With the invention of modern laptops and the advances in broadband internet access and communication software, there is no longer a need to work in the office, more and more people are starting to work from home. Opinions on this new trend vary as there are both pros and cons of working from home.

The disadvantages are obvious. To begin with, you may feel lonely at home since you lack social interaction and face to face communication with colleagues. Besides, there are many distractions at home: your wife and kids may knock on your door or call you any time. You yourself may want to stop and have a cup of coffee or find something to eat from time to time. Without the official discipline, you may even be tempted to play computer games, what’s more, it may be very monotonous if you have to stay at home all day long.

On the other hand, many people think the pros of working at home outweigh the cons. The most obvious benefit is flexibility. You don’t have to wake up to an alarm clock early in the morning, and you can work any time you want any in any way you want. For those who are more productive at night, working from home must be a paradise. Moreover, without a boss supervising you over your shoulder, you fell less stress. Like to work in pajamas? Fine. Like to listen to heavy metal at the highest volume while you are designing? Go for it. Also, people that work in the home environment value immensely the extra time they can spend with their loved ones. As a mom or dad, you will be in a much better position to educate and take care of your children.

Pros:

●Flexibility.No need to wake up to an alarm clock early in the morning. Some people are

more productive at night, so they can work at night, during the day they can take a break whenever they feel like it.

●Increased productivity. A typical office environment is noisy, people are talking, phones are

ringing, co-workers are coming by to chat.

●New technology can improve online interaction. Software for virtual teams, better

brainstorming tools, video conferencing, etc, provides opportunities for virtual collaboration.

●More family time. You can enjoy the extra time to spend with your loved ones. You are in a

much better position to educate an take care of your children.

●More physical exercise. Working in an office, you can have physical exercise only early in the

morning or in the evening, which is not convenient for many people. Working from home , you will have more opportunities for a workout.

● A more balanced diet at home. At home you eat less fast food.

●Able to work from anywhere. You can move around freely. You can work online in different

parts of the country or even in different countries.

●No commute. You no longer have to spend 30 minutes or even an hour to travel to work and

back.

●No dress code. No need to put on a suit. Some people even admit to work in their pajamas.

●Saving money. You can save money on gasoline, food and suits. It’s cheaper to eat at home

than in a cheap cafeteria.

●Protecting the environment. By commuting less, we save energy and reduce pollution. Cons:

●Lack of competitive spirit. Without colleagues’ competition, you may get lazy.

●Distraction.Your parents, wife or children may interrupt you for a small matter. You may

want to play computer games, open the refrigerator to find something to eat, go out to enjoy the beautiful sunshine, etc.

●Lack of a boss’s stimulation. Some people may become lazy without a boss to motivate

them into working hard.

●Boredom from lack of change.If you work hard and live in the same place, you may get

bored.

●You never leave work. Working at home, you can never work. Some people will be tempted

to check e-mail and work whenever they have a chance.

●Lack of regular paycheck.Many who from home receive their income on a project basis

without a monthly salary and do not enjoy a stable income.

●Lack of clients’ trust. If clients find you work at home, they may not trust you. Therefore,

many who work from home prefer to go to their client s’ office to meet with them.

●Difficulty to getting a loan.If you work on the internet with no fixed monthly salary or a

company to back you up, it is difficult for you to get a mortgage to buy a home. Exercise 2 page 67

in favor of interpersonal relationships:

●No work can be done without human beings, so no one can afford to overlook the factor of

human relationships.

●In contemporary society, the division of work in increasingly detailed, it is difficult for one

person alone to accomplish a complicated task. Thus, cooperation and interpersonal relationship are of vital importance.

●Human beings are emotional animals, if they feel pleased, they are ready to help you,.some

may even be willing to make great sacrifices to assist you. If they become hostile, they will make it difficult for you to accomplish your task.

●If there is little friction among the employees of a company, things tend to proceed smoothly,

and neither time nor material is lost.

●Similarly, it is often said that one’s emotion quotient is more important than one’s

intelligence quotient.

in favor of practical abilities:

●When a group a incapable nice people is put together, they may not be able to finish the

prescribed tasks. On the other hand, when a company employs a group of capable, aggressive persons, they may work wonders.

●When someone's close friend makes a serious mistake, he /she tend to ignore it, this is

harmful to the company as a whole.

●If some people from close relationships among themselves, they tend to neglect those

outside their circle , thus damaging their interests.

●If you possess an important skill that can help your boss make money while your colleges do

not have this skills, naturally the boss will value you above your colleagues.

●Some people believe it is easy for you to be nice to you r colleagues, but it may not be easy

to improve your technical know-how.

●Most of the people who have succeeded received a good education in the first place.

Obviously, professional knowledge plays a big role. Many people who did not receive a college education have a nice personality, but few of them climb high on the business ladder.
