AOn Christmas morning, I went to the Cockhedge Mall. People there were, all busy buyingtheir last minute requirements.I needed to buy a birthday card for my son-in-law whose birthday is the 29fh of December.Picking up a few more things as well as mycared I went to join the line for the express checkout which was for people .whoonly had a few items in a basket and.not a trolley load. This line was next to the Customer Service desk.Seemingly waiting quite a long time, I was jogged out of my thoughts by a voice behindme making comments on the things I bought. It was so funny when I realized that she was describing me contents of my basket. The owner of the voice was a very pretty young lady.I said to her that I was going tobuy a box of Christmas cookies but the only ones left were not to my liking. The ladytold me mat just opposite Cockhedge in Superdrug they had lots of cookies.I said,"I'm not going to bother now.I had enough of shops and I'm going home."The assistant from me Customer Service came across at this time saying "If there is anyone in the line with a few items in their basket, none of which needed to be weighed,I will check out their groceries at the desk." Because I had the sprouts which neededto be weighted, the young lady accepted the offer and walked away waving goodbye.Eventually my turn came at the checkout.I was walking away when I met my new friendonce again who handed me a beautiful box of Christmas cookies. With a big hug shesaid "Hope you have a lovely Christmas." She had been into Superdrug to buy me cookieswhile I was still queuing in Cockhedge. What a generosity to a stranger! I was so surprised you could have knocked me downwith a feather. My Good Samaritan would never know what a joyful Christmas day I hadwith my family.Telling them this story, as we ate around the table, kept everyone spellbound.1.—The underlined word "spellbound" in the last paragraph probably means______.A.interested B.disappointed C.astonished D.frightened2.Which of the following could be the best title of the story?A.A Piece of Lucky Feather B.A Surprise Christmas GiftC.The Boring Shopping Experience D.The Unforgettable Big Hug3.How does the writer feel about the pretty young lady?A.Worried B.Satisfied C.Grateful D.Proud4.What can we learn from the story?A.Nobody is sure what will happen the next moment.B.A simple action can bring other people happiness.C.Being patient will decrease the waiting time. ,D.Life without hope and faith is a full thing.BAt the moment, when looking round the world,, all kinds of dance performances are being offered. There are competitions that claim to be a World Cup or World Championship, and the young dancer or the1 dance teacher who wants to enter his students might be quite confused.Which is which? Which is of high standard and good quality, and which is not worth going to? First of all it has clearly got to be distinguished between the different styles of dance and the purpose of such competitions. When a person wants to learn classical ballet,, he or she would never dream of going to a ballroom teacher.Such a teacher might even have been world champion in his ballroom dancing, but he would definitely not be qualified in teaching proper classical ballet.People in Britain and the USA are taking more interest in modern dance.Dance classes of all kinds are popular; the audiences going to watch modem dance companies are also larger. And perhaps the most popular modern dance company in Britain is the Ballet Rambert. The Ballet Rambert isBritain's oldest established dance company which began in 1926.In the 60 s the company lacked the money to go on staging big productions. The directors wanted to encourage new talent and to keep up their high standards.A change of direction was necessary, They decided to give the ballet a “new look" in 1966.The purpose was to provide a chance for new talent - for musicians and designers as well as dancers - and to show dance as a contemporary art form. And although some of the company's previous fans dislike the change, new audiences came to see the productions. The modern dance pieces and modern music found unexpected popularity. In the 21st century the Ballet Rambert was a great success in London's West End.The company became a focus for new, progressive talent in the art. Then, the Ballet Rambert started to introduce young people to modem dance by giving performances at schools, which again, was a success. The Ballet Rambert has managed to make modem dance popular while creating original and often avant—garde (标新立异) productions. It can claim to be the oldest dance company in Britain and at the same time one of the most modern!5.If a person wants to learn classical ballet, he or she will go to .A.the Ballet Rambert B.a ballroom teacherC.a world champion D.a qualified school6.The underlined phrase "new talent" in Para.3 probably means ______.A.new programs B.new audiencesC.avant - garde productions D.skilled young dancers7.From the passage we know that the Ballet Rambert .A.has succeeded in making modem dance popularB.wanted to become the oldest dance companyC.was once a popular dance companyD.changed old dance into new ones8.This passage is mainly about _____.A.the popularity of modem danceB.the introduction to new modem dancersC.the development of me Ballet RambertD.the high standard of dance performancesCThe word "conservation" has a thrifty meaning. To conserve is to save and protect,to leave what we ourselves enjoy in such a good condition that others may also sharethe enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase fasterthan the supplies of raw materials: most of them, even until very recently, had thefoolish idea that the treasures were "limitless" and could "last forever" Most ofthe citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about me complicated and delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body, an unhealthy condition of one part will sooner or later be hamrful to all the others.Fifty years ago, nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestrywas a new idea; wood was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity fromdistant woodlands; soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied long-term climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; eventhe word "conservation" had nothing of the meaning that it has for us today. For thesake of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about correctingthe mistakes of our forefathers.Conservation should be made part of everybody's daily life.To know about the water table in ground is just as important to us as a knowledgeof the basic math formulas. We need to know why all watersheds(上游集水区) needthe protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and rivers mustbe made to give their fall benefit to the soil before they finally escape to the sea.Weneed to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them.We need toknow the importance of big, grown trees, because living space f or most of man’s fellow creatures on this planet is fighred not only in square measure of surface but alsoin cubic(立方体的)volume above the earth. In a word, it should be our goal to restoreas much of the original beauty of nature as we can.9.The author's attitude towards the use of natural resources is _____.A.positive B.uninterested C.optimistic D.critical10.According to the author,, the greatest mistake of our forefathers was mat .A.they had no idea about scientific forestryB.they had little or no sense of environmental protectionC.they were not aware of the importance of nature studyD.they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials11.To avoid repeating the mistakes of our forefathers, the author suggests that _____.A.we plant more treesB.natural sciences be taught to everybodyC.environmental education be directed toward everyoneD.we return to nature12.How can you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?A.Our living space on the earth is getting smaller and smaller.B.Our living space should be measured in cubic volume.C.We need to take some measures to protect space.D.We must preserve good living conditions for both birds and animals.DDuring the years after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, structural engineers have been trying hard to solve a question that would otherwise have been completely unthinkable: Can building be designed to stand catastrophic blasts (攻击;爆破) by terrorists?Soon after the terrorist attacks on the twin towers, structural engineers from the University at Buffalo and the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) traveled to ground zero as part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation. They spent two days beginning the task of formulating(构思)ideas about how to design such structures and to search for clues on how to do so in buildings that were damaged, but still are standing."Our objective in visiting ground zero was to go and look at the buildings surrounding the World Trade Center, those buildings that are still standing, but that sustained damage," said Mr.Bruneau, Ph.D."Our immediate hope is that we can develop a better understanding as to why those buildings remain standing, while our long-term goal is to see whether earthquake engineering technologies can be married to existing technologies to achieve enhanced performance of buildings in the event of terrorist attacks," he added.Photographs taken by the investigators demonstrate the monumental damage to the World Trade Center towers and buildings nearby. One building a block away from the towers remains standing, but was badly damaged."This building is many meters away from the World Trade Center and yet we see a column (柱子) there that used to be part of that building," explained A.Whittaker, Ph.D."The column became a missile that shot across the road, through the window and through the floor." ,The visit to the area also brought some surprises, according to the engineers. For example, the floor framing (框架) system in one of the buildings was quite strong, allowing floors that were pierced by tons of falling debris (残砾) to survive."Good framing systems may provide a simple, but reliable strategy for blast resistance," he added.Other strategies may include providing alternate paths for gravity loads in the event that a load-bearing column fails."We also need a better understanding of the mechanism of collapse," said A.Whittaker."We need to find out what causes a building to collapse and how you can predict it."A. Reinhorn, Ph.D.noted that "earthquake shaking has led to the collapse of buildings in the past.Solutions developed for earthquake-resistant design may apply to blast engineering and terrorist-resistant design.Part of our mission now is to transfer these solutions and to develop new ones where none exist at present."1 3.The question raised in the first paragraph is one __ .A.that was asked by structural engineers a month agoB.that is too difficult for structural engineers a month agoC.that was never thought of before the terrorist attackD.that terrorists are eager to find a solution to14.The column mentioned by Dr.Whittaker _ __.A.was part of the building close to the World Trade CenterB.was part of me World Trade CenterC.was shot through me window and the floor of the World Trade CenterD.damaged many buildings near the World Trade Center15.A surprising discovery made by the investigators during their visit to ground zero is that___.A.floors in the faraway buildings remained undamagedB.some floor framing systems demonstrate resistance to explosionC.complex floor framing systems are more blast resistantD.floors in one of the buildings were pierced by tons of debris1 6.What Dr.Reinhorn said in the last paragraph may imply all the following EXCEPT that .A.blast engineers should develop new solutions for terror-resistant design B.blast engineering can borrow technologies developed for terror-resistant designC.solutions developed for earthquake-resistant design may apply to terrorist resistant designD.blast engineering emerges as a totally new branch of scienceEToday, mere's hardly an aspect of our life that isn't being upended by the tons of information available on the hundreds of millions of sites crowding the Internet, not to mention its ability to keep us in constant touch with each other via electronic mail."If the automobile and aerospace technology had exploded at the same pace as computer and information technology," says Microsoft, "a new car would cost about $ 2 and go 600 miles on a small quantity of gas.And you could buy a Booing 747 for the cost of a pizza."Probably the biggest payoff, however, is the billions of dollars the Internet is saving companies in producing goods and serving for the needs of their customers. Nothing like it has been seen since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, when power-driven machines began producing more in a day than men could turn out in nearly a year."We view the growth of the Internet and e-commerce as a global trend," says Merrill Lynch, "along the lines of printing press, the telephone, the computer, and electricity."You would be hard pressed to name something mat isn't available on the Internet. Consider: books, health care, movie tickets, construction materials, baby clothes, stocks, cattle feed, music, electronics, antiques, tools, real estate, toys, autographs of famous people, wine and airline tickets. And even after you've moved on to your final resting place, there’s no reason those you love can't keep in touch.A company called FinalThoughts.com offers a place for you to store "afterlife e-mails" you can send to Heaven with the help of a "guardian angel.”Kids today are so computer literate that it in fact ensures the United States will remain the unchallenged leader in cyberspace for the foreseeable(能预测的)future. AWhat can help you make a fortune in the future? Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn later. The idea that popularity could have a serious impact on one’s earning potential shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.“If a per son has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations,” said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. “Also, friends always hel p each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you occasionally feel depressed,” said Xu. She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary”.Maybe that’s why some people think the younger generations are i n the age of Friendalholism(交友狂症). A woman even complained that the networking website Facebook’s 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large reserve of social contacts. But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency?“Call me uncool, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition of ‘friend’,” said Meghan Daum, who works with the Los Angeles Times in the US.1.The new study from the University of Essex in Britain shows that_______.if you have more friends you will not live happilythe more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn in your late lifethe less friends you have, the poor lives you will livefriends can make more money for you2 According to Xu Yanchun, when you have lots of friends, itmeans________.you have the ability to earn more moneyyou will not feel lonelyyou are quite content with your lifeyou have the ability to get along with others in various situations 3.What’s the main idea of the passage? The passage mainly tells us something about the friendship. Friendship plays a more important part in our daily life than anything else.Friends are currency.Friends give you success.4.We can learn from the passage that _______.if you have more friends, you can make a fortune in the future graduating from college means that you can make a fortune in the future friends mean a form of currencyfriends can make you wider social circle and make you feel better when you feel depressedBWind , water, fire and ice-these powerful natural forces have shaped the land of America in the past. They are still changing it today. The Colorado River slowly cut down through stone to make the Grand Canyon(大峡谷).Long ago, ice sheets cut Yosemite Valley and the Great Lakes, and glaciers(冰川) are still on the move in Alaska.Wind and rain storm hit the land from time to time. Fires sometimes burn down forests and destroy the homes of wild animals. This happened in Yellowstone Park in 1988.Dead volcanic mountains such as Haleakala on Maui and Carter Lakein Oregon are beautiful to look at. But there are several active volcanoes in the US, especially along the Pacific Coast. There are also many earthquakes in this area. Scientists can do nothing to control earthquakes or volcanoes. This was shown clearly on May 18, 1980. At 8:32 that morning, Mount St Helens in Washington state broke out. The top of the mountain was blown off.Over 60 people –campers, scientists, journalists, forest workers—were killed. Hundreds of square miles of forests were knocked down. In towns over 100 miles away, day suddenly became night. An ash cloud hid the sun for many hours. Towns and fields in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho were covered with dirty gray ash.Scientists knew that Mt St Helens might erupt(爆发) soon. But no one could say when. And no one expected the terrible strength of the eruption. Many people were surprised and unready. Harry R. Truman, 84, owned a small hotel in Mt St Helens. Scientists had asked people to move away because the volcano was becoming dangerous. But Harry Truman would not leave his home. Now it is covered with many feet of dirty ash. A small cross stands above the place where Harry probably died. Perhaps it is better that he did not see the destruction of Mt St Helens, the once beautiful lake, and the forests. But slowly, life is returning to the dead area around the mountain. Grass and small plants are beginning to grow again. Deer and birds have been seen. The land will never be the same as it once was. Perhaps Mt St Helens will erupt again. But this is all part of nature’s pattern of change, and man has little power to control it.5. Choose the best title for this passage.Wind, water, fire and iceVolcano’s beauty and dangerThe power of natureNatural force shape beautiful land of America6. After the eruption of volcano, what makes the sky turn dark? The smoke B. The clouds. C. The fog. D. The ash.7. The underlined word “it” means______.The body of old HarryThe locat ion of Harry’s homeThe opening on top of Mt St HelensThe place where Harry probably died8. We can infer from this article that ______.Washington and Oregon are neighboring statesColorado River runs through Yosemite ValleyThe eruption of Mt St Helens also caused trouble with the Yellowstone Park Scientists never knew Mt St Helens was activeCJob sharing refers to the situation in which two people divide the responsibility of one full-time job. The people willingly act aspart-time workers, enough hours between them to fulfill the duties of a full-time worker. If they each work half the job, for example, they each receive 50 percent of the job’s wages, its holidays and its other benefits.Job sharing differs from conventional(常规的) part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment.Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people. Job sharing by contrast, is not designed to address the growing number of unemployed people. Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems; its focus, rather is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities. As would be expected, most job sharers are women. A survey carried out in 1988 by Bri tain’s Equal Opportunities Commission showed that 78 per cent of sharers were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and40 years of age. Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were re-entering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status. Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence. The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventionalone-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones. In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals.9. In what way is work sharing different from job sharing?A. Work sharing requires more working hours.B. Work sharing is aimed at creating more jobs.C. Work sharing provides a more satisfactory salary.D. Work sharing depends on the employer’s decision.10. According to paragraph4, young mothers preferred job sharing to conventional part-time work mainly because______.A. they sought higher social statusB. they were over ideal working agesC. they had difficulty finding full-time jobsD. they had to take care of both work and family11. In job sharing the partners should ______.A. enjoy equal social statusB. have similar work experienceC. keep in touch with each otherD. know each other very wellDThe National Trust has many campsites(野营地) in scenic locations all over the UK. AGoldie's SecretShe turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away. No way, not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before. "We're moving house.'; "No space for her any more with the baby coming." "We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present." People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could do to make her happy, it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous owner's. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire. That's why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless. Eventually I couldn't hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking (舔) the four puppies (幼犬) I started to feel sympathy towards them. "We didn't know what had happened to her," said the woman at the door. "I took her for a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared." "She must have tried to come back to them and got lost," added a boy from behind her.I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I've got Nugget now, and she looks just like her mother. And I've learnt a good lesson: not to judge people.1. How did the author feel about Goldie when Goldie came to the house?A. Shocked.B. Sympathetic.C. Annoyed.D. Upset.2. In her first few days at the author's house, Goldie ______.A. felt worriedB. was angryC. ate a littleD. sat by the fire3 Goldie rushed off to a farmhouse one day because she ______.A. saw her puppiesB. heard familiar barkingC. wanted to leave the authorD. found her way to her old home4. The passage is organized in order of ______.A. timeB. effectivenessC. importanceD. complexityBOpen Letter to an EditorI had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently --- one who works for you. In fact, he's one of your best reporters. He wants to leave. Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume(简历) and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues(问题), approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I'm sure you would hate to lose him. Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment (分工), and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you've given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom. So why is he looking for a way out?He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights. The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he's doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That's what you want for him, too, isn't it?So your reporter has set me thinking. Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists --- everyone --- is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. If we can't do it, they'll find someone who can.5. What does the writer think of the reporter?A. Optimistic.B. Imaginative.C. Ambitious.D. Proud.6. What does the reporter want most from his editors in their talks?A. Finding the news value of his stories.B. Giving him financial support.C. Helping him to find issues.D. Improving his good ideas.7 Who probably wrote the letter?A. An editor.B. An artist.C. A reporter.D. A reader.8. The letter aims to remind editors that they should ______.A. keep their best reporters at all costsB. give morefreedom to their reportersC. be aware of their reporters' professional developmentD. appreciate their reporters' working styles and attitudesCPacing and PausingSara tried to befriend her old friend Steve's new wife, but Betty never seemed to have anything to say. While Sara felt Betty didn't hold up her end of the conversation, Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem had to do with expectations about pacing and pausing.Conversation is a turn-taking game. When our habits are similar, there's no problem. But if our habits are different, you may start to talk before I'm finished or fail to take your turn when I'm finished. That's what was happening with Betty and Sara.It may not be coincidental that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between turns, is British, and Sara, who expected relatively shorter pauses, is American. Betty often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland. And Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel. The general phenomenon, then, is that the small conversation techniques, like pacing and pausing, lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style but about personality and abilities. These habitual differences are often the basis for dangerous stereotyping (思维定式). And these social phenomena can have very personal consequences. For example, a woman from the southwestern part of the US went to live in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel Department got together for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to break in --- and never found it. Although back home she was considered outgoing and confident, in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the end of the year, she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up.That's why slight differences in conversational style --- tiny little things like microseconds of pause --- can have a great effect on one's life. The result in this case was a judgment of psychological problems --- even in the mind of the woman herself, who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertiveness training.9. What did Sara think of Betty when talking with her?A. Betty was talkative.B. Betty was an interrupter.C. Betty did not take her turn.D. Betty paid no attention to Sara.10. According to the passage, who are likely to expect the shortest pauses between turns?A. Americans.B. Israelis.C. The British.D. TheFinns.11. We can learn from the passage that ______.A. communication breakdown results from short pauses and fast pacingB. women are unfavorably stereotyped in eastern cities of the USC. one's inability to speak up is culturally determined sometimesD. one should receive training to build up one's confidence12. The underlined word "assertiveness" in the last paragraph probably means ______.A. being willing to speak one's mindB. being able to increase one's powerC. being ready to make one's own judgmentD. being quick to express one's ideas confidentlyDThe Cost of Higher EducationIndividuals (个人) should pay for their higher education.A university education is of huge and direct benefit to the individual. Graduates earn more than non-graduates. Meanwhile, social mobility is ever more dependent on having a degree. However, only some people have it. So the individual, not the taxpayers, should pay for it. There are pressing calls on the resources (资源) of the government. Using taxpayers' money to help a small number of people to earn high incomes in the future is not one of them.Full government funding (资助) is not very good for universities. Adam Smith worked in a Scottish university whose teachers lived off student fees. He knew and looked down upon 18th-century Oxford, where the academics lived comfortably off the income received from the government. Guaranteed salaries, Smith argued, were the enemy of hard work; and when the academics were lazy and incompetent, the students were similarly lazy.If students have to pay for their education, they not only work harder, but also demand more from their teachers. And their teachers have to keep them satisfied. If that means taking teaching seriously, and giving less time to their own research interests, that is surely something to celebrate. Many people believe that higher education should be free because it is good for the economy (经济). Many graduates clearly do contribute to national wealth, but so do all the businesses that invest () and create jobs. If you believe that the government should pay for higher education because graduates are economically productive, you should also believe that the government should pay part of business costs. Anyone promising to create jobs should receive a gift of capital from the government to invest. Therefore, it is the individual, not the government, who should pay for their university education.13. The underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refers to ______.A. taxpayersB. pressing callsC. college graduatesD. government resources14. The author thinks that with full government funding ______.A. teachers are less satisfiedB. students are more demandingC. students will become more competentD. teachers will spend less time on teaching15. The author mentions businesses in Paragraph 5 in order to ______.A. argue against free university educationB. call on them to finance students' studiesC. encourage graduates to go into businessD. show their contribution to higher education参考答案高BADAC DACCB CDBDA。

It can claim to be the oldest dance company in Britain and at the same time one of the most modern!5.If a person wants to learn classical ballet, he or she will goto .A.the Ballet Rambert B.a ballroom teacherC.a world champion D.a qualified school 6.The underlined phrase "new talent" in Para.3 probably means ______.A.new programs B.new audiencesC.avant - garde productions D.skilled young dancers7.From the passage we know that the Ballet Rambert .A.has succeeded in making modem dance popularB.wanted to become the oldest dance companyC.was once a popular dance companyD.changed old dance into new ones8.This passage is mainly about _____.A.the popularity of modem danceB.the introduction to new modem dancersC.the development of me Ballet RambertD.the high standard of dance performancesCThe word "conservation" has a thrifty meaning. To conserve is to save and protect, to leave what we ourselves enjoy in such a good condition that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials: most of them, even until very recently, had the foolish idea that the treasures were "limitless" and could "last forever" Most of the citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about me complicated and delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body, an unhealthy condition of one part will sooner or later be hamrful to all the others.Fifty years ago, nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry was a new idea; wood was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands; soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied long-term climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; even the word "conservation" had nothing of the meaning that it has for us today. For the sake of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about correcting the mistakes of our forefathers.Conservation should be made part of everybody's daily life.To know about the water table in ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the basic math formulas. We need to know why all watersheds(上游集水区) need the protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and rivers must be made to give their fall benefit to the soil before they finally escape to the sea.We need to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them.We need to know the importance of big, grown trees, because living space for most of man’s fellow creatures on this planet is fighred not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic(立方体的)volumeabove the earth. In a word, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.9.The author's attitude towards the use of natural resources is _____.A.positive B.uninterested C.optimistic D.critical10.According to the author,, the greatest mistake of our forefathers was mat .A.they had no idea about scientific forestryB.they had little or no sense of environmental protectionC.they were not aware of the importance of nature studyD.they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials11.To avoid repeating the mistakes of our forefathers, the author suggests that _____.A.we plant more treesB.natural sciences be taught to everybodyC.environmental education be directed toward everyoneD.we return to nature12.How can you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?A.Our living space on the earth is getting smaller and smaller.B.Our living space should be measured in cubic volume.C.We need to take some measures to protect space.D.We must preserve good living conditions for both birds and animals.DDuring the years after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, structural engineers have been trying hard to solve a question that would otherwise have been completely unthinkable: Can building be designed to stand catastrophic blasts (攻击;爆破) by terrorists?Soon after the terrorist attacks on the twin towers, structural engineers from the University at Buffalo and the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) traveled to ground zero as part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation. They spent two days beginning the task of formulating(构思) ideas about how to design such structures and to search for clues on how to do so in buildings that were damaged, but still are standing."Our objective in visiting ground zero was to go and look at the buildings surrounding the World Trade Center, those buildings that are still standing, but that sustained damage," said Mr.Bruneau, Ph.D."Our immediate hope is that we can develop a better understanding as to why those buildings remain standing, while our long-term goal is to see whether earthquake engineering technologies can be married to existing technologies to achieve enhanced performance of buildings in the event of terrorist attacks," he added.Photographs taken by the investigators demonstrate the monumental damage to the World Trade Center towers and buildings nearby. One building ablock away from the towers remains standing, but was badly damaged."This building is many meters away from the World Trade Center and yet we see a column (柱子) there that used to be part of that building," explained A.Whittaker, Ph.D."The column became a missile that shot across the road, through the window and through the floor." ,The visit to the area also brought some surprises, according to the engineers. Reinhorn, Ph.D.noted that "earthquake shaking has led to the collapse of buildings in the past.Solutions developed for earthquake-resistant design may apply to blast engineering and terrorist-resistant design.Part of our mission now is to transfer these solutions and to develop new ones where none exist at present."1 3.The question raised in the first paragraph is one __ .A.that was asked by structural engineers a month agoB.that is too difficult for structural engineers a month agoC.that was never thought of before the terrorist attackD.that terrorists are eager to find a solution to14.The column mentioned by Dr.Whittaker _ __.A.was part of the building close to the World Trade CenterB.was part of me World Trade CenterC.was shot through me window and the floor of the World Trade Center D.damaged many buildings near the World Trade Center15.A surprising discovery made by the investigators during their visit to ground zero is that___.A.floors in the faraway buildings remained undamagedB.some floor framing systems demonstrate resistance to explosion C.complex floor framing systems are more blast resistantD.floors in one of the buildings were pierced by tons of debris1 6.What Dr.Reinhorn said in the last paragraph may imply all the following EXCEPT that .A.blast engineers should develop new solutions for terror-resistant designB.blast engineering can borrow technologies developed forterror-resistant designC.solutions developed for earthquake-resistant design may apply to terrorist resistant designD.blast engineering emerges as a totally new branch of scienceEToday, mere's hardly an aspect of our life that isn't being upended by the tons of information available on the hundreds of millions of sites crowding the Internet, not to mention its ability to keep us in constant touch with each other via electronic mail."If the automobile and aerospace technology had exploded at the same pace as computer and information technology," says Microsoft, "a new car would cost about $ 2 and go 600 miles on a small quantity of gas.And you could buy a Booing 747 for the cost of a pizza."Probably the biggest payoff, however, is the billions of dollars the Internet is saving companies in producing goods and serving for the needs of their customers. And even after you've moved on to your final resting place, there’s no reason those you love can't keep in touch.A company called FinalThoughts.com offers a place for you to store "afterlife e-mails" you can send to Heaven with the help of a "guardian angel.”Kids today are so computer literate that it in fact ensures the United States will remain the unchallenged leader in cyberspace for the foreseeable(能预测的) future. The arugula(芝麻菜) was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much;I could have made six salads with what I threw out.In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food waste goes against the moral grain, ” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’s cover story. It’s jaw-dropping how muchperfectly good food is thrown away—from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as t he arugula at the back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time—but for him, it’s more like 12 boxes of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished(有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries?Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think.“Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won’t eat,” Curtin says.4.What does the author want to show by telling the arugula story?A.We pay little attention to food waste.B.We waste food unintentionally at times.C.We waste more vegetables than meat.D.We have good reasons for wasting food.5.What is a consequence of food waste according to the teental harm.C.Energy shortage.D.Worldwide starvation.6.WhatdoesCurtin’scompanydo?A.It produces kitchen equipment.B.It turns rotten arugula into clean fuel.C.It helps local farmers grow fruits.D.It makes meals out of unwanted food.7.What does Curtin suggest people do?A.Buy only what is needed.B.Reduce food consumption.C.Go shopping once a week.D.Eat in restaurants less often.C(全国甲卷)WheretoEatinBangkokBangkok is a highly desirable destination for food lovers. Bodily processes can be directly measured by 18 of a polygraph(测谎仪). When a polygraph is skillfully used to 19 how we react bodily with what we are 20 , it is called a "lie detector". Bodily processes can also be measured 21 . This is what we do when we observe someone blushing (脸红). However, we are not always 42 of what bodily processes respond to. Measuring action or behavior is the other way researchers assess the 23 . 24 , one measure of fear of snakes is how 25 a person will go to the snake. Another procedure is to have a person 26 how afraid he is, or how he feels, in this way, researchers have 27 the so-called "fear thermometer" to assess a person's fear. 28 our everyday living, we do very much the same thing. Only not too 29 . We react to what a person does, what he says, 30 he says it, and how he looks. Is he smiling? Is his voice trembling? We put all this 31 together to infer what a person is feeling. 32 , we do not always act as we feel. Sometimes we do things that we don't feel like doing. 33 we say we feel one way and then we act another. Actors, for example, successfully learn to "make believe" emotions, or learn to 34 them.
