A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind: How can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong?Avoiding temptation (诱惑) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called the "out of sight, out of mind" principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight. The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily. Researchers don't believe that one's willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down. High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower-at least to a point.Willpower may also be made less vulnerable (脆弱) to being exhausted in the first place.Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength. The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year's Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don't try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you'll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won't require making decisions at all.(1)From the studies in the passage we learn that ________.A. people have unlimited self-controlB. high motivation ensures one's successC. willpower is hardly completely exhaustedD. too many temptations often lead to failure (2)The underlined phrase "tap into" in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________. A. make use of B. run out of C. build D. increase(3)The author compares self—control to muscles ________.A. to prove the long-term effect of willpowerB. to show the significance of regular exerciseC. to argue that self-control can he easily used upD. to explain the benefits of practicing self-control(4)To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer?A. "I will give up dessert and do exercise."B. "I will set three goals this new semester."C. "I will read an English novel every month."D. "I will keep myself from any temptation."【答案】(1)C(2)A(3)D(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇议论文,列举了关于意志力的几种研究和观点,作者认为有了明确的目标,良好的自我监督和练习,就可以在面对诱惑时使意志力保持坚强。

Asa matter of fact, the outstanding thing that happens to bright children is thatthey are very likely to grow into bright adults. To find thisout, 1,500 gifted persons were followed up to their thirty-fifth years with these results:On adultintelligence tests, they scored as high as they did as children. They were, asa group, in good health, physically and mentally. Eighty-four percent of theirgroup were married and seemed content with their life.About 70 percenthad graduated from colleges, though only 30 percent had graduated with honors.A few had even flunked out (退学), but nearly half of these had returned to graduate.Of the men, 80percent were in one of the professions or in business, managerial or semiprofessional jobs. The women who had remained single had offices, business,or professional occupations. The group hadpublished 90 books and 1,500 articles in scientific, scholarly, and literarymagazines and had collected more than 100 patents. In a materialway they didn’t do badly either. Average income was considerably higher amongthe gifted people, especially the men, than for the country as a whole, despitetheir comparative youth when last surveyed. In fact, farfrom being strange, maladjusted (难以适应) people locked in an ivory tower, most of the gifted were turningtheir early promises into practical reality.41. The main idea of the passage is __________.A. that giftedadults can be as intelligent as when they were youngB. that brightchildren are unlikely to be physically and mentally healthyC. that giftedchildren are most likely to become bright grown-upsD. that when thebright children grow up, they become ordinary42. From the passage, we can conclude that____________.A. most of the giftedchildren became white-collar workersB. half of thegifted followed up graduated from collegesC. each of thetalented published at least one articleD. successfulmen got higher income than successful women43. Which of the following is mentioned in the passage?A. The gifted could not be fit for their social positions.B. Most of the bright and successful women remained single.C. The gifted men got full marks on intelligence tests.D. Most of the gifted appeared satisfied with their life.44. The e_planation of the underlined part 〝turning their early promises into practical reality〞 is _____________.A. earningtheir living and keeping promisesB. doingpractical jobs and facing realityC. doing whatthey have promisedD. realizingwhat they were e_pectedBBefore a newtype of airplane goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others. The first iscalled the 〝tank test〞. A modern airplane must fly very high in the sky. Airmust be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure (结构) of theplane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air,the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure (压力) on a small window is like a hugefoot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to fail, theplane would e_plode in the sky. To test the structure of the plane, the planeis lowered into a huge tank or container of water. Then it is filled with air.The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is highup in the air. Finally, there is an e_plosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers candiscoverwhich part of the plane has broken. Then that part is made stronger. The mostdangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flights in theair. The test pilot must find out e_actly what happens when the engines (发动机) are all shut off at once. Theplane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot’s job to find out how he canget control of the plane again. These two tests are e_amples of how planes aremade safe before they ever carry passengers.45. By doing the 〝tank test〞, the engineerscan find out ___________.A. the pressureinside and outside the planeB. the strengthof the plane structureC. the amount ofair in the planeD. the power ofthe airplane engines46. What will happen to the plane under the〝tank test〞?A. It will bebroken.B. It will bemade stronger.C. It will befilled with water.D. It will betested by pilots.47. According to the te_t, why are test flights most dangerous?A. The engines may be damaged.B. The pilot may lose control of the plane.C. The plane may e_plode in the air.D. Too much air may get into the plane.48. What might be the most suitable title for the te_t?A. Two Important Tests on AirplanesB. The Danger of Testing AirplanesC. The Importance of Flying SafelyD. He believes thatphysical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learnour looks—we are not born with them. A baby has generally informed face features.A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set the eyebrows by lookingat those around-family and friends. This helps e_plain why the people of someareas of the United States look so much alike, new Englanders or Southerners have certain common face features that cannot be e_plained by genetics (遗传学). The e_act shape of the mouth is notset at birth, it is learned after. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formeduntil well after new teeth are set. For many, this can be well into grown-ups.A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look alike. We learnour looks from those around us. This is perhaps why in a single country areawhere people smile more than those in other areas. In the United States, fore_ample, the South is the part of the country where the people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York State stillless. Many southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partlybecause people on Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street inAtlanta, Georgia. People in largely populated areas also smile and greet eachother in public less than people in small towns do.57. Ray Birdwhistell believesthat physical appearance ___________.A. has little to do with cultureB. has much to do with cultureC. is ever changingD. is different from place to place58. Twenty-si_ percentof the students say that English stories are their favorite. Only seven percentof the students are most interested in reading articles about learning methods. However, the number ofstudents who enjoy reading popular sciencearticles doubles that of those who prefer readingarticles about learning methods. The old idea that …is just a myth. As a matter of fact, the outstanding thing that happens to brightchildren is that they are very likely to grow into bright adults. In fact, far from being …, most of the gifted were turning theirearly promises into practical reality. 84 percent of their group were married and seemed content with theirlife. 原文的:The metal structure (结构) of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. 原文中的Finally, there is an e_plosion. 和Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then thatpart is made stronger. Take Our Daughters to Work Day. Take Our Daughters to Work Day. Cara’s father is a filmdirector.。
