英语翻译中那些冗余的词
如无必要、勿增实体。

（以下案例来自Joan Pinkham的《中式英语之鉴》。

）
阅读这些案例，我们会发现，很多翻译中的“冗余词”大半来自于原文的表达习惯——反过来对我们中文的写作、说话，其实也有很多启发。

比如the fact that...（……这一事实），我们高中生很熟悉。

但本书引用Strunk教授的说法，认为应该把它彻底“revise out”。

类似的例子还有situation in which，the condition where，这些学习定语从句时，经常拿来“考倒”学生的难题。

其实也是典型的“废话”，唯一作用，就是让简单的结构变得更复杂，让作者和读者都更难驾驭。

例如这句话：
The reason why English has changed over time lies in the fact that when cultures meet and communicate with each other all languages change and develop．
完全可以这样说：
The reason why English has changed over time is that when cultures meet and communicate with each other all languages change and develop．
下面这三个例子也是比较典型的：因为一个多余的词，导致结构变得复杂：
（1）为完成总任务而努力：
to strive for the fulfillment of the general task，简化为：
to fulfill the general task。

（2）情况仍然是敌强我弱：
The situation is still one where the enemy is stronger than us，简化为：
the enemy is stronger than us
（3）民主是一个需要详细讨论的问题：
Democracy is a subject that should be discussed in detail，简化为：
Democracy should be discussed in detail
有没有看出一些熟悉的中文表达习惯：“……这种情况”、“……的问题”，这类词其实都是没有意义的。

）
名词冗余的三种常见情况：
一、意义重复的名词（划线的词为多余）
二、无意义的范畴名词（划线的词为多余）
三、中文习惯的双名词并列（划线的词为多余）
以上对应的英文，保留其中一个名词即可。

书中所纠正的，很多恰是我们中学给学生反复强化的“正确答案”。

大概最早建立起国内英语教材体系的专家们，大多是出身于政府的翻译机构；而官方文件的用词，多有此特点，比如今天我们还熟悉的“重视……工作”、“强化……落实”、“狠抓……任务”、“贯彻落实……”
中式公文的套话多见冗余词。

浸润久了，思维难免受左右，久之便形成独特的“中式标准英语”说法。

当然这些纯属臆断，权作笑谈。
