《义务教育英语课程标准》指出：语言既是交流的工具，也是思维的工具。学习一门外语能够促进人的心智发展，有助于学生认识世界的多样性。同时强调各种语言知识的呈现和学习都应从语言使用的角度出发，为提升“用英语做事情”的能力服务。《中国学生发展核心素养》总体框架于20**年9月正式发布，发展学生“核心素养”成为专家学者们研究的重点。让学生学会学习、健康生活才是培养“全面发展的人”中自主发展方面的基本要点。
本课以单元主题学习为主要研究方向。主题教学（thematic instruction）的概念内涵，美国学者哈纳（L.A.Hanna）于1955年首次进行了比较系统的界定，他认为主题教学“是聚集于对某一具有社会意义的课题的理解而展开的有目的的学习体验，其中这种课题被视为是一个横断各学科且基于儿童个体社会需求的意义整体。”
本学期很多单元的话题都是旅行，教师对教材进行整合并在此基础上设计了一系列以旅行为主题的课程。例如主题绘本阅读，带着孩子们一起阅读了绘本：Oh, the places
