Leading As an Introvert
When it comes to introvert, people often consider it the equalivant to shyness, which carries a lot
of negative connotations. However, being an introvert myself, I think the myth that introverts are
deprived of the ability of being a good leader should be busted. According to scientific studies
and my own experience, I’m convinced that introverts can make good leaders as wells as
extroverts.
In order to tag a firm foundation for my argument, I would like to first offer a definition of
introverts. The first introduction of introvert and extrovert into psychology is Carl Jung, who
published a bombshell of a book called Psychological Types. The book has helped in popularized
these two terms. Generally, introverts are drawn to the inner world, like thought and feeling,
while the extroverts focus on the external life, about people and activities. Such idea, which was
brought in by Jung, also reveals itself in personality test like Myers-Briggs. If we compare people
to batteries, then introverts recharge their energy by being alone, and extroverts, in the opposite
way, recharge by socializing. In a word, introverts and extroverts differ in the level of outside
stimulation that they need to function well. On average, the introvert need far less simulation
than extrovert. When we understand the difference in driving forces, the difference in habits and
behaviours seem to be much more acceptable. For example, extroverts tend to tackle
assignments quickly; they are comfortable at multi-tasking and risk taking . Introverts often like to
work out a problem in a more slowly and deliberately way. In fact, introvert not necessarily
means shyness, though sometimes can find those traits overlap on somebody like T.S.Eliat.
Personally, from my own experience, I think introverts can be good leaders, even outstanding
ones, as long as they acquire some necessary skills. The occasion I found I learned most was in a
project in management class. Together with other 4 classmates we were asked to demonstrate a
type of organization.
We were asked to drew a lattery, and fortunately, I was chosen to be team leader. There are 5
people, me included, in a team. Amongst them, 3teammates are friends that I’ve cooperated
with for a few times already, and one student is a classmate that I’m not familiar with. The
project took us about a month, during which we have brainstormed, arranged, prepared and
demonstrated our idea. In the process, I confront with some difficulties that every introvert
leader might come across.
For example, in order to prepare properly, I began a little bit earlier than other teams. However, I
meet a few problems because different people have different pace in tackle their tasks. As a
result, I specify my requirement and the deadline in a clear way, and always keep everyone in
formed of what the teams are doing now. From the prospect, I found it extremely useful to keep
a good communication with other people. Though too much socializing tends to drain introverts’
energy, It helps to acquire some communication skills and make good use of modern technology
such as QQ, We chat on E-mail. Also, to keep up with a good contact. It’s unavoidable sometimes
to have meetings. Personally, I do not like meetings, because if not carefully arranged, the
meeting can be very lengthy and off the point, and even damage the morale in some extreme
cases. Therefore, when preparing for the project, I arrange a meeting about once a week. First
meeting is rather time consuming, as we have to decide on the topic of the presentation, and we
have to brain storming in order to get the best ideas.
