Ladies and Gentlemen,Good morning/afternoon. It is my great honor to stand before you today to discuss a topic that is of paramount importance to the well-being of our society: the cultivation of virtue. Virtue, in its simplest form, refers to moral excellence and ethical behavior. It is the backbone of a harmonious society, and it is our collective responsibility to nurture and uphold these virtues. In a world that is rapidly changing, it is easy to become lost in the pursuit of material wealth and personal gain. However, without a strong foundation of virtue, our achievements are hollow and our relationships are strained. Therefore, it is crucial that we take the time tocultivate virtue in ourselves and in our communities.Firstly, the cultivation of virtue begins with self-awareness. We must recognize our own strengths and weaknesses, and we must be willing to confront our flaws. Self-improvement is a lifelong journey, and it requires a deep sense of introspection. By understanding ourselves, we can make conscious choices to embody virtues such as honesty, integrity, and compassion.Honesty is the cornerstone of trust. In a world where misinformation and deceit are pervasive, it is more important than ever to be truthful in our words and actions. Honesty fosters strong relationships, both personally and professionally, and it creates a foundation of trust that is essential for a healthy society.Integrity is the quality that ensures consistency between what we say and what we do. A person of integrity is reliable and principled, and they stand firm in their beliefs even when faced with adversity. By living with integrity, we demonstrate respect for ourselves and for others, and we inspire those around us to do the same.Compassion is the virtue that drives us to care for others, especially those who are less fortunate. It is the virtue that unites us and helps us to build a more inclusive and empathetic society. Compassion can be shown through acts of kindness, support, and understanding. It is avirtue that requires us to step outside of our own comfort zones and to consider the well-being of others. In addition to personal cultivation, it is essential that we fostervirtue within our communities. Education plays a critical role in this process. Schools should emphasize the importance of moral values and provide students with opportunities to develop these virtues through character-building activities and community service projects.Parents and guardians also have a significant responsibility in shaping the moral fabric of society. By leading by example, they can instill virtues such as respect, responsibility, and empathy in their children. Family values and traditions that promote integrity and compassionshould be passed down through generations, ensuring that these virtues remain at the heart of our culture.Furthermore, the media and public figures have a powerful influence on society. By setting a positive example and promoting virtuous behavior, they can inspire millions to emulate these qualities. It is importantthat we hold these individuals accountable for their actions and encourage them to embody the virtues that we hold dear.In conclusion, the cultivation of virtue is a fundamental necessity for the establishment of a harmonious society. It requires self-awareness, personal commitment, and collective effort. By nurturing honesty, integrity, and compassion in ourselves and in our communities, we can create a world that is built on strong moral foundations.Ladies and gentlemen, let us all take this opportunity to reflect on our own lives and commit to the cultivation of virtue. Together, we canbuild a society that is not only prosperous but also just, compassionate, and united.Thank you.。

Where principles come fristThe Hyde school operates on the principle that if you teach students the mefit of such values as truth, courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern, then academic achievement naturally follows. Hyde school founder Joseph Gauld claims success with the program at the $18,000-a-year high school in Bath, Maine, which has received considerable publicity for its work with troubled youngsters.

“We don’t see ourselves as a school for a type of kid,” say Malcolm Gauld, Joseph’ son, who graduated from Hyde and is now headmaster.” We see ourselves as preparing kids for a way of life----by cultivating a comprehensive set of principles that can affect all kids.”“我们并不把自己看作一所专为某一类孩子而开设的学校,”马尔科姆?

”Now, Joe Gauld is trying to spread his controversial Character First idea to public, inner-city schools willing to use the tax dollars spent on the traditional program for the new approach, The first Hyde public school program opened in September 1992. Within months the program was suspended. Teachers protested the program’s demands and the strain associated with more intense work.

This fall, the Hyde Foundation is scheduled to began a preliminary public school program in Baltimore. Teachers will be trained to later work throughout the entire Baltimore system. Other US school managers are eyeing the program, too. Last fall, the Hyde Foundation opened a magnet program within a public high school in the suburbs of New Haven, Connecticut, over parents’protests. The community feared the school would attract inner-city minority and troubled students.

As in Maine, the quest for truth is also widespread at school in Connecticut. In one English class, the 11students spend the last five minutes in an energetic exchange evaluating their class performance for the day on a 1-10 scale.“I get a 10.”“I challenge that. You did not do either your grammar or your spelling homework.” “Ok, seven.”“Y ou ought to get a six.”“Wait, I put my best effort forth here.”“Yeah, but you didn’t ask questions today.”

”Explaining his approach to education, Joe Gauld says the conventional education system cannot be reformed. He notes"no amount of change" with the horse and carriage "willproduce an automobile".The Hyde School assumes "every human being has a unique potential ",that is based on character, not intelligence or wealth. Conscience and hard work are valued.Success in measured by growth, not academic achievement. Students are required to take responsibility for each other. To avoid the controversy of other character programs used in US schools. Gauld says the concept of doing your best has nothing to do with forcing the students to accept a particular set of morals or religious values.

The Hyde curriculum is similar to conventional schools that provide preparation for college, complete with English, history ,math and science. But all students are required to take performing arts and sports, and provide a community service. For each course, students get a grade for academic achievement and for "best effort",. At Bath, 97%of the graduates attend four years colleges.

Commitment among parents is a key ingredient in the Hyde mixture. For the student to gain admission, parents also must agree to accept and demonstrate the school's philosophies and outlook. The parents agree in writing to meet monthly in one of 20 regional groups,go to a yearly three-day regional retreat, and spend at least three times a year in workshops, discussion groups and seminars at Bath. Parents of Maine students have an attendance rate of 95% in the many sessions. Joe and Malcolm Gauld both say children tend to do their utmost when they see their parents making similar efforts. The biggest obstacle for many parents, they say, is to realize their own weaknesses.
