Landfills

You have just finished your meal at a fast food restaurant and you throw your uneaten food, foo d wrappers, drink cups, utensils and napkins into the trash can. You don't think about that waste again. On trash pickup day in your neighborhood, you push your can out to the curb, and work ers dump the contents into a big truck and haul it away. You don't have to think about that was te again, either. But maybe you have wondered, as you watch the trash truck pull away, just wh

ere that garbage ends up.

Americans generate trash at an astonishing rate of four pounds per day per person, which transl ates to 600,000 tons per day or 210 million tons per year' This is almost twice as much trash p er person as most other major countries. What happens to this trash? Some gets recycled (回收利用) or recovered and some is burned, but the majority is buried in landfills.

How Much Trash Is Generated?

Of the 210 million tons of trash, or solid waste, generated in the United States annually, about 5 6 million tons, or 27 percent, is either recycled ( glass, paper products, plastic, metals ) or comp osted (做成堆肥) (yard waste). The remaining trash, which is mostly unrecyclable, is discarded.

How Is Trash Disposed of?

The trash production in the United States has almost tripled since 1960. This trash is handled in various ways. About 27 percent of the trash is recycled or composted, 16 percent is burned an d 57 percent is buried in landfills. The amount of trash buried in landfills has doubled since 1960. The United States ranks somewhere in the middle of the major countries ( United Kingdom, Ca nada, Germany, France and Japan) in landfill disposal. The United Kingdom ranks highest, buryin

g about 90 percent of its solid waste in landfills.

What Is a Landfill?

There are two ways to bury trash;

? Dump—an open hole in the ground where trash is buried and that is full of various animals (ra ts, mice, birds). (This is most people's idea of a landfill!)

? Landfill—carefully designed structure built into or on top of the ground in which trash is isolated from the surrounding environment (groundwater, air, rain). This isolation is accomplished with a

bottom liner and daily covering of soil.

Sanitary landfill—landfill that uses a clay liner to isolate the trash from the environment Municipal solid waste ( MSW ) landfill—landfill that uses a synthetic (plastic) liner to isolate the trash from

the environment

The purpose of a landfill is to bury the trash in such a way that it will be isolated from groundw ater, will be kept dry and will not be in contact with air. Under these conditions, trash will not de compose(腐烂) much. A landfill is not like a compost pile, where the purpose is to bury trash in

such a way that it will decompose quickly.

Proposing the Landfill

For a landfill to be built, the operators have to make sure that they follow certain steps. In most parts of the world, there are regulations that govern where a landfill can be placed and how it can operate. The whole process begins with someone proposing the landfill.

In the United States, taking care of trash and building landfills are local government responsibiliti es. Before a city or other authority can build a landfill, an environmental impact study must be d

one on the proposed site to determine;

? the area of land necessary for the landfill

? the composition of the underlying soil and bedrock

? the f low of surface water over the site

? the impact of the proposed landfill on the local environment and wildlife

? the historical value of the proposed site

Building the Landfill

Once the environmental impact study is complete, the permits are granted and the funds have b een raised, then construction begins. First, access roads to the landfill site must be built if they do not already exist. These roads will be used by construction equipment, sanitation (环卫.) servi ces and the general public. After roads have been built, digging can begin. In the North Wake C ounty Landfill, the landfill began 10 feet below the road surface.

What Happens to Trash hi a Landfill?

Trash put in a landfill will stay there for a very long time. Inside a landfill, there is little oxygen and little moisture. Under these conditions, trash does not break down very rapidly. In fact, when old landfills have been dug up or sampled,40-year-old newspapers have been found with easily readable print. Landfills are not designed to break down trash, merely to bury it. When a landfill closes, the site, especially the groundwater, must be monitored and maintained for up to 30 year

s!

How Is a Landfill Operated?

A landfill, such as the North Wake County Landfill, must be open and available every day. Custo mers are typically municipalities and construction companies, although residents may also use the

landfill.

Near the entrance of the landfill is a recycling center where residents can drop off recyclable ma terials (aluminum cans, glass bottles, newspapers and paper products). This helps to reduce the amount of material in the landfill. Some of these materials are banned from landfills by law beca

use they can be recycled.

As customers enter the site, their trucks are weighed at the scale house. Customers are charged tipping fees for using the site. The tipping fees vary from $ 10 to $40 per ton. These fees are used to pay for operation costs. The North Wake County Landfill has an operating budget of app roximately $4.5 million, and part of that comes from tipping fees.

Along the site, there are drop-off stations for materials that are not wanted or legally banned by the landfill. A multi-material drop-off station is used for tires, motor oil, lead-acid batteries. Some

of these materials can be recycled.

In addition, there is a household hazardous waste drop-off station for chemicals (paints, pesticide s, other chemicals) that are banned from the landfill. These chemicals are disposed of by private companies. Some paints can be recycled and some organic chemicals can be burned in furnace

s or power plants.

Other structures alongside the landfill are the borrowed area that supplies the soil for the landfill,

the runoff collection pond and methane(甲醛)station.

Landfills are complicated structures that, when properly designed and managed, serve an importa nt purpose. In the future, new technologies called bioreactors will be used to speed the breakdo wn of trash in landfills and produce more methane.

1. The passage gives a general description of the structure and use of a landfill.

2. Most of the trash that Americans generate ends up in landfills.

3. Compared with other major industrialized countries, America buries a much higher percentage

of its solid waste in landfills.

4. Landfills are like compost piles in that they speed up decomposition of the buried trash.

5. In most countries the selection of a landfill site is governed by rules and regulations.

6. In the United States the building of landfills is the job of both federal and local governments.

7. Hazardous wastes have to be treated before being dumped into landfill.

8. Typical customers of a landfill are _________________.

9. To dispose of a ton of trash in a landfill, customers have to pay a tipping fee of _______.

10. Materials that are not permitted to be buried in landfills should be dumped at ________.

Passage One

Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.

" Tear'em apart 1" " Kill the fool \" " Murder the referee ( 裁判) I "

These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let's not kid ourselves. They have been known to influenc e behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed. Volumes have been written about the w ay words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain connotations (含义) may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior. I see the term "opponent” as one of those wo rds. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports

terms.

The dictionary meaning of the term "opponent” is "adversary" ;"enemy" ;"one who opposes your i nterests. " Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. At such times, winning may dominate one's intellect, and every action, no matter how gross, may be considered justifiable. I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player's request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player proceeded to rub his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then exclaimed,

" Are they wet enough now?"

In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without c onsidering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player reacting to his opponent's intentional and illegal blocking by deliberately hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good fr iends. Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which departs from

normal behavior.

Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated ( 提升') the game to the level where it belongs, thereb y setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term " opponent" with "asso

ciate” could be an ideal way to start.

The dictionary meaning of the term " associate " is " colleague ";" friend ";" companion^ " Reflec t a moment! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term ".as

sociate” rather than "opponent. "

57. Which of the following statements best expresses the author's view?

A) The words people use can influence their behavior.

B) Unpleasant words in sports are often used by foreign athletes.

C) Aggressive behavior in sports can have serious consequences.

D) Unfair judgments by referees will lead to violence on the sports field.

58. Harsh words are spoken during games because the players ____.

A) are too eager to win

B) treat their rivals as enemies

C) are usually short-tempered and easily offended

D) cannot afford to be polite in fierce competitions

59. What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves?

A) He angrily hit the referee with a ball.

B) He refused to continue the game.

C) He claimed that the referee was unfair.

D) He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T-shirt.

60. According to the passage, players in a game may ____.

A) kick the ball across the court with force

B) lie down on the ground as an act of protest

C) deliberately throw the ball at anyone illegally blocking their way

D) keep on screaming and shouting throughout the game

61. The author hopes to have the current situation in sports improved by ____.

A) regulating the relationship between players and referees

B) calling on players to use clean language on the court

C) raising the referees' sense of responsibility

D) changing the attitude of players on the sports field

Passage Two

Questions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.

Is there enough oil beneath the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (保护区) ( ANWR) to help secure America's energy future? President Bush certainly thinks so. He has argued that tapping ANWR's oil would help ease California's electricity crisis and provide a major boost to the country's ener gy independence. But no one knows for sure how much crude oil lies buried beneath the frozen earth, with the last government survey, conducted in 1998, projecting output anywhere from 3 bi

llion to 16 billion barrels.

The oil industry goes with the high end of the range, which could equal as much as 10% of U. S. consumption for as long as six years. By pumping more than 1 million barrels a day from the reserve for the next two to three decades, lobbyists claim, the nation could cut back on imports equivalent to all shipments to the U. S. from Saudi Arabia. Sounds good. An oil boom would al so mean a multibillion-dollar windfall (意外之财) in tax revenues, royalties (开采权使用费) and leas ing fees for Alaska and the Federal Government. Best of all, advocates of drilling say, damage t o the environment would be insignificant. " We've never had a documented case of an oil rig ch asing deer out onto the pack ice," says Alaska State Representative Scott Ogan.

Not so fast, say environmentalists. Sticking to the low end of government estimates, the National Resources Defense Council says there may be no more than 3. 2 billion barrels of economically recoverable oil in the coastal plain of ANWR, a drop in the bucket that would do virtually nothin g to ease America's energy problems. And consumers would wait up to a decade to gain any b enefits, because drilling could begin only after much bargaining over leases, environmental permit s and regulatory review. As for ANWR's impact on the California power crisis, environmentalists point out that oil is responsible for only 1% of the Golden State's electricity output—and just 3%

of the nation's.

62. What does President Bush think of tapping oil in ANWR?

A) It will increase America's energy consumption.

B) It will exhaust the nation's oil reserves.

C) It will help reduce the nation's oil imports.

D) It will help secure the future of ANWR.

63. We learn from the second paragraph that the American oil industry ____.

A) shows little interest in tapping oil in ANWR

B) expects to stop oil imports from Saudi Arabia

C) tends to exaggerate America's reliance on foreign oil

D) believes that drilling for oil in ANWR will produce high yields

64. Those against oil drilling in ANWR argue that ____.

A) it will drain the oil reserves in the Alaskan region

B) it can do little to solve U. S. energy problems

C) it can cause serious damage to the environment

D) it will not have much commercial value

65. What do the environmentalists mean by saying "Not so fast "(Line 1, Para. 3)?

A) Don't be too optimistic.

B) Don't expect fast returns.

C) The oil drilling should be delayed.

D) Oil exploitation takes a long time.

66. It can be learned from the passage that oil exploitation beneath ANWR's frozen earth ____.

A) involves a lot of technological problems

B) remains a controversial issue

C) is expected to get under way soon

D) will enable the U. S. to be oil independent

She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect resume and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy,” so she decided to offer the job to her second choice. “It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,” Tiffany confesses. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was that the candidate’s “different” behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding . He was an Asian-American raised in a household where respect for those in authority was shown by averting(避开) your eyes. “I was just thrown off by the lack of ye contact; not realizing it was cultural,” Tiffany says. “I missed out ,but will not miss that opportunity again.” Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. 大学英语四级改革阅读理解新题型——匹配题 练习1 Caring for elderly parents catches many unprepared [A ] Last July, Julie Baldocchi,s mother had a massive stroke and was paralyzed. Baldocchi suddenly had to become a family caregiver, something that she wasn"t prepared for. “I was flying by the seat of my pants,” says Baldocchi, an employment specialist in San Francisco. Both of her parents are 83, and she knew her father couldn’t handle her mother’s care. The hospital recommended putting her mother in a nursing home. Baldocchi wasn’t willing to do that. But moving her back into her parents’ home created other problems. Baldocchi, 48, is married and lives about a mile away from her parents. She has a full-time job and has back problems that make it difficult for her to lift her mother. “I couldn’t do it all,” she says. “But I didn’t even know how to find help.” [B] With help from the Family Caregiver Alliance, she eventually hired a live-in caregiver. “But even if you plan intellectually and legally, you’re never ready for the emotional impact,” Baldocchi says. In the first two months after her mother’s stroke, she lost about 30 pounds as stress mounted. More than 42 million Americans provide family caregiving for an adult who needs help with daily activities, according to a 2009 survey by the AARP. An additional 61.6 million provided at least some care during the year. And many are unprepared. [C] While many parents lack an advance care directive, it’s the most basic and important step they can take. The directive includes several parts, including: a durable power of attorney, which gives someone legal authority to make financial decisions on another’s behalf; a health care proxy, which is similar to the power of attorney, except it allows someone to make decisions regarding medical treatment; and a living will that outlines instructions for end-of-life care. (For example, parents can say if they want to be kept alive by artificial measures.) “It’s invaluable for the kids, because it’s hard to make those decisions for a parent,”says Jennifer Cona, an elder- law attorney at Genser Dubow Genser & Cona in Melville, N.Y. An advance care directive is the first line of defense if a situation arises, says Kathleen Kelly, executive director of the Family Caregiver Alliance, which supports and educates caregivers. Without an advance directive, the family will have to petition the court to be appointed the parent’s legal guardian, says https://www.360docs.net/doc/e29086845.html,. [D] It’s important for families to talk about long-term care so the adult children know their parents, preferences, wishes and goals, says Lynn Feinberg, a caregiving expert at AARP. But it’s not an easy conversation. Elderly parents are sometimes suspicious of their children’s financial motives, says Susan John, a financial planner at Financial Focus in Wolfeboro, N.H.
