AI moved into a new house in July. Since then I have met a few of my neighbours who are very nice people. For Christmas, I thought I would do something nice for each of the neighbours I knew. There were nine neighbours whom I knew by name or spoke with often when I was out in my yard. I knew which houses they lived in.I decided to add one more to my list. This lady I decided toadd lives down the street from me. I meet her every morning walkingto work as I drive down the street. She always smiles to me. ButI had no idea who she was and which house she lived in.I planned to make small fruit baskets and leave them on my neighbours’ front porches (门廊) on Christmas Eve. I signed the cards:“Happy Hol idays from 5104 Northumberland Road.”I saved the last for the friendly lady. I finally decided on a house where I met her each morning and guessed that it was hers.My neighbours really appreciated the baskets and would tell me as they saw me in the yard or they would call, and a couple even came by to thank me.This morning I found a small note in the mailbox. It was addressed simply:Resident,5104 Northumberland Road. The thankyou card really caught me by surprise. I opened it and read the message, “Than k you for the lovely fruit basket you left on our porch. It was very thoughtful. Richard Kelly passed away last week. He talked a lot about how nice it was that someone remembered him in his time of illness. He really appreciated it.”I had no idea who Richard Kelly was and that he had been seriously ill. I had left that nice lady’s basket on his porch by mistake. I wanted to say sorry, but that would be wrong. I believe that Mr Kelly was meant to have that basket because he was dying. I hate that nice lady did not get to receive a fruit basket on Christmas, but I believe if she knew what had happened, she would be happy. I feel pleased to have helped Richard Kelly’s last days be more cheerful.

Module 4 Sandstorms in Asia Section Ⅰ Introduction &Reading Pre-readingIn April 2012, a dust storm that originated in China and Mongolia took a sixday journey across more than ten thousand kilometers of sea and open land to Arizona in the United States. The cloud was so dense that it seemed as if the sun were setting early. At least one person thought a volcano had erupted.Although traveling dust storms are nothing new, the dust now often contains chemical or metallic substances that contribute to respiratory illnesses (呼吸道疾病) and damage the environment. At present, a group of researchers in Asia is studying aerosol particles and their effects on the environment — and they have plenty of dust to work with.Dust storms are one of the repercussions (后果) of humans messing around with Mother Nature. Although they are a natural phenomenon, dust storms have been occurring more often, at shorter intervals, and with greater force in recent years, and human activity is the cause. It is a fact that excessive herding of animals and exploitation of grasslands are responsible for the majority of dust storms. This means that dust storms are largely a result of human actions; in other words, they are controllable.Section_ⅠIntroduction & Reading —Prereading[原文呈现]Sandstorms① in AsiaSandstorms have been a major②disaster for many Asian countries for centuries. ASamuel Osmond is a 19yearold law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲) by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable. They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me — I hear the notes and can bear them in mind — each and every note,” says Samuel.Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Sam uel says confidently, “It’s all about super memory —I guess I have that gift.”However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.

AAs most people know, in the past few years, sandstorms have swept across many cities and areas of North China, polluting the air and disturbing daily lives of human beings. People look dirty and suffer many kinds of illnesses, such as breath difficulty. The sandstorm is such a serious problem that it has not only undermined the industrial and agricultural development of our country but also caused a lot of trouble to the living conditions of the Chinese people. It is expected that effective (有效的) measures should be taken as soon as possible through our joint efforts to limit its occurrence. So what should we do with the frightening sandstorms? Some experts put forward practical suggestions as follows: For one thing, more funds (基金) ought to be put into tree planting and forest protection so as to keep more water resources within the surface of the earth. For another, governments of all countries should make laws on environmental protection. For example, banning the use of throwaway chopsticks and punishing i llegal tree cutting. Scientists should also study and find ways to cut down the degree of its destruction and to improve the whole environment. How people look forward to sunny days with little breeze (轻风) touching their faces now and forever! Nevertheless, I am fully confident that the golden days can come back so long as everyone tries his best to protect natural environment from today on.

Carnival, the most important and popular festival in Brazil, mixes emotions, creativity, colours, sounds and many costumes. The moment comes when all participants are the protagonists (主角) of their own play, costume, plot, and samba. Carnival, as spelled in Portuguese, is a 4day celebration. It starts on Saturday, and ends on Fat Tuesday.Dates change every year. Little need be said about Carnival in Rio; the Samba School Parade is worldfamous and everyone has seen pictures in magazines and on television. Every year, Rio hosts the world's largest festival — Carnival. Many preCarnival festivities begin earlier, while the closing event — the Parade of the Champions — is on Saturday. The official opening is when the Mayor hands over the keys of the City to Carnival King Momo and his Queen. This is the kickoff for festivities that dance through the streets all over town, highlighted by parades, contests and balls. Downtown, the Sambadrome opens its gates to the Samba School Parades, beginning with Group B Samba Schools on Friday. Saturday is set aside for Group A — the second highest ranking, with the champion and runnerup promotedto the Major League next year. Sunday and Monday are the Major Samba School Parades in the Special 2 Group, while Tuesday sees the Junior Samba Schools. Balls takeplace every night throughout the week, together with a variety ofcostume contests. During this period, hotels in Rio work only with package bookings and prepayment. One of the most frequent questions we hear is “what is the date of Carnival this year?” Well, believe it or not,it is not an easy question to answer. You have to be part astrologer (占星家), part mathematician, and part priest!

The Magic of the Mask Think of①carnival②, and you think of crowds, costumes③, and confusion④. The sounds and sights change from one country to⑤ another but the excitement is the same everywhere. “Carnival” comes from two Latin words, meaning “no more meat”⑥. In Europe, where it began⑦, carnival was followed by⑧ forty days without meat, as people prepared for the Christian⑨ festival of Easter⑩.

4 The government realised that wearing masks had become a problem○24. Their use was limited by○25 laws, the first of which dates back to○26 the fourteenth century○27.
