As is known to all, old people, usually suffering from the pain of diseases or the potential health hazards, can receive professional care in nursing houses, where first-class medical facilities are equipped and experienced staff are always available. We are used to hearing the UK’s society and economy described as being ‘industrial’ or even ‘post-industrial’, but we mustn’t let this blind us to the fact that agriculture are its supporting industries still account for around 20% of our Gross National Product. This figure is especially impressive, I think, when you bear in mind how very small a percentage of the UK workforce is employed in agriculture. This is not a recent development – you would have to go back to 1750 or so to find a majority of the workforce in this Country working in agriculture. By the middle of the next century, in 1850 that is, it had fallen sharply to 10%, and then to 3% by the middle of the twentieth century. And now just 2% of the workforce contribute 20% of GNP. How is this efficiency achieved? Well, my own view is that it owes a great deal to a history, over the last 50 or 60 years, of intelligent support by the state, mainly taking the form of helping farmers to plan ahead. Then the two other factors I should mention, both very important, are the high level of training amongst the agricultural workforce. And secondly, the recognition by farmers of the value of investing in technology. Now, although the UK is a fairly small country, the geology and climate vary a good deal from region to region. For our purposes today we can divide the country broadly into three –I’ve marked them on the map here (indicates map). The region you’ll get to know best, of course, is the north, where we are at present. The land here is generally hilly, and the soils thin. The climate up here, and you’ve already had evidence of this, is generally cool and wet. As you will see next week, the typical farm here in the North is a small, family-run concern, producing mainly wool and timber for the market. If we contrast that with the Eastern region, over here, the east is flatter and more low-lying, with fertile soils and a mixed climate. Average farm-size is much bigger in the east, and farms are likely to be managed strictly on commercial lines. As for crops, well, the east is the UK’s great cereal-producing region. However, increasingly significant areas are now also given over to high quality vegetables for supply direct to the supermarkets. The third broad region is the west, where it’s a different story again. The climate is warmer than in the north and much wetter than in the east. The resulting rich soils in the west provide excellent pasture, and the farms there are quite large, typically around 800 hectares. The main products are milk, cheese and meat. So, clearly, there are marked differences between regions. But this does not prevent quite a strong sense of solidarity amongst the farming community as a whole, right across the country. This solidarity comes in part from the need to present a united front in dealing with other powerful interest-groups, such as government or the media. It also owes something to the close co-operation between all the agricultural training colleges, through which the great majority of farmers pass at the beginning of their careers. And a third factor making for solidarity is the national structure of the Farmers’ Union, of which virtually all farmers are members. Finally in this short talk, I would like to say a little about the challenges facing farmers in the next …场景机经图书馆I got the grade of (A plus) in my previous studies.Dina didn‟t attend the lecture because (It was cancelled )Dina advised against? a book by JespersonOnce entering the library, you need to register your name and (departmental/parental address)Students may make use of recall system and(a pink slip)(注:这里pink slip 指代书板)if you want to hand books or make inquiries, you may go to the (information desk)Students will be fined 违反规定需要罚款(25 pence)if they violate the rules.用图书馆的目的make (summaries)(另有答案填:essay plans / advice to essay)写essay 要列出(documents)documental …..exchange draft and (get/give feedbacks)(王陆提醒大家注意复数形式)录制录像21. PART II 论证法与主题分类结合真题详解7分范文(2011.1.22A&G)There are an increasing number of anti-social behaviors in recent years; People generally believe that the society is to blame. What do you think the cause s are and who is responsible for this.(反社会,犯罪)The rise of anti-social behavior has aroused wide concern throughout the world. And views divide over who should be responsible for this phenomenon.Among many factors, perhaps the most important one is that people have not got proper education about obeying social order. Usually, students in schools are taught theoretical knowledge and they are encouraged to study hard so in future they can find a decent job. Our education has neglected the teaching of respect to others and the society. The lack of education will have serious influence on people’s social behavior. On the other hand, the widening income gap can also be regarded as one of the main causes leading to the rise of anti-social behaviors. The economic gap has made some people become socially underprivileged and even cannot survive. Unfortunately, the government often forgets the existence of these people and does not provide any help. As a result, some people decide to do some illegal things for a better life.As for who should be responsible for this phenomenon, views vary among different people. At first, government should take the responsibility to deal with the problem. That is because the government should give citizens a peaceful and secure living environment. For another, the society also plays a part because social environment is usually the key role influencing people’s values and behaviors. In the meantime, schools cannot escape the responsibility. After all, the rise of this phenomenon is largely associated with lack of proper education. Of course, citizens themselves should also improve their own quality and law awareness.明确一个理念,社会犯罪的增加,固然有社会的原因,但是从主观角度来说,犯罪主体也是有很大的责任的。

(2011.2.17A/G) some people believe that people who work for arts such as painting, music should be supported financially by government. Some people think that those should find others’ support instead. Discuss both views and give your opinion.(艺术,政府投资)Undoubtedly, the development of culture and arts should be supported by government. But whether artists should be supported financially by governments remains controversial due to the uniqueness of this issue. Some people take it for granted that artists funded by the government can devote themselves to art work without worrying about any other things. But fact shows that once their income is determined by governments, their views, lifestyles and even contents of works will be more or less influenced by the authorities. Thus artists find it hard to maintain their independent work styles and critical thinking. On the other hand, the works and results of arts are in most cases abstract and it is hard to estimate their value. Thus it is demanding for the government to judge how much should be invested in such field. From this aspect/in this sense, corruption and extravagance will arise due to the lack of objective mechanism and transparency. It will be unfair for taxpayers.artists should be immune from any funds from the government. The point is, artists can find some other sources of investment such as the market or some non-government organizations. They can exercise their creativity and talents to create real excellent works to satisfy the needs of the market and thus receive greater rewards from their customers. This practice is beneficial both for artists and for art itself. In conclusion, the funds from the government seem to be a barrier for artists’independent creation and full display of their talents. Compared with government’s funding, free competition and creation to get market recognition turn out to be a better way for balancing economy and art.(2011.2.19A)Some people think that women should play an equal role as men in military force or police force, others say women are not suited for such kind of work. Discuss both side and give your own opinion.(社会类男女平等弱势群体)Body 1: In the past, military force or police force only accepted males due to their advantages in physical fighting. However, today’s situation has changed a lot. The focus has shifted from the strength to intelligence. That’s because in the army almost all weapons have been computerized. It is well known that females are never inferior to males in terms of intelligence. Hence, physical strength should not be a barrier for women’s involvement in the army.Body 2: On the other hand, women are equipped with some special merits such as patience and thoughtfulness. These merits enable females to have outstanding performance in certain areas such as cleric work, logistics and medicine. Undoubtedly, these positions are of equal importance to fighting on the frontline. Actually, in most countries, women are widely recruited to fulfill such tasks in the army and they do have finished their work satisfactorily.Body 3: however, there is also social prejudice against women’s enrolment in the army. It is traditionally believed that army is the place women should keep away from. So the whole society should be tolerant for women’s joining in the army. And there is a common phenomenon of sexual harassment in the army. Women themselves should know how to overcome these troubles and exercise their talents.(2011.2.12 A&G)Tourism is an excellent way to develop country, but it also can cause some harm. How can a country ensure tourism benefit the development?(旅游)Body 1: the positive and negative effects of tourism.转折,否定,比较,让步,因果,假设,例证,反证,设问Positive effects: (1) boost local economic development –attract more funds and investments (2) promote communication between different culturesNegative effects: (1) the loss of local conventions and traditions –commercialized (2) the damage to local environment and resources (3) local economy will depend too much on tourism, without creativity and originality.Body 2: what measures should be taken to guarantee the benefits of tourism.Strengthen the preservation of local culture and promote local people’s awareness. (2) pay more attention to the protection of local environment, sustainable development.(2011.3.05A/G)Some people say that governments should spend money on measures to save languages that are used by few speakers, while others believe it's a waste of financial resources. Discuss both views and give your opinion.(保护语言,文化类)反证例证破立(2011.3.12A)Competitiveness is a positive quality for people to have among most societies. How does thisBody 1: As for how the competitiveness affects individuals, three factors, I think, plays a part in the process. At first, peer pressure serves as the most important element in encouraging individuals to feel the difference and make some improvements. For example, in today’s schools, some less successful students may feel intense pressure from others especially those top students. Hence, most of them may work harder and get higher scores to remove the gap.Body 2: And social environment also plays a part. The present society is characterized by high efficiency and quick tempo, which forces people to keep pace with the time. Those who lag behind will perish and be squeezed out of the mainstream. What’s more, personality is also a decisive factor in the awareness of competitiveness. Even the social environment focuses on competition and peer pressure exerts great influence on individuals, there are also some people who are indifferent to the outside stimulus. They are born with indifference to the hustle and bustle of a noisy society and keep a peaceful mindset of themselves.Body 3: There is no clear-cut border between right and wrong as for judging the effects of competitiveness. What really matters is whether people can handle it in an appropriate way. More often than not, competitiveness should be within the range of not damaging others’benefits and not offending others’feelings. Most importantly, it should not violate social morality and widely-accepted social conventions.(2011.3.19A/G)With computer technology becoming cheaper and more accessible, more adults work from home and more children study from home. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?(现代科技)Body 1: more flexibility, lower commuting cost, free schedule, lower tuition fees, more information,Body 2: lack of team spirit, unable to supervise, lack of interaction among people,(2011.4.2)Cheap air travel allows more people to move around the world. Someone think it will cause more pollution, so we should increase ticket price. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (环境,飞机旅游)Currently, air travel ticket price has been substantially reduced to attract more passengers. This seems to be a popular decision for travelers, but it is questioned by some people who hold this will bring about some serious consequences. In the past, air travel served as a “noble” means of transportation, which was enjoyed by the comparatively wealthy people. Undoubtedly, this was largely associated with the expensive ticket for air travel. Thus, the sharp decrease of ticket price was definitely a blessing (a good news) for most people who once could not afford to travel by air. In this sense, this will attract more passengers or travelers. For those often travelling abroad, this will sharply decrease their expenditure.Furthermore, the soaring travelers will surely lead to the booming of international tourism. In reality, for those international travelers, air travel is the most preferable modes of transport. In the past, the high price was also a heavy burden for them, which often drenched their enthusiasm of travelling around. The reduction of cost helps tourism prosper to a large extent. In the meantime, the booming of tourism also enhances intercultural communication among different societies. However, there arises some concern about the air pollution and energy consumption caused by this practice. Someone hold that cheaper price may mean more passengers and thus more pollution. To a certain degree, this is inevitable, but will not be so serious to become a huge irrevocable disaster. Fortunately, today’s flight engine is more effective and efficient, which will emit less gas than before.9分考官范文参考:There is no doubt that traffic and pollution from vehicles have become huge problems, both in cities and on motorways everywhere. Solving these problems is likely to need more than a simple rise in the price of petrol.higher fuel costs are unlikely to limit the number of drivers for long. As this policy would also affect the cost of public transport, it would be very unpopular with everyone who needs to travel on the roads. But there are various other measures that could be implemented that would have a huge effect on these problems.I think to tackle the problem of pollution, cleaner fuels need to be developed. The technology is already available to produce electric cars that would be both quieter and cleaner to use. Persuading manufacturers and travelers to adopt this new technology would be a more effective strategy for improving air quality, especially in cities. However, traffic congestion will not be solved by changing the type of private vehicle people can use. To do this we need to improve the choice of public transport services available to travelers. For example, if sufficient sky trains and underground train systems were built and effectively maintained in our major cities, then traffic on the roads would be dramatically reduced. Long-distance train and coach services should be made attractive and affordable alternatives to driving your own car for long journeys. In conclusion, I think that long-term traffic and pollution reductions would depend on educating the public to use public transport more, and on governments using public money to construct and run efficient transport systems.(2011.4.16)Many people believe it is important to protect environment, but they make no effort to do it themselves, why don't they and do you have any suggestion for individuals to protect environment?(环境)The environment pollution has become so serious that it seems individual efforts are unable to reverse the trend of deterioration. According to some psychological theories, to guarantee the realization of some tasks, the setting of the target should be within the ability of people or should be achievable. If the challenge is obviously beyond people’s reach, they will reduce the efforts or even do nothing. On the other hand, people’s failure to get involved in the cause of environment preservation goes beyond considering its feasibility. Actually, the absence of government’s leading and organizing also plays a part. In China, the focus of our government is to develop national economy while environment has fallen to be the victim of the soaring GDP. The government’s negligence of environment gives a hint to citizens that to earn more money outweighs any efforts in earning a clean sky.To protect environment should never be regarded as a task that has nothing to do with ourselves. The cause of protection should be implemented by promoting common awareness of the importance of environment. This can be done through school education. People from a young age should be taught the significance of our living environment. Additionally, those who take up the cause should be rewarded both in spiritual or material forms. The heroes and pioneers can set a good example for the common people to follow.(it is therefore imperative that, as a start, every effort be made to cut down on the use….)In conclusion, individuals’failure to protect environment mainly stems from their disappointment for the gloomy prospect. Also government’s absence in motivating and organizing plays a part. Nevertheless, to protect planet Earth should capture more attention and entails every individual’s involvement.(2011.4.30)Some people think the foreign visitors should be charged more than the local visitors when they visit the cultural and historical attractions in another country. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (旅游)The development of tourism renders many cultural and historical spots attract an increasing number of foreign tourists. Yet they should not be charged higher price so as to increase the income, which may have seriousIt is claimed that tourism is a profitable industry, so to charge higher price for foreign visitors will definitely increase local incomes and government revenues. Actually this is a short-sighted behavior. More ticket cost is just a direct and visible benefit, but the cost of consumption in local market such as hotel and restaurant is of larger amount.Higher price is a barrier for the spread of local culture. Higher ticket price will scare foreigners away, which is a huge loss for local tourism. By contrast, many countries have decided to cancel the ticket for some cultural and historical attractions. This practice proves to be successful, because it has attracted much more tourists from all nations. On the other hand, to charge more price can be regarded as a discrimination for foreign visitors. Historical and cultural attractions are a sort of property which belongs to the public. That means every individual regardless of their nationality and gender should have equal access. It is unfair to charge more fees just because they are alien. In conclusion, it is unreasonable for some cultural and historical attractions to charge more fees for foreign visitors. It is harmful for the development of local tourism and not sustainable for the spread of culture. These attractions should provide equal access to both locals and foreigners.(2011.5.7)Environmental problems are too big for individual countries and individuals to address. We have reached the stage where the only way to protect the environment is to address it at an international level. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? (环境)Serious, cost,Global issue, if some countries contribute to the campaign but others continue to emit greenhouse gases, the positive effects will be offset or reduced.Benefits. Share the burden, enhance the efficiency. Effects are obvious. From another aspect, pollution is made by all nations, so to deal with it needs all nation s’ involvement.(2011.5.14)Individual greed and selfishness has been the basis of the modern society. Some people think that we must return to the older and more traditional values of respect for the family and the local community in order to create a better world to live in. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (个性)倾向+修正Body 1: the drawbacks of greed and selfishness.Body2: what should we do to deal with the drawbacks.Body 3: going back to old traditional values may not be the only and enough way.驳斥+立论Body 1: the society always develops to a higher level and traditional values may not be accepted by modern people.Body 2: there are some negative sides of greed and selfishness, but in the past there also were such dark sides of our society. To solve these problems, the establishment of new values and dependence on laws as well as regulations will be of more significance.Body3: greed and selfishness mainly come along with the emphasis on individual rights and freedom. But traditional values focus on the conformity to set rules without any defiance even individual rights are infringed upon. Hence, the fault does not lies in the advocate of individualism or the loss of traditional values, but in whether people can strike a balance between individual needs and communal benefits.(2011.5.19)The government should control the amount of violence in films and on television in order to decrease the violent crimes in society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this issue? (暴力控制)Nowadays, it is claimed that the increasing crime rate can be attributed to the violence in films and on television. Thus there appears a proposal that government should control media contents. I think this proposal is not well-grounded.The proliferation of violence and pornographic contents in films and on television leads to some damages, especially for youngsters. That’s because films and television are the main channel of information and entertainment for young people who are, to some degree, lacking in the ability to judge right and wrong. Thus they may imitate those so-called heroes or are easily influenced by those gangsters without the realization that they are committing crimes. It seems justifiable for the government to find some countermeasures against this phenomenon. So some people hold that the violence on television and in films should be controlled. This may be effective because youngsters may be immune from those violence contents and decrease their risk of being affected dangerously. But can this measure really remove young people’s crimes completely? The proportion of youngsters who copy crimes of the film content just accounts for a tiny part. Actually the increase of crimes is largely attributed to some causes such as the widening income gap, the lack of law awareness and increasing unemployment rate. Thus, to deal with the crime phenomenon, the government should make more efforts in terms of law enforcement, offering sounder security system and more job opportunities instead of strengthening censorship. Conclusion: It is undoubted that excessive violence contents in films and on television are harmful for the society especially for youngsters. But government’s control over violence in media may not be so effective as expected in dealing with decreasing crime rate.(2011.6.4)We can get knowledge from news, but some people think we can't trust the journalist. What do you think? What qualities should a journalist have? (公众新闻)Today news media is confronted with some resentment/complaints that it sometimes broadcasts false news or even distorted information. This phenomenon does exist in many areas but the significance of news media should not be denied completely. (Today, complaints about the negative sides of news media are often heard. ) The status of journalists has been eroded as the result of the frequent rise of false news or even some information which suffocates the truth. However, that’s incomplete part of the picture. /However, the essential role of journalists should never be downplayed completely. / However, it does not necessarily mean that journalists are not trustworthy.1. why some people hold that we cannot trust journalist.2. what should we do. We should get information from different sources.3. what qualities should they have. Objectivity and disinterestedness. Conscientious. Responsibility.(2011.6.11)Some people think that government should only spend money on the construction of public services rather than waste on the arts such as music and painting. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (财政)Introduction:In present society, arts such as music and painting have become modern people’s topic of daily life. However, some people think government’s investment should not cover arts but just public services. This view, I think, isBody 1: there is a deeply-rooted bias against music and painting. It is claimed that, unlike public construction, they are abstract and cannot bring immediate benefits to people. Of course, art cannot provide benefits right at once, but it can cultivate people’s minds and values in the long run. It contributes to people’s spiritual needs just as public construction does to people’s material needs.Body 2: Also music and painting, as abstract art forms, are regarded as pleasure belonging to just a minority of people. Most of us think they have nothing to do with our life. In effect, this is a misunderstanding. In most developed countries, millions of people visit museums to admire art objects or enjoy orchestra or symphony. Undoubtedly, arts have become an integral part of our life.Body 3: It is found that music and painting, contrary to common belief, are beneficial for citizens and help to improve our welfare. Hence, they belong to one of the public services, which necessitates government’s investments. What’s more, with the development of society and economy, the expenditure on arts will increase due to the rise of people’s spiritual need.In conclusion, government should invest in the construction of public services, which has been widely accepted. Music and painting nowadays can be classified into public welfare; therefore, they should also be invested in by the government.参考题:Some movies increase the amount of bad driving. What can be done to encourage young people to drive more safely?考官9分范文Movies tend to have very large influence on young people who are influenced both by what they see and hear. Because this is the case, it is true that car chases in action movies tend to lead to an increase in the number of car accidents among young drivers because they try to copy what they have seen in the films. They drive too fast and take unnecessary risks and the difficulty is that most young people lack the skills and experience to do this. There are a variety of ways in which young people can be encouraged to practice safer driving habits. Firstly, the government should launch a safe driving campaign to convey the fact that driving safely is not uncool. In effect, it should be cool to stay alive and healthy. Secondly, every movie should make it clear that dangerous car chases are undertaken only in strict safety conditions with experienced drivers, and often special movie-making tricks are used to enhance the action. Thirdly, young people should be forced to take safe driving courses every year for the first five years that they have their driver’s license. In this way, they are forced to perfect their driving skills or their license will be taken away. Finally, as part of this course, young drivers should go to hospitals and witness the effects of poor or dangerous driving on other people. When they see hospitalized people whose lives have been destroyed due to stupid risk-taking, they will surely change their minds about whether it is cool to copy action heroes and drive fast. (2011.6.23) In many countries traditional foods are being replaced by international fast foods. This has negative effects on both families and societies. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (传统食品)Today, people are confronted with quickening life tempo and heavier work pressure. The need for higher efficiency makes them eager for fast food. And thus traditional food is losing popularity. This may have some serious consequences.Traditionally, people enjoyed dinners together and this was a good opportunity for them to communicate with each others. Definitely, this is helpful for consolidating the interpersonal relationship among family members. But the rise of fast foods has largely changed the situation and the cozy picture of family unification disappeared. People go to restaurant or snack shops to have their dinner. Family is no longer the place for them to get together. On the other hand, mean that there is no advantage of international foods.Body 1: It is claimed that today’s family bonds are not as close as before because people rarely get the opportunity to sit together enjoying foods. I hold a conservative attitude toward this view. The loosening relationship is mainly attributed to the heavier pressure of survival, quickening living tempo and fiercer competition, which are the basic characteristics of modern age. Fast food should not be the scapegoat.Body 2: Also, some complaints about fast food may be concerned with its damage to cuisine culture (society). Fast food just satisfies people’s stomach, but not their taste and appetite. In china, the past several decades have witnessed the prosperity and popularity of fast foods. However, Chinese traditional cuisine culture has also been perfectly kept and fully developed. It proves that fast food and traditional food are not exclusive.Body 3: it accompanies the accelerating living tempo and globalization of economy. It improves efficiency, and introduces new food production methods. Of course, it has changed to some degree people’s food style and nutrition structure. But it is hard to judge whether this change is negative or not. Maybe time will give us a more objective answer.(2011.6.25)We are surrounded by all kinds of advertising, which significantly influence our lives. Do the positive effects of advertising outweigh its negative effects? (广告)(将论证与开头合并)Every year there arise some outstanding advertisements which promote the products and also inspire our creativity as well. For most people, advertisements are far more than a repetitive cajoling which coaxes customers to buy more. Those creative advertisements themselves reflect the wisdom and intelligence in modern commerce. Actually, nobody can deny that advertisements serve as an entertainment industry which captures more attention from the audience.Various advertisements serve different purposes and the function goes beyond entertaining people. In reality, advertising boasts some practical significance. For instance, people can get the updated information about the latest products without making any efforts. Modern people are living under great working pressure and pace, so it is hardly feasible for them to know various products voluntarily. Advertisements provide them with an alternative which is more convenient and efficient. When it comes to the positive effects of advertisements, one thing should never be neglected. It is well known that not all advertisements serve the practical and commercial purposes. Advertisement for public awareness and welfare should be pinned out. Its role in promoting social values and advocating good social order has been widely recognized. However, all these afore-mentioned merits cannot eclipse the dark sides of modern advertising. Surely, nothing is intact and advertising is no exception. At present, the main problem of advertising industry lies in the fact that there are too much misleading and exaggerated information in promotion. And impulse buying is a commonly seen phenomenon in supermarket, which is regarded as the consequence of excessive advertising.(2011.7.9)There are many extinct species in the world nowadays. Some people say we should protect these animals from dying out, while others say we should concentrate more on problems of human beings. Discuss both opinions and give your personal view. (动物)Today, many animals are struggling on the brink of extinction, which has captured widespread concern. However, some people still cling to the idea that animal protection is none of our business. I firmly object to this opinion.B1:动物是生态平衡的重要环节,因此要保护生态,就必须要保护动物。
