Many bats live a longer time than other animals of their size.European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries to fight the aging process(过程) in human beings.Last week, the group of scientists said they had found important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体), a line of genes found in the nucleus(核) of cells. The scientists were most interested in parts connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端粒). Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes, which shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down.A report on bats was published this month in the journal Science Advances.Among the leaders of the study was Emma Teeling, a biologist with University College Dublin in Ireland. Teeling said studying long-living mammals that have developed ways to fight aging is another way to prove the molecular(分子) basis of extended health length. She added that studying bats made scientists able to learn more about the processes that drive healthy aging. The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years. The scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis, had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for the oldest age, reaching 41 years. The scientists' findings suggest that these bats' cells have the ability to keep and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process. Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that eighteen of these are bats. The only exception is an unusual African rodent, the naked mole rat.11.Which sentence can be put at the end of Paragraph 3? ( )A.This makes scientists able to study bats.B.That's why bats can fly a great distance.C.They say this is what causes aging.D.They discover the cells connected to humans.12.Why do some species of bats live a very long time? ( )A.Because they have a line of long-living genes out of the cells.B.Because their cells have the ability to keep and repair their telomeres.C.Because they have another ability to live longer without any food or water.D.Because telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes to stop cells dividing.13.The underlined word “that” refers to . ( )A.four yearsB.body sizeC.the aging processD.the ability to repair14.What's the best title of the passage? ( )A.Differences Between Long-Living AnimalsB.A Science Report on ChromosomesC.Do Bats Hold the Secret to Long Life?D.Are Humans and Bats Similar in Protecting Themselves?Ⅲ.[2019·凉山州]还原短文People travelled to see the buildings, the food, the national dresses in foreign countries because they thought they would not be the same as those of their own countries in the past. 15. They all have their Hilton or Sheraton Hotels everywhere. They all have their McDonald's, theirKFCs and their Pizza Huts. Office buildings look the same everywhere, and most city centers are full of office buildings. And of course, people are driving the same brands of Japanese or European cars. Then why is the foreign travel more popular nowadays? What do tourists hope to experience in a foreign country that they cannot experience at home? The answer could be that people could be very interested in the past. 16. Most people travel overseas to find out what foreign countries' history and culture used to be like, not what they are like today. Tourists visit different kinds of museums in foreign countries so that they can learn their history and culture.Every country also has its own beautiful places for tourists to visit. 17.18. It is not just its old buildings, its works of art or beautiful places, but also the people who live in it. This is why a country such as Thailand attracts millions of people. You know that by 10 a.m. you will be struggling to stay awake in class.“No one should have to get up this early for school,” you say to yourself. Some adults agree. Studies show that teens need about nine hours of sleep every night. Some adults would like to see middle schools and high schools open later in the morning so teens can get the more sleep they need.Other people disagree on the change in school starting times. They think changing the starting times would influence other parts of students' lives. They say a time change would do more harm than good. What do you think? Should school start later in the morning than it does now?Yes! School Should Start LaterSchool should begin later in the day. It would be best for students and their families. Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes. 1. Here, we look at two examples.
A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. 2. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
3. Think about violinists in an orchestra(管弦乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. 4. Why does this work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the damaged parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.
Music improves concentration, memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities.
5. Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp(敏锐的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable, but it's also good for us in many other ways.
A.Music helps people solve some hearing problems.
B.In his study two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room.
C.It can even help sick people get better.
