Passage One

At 26, Jane Goodall had no college education or science training. But since childhood, she had been dreaming of working closely with animals in Africa. "All through my childhood people said you can't go to Africa. You're a girl," Goodall says. But my mother used to say, if you really want to, there's nothing you can't do."

In 1957, the 26-year-old Goodall journeyed to Kenya to work as a secretary. She also arranged to meet the famous scientist Louis Leakey, who was so impressed by her enthusiasm that he hired her as his assistant. She went with him on many trips to the African jungle and in 1960 Leakey sent Goodall to live among chimpanzees in a remote animal preserve, recording the animals' behavior and interactions.

For three months Goodall made little progress. But she says, "I never came close to giving up." Her breakthrough came one day when she saw a male chimpanzee stick a blade of grass into a termite(白蚁) hill, then put the grass in his mouth. Afterward she approached the hill and did the same. Pulling the grass out, she discovered dozens of termites clinging to it. The discovery--that some animals use tools--was unknown to most scientists at the time.

Goodall saw chimpanzees exhibit human-like emotions, such as jealousy and love. But she also discovered they were capable of violent attacks against each other.

Goodall received her Ph.D. in the study of animal behavior at England's Cambridge University. Now she travels around the globe raising money to preserve

wildlife. "I love being in the forest with the chimps," she says. "I'd much rather be there than traveling around from city to city."

41. What did Goodall's mother think of her dream?

A. As a girl she should not go to the African jungle.

B. Her dream would remain a dream unless she got the right training.

C. As a girl she should stay away from violent animals.

D. She could make her dream come true if she was determined.

42. Goodall's most important discovery is that _______.

A. some animals use tools.

B. like humans animals have emotions .

C. chimpanzees could attack each other violently.

D. termites are chimpanzees's favorite food.

43. What is Goodall doing now?

A. Studying animal behavior at Cambridge University.

B. Raising funds for the preservation of wildlife.

C. Observing chimpanzees in African jungles.

D. Working hard for a PhD degree.

Passage Two

Although I had left school against the advice of my teachers, I had, without telling anyone, tried to continue my studies in literature at evening classes. It was a tiresome walk from one end of the city to another and to sit among adults was uninteresting. I was the youngest in the class, so the friendship I knew at school was absent. I put up with it for a short period. It was too long a walk on cold winter’s nights and it was hard to put my heart into Shakespeare with wet shoes and trousers. So I continued reading books and started writing poetry at home.

By chance, I won some prizes and awards for literature. A young woman from a TV company came to the college one day. She told me that I had won a national poetry award. I stared at her in astonishment and disbelief. She wanted to make a short film about me, to which I said:” No, I couldn’t do that.” Not that I had any real excuse. I was just frightened. In the end she persuaded me that I should do it the following day.

So I did. They made a short film of me reading one of my poems and I became more interested in literature than ever. I wondered what I should do after this, and

decided some weeks later that I could not imagine myself spending the rest of my days dealing with machines. So one evening, I hesitatingly told my parents that I wanted to return to school. They were greatly surprised and, I think, a little afraid but they did not try to persuade me not to. They wanted to know if I was sure, if I knew what it meant and whether I realized that if I gave up my job training, it would be very difficult to get a good job. But nothing could help me, and they asked about the matter no further.

44. Which of the following has most probably been discussed in the passage?

A. The writer’s unhappy childhood.

B. The poor teaching quality of the writer’s school.

C. The writer’s leaving school against his teacher’s advice.

D. Whether it was worth leaving school for job training.

45. After he won some prizes and awards for literature, a young woman from a TV

company __________.

A. wanted to make his success known to the public

B. came to make friends with him

C. invited him to make a speech

D. came to tell him that he had become a very important person

46. Which of the following is NOT True?

A. His parents worried that he would have no future if he returned to school.

B. His parents worried that he would leave school again

C. It was difficult for one who studied literature to get a job

D. His parents did not want him to continue his education

Passage Three

I began to smoke when I was in high school. In fact, I remember the evening I was at a girlfriend’s house, and we were watching a movie—a terribly romantic movie. He (the hero of the movie) was in love, she (his lady) was beautiful, and they were both smoking. My friend had only two cigarettes from a pack in her mother’s purse, and she gave one to me. It was my first time.

My parents didn’t care much. They both smoked, and my older brother did too. My mother told me that smokers don’t grow tall, but I was already5’6”(taller than most of the boys in my class), so I was happy to hear that “fact”. In school, the teachers talked against smoking, but the cigarette advertisements were so exciting.

The men in the ads were so good-looking and so successful, and the women were-well, they were beautiful and sophisticated.

I read a book called how to stop smoking. The writer said that smoking wastes time, and that cigarettes cost a lot of money. “So what?” I thought, the book didn’t say that smoking can take away years of your life. But ten years later, everyone began to hear about the negative effects of cigarette smoke: lung disease, cancer, and heart problems. After that, there was a health warning on every pack of cigarettes. I didn’t pay much attention to the reports and warnings. I felt healthy, and I thought I was taking good care of myself.

Then two events changed my mind. First, I started to cough. I thought it was just a cold, but it didn’t get better. Second, my brother got lung cancer. He got sicker and sicker. My brother and I used to smoke cigarettes together over twenty years age, and we smoked our last cigarettes together the day before he died. I sat with him in his hospital room, and I decided to quit. “NO more cigarettes, ever,” I said to myself.

However, it was very hard to stop, Nicotine is a drug; as a result, cigarettes cause a powerful addiction. I tried several times to quit on my own—without success. I made excuses. I told myself: Smoking helps me keep my figure—i.e. I don’t gain weight when I smoke. Smoking not only relaxes me but it also helps me think clearly. I’m a free, liberated woman. I can smoke when I want to.

Finally, I ran out of excuses—I might say my excuses went up in smoke. I joined the “Stop Smoking” program at the local hospital, which also ended up in failure.

47. How the writer started smoking shows the powerful influence of .

A. educational institutions

B. one’s social status

C. the mass media

D. public opinions

48. The “fact” in Paragraph 2 refers to

A. her admiration for the men in the ads

B. her mother’s warning that smokers don’t grow tall

C. her height of 5’6”

D. the teachers’ negative attitude towards smoking

49. The writer decided to quit smoking partly because .

A. she could not afford any more cigarettes.

B. her doctor had advised her to do so

C. her brother had given up smoking.

D. she had started to cough

50. The writer found it hard to quit smoking because .

A. she had been addicted to nicotine.

B. she had been putting on weight.

C. she could not think clearly.

D. she was an independent woman.

The sea breezes wake you up and make you eat well and sleep well. The city was planned with straight roads, and these roads cross each other at right angles, making squares as they do in many American cities. Very often you can find yourself on top of a hill in the city, looking down one of these straight roads as it rises and falls on its journey through the town. A good way to travel these roads is by cable car. These are buses that run on rails in the ground up and down the steep hills.

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In 1985 when a Japan Air Lines (JAL) jet crashed, its president, Yasumoto Takagi, called each victim’s family to apologize, and then promptly resigned. And in 1987, when a subsidiary of Toshiba sole sensitive military technology to the former Soviet Union, the chairman of Toshiba gave up his post. These executive actions, which Toshiba calls “the highest form of apology,”may seem bizarre to US managers. No one at Boeing resigned after the JAL crash, which may have been caused by a faulty Boeing repair. The difference between the two business cultures centers around different definitions of delegation. While US executives give both responsibility and authority to their employees, Japanese executives delegate only authority—the responsibility is still theirs. Although the subsidiary that sold the sensitive technology to the Soviets had its own management, the Toshiba top executives said they “must take personal responsibility for not creating an atmosphere throughout the Toshiba group that would make such activity unthinkable, even in an independently run subsidiary.” Such acceptance of community responsibility is not unique to businesses in Japan. School principals in Japan have resigned when their students committed major crimes after school hours. Even if they do not quit, Japanese executives will often accept primary responsibility in other ways, such as taking the first pay cut when a company gets into financial trouble. Such personal sacrifices, even if they are largely symbolic, help to create the sense of community and employee loyalty that is crucial to the Japanese way of doing business. Harvard Business School professor George Lodge calls the ritual acceptance of blame “almost a feudal (封建的) way of purging (清除) the community of dishonor,”and to some in the United States, such resignations look cowardly. However, in an era in which both business and governmental leaders seem particularly good at evading responsibility, many US managers would probably welcome an infusion (灌输) of the Japanese sense of responsibility, If, for instance,

First the parking valet handed him the keys to his Jaguar instead of fetching the car. Then an elderly white couple came out and handed him the keys to their black Mercedes-Benz. “It took them a while to realize that I was not a valet,” says Johnson. “It didn ’t matter that I was dressed for dinner and had paid a handsome price for the meal, just as he had. What mattered was that I didn ’t fit his idea of someone who could be equal to him.” Such incidents, which are depressingly familiar to African-Americans of all ages, incomes and social classes, help explain why black and white attitudes often differ so completely. A recent survey found that 68 percent of blacks believe racism is still a major problem in America. Only 38 percent of whites agreed. Many Americans find the gulf between blacks and whites bewildering. After all, official segregation(隔离) is a bad memory and 40 years of law, policies and court decisions have helped
