…… ⑦每种植物都有自己特殊的气味。植物和动物也可以利用这些气味进行复杂的交流。比
