The journey is a matter of 281 steps. Bu t I used the car. And I wasn’t in any hurry, either, I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis. It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune(免疫的), for I was bred in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as good day’s walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as a sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship. And the effect was lasting. When I was 45 years old I raced –and beat—a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Stature of Liberty.Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrhams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercise. A person who avoids exercise is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And walking is an ideal form of exercise--- the most familiar and natural of all.It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flower, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world. He cannotlearn in a car.The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don’t dare to approach Nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.I say that the green of forests is the mind’s best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting.5. What was life like when the author was young?A. People usually went around on foot.B. people often walked 25 miles a dayC. People used to climb the Statue of Liberty.D. people considered a ten-hour walk as a hardship.6. The author mentions Henry Thoreau to prove thatA. middle-aged people like getting back to natureB. walk ing in nature helps enrich one’s mindC. people need regular exercise to keep fitD. going on foot prevents heart disease7. What is compared to “a steel river〞 in Paragraph6?A. A queue of carsB. A ray of traffic lightC. A flash of lightningD. A stream of people8. What is the author’s intention of writing this passage?A. To tell people to reflect more on life.B. To recommend people to give up drivingC. To advise people to do outdoor activitiesD. To encourage people to return to walking参考答案5-8.A BADCChoosing the Right Resolution (决定)Millions of Americans began 2021 with the same resolution they started 2021 with, a goal of losing weight. However, setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake. To reach our goal of losing weight --- the output, we need to control what we eat --- the input ( 输入). That is, we tend to care about the output but not to control the input. This is a bad way to construct goals. The alternative is to focus your resolution on the input. Instead of resolving to lose weight, try an actionable resolution: “I’ll stop having dessert for lunch,〞or “I’ll walk every day for 20 minutes.〞 Creating a goal that focuses on a well-specified input will likely be more effective than concentrating on the outcome.Recently a new science behind incentives (鼓励) , including in education, has been discussed. For example, researcher Roland Fryer wanted to see what works best in motivating children to do better in school. In some cases, he gave students incentives based on input, like reading certain books, while in others, theincentives were based on output, like results on exams. His main finding was that incentives increased achievement when based on input but had no effect on output. Fryer’s conclusion was th at the intensives for inputs might be more effective because students do not know how to do better on exam, aside from general rules like “study harder.〞 Reading certain books, on the other hand, is a well-set task over which they have much more control. As long as you have direct control over your goal, you have a much higher chance of success. And it’s easier to start again if you fail, because you know exactly what you need to do.If you want to cut down on your spending, a good goal would be making morning coffee at home instead of going to a cafe, for example. This is a well-specified action-based goal for which you can measure your success easily. Spending less money isn’t a goal because it’s too general. Similarly, if you want to spend more tim e with your family, don’t stop with this general wish. Think about an actionable habit that you could adopt and stick to, like a family movie night every Wednesday. In the long run, these new goals could become a habit.9. The writer thinks that setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake because_______ .A. it is hard to achieve for most AmericansB. it is focused too much on the resultC. it is dependent on too many thingsD. it is based on actionable decisions10. In Roland Fryer’s research, so me students did better than the others because_________ .A. they obeyed all the general rulesB. they paid more attention to examsC. they were motivated by their classmatesD. they were rewarded for reading some books11. According to the writer, which of the following statements is a good goal?A. “I’ll give up dessert.〞B. “I’ll study harder.〞C. “I’ll cut down my expense〞D. “I’ll spend more time with my family〞12. The writer strongly believes that we should ________ .A. develop good habits and focus on the outcomeB. be optimistic about final goals and stick to themC. pick specific actions that can be turned into good habitsD. set ambitious goals that can balance the input and output参考答案9-12BDACDThe baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert 〔警觉〕. Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze〔凝视〕 starts to lose its focus — until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns: she looks at itfor twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise 〔同样地〕when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.13. Babies are sensitive to the change in______.A. the size of cardsB. the colour of picturesC. the shape of patternsD. the number of objects14. Why did the researchers test the babies with drumbeats?A. To reduce the difficulty of the experiment.B. To see how babies recognize sounds.C. To carry their experiment further.D. To keep the babies’ interest.15. Where does this text probably come from?A. Science fiction.B. Children’s literature.C. An advertisement.D. A science report.参考答案13-15DCD。

高考英语二轮阅读理解三月特训_2_01
语鹅市安置阳光实验学校高考英语二轮复习三月精品练习阅读理解How do successful people think? What drives them? Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share.First of all, successful people never blame someone or something outside of themselves for their failure to go ahead. They realize that their future lies in their own hands. They understand that they cannot control things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions. They take responsibility for their life and regard this as one of the most empowering things they can do. Perhaps what most separates successfu l people from others is that they live life “on purpose”— they are doing what they believe they are put here to do. In their opinion , having a purpose in their life is the most important element(因素) that enables them to become fully functioning people. They hold that when they live their life on purpose, their main concern is to do the job right. They love what they do—and it shows. People want to do business with them because of their commitment(忠诚). To live their life on purpose, successful people find a cause they believe in and create a business around it. Besides, they never easily give up. Once they have set up goals in their life, they are willing to work hard whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Top achievers always bear in mind what they don’t have.Rather than be negative or depressing, they use the knowledge to encourage themselves on and go after what they want energetically and passionately.1.The underlined word “it (in Paragraph 2)” refers to “______”.A. the main concern of successful peopleB. the job that successful people doC. the commitment with which successful people do their jobsD. the business that successful people do with other people2.By living life “on purpose”, successful people can do the following EXCEPT ______.A. do a lot of workB. concentrate on their jobsC. do business with many peopleD. control things in life 3.Successful people know that ____.A. they can control nature.B. they are not allowed to blame peopleC. they can control their own thoughts.D. they can control others’ actions4.A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington, D.C.Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an elde rly blind woman with her handextended. In a natural reflex, I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it on her hand without even looking at her.I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money.I just need help finding the post office.”In an instant, I realized what I had done.I judged another person simply for what I assumed she had to be.I hated what I saw in myself. This incident re-awakened my belief in humility(谦恭), even though I’d lost it for a moment. The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant.I left Honduras and arrived in the U.S.at the age of 15.I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother and sister, and a strong, serious-minded mother.Through the years, I have been a dishwasher, mechanic and pizza delivery driver among many other humble jobs, and eventually I became a network engineer. In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice (偏见).I remember a time, at age 17 ——I worked as a waiter, and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me.I have also witnessed the same treatment of my family and friends, so I know what it’s like, and I should have known better. But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the streets of Washington, D.C., cured me of my blindness. She reminded me of my belief in humility and to always keep my eyes and heart open.By the way, I helped that lady to the post office. And in writing this essay, I hope to thank her for the priceless lesson.【小题1】We can learn from the first two paragraphs that _______.A.the author regretted his act of prejudiceB.the blind woman needed the money badlyC.the author was as poor as the blind womanD.the author was a native American【小题2】According to Paragraph 4, hearing the father’s words, the author was probably _______.A.rather hurt B.very comes trueC.A Belief that will never changeD.A priceless lesson in the streetScientists Alan M.Goldberg and Thomas Hartung describe recent advances in replacing the use of animals in toxicology(毒物学)testing.Improvements in cell and tissue culture technologies, for example, allow a growing number of tests to be performed on human cells alone.Computer models are becoming increasingly complex and many could one day become more accurate than trials in living animals.Since the late 1990s,Huntingdon Life Sciences--a company that conducts testing of substances on animals conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration—has become a proving ground for aggressive strategies by animal-rights militants (好战分子).At a hearing,a Senate.committee listened to testimony(证词) against Huntingdon employees and financial institutions providing services to the company. One experimentation witness at the hearing insisted that any means necessary were justified(辩护) to spare animals’ lives;he has previously accepted the idea of murder to that end.Use of animals in testing and in biomedical research continues to be necessary in many instances and is ethically(伦理道德地)preferable to experimenting on humans or giving up cures that could save human lives. But for the sake of people and animals alike, the development and acceptance of animal substitutes deserve enthusiastic support. In some instances, substitutes are already thought as good or better than animals, but supervising agencies(监督机构)have yet to catch up.In both the European Union and the U.S.,scientists and companies wanting to use the new alternative tests complain that regulatory standards for proving a drug or chemical to be safe for humans force the continued use of animals.Thus,animal-loving Americans might turn to persuading the EPA and the FDA to speed validation(确认)of new methods so that they can be more widely employed. And animal advocates(保护者) who want to influence business could consider investing in the small biotech’s and large pharmaceutical(药品的) companies that are working to develop alternatives to animals in research.5._____ plays a leading role in replacing the use of animals in testing.A.Huntingdon Life Sciences B.Improvement in technologies C.Animal-fights militants D.Scientists Alan and Thomas 6.Accordingly, the animal-rights militants hold the view that_____.A.animals shouldn’t be used in toxicology testingB.animals should enjoy equal rights with human beingsC.animals should live wildly and freelyD.we should protect animals from being killed casually7.From the passage,we can find _____.A.the use of animals in testing has been stopped abruptlyB.animal substitutes are not preferableC.supervising standards contribute to the continued use of animals in testingD.only Huntingdon Life Sciences is accused8.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.Saving animals and people.B.The new trend in toxicology testingC.The use of animals in testing is against human natureD.New technology changes the fate of animals9.The writer’s attitude towards replacing the use of animals in toxicology is____.A.arbitrary(武断的,随意的) B.pessimisticC.indifferent(不关心的) D.optimisticA growing number of college students are applying to take entry tests for medical and dental (牙科的) schools among increasing graduate unemployment in Improvisation is an important part of jazz. This means that the musicians make the music up as they go along, or create the music on the spot. 高考英语二轮复习考前三个月专题一阅读理解细做模拟试题,题型分类突破十二文章结构之篇章结构题
文章构造之篇章构造题AThe term “helicopter parents〞refers to “a style of parents who are over focused on their children〞.Helicopter parents are always making a big push to provide children with every opportunity to succeed, from baby steps at age 1,homework at age 8,college application at age 18,employment issues at age 25 to family problems at age 30,40 or even older. They constantly shadow the child, always directing his behavior, allowing him zero alone time.Helicopter parenting can develop for a number of reasons.Worries about the economy, the job market, and the world in general can push parents toward taking more control over their child’s life in an attempt to protect them.Adults who felt unloved or ignored as children can overcompensate their own children. When parents see other overinvolved parents,it can cause a similar response. They feel that if they don’t involve themselves in their children’s lives, they are bad parents. The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire. To give an example, the house where Mary lived with roommates was broken into and things were stolen.Marycalled the landlord(房东) to install an alarm system, but before she could finish the negotiations(协商),her mother rushed in and demanded action.“I felt like my mother ruined my communication with our landlord. We could have gotten it done ourselves. She was well intended but only made me feel annoyed and defeated,〞says Mary.Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite. In the long run parents are actually damaging their child’s basic skills to deal with matters independently. It makes the child feel lacking in confidence, less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own. They’re winning the battle, but actually losing the war.A.To do something good for their children.B.To make their children not ignored.C.To help their children find a good job.D.To get rid of the pressure from other parents.答案A解析细节理解题。

2013年高考第二轮复习英语山东版专题升级训练十四阅读理解(三)第一节阅读理解A(2012山东日照二模,B)Though she is already one of the most famous pop stars of the 21st century, you've probably never heard of a 26yearold singersongwriter called of Stefani Germanotta—but that's only because almost everyone knows her by her stage name,Lady Gaga.Born in New York City in 1986,Lady Gaga enjoyed music, singing and dancing from an early age:she started playing the piano when she was only four years old and loved performing in musicals at high school. At 17 she went to a special school for the arts but later left because she wanted to become a professional singer as soon as possible. She became a global star with her first album The Fame in 2008 and followed it in 2009 with The Fame Monster.Earlier this year she released a single,“Born this Way”,which broke the record for quickest sales for a piece of music on iTunes, with one million downloads in only five days. Her third album, also called Born this Way,went on sale in May,2011.Because of how much money she earns, how much she is written and talked about in the media, and how many internet searches are made with her name,Forbes magazine recently put her at Number One in its list of the “world's most powerful celebrities”.Most music critics say that what makes Lady Gaga's music outstanding are her strong voice and also the strong electronic rhythm of most of her songs, which makes them popular in nightclubs. They also say her music often sounds a bit like the work of other artists, and she herself is quite open about the fact that singers such as Madonna have been a big influence on her.More original than her music, perhaps,is the way she looks.A big part of her image is her outlandish(奇异的)clothes, with her strangest piece of clothing probably having been a dress made partly out of meat, which she wore once in 2010.Part of what has made Lady Gaga so famous so quickly is the way she has used social media. She has over 30 million Facebook friends, for example, and almost 10 million followers on Twitter.1.Some people complain about Lady Gaga's music in the following except that ______.A.she is often dressed strangely and differently from othersB.the electric rhythm helps her too much in the performancesC.her music is in some way copied from othersD.she has been influenced by Madonna's singing style2.What can we learn about “iTunes”?It's ______.A.a single album of popular songs on saleB.a mobile phone which shows live music performancesC.a center where pop stars gather togetherD.a software used to download music from the Internet3.Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?A.She gained a lot of money by playing the piano as a child.B.She showed special interest in music at a very early age.C.She is much better known as “Lady Gaga” rather than Stefani Germanotta.D.She once came out first in the list of the Forbes magazine.4.From Paragraph 2 we know that she left the art school ______.A.for the lack of confidenceB.because she was sure of her future successC.because she found it was not good enough for her developmentD.to find more chances to earn money5.What is the best title of this text?A.A Talent in MusicB.A Singer and SongwriterC.A Patrick Hyland says it can even work off the warmth of your pocket. The first time “it would take approximately seven hours to reach full charge, then after that it's continuously charging by keeping the phone in areas between 86 degrees and 104 degrees Fahrenheit.” That's one hot pocket. He's put a thermogenerator(热偶发电器)inside the phone that transforms heat into electric potential energy. To better conduct the heat to that little power plant in your pocket, the ECu(E for energy,Cu for copper)is coated by copper backing with heat sinks like those normally used to keep electronics from overheating.Nokia doesn't have current plans to build the phone,so for now it remains a concept. But Hyland says he's open to anyone who wants to cooperate. For Americans this technology would certainly be convenient. It would also save a bit on energy bills and waste.“Annually, unwanted phone chargers produce 51,000 tons of waste in addition to the greenhouse gases created by the production of the electricity needed to charge them,” Hyland says.So a chargerfree phone is also a green phone.Though adapting our plugin habits would help a group of people, most cell phone related energy use comes from leaving your charger plugged in all day unnecessarily. The real potential for chargerfree cell phone technology is what it could enable places where plugging in isn't an option, like rural areas in the developing world.Cell phones are spreading faster than power lines and bringing with them countless opportunities, aid and health advances.A phone like the ECu,if it ever comes to be,would enable all manner of expanded aid and development by phone projects.Let's hope Patrick finds a partner.6.What do we know about the ECu phone?A.It doesn't have a battery or a charger.B.It is properly marketed and sells well.C.It's continuously charging from any area.D.It has a highly conductive copper cover.7.What's the function of the underlined part “heat sinks” in Paragraph 2?A.To give off heat. B.To measure heat.C.To turn up heat. D.To supply heat.8.A chargerfree phone is friendly to the environment because ______.A.it is just a concept B.it is selfchargeableC.it brings convenience D.it is no waste of money9.From the last two paragraphs we can know that ______.A.Patrick is not ready to cooperate with othersB.power lines spread every corner of the worldC.phone projects may help solve the energy crisisD.phones like the ECu have huge potential benefits10.What is the best title of the text?A.Designer Patrick HylandB.Nokia Concept Phone on SaleC.Charging Your Phone from PocketsD.Benefiting from Phone TechnologyCIt's a nightmare for Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST):within a week, two students committed suicide by jumping off dorm buildings.Officials from the university are reluctant to give interviews.“We had a hard time calming down students who were sho cked at the suicides,” said Zhang Jingyuan, one official of HUST.“Media coverage may arouse some students' negative emotions again.Suicide can be contagious,” Zhang said. The university reacted promptly to the first suicide on October 23.Advisors and clas s leaders conducted dormtodorm checks to find students suffering depression. Then psychologists offered oneonone counseling to them.Notice boards publicizing tips for identifying peers' mental problems and offering help were set up in front of dorm buildings.Leaflets carrying similar information were handed out to each dorm. However, the second suicide came seven days later. Both students were described as men of few words.Their schoolmates didn't see anything to indicate suicide.Zhang revealed that the two students had been bothered by mental disorders. But the school didn't know this until the students' close friends outside school and their parents unveiled the truth after the suicides.According to Zhang, there are only three fulltime counselors working in the university's counseling center for its 60,000 students. He complained,“It's unrealistic to rely only on counselors to detect students' mental problems.”Effective prevention comes from longterm education for life instead of temporary intervention to meet an emergency, said Hu Yi'an.Hu delivers a course of lectures on life and death at Guangzhou University. He worries that universities have paid little attention to education for life.“Education for life helps students respect and love life so they won't resort to ending their lives when they have difficulties,” said Hu.According to Hu,the principles can be incorporated into everyday teaching.Hu is also concerned that some universities are conveying discriminatory message that will hold back students from seeking help. When HUST conducted the dormtodorm examination, students with poor academic performance were paid special attention. In March,Peking University also releaseda controversial policy, which required teachers to have a chat with students “with biased thinking”.However,Hu suggested that students step out of their comfort zone to seek reallife communication.11.The underlined word “reluctant” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.A.eager B.unhappyC.unwilling D.afraid12.Why did the advisors and arouse some students' negative emotions again.D.Two suicides within a week is really a nightmare for the university.15.What's the main idea of the passage?A.Two students of HUST committed suicide.B.What can we do to prevent the student's suicide?C.The reasons why the students committed suicide.D.The dangers in the universities in China.DMost young people enjoy some forms of physical activities. It may be walking, cycling or swimming,or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey, golf, tennis,or it may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion(热情,激情)for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activities to which men give their leisure.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no manmade rules,as there are for such games as golf and football. There are,of course, rules of a different kind, which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from manmade rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports,we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”.We would be mistaken in this assumption. There are,it is true,no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than men.He has to fight the forces of nature. This sport requires high mental and physical capacities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year.A skier is probably past his prime(全盛时期)by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty orsixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men,but they probably climb with more skills and less wasted efforts, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.16.Mountaineering is a sport which involves ______.A.hardship B.coldC.physical risks D.all the above17.The main difference between a sport and a game lies in origin of the ______.A.uniform B.activityC.rules D.skills18.Mountaineering is also a team sport because ______.A.it involves rulesB.it involves matches between teamsC.it requires mental and physical qualitiesD.mountaineers depend on each other while climbing19.Which of the following is TRUE?A.Mountaineers compete against each other.B.Mountaineers compete against other teams.C.Mountaineers compete against nature.D.Mountaineers compete against international standard.20.What is the best title for the text?A.MountaineeringB.Mountain ClimbersC.Mountaineering Is Different From Golf And FootballD.Mountaineering Is More Dangerous Than Other Sports第二节阅读表达(2012山东泰安期末)[1]“Can't hold a candle to” is a popular expression. It is from the time before electricity, when people used candles for light. The master who lived in a big house would have a servant light his way by holding a candle. The expression means that the person who cannot hold a candle to you is not fit even to be your servant. Now,it means such a person cannot compare or compete.[2] “Hold out” is an expression one hears often in sports reports and labor news.It means to be considered true after an investigation. The same driver late for work could say,“My boss did not believe a hold up held me up.But the police confirmed what I said so my story held up.”[5] “Hold on” is used to ask a telephone caller to wait and not______ his telephone. If you call a library to ask for a book, the librarian might say,“Hold on while I look f or it.”[6]Our final expression is - 1 - 辽宁灯塔市2016高考英语二轮阅读理解训练【3】 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A.B.C和D项中,选出最佳选项。 (We Should All Grow Fat and Be Happy) Here’s a familiar version of the boy-meets-girl situation. A young man has at last plucked up courage to invite a dazzling young lady out to dinner. She has accepted his invitation and he is overjoyed. He is determined to take her to the best restaurant in town, even if it means that he will have to live on memories and hopes during the month to come. When they get to the restaurant, he discovers that this ethereal creature is on a diet. She mustn’t eat this and she mustn’t that. Oh, but of course, she doesn’t want to spoil his enjoyment. Let him by all means eat as much fattening food as he wants: it’s the surest way to an early grave. They spend a truly memorable evening together and never see each other again. What a miserable lot dieters are! You can always recognize them from the sour expression on their faces. They spend most of their time turning their noses up at food. They are forever consulting calorie charts; gazing at themselves in mirrors; and leaping on to weighing-machines in the bathroom. They spend a lifetime fighting a losing battle against spreading hips, protruding tummies and double chins. Some wage all-out war on FAT. Mere dieting is not enough. They exhaust themselves doing exercises, sweating in sauna baths, being pummeled and massaged by weird machines. The really wealthy diet-mongers pay vast sums for ‘health cures’. For two weeks they can enter a nature clinic and be starved to death for a hundred guineas a week. Don’t think it’s only the middle-aged who go in for these fads either. Many of these bright young things you see are suffering from chronic malnutrition: they are living on nothing but air, water and the goodwill of God. Dieters undertake to starve themselves of their own free will; so why are they so miserable? Well, for one thing, they’re always hungry. You can’t be hungry and happy at the same time. All the horrible concoctions they eat instead of food leave them permanently dissatisfied. Wonderfood is a complete food, the advertisement says. ‘Just dissolve a teaspoonful in water„’. A complete food it may be, but not quite - 2 -
as complete as a juicy steak. And, of course, they’re always miserable because they feel so guilty. Hunger just proves too much for them and in the end they lash out and devour five huge guilt-inducing cream cakes at a sitting. And who can blame them? At least three times a day they are exposed to temptation. What utter torture it is always watching others tucking into piles of mouth-watering food while you munch a water biscuit and sip unsweetened lemon juice! What’s all this self-inflicted torture for? Saintly people deprive themselves of food to attain a state of grace. Unsaintly people do so to attain a state of misery. It will be a great day when all the dieters in the world abandon their slimming courses; when they hold out their plates and demand second helpings!
