I'm very happy to see such a large audience. But this lecture on the stock market is meant for beginners(初学者).
我很高兴能见到这么多的听众。

A stock is an ownership share(份额拥有) in a business(business是可数的时候表示公司). Companies sell stock as a way to raise money(筹资) without borrowing. People buy stock as an investment, in the hope of(希望) making a profit on an increase in the stock's price(股价上涨).
股票是指对某个公司的一种份额拥有。

公司出售股票是一种不需借款的筹资方式。

人们购买股票是一种投资行为，希望通过股价上涨而获利。

The stock market in the United States began in New York City in 1792. The New York Stock Exchange(纽约股票交易所)is the oldest financial market(金融市场)in the United States, and the largest stock market(股票市场) in the world.
美国的股票交易所于1792年诞生于纽约。

纽约股票交易所是美国最古老的金融市场，也是世界上最大的股票市场。

The stocks of more than three thousand American and international companies are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Together the stock(总股价)represents(相当于, 占) about eighty percent of the value o f all publicly owned companies(上市公司) in America.
3000多家美国公司和跨国公司的股票在纽约股票交易所交易，总股价约占全美上市公司总市值的80%。

Stockbrokers and dealers(股票经纪人和交易商)have been an important part of the traditional stock trading system. These financial experts are paid for(取得报酬) their knowledge of financial markets and business.

But, the Internet has made it easy for the general public to get information(使得...变得容易) about companies and stocks.Many people now choose to control how their money is invested.

About fifty years ago, only five percent of Americans owned stock. They were usually very rich people trading shares with each other(相互交易). Today, almost fifty percent of all Americans have stock holdings. And, sixteen percent of all stock trades take place(发生) over the Internet.

The expression used to(用来) describe such a period when the prices of most stocks are increasing is a “bull market.”“Bear market” is when most stock prices are falling as investors sell stocks(抛售股票).股市术语牛市用以表明大多数股票的价格处于上涨期，而熊市则表明投资者纷纷抛售股票致使大多数股票的价格进入下跌期。

Usually, investors in the United States have bought stocks they expected to(期望)keep for(持有) many years. Over the long-term(长期), the stock market has always increased. Short term price decreases only affect people who sell stocks at prices lower than they paid for them. That is why during bull markets, experts tell investors lo keep their stocks rather than(而不是) to sell.

Recently, however, short-term trading has become, more popular, especially one kind called day trading(日炒股交易). Day traders(日炒股者) seek to earn money from the daily changes in the price of a stock.

Day trading is an extremely risky form of investing. It is possible to gain a large amount of(大量钱) money very quickly by day trading. Most day traders, however, lose money.

The performance of the stock market is measured by(衡量) stock indexes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average follows the share prices of thirty leading(主要的)industrial companies(产业公司)in the United States. The NASDAQ Composite Index is also a major stock index.
股票市场的行情是以股票指数来衡量的。

道琼斯工业平均指数追踪到美国三十家主要产业公司的股价行情。

People usually have invested in companies that have strong earnings(盈利) and a large share in their business market(市场份额).

But over the last few years, stocks of companies that promise future growth(未来前景好的) have had the greatest demand.(需求量大)

In a few years, investors should be able to trade stocks twenty-four hours a day. Seven days a week. And, in the future, financial markets around the world are expected to be linked(全球联网). We just have to be a little bit more patient.
几年以后，投资者可能一周七天、一天24小时地全天候进行股票交易。

而且，未来全球金融市场都将联网交易。
