Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Mr. Richards was quite good at shooting with a rifle (来福枪), and he had taken part in several competitions in his small town. He had never actually won a prize, but each time he had done well and once he had come in fourth. Then he had to go to a big city on business for a month, and as he had nothing much to do in the evenings, he joined the local rifle club, and spent several pleasant evenings shooting there. The rifle club had a very good fi rst team, which used to take part in a lot of important shooting competitions. One of these took place while Mr. Richards was with the m, and of course he went to see it. But one of the members of the club’s team suddenly fell ill just before the match, and the captain had to choose somebody else to take his place in a hurry. He had heard that Mr. Richards had taken part in severalcompetitions already, and he had seen for himself at the club that, although he was not up to the standard of the club’s first team, he was quite a good shot. He therefore invited him to take the sick man’s place.Mr. Richards felt greatly honored to be asked to shoot for such a good team, but he also felt very nervous, because he was afraid of making a fool of himself and letting down his team.In fact, he was so nervous that he could not keep his hand from trembling while he was shooting, with the result that he did very badly in the competition. When he took his score card to his captain, he said , “After seeing my score , I feel like going outside and shooting myself. ”The captain looked at the card for a few minutes and then said, “Well, you had better take two bullets with you if you do that.”56. How did it happen that Mr. Richards took part in the competition for the club’s first team?A. He was a member of the club’s first team.B. He was a first-rate shot in competitions.C. He wanted to take the s ick man’s place.D. He took part in the competition at the invitation of the captain.57. How did Mr. Richards feel after the competition?A. He felt uncomfortable.B. He joined the local club to compete with other members.B. He was a man who had a strong sense of self-respect.C. He always came in first in all the competitions he took part in.D. He was full of confidence before the competition.59. What does the last sentence “You had better take two bullets with you if you do that.” mean?A. You are such a bad shot that you might miss the target while trying to kill yourself.D. There are two bullets left in your rifle. You had better use them up.(B)Psychologists have found that only about two percent of adults use their creativity, compared with ten percent of seven-year-old children. When five-year-olds were tested, the results soared to ninety percent! Curiosity and inventiveness are daily occurrences for the small child, but somehow most of us lose the freedom and flexibility (灵活性) of the child as we grow older. The need to “follow directions” and “do-it-right,” plus the many societal constraints we put on ourselves, prevent us from using our creative potential. It is never too late to tap our creative potential. Some of us, however, find it difficult to think in imaginative and flexible ways because of our set pattern of approaching problems. When we are inflexible in our approach to situations, we close our minds to creative possibilities.Being creat ive doesn’t necessarily mean being a genius. It means looking at situations in a new way or putting something together in a new form that makes sense. Spontaneity(自发性) is one of the key elements of creativity. If you were to ask someone, “What's half of eight?” and received the answer, “Zero,” you might laugh and say, “That's wrong!” But the figure 8 can be visualized as two zeros, one on top of the other; it can also be seen as two 3's standing face to face. The ability to visualize our environment in new ways opens our perspective and allows us to make all kinds of discoveries. If each of us asked the question “Why?” more often and investigated “other” alternatives to problem solving, our lives would be more interesting and exciting.60. According to the essay, ___________________.A. we tend to be more creative as we grow oldB. adults do not use their creativity so often as children doC. we don't lose our creativity as we grow oldD. people are born with different creative potentials61. Being creative means being ________________A. able to approach problems in new waysB. able to solve problemsC. inclined to ask whyD. a genius62. We are less creative than we can be because _______________A. we often think it too late to tap our creative potentialsB. set patterns of doing things close our minds to new possibilitiesC. creativity is not encouraged by societyD. education kills creativity(C)Was your school noisy or peaceful? It might not seem important, but a growing body of research suggests that sounds can have an impact on learning, performance and creativity.Whether background sounds are beneficial or not seems to depend on what kind of noise it is —and the volume. In a series of studies published last year, Ravi Mehta from the College of Business at Illinois and his colleagues tested people's creativity while exposed to a soundtrack made up of background noises — such as cof fee-shop chatter and construction-site drilling —at different volumes. They found that people were more creative when the background noises were played at a medium level than when volume was low. Loud background noise, however, damaged their creativity. This makes sense for a couple of reasons, says psychologist Dr Nick Perham, at Cardiff Metropolitan University in the UK, who studies the effect of sounds on learning but was not involved in the study. Firstly, he says, sounds that are most disturbing tend to be very variable. A general hum (嗡嗡声) in the background suggests a steady-state sound with not much variation. "So there's not much there to capture your attention — nothing disturbing the subjects," he says. At the same time, the background noise might cause the subjects to be in a slightly heightened state of arousal(觉醒), says Perham. "Medium arousal is best for good performance. So it mightbe that a general hum in the background gives an ideal level of arousal." With that in mind, Perham suggests there may be some benefits to playing music or other sounds in an art class or other situations where creativity is key. Many teachers all over the world already play music to students in class. Many are inspired by the belief that hearing music can improve IQ in tasks, the so-called Mozart effect. While the evidence actually suggests it's a stretch to say classical music improves brainpower, researchers do think pleasant sounds before a task can sometimes lift your mood and help you perform well, says Perham, who has done his own studies on the phenomenon. The key appears to be that y ou enjoy what you’re hearing. "If you like the music or you like the sound —even listening to a Stephen King novel —then you did better. It didn’t matter about the music," he says.63. Which of the following is true according to the studies by Ravi Mehta and Nick Perham?A. It’s better not to expose people to any background noise while at work.B. Construction-site drilling should be forbidden where there is a school.C. Noises will harm people’s health however low their volumes are.D. A certain level of noise may d o good to people’s creativity.64. According to Dr Nick Perham, it can be inferred that in an art class teachers had better ______.A. keep the classroom quietB. play music at a steady and medium volumeC. broadcast classical musicD. vary the volume of the music constantly65. In the last paragraph. the underlined part “it’s a stretch" is used to______.A. prove the usefulness of pleasing soundsB. confirm the belief of Mozart effectC. challenge the importance of soft musicD. cast doubt on the power of music in raising IQ66. Which of the following might be the best title for this passage?A. Learning Power: Noise and Music WorkB. Noise Meeting Music: A Blessing?C. Noise or Music: Creativity in DangerD. Brainpower: More Music and Less NoiseSection C (4×2=8分)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.Over the last 10 years, the number of university students seeking help for mental or emotional problems has grown sharply. _____67___ Nearly half of all stud ents who sought help in recent years said they felt anxious. ____68____ An additional 40 p ercent of students said they felt depressed—very, very sad.____69____ One reason could simply be a change in American culture. In the United States, people are increasingly comfortable talking about mental health issues and bringing their problems to trained experts. Another reason could be related to the current generation of young people attending university today. But one reason is surely higher education itself.____70____ But college is a difficult time when students want to make friends, find their identity and succeed academically. “College being a place with high demands, lots of competition and lots of concern about being able to get a good job after college, certainly increases the level of stres s that students experience.”IV. Summary Writing (10分)Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Now another American education icon may be disappearing: the hardbound (精装的) textbook. More and more school districts are replacing traditional textbooks with electronic ones. Electronic textbooks are usually accessed either through an online server or are downloaded to student laptops. In North Texas, Plano and Irving schools are introducing e-books into a few classrooms, and Lancaster school officials also are considering them. But no local district appears to be going as far as Forney. The district most likely would be the first in the state to use e-books in every classroom for grades five to twelve.Officials point out several reasons for turning to e-books. For one, they are easier to update. Thus the publishers are able to find ways to do online textbooks and they can go back and change information. Using e-books will better prepare students for college and the workplace.Rapid district growth is another reason. The number of the students in the district is expected to double within five years. It’s difficult to know textbook needs in advance and some students wait months for their books. But e-books can be uploaded onto a “blank” laptop in a few hours.Cost may eventually be a deciding cause for choosing e-books, but there are no big savings yet. Even if they get it electronically, they still have to pay for the b ook because they’re buying the instructional material. That may change as more and more districts move toward e-books.Today’ students have little trouble adjusting to laptops and e-books, said Connie Cooley, who has taught at the Academy of Irving ISD for five years. But she said it could worry teachers.“It’s harder for people who are right around my age and older.” said Ms. Cooley,36. “I’m laptop-savvy, so I was ready for it, but those that aren’t are a little worrying.
