Some have a higher level of confidence than others do, but even those whose confidence is lacking can learn to build their level of confidence and reach their most important goals. Increasing self-confidence is one of the most common reasons people give for seeking the help of psychologists and other professionals. One of the many places where a greater level of confidence is useful is in the workplace. We all know how difficult it can be, for instance, to ask the boss for a raise. This process can be extremely difficult for those who lack confidence in their own abilities. After all, if you are unsure about your own abilities, how will you ever convince your boss that you deserve more money for the work you do?Even if you are not asking for that big raise, having plenty of confidence in your abilities is important to success. If you are certain of your abilities, chances are that those around you, whether they are your coworkers, your colleagues or your superiors(上级), will see that confidence, and that will help to assure them that you are the best at what you do.Being thought of as the person to go to, and being seen as an expert in your chosen field, is naturally very important to success on the job. If you can make yourself the person people go to for guidance and advice, you will help to protect yourself from the ever present danger of downsizing. After all, if you are a recognized expert at the office, you will be regarded as an indispensable member of the team.Having a high level of confidence, after all, does not mean overlooking the places where you could improve. Knowing what you do well and where you need help will help you enjoy increased success and confidence. 25.What is the passage mainly about?A.The influence of confidence on one‘s life.B.The importance of confidence to success.C.The difference of people‘s confidence.D.The judgment on one‘s confidence.26.Psychologists and other professionals can offer help to those _____.A.who think their goals are hard to reachB.who expect to give guidance to othersC.who want to ask the boss for a raiseD.who dream to be recognized experts27.What does the underlined word indispensable in Paragraph 5 probably mean? She won a gold medal at last. The decision to start training again wasn't easy. "I s truggled with that a lot," she told a newspaper. ―At the beginning I felt selfish,I felt like, ‗Well, I'm not supposed to be thinking of myself anymore. It's all supposed to be for my kid.‘‖She faced physical challenges of getting back into competition shape after giving birth, as well. When she started racing in the spring of 2011, she was still breast-feeding; she would nurse her son, then race, then breast-feed again after the race. Her days revolved around Lucas and training."I feel like I'm able to do what I love to do and still manage a family and have that balance," Armstrong said. "That you have a family or a child doesn't mean that you have to stop going after what you dream of individually.‖Armstrong makes balance look easy, whether it's on her bike or as an athlete-mom. But she points out that you can't have it all without making some sacrifices. For example, don't expect a neat home—her husband, Joe Savola, who she describes as her support system and her "protector", says he's had to give up on trying to keep everything orderly at home and just accept that their living room has become Lucas's playroom. For Armstrong, she's sacrificed time with friends who had kids around the same age—there just wasn't time. Now, she says, "That sounds like fun to me." As she heads home to Boise, Idaho, she's ready to do regular mom stuff.29.After Kristin Armstrong retired, she ___. Did you oversleep on a weekday and fear you‘d get into trouble at the office? In any case, you know what it feels like to feel fear. But one woman doesn‘t The woman, code-named ―UM‖, gave her first-ever interview after years of being studied by a team of researchers. The woman is given a code name because the researchers want to protect her from anyone who would take advantage of her inability to feel afraid.UM can‘t tell you what fear is because she‘s never experienced it. ―I wonder what it‘s like to actually be afraid of something,‖ she said. The formal name for the disease is Urbach-Wieth disease, which is characterized by a hoarse(粗哑的)voice, small bumps around the eyes, and calcium deposits(钙沉积的)in the brain. In the case of UM,the disease has transformed the part of her brain that controls the human response to fear. In the interview, UM talks about an event in her life where she was held at knifepoint and gunpoint, ―I was walking to the store, and I saw a man on a park bench. He said. ―Come here, please,‖ so I went over to him. He grabbed me by the shirt, put a knife to my throat and told me he was going to cut me. I told him, ―Go ahead and cut me,‖ I wasn‘t afraid at all. And for some reason,he let me go.‖Doctors who have been studying UM‘s condition for years have been trying different things that could strike fear into her. They finally figured something out-increasing UM‘s carbon dioxide levels.Extra carbon dioxide concentration in the blood is known to cause fear and panic in health individuals. We should have arrived at Liverpool at 9:19, but due to a typical London fog, the train had to move along so slowly that it was not until 10:30 that it got there. In spite of our late arrival, Joan, my wif e‘s sister, decided that she would go to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London while we went shopping. It was only after her sister had disappeared into the fog that my wife realized that we hadn‘t decided where we should meet for lunch. Since I had our three tickets for the concert in my pocket, this was indeed a problem. There seemed t o be nothing we could do except taking a taxi to the Tower of London, and try to find her there. Needless to say, we didn‘t find her.It was now one o‘clock, and the concert began at 2:30. ―Perhaps she will think of waiting outside the concert hall,‖ suggested my wife hopefully. By this time the fog was so thick that road traffic had to stop, and the only way to get there was by underground railway. Hand in hand we felt our way along the road to where we thought the nearest station should be. An hour later we were still trying to find it. Just as I was about to lose my temper completely when we met a blind man tapping his way confidently through the fog. With his help we found Tower Hill tube station just fifty yards down the road.By now it was far too late even to try to get to the concert hall before the performance began at 2:30, so we decided to return to Cambridge. It took seven long hours instead of the usual two to make that journey. Nor were we able to get any food and drink on the train. Tired and hungry we finally reached home at ten, opening the door to the sound of the telephone bell.
