部编版2020高考英语一轮选训习题Unit3Inventorsandinventions(含解析)新人教版选修8

选修8 Unit 3 Inventors and inventions李仕才Ⅰ.阅读理解Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only ” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a computer, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.I don’t only avoid those“if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you”. When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be there. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality(可能发生的事). And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.1.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule ?A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.2.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to __________.A. keep her appointment with the eye doctorB. meet her father who was already an old manC. join in the holiday celebration of the companyD. finish her work before the deadline approaching3.The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closed in meaning to “_________”.A. abandonedB. lackedC. avoidedD. wasted4.What is the best title for the passage ?A. The Emotional Well-beingB. The Two Saddest WordsC. The Most Useful RuleD. The Peace of Mind【文章大意】这篇文章主要讲解的是作者对于最悲哀的两个单词if only 的理解及看法。

But as Lilo grew up, he didn’t like being brushed. One day, as the little girl approached him, Lilo hit her with his large paw. The girl’s arm was badly injured. It’s rare for a family pet to attack its loving owner. But Lilo should never have been anyone’s pet. This cute and playful “cat” was actually a tiger, one of at least 15,000 tigers, lions, and other big cats now kept as pets in American homes and backyard zoos.“People love these animals and they love the idea of owning something wild and strange,” says Nicole Paquette of the Animal Protection Institute. “They have no idea how hard it is to take care of them. Tigers like Lilo can grow to weigh 650 pounds. They eat 15 pounds of raw meat per day. Their powerful paws can destroy a human skull. Dozens of people each year are injured or killed by pet tigers and other big cats.”The situation can also be deadly for the big cats themselves. Fully grown cats often end up confined to small cages that are never cleaned because their owners are afraid to get too close. Living in squalid conditions, the cats become sickly and often more aggressive. Many animals die from neglect.Shirley Minshew works for the International Fund for Animal Welfare, an organization that rescues abandoned big cats. She helps place some fortunate cats in sanctuaries, private shelters that keep the cats well fed and safe. But as Minshew says, “Most of these sanctuaries are already full. So are big city zoos. The only solution is for people to stop buying these animals.”“Wild animals are exactly that-wild.” says Minshew. “Although they can be kept in cages, they are not tamable(可[服的). They will never be like a dog or a cat. They are wild-and they should be allowed to stay that way.”24. Why did the author mention Lilo in the first two paragraphs?A. To entertain readers.B. To tell a terrifying story.C. To show wild animals are unsuitable pets.D. To excite people’s interest in keeping animals.25. What can we infer from Paquette’s words?A. Tigers are illegal to own.B. Taking care of tigers is excitingC. Pet tigers are cute but grow quickly.D. Keeping big cats as pets is dangerous.26. What does the underlined word “squalid” in Paragraph 4 mean?A. ScaryB. DirtyC. NormalD. Comfortable27. Which of the following may Minshew agree with?A. Keep rescuing tigers in the wild.B. It is beneficial to pet baby tigers.C. Stop taking wildlife out of the wild.D. Sanctuaries are the best places for wild animals.CShould our planet become unable to sustain human life, our species’ only hope would be to leave and settle on another planet. To ensure it a success, we first have to learn how to reproduce in space. The Netherlands-based project Spacelife Origin wants to get the ball rolling by sending a pregnant woman into space to give birth to a baby.According to Egbert Edelbroek, one of the CEOS of the Dutch project, learning how to give birth in space is an insurance policy for the human race. Even if we ever discover or build an inhabitable(可居住的)place away from Earth, we must first uncover the secrets of space birth if we stand any chance of survival. He claims that he has already met with several spaceflight companies willing to transport the team 250 miles above the ground, some wealthy people willing to finance the experiment, and some women willing to become the first to give birth in space. However, even if Spacelife Origin manages to find a volunteer, a commercial rocket and the money necessary to fund the whole thing. the mission is still bound to meet some problems. Getting the pregnant woman into space just before she’s ready to deliver the baby sounds di fficult enough, but it’s the safety of the baby and the childbirth itself that experts are worried about. Astronauts usually experience three times the force of gravity during a rocket’s rise to orbit, and no one knows how that will affect the baby or the mother. Assuming that everything goes right, there’s still a problem of how to get back to Earth. These days, that means surviving a bone-rattling(震动骨头的)free fall through the atmosphere, followed by a parachute landing in some desert, not exactly the kind of experience a newborn and its mother should go through.Spacelife Origin acknowledges that its plan still has unknowns, but that’s the main reas on for this pioneering mission, to find answers.28. The purpose of the Netherlands-based project Spacelife Origin is _______.A. to start a ball gameB. to send a pregnant woman into spaceC. to help humans to find another planetD. to research how humans to give birth in space29. What is the attitude of Egbert Edelbroek towards the project?A. Worried.B. Enthusiastic.C. Doubtful.D. Indifferent.30. What can we learn from the text?A. The pregnant woman will land on Earth safely.B. Some rich men assisted the project mentioned.C. Scientists are finding ways to help humans multiply in space.D. Humans have discovered an inhabitable place away from Earth.31. The best title of the text can be _______.A. The Possibility of Giving Birth in SpaceB. The Secret of Giving Birth in SpaceC. The Project of Giving Birth in SpaceD. The Difficulties of Giving Birth in SpaceDIt’s a cold autumn afte r noon but inside a little Brooklyn bakery, it’s hot. School has just let out and the store is filled with kids eyeing baked goodies.La Gran Via Bakery is an institution in this neighborhood. It’s been around since 1978-three generations of chefs making cakes and cupcakes. That is why, when co-owner Betsy Leyva was recently offered the chance of creating a hamburger restaurant on the side, she hesitated.“I was like, are you crazy? What do you mean?” she says. Uber, the ride-sharing company, was suggesting she create a “virtual restaurant” — one that only exists online, and delivers through Uber Eats. There are now about 800 such virtual restaurants in the US, often created when enough customers look through the Uber Eats app for a certain type of food in their area that they can’t find. “When we see people searching for something but not finding it, that signals to us that there’s an opportunity” says Elyse Propis, who leads Uber Eats’ virtual restaurant initiative(行动)across North America. So the company approaches a restaurant and suggests creating a virtual side restaurant, with those dishes people are wanting but can’t get.Uber says doing this helps restaurants grow their business and cater better to customers. But there are mixed feelings in the industry about whether these virtual restaurants are a good thing. Leyva, has nothing but praise for Uber Eats. In the end it was her brother, the bakery’s co-owner, who persuaded her to give it a try. And that’s how t he online restaurant Brooklyn Burger House was born.Leyva says that during Brooklyn Burger’s opening week, she thought she’d go crazy. The demand was so high she was constantly running out of ingredients. It hasn’t died down-she had to hire additional staff. Not everyone sees Uber Eats and the virtual restaurant as a natural solution.“Restaurant profits can be as skinny as the thin crusts(面包皮). And Uber Eats is taking a big part of the earnings,” says Jay Jerrier, owner of the Cane Rosso wood-fired piz zerias in Texas. “They charge us between 30 and 35 percent of whatever the bill is.”32. What do we know about La Gran Via Bakery?A. It opened recently.B. It lies in a high school.C. It is a virtual restaurant.D. It is popular in the neighborhood.33. Uber will create a virtual restaurant when _______.A. it finds unmet demandB. Uber Eats fails to workC. a type of food comes into fashionD. enough people go to a real restaurant34. How is the business of Brooklyn Burger?A. It is worrying.B. It is very good.C. It is too demanding.D. It grew slowly at first.35. B(2019·武汉调研)When I graduated from the University of Iowa last year, I did something my friends did not understand. I left Iowa, where I had friends and stability, to live on a small houseboat near San Francisco. At school, I had found a job driving a school bus so people asked, “Why on earth are you leaving?”Well, at graduation I was presented with two things — a degree in psychology and a question. It was the same one that many in my generation got:“What do I do now?” It was as difficult as it was common. That's because many people at my age were raised with the same words, repeated over and over by parents, teachers and TV, that “you can be whatever you want to be”. As a young boy, every time when I was puzzled about my future, they would say that they would be happy if I was happy. However, what I needed was concrete advice but not a vague idea, for example, “be a doctor, or be a bus driver”.My experience was by no means universal. Many Americans are taught by their parents that the only purpose in life is to attain money and power. As a goal, this seems much easier and clearer than finding “happiness” or “gentleness”. The result of this upbringing is that many of my classmates did not specialize in any particular skill, rather assuming that something would magically happen to overcome their problems. They often get a real shock when they enter the “real world” and find that their options are very limited. Many of my friends have taken jobs as waiters or cooks after graduating, or have moved back in with their parents. My life on the boat is hard at times, especially during storms. But this is my small attempt to be happy on my own. I'm not buying into my nation's idea of limitlesspossibilities because I feel that stops the growth of many of today's youth.语篇解读:本文是文化教育类夹叙夹议文。
